Prologue

Rain came down in violent turrets, the ship rocked dangerously forward. The bow suddenly plunged forward, everything not tied down rolled across the deck.
A crew member opened the door to a cabin and said urgently, "tie the crib down!". But it was to late, the crib, Ezera in it, slid out the door. Ezera's mum cried out, "No, Ezera!". It was to late, the crib tipped over the edge, Ezera screaming in terror. Suddenly, icy waves crashed over the crib, engulfing it. Down, down it sank, then suddenly there was no more water. Ezera looked up weakly to see a scarlet dragon carrying her crib, higher and higher they rose until she could no longer see the sea. The journey was long and, to Ezera, seemed to take hours. Finaly, she could see a hazy line in the distance, land! The dragon set the crib down in an immense forest. Gradually other dragons seeped out of the shadows, looking curiously at the new arrival. In the crib lay a beautiful baby girl. Hazel hair traveled down her neck and her eyes sparkled a dazzling silver. Which were filled with gentle light. Instead of fear, curiosity took hold of her as she looked at the huge beasts looming over her. As she looked at the dragons she saw not the savage, bloodthirsty monsters her people took them for, all she saw was an intelligent, harmless animal. She gave a small smile and giggled a little, her smile was innocent and sweet, full of trust. The scarlet dragon that carried her took her up in her claws and flew to her cave. The huge dragon held out one claw and the infant grasped it with her chubby fingers. She gave a small giggle and turned her head to the corner of the cave and saw three dragon hatchlings snuggled together. The dragon picked up the infant in her claws and moved her to the corner against the other hatchlings. There she nestled in front of them, shielding them with her wings. Already, Ezera thought of her as mum and the others as her siblings. The child's vision blacked out as she fell asleep, laying against a dragon.
