Chapter 2
Many days past very much the same, Ezera and the hatchlings grew with every day. One day their mother said, over a mouth full of food, "it's time you learn to fly." The hatchlings looked eagerly up, and Ezera tilted her head. When the meal was done, The scarlet dragon led the hatchlings to the cave mouth. She looked back, launching herself off the ledge, soaring on the light breeze. She looped around, coming to rest back upon the ledge. Ezera's eldest brother took a tentative step forward, spreading is wings. He jumped, flapping his wings frantically at first, trying to come to terms with the new environment. Soon he steadied himself, gliding across the wind. Her other siblings followed his lead, pushing off and gliding.
Her mother looked to her, knowing she hadn't any wings. She walked over to Ezera, taking her up in her claws. The Dragon proceeded to hoist the child onto her back. Pushing off, the large dragon followed her hatchlings. They flew a while like this, lazily floating through the clouds.
Suddenly, a loud noise shattered the silence. They could hear great booms and roars and shouts from the distance. The mother dragon's head shot up, she quickly flew to her hatchlings. Rounding them up with her tail, the scarlet dragon placed her hatchlings upon her back. She flew swiftly, staying low out of sight. She raced across the mountains, like a shadow across the sun. Quickly she darts into the cave, setting down her little ones in a channel that hid them from outside view. That night went quickly, they hurriedly ate upon a roasted cow from the previous day. By nightfall the mother dragon curled about her younglings, alert to noises from outside. Ezera was puzzled as to what the noises had been, and why her mother had ushered them so quickly to the cave. She drifted to sleep, questions raking her brain.
