Chapter 13: You Are Forsaken

Aerlinniel POV

I have been running for a while now, hopefully I will reach the mountain soon. As I run and almost trip, there is a loud noise and I feel a strong wind. Then I hear a voice speak,

"I am fire. I am...DEATH!"

I freeze. That...was...a...Dragon.

I don't know what to do as I start to panic. I cannot move and I just seem frozen in time. Memories flood into my mind. The screams, the heat, yelling out for my family as I ran and fell multiple times. I feel like I am about to pass out when I hear a familiar heartbeat.

Bilbo. I smile.

Finally, I start to function again and I slowly start to move closer to where I hear Bilbo.

"Bilbo!" I shout his name.

"Aerlinniel?" He says in disbelief. "Mallory and Imryll told me you had been kidnapped. I wasn't sure when I was going to see you again."

Dropping to my knees, I hug him. He wraps his small arms around me.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you." I tell him as I pull back and smile at him.

"We have a huge problem. Smaug is flying towards Laketown. We have to do something." He says and my smile fades.

"Bilbo, I am afraid there is nothing we can do."

Tauriel POV

As I watch the sky, with my Elf-hearing I can hear Smaug approaching and roaring. Suddenly, a huge shadow swoops overhead. Smaug has arrived.

I enter the house and prepares the Dwarves and the man's family to leave.

"We have no time. We must leave!" I tell them.

"Get him up."

"Come on, brother."

"Come on, come on! Let's go."

"I'm fine, I can walk." Kili says to them.

"As fast as you can."

"We're not leaving. Not without our father." The young boy says.

"If you stay here, your sisters will die. Is that what your father would want?" I question.

We the go outside and we all get on a boat.

"Give me your hand."

"Come on, we gotta go!"

"Quickly now! Hurry!" I rush them as I hear people all around me shout.

"Kili, come on!"

We set off down the canal, rowing the boat through the floating chunks of ice. Smaug swoops low overhead, and the townspeople scream.

Smaug soars high above and away from the town, then turns and dives steeply toward the town. As he gets over the town, he unleashes his flames.

"Look out!" One of the Dwarves say as a boat collides with ours.

We manage to push the boats apart, but some of the treasure from the other boat falls into the water.

"Move it! Move it! Come on, faster!"

"My gold, my GOLD!"

I hide our boat under an overhang until it's safe to go on.

"Da." The boy says and I look up to see his father at the top of the tower.

"DA!" The youngest girl screams.

As I watch, he shoots yet another arrow, harmlessly hitting the dragon.

"He hit it! He hit the dragon!" Kili exclaims.

"No..." I say to him.

"He did! He hit his mark, I saw!"

"His arrows cannot pierce its hide; I fear nothing will." I tell him.

As our boat passes under a hanging hook, the boy leaps up and grabs it, swinging clear of the boat. The other grab at him and miss, and they yell after him.

"What are you doing?!"

"Come back! Bain, come back!"

Bain uses the hook and the crane it is attached to to swing to the dock.

"Leave him! We cannot go back!" I say to them.

"Bain!"

Bard POV

Reaching for another arrow, I find only one left. I hesitate, then grab it and shoots Smaug. This time, Smaug passes so close to the tower that the wind knocks me over. Suddenly, Bain appears at the top of the bell tower.

"Dad!"

"Bain?! What are you doing?! Why didn't you leave?! You were supposed to leave!" I say, shocked.

"I came to help you." He tells me.

"No! Nothing can stop him now!"

"This might." He says and holds up the Black Arrow. I gratefully look at it, then stroke Bain's face.

"Bain - you go back. You get out of here now!"

"DAD!" He shouts.

Smaug smashes through the top part of the bell tower.

"BAIN!"

He is hanging by one arm to the remains of the tower. I grab Bain's arm and pull him back up.

Smaug lands by where the Master's boat is.

"Stop! Stop! Halt! Halt!" I hear the Master say.

I grab the Black Arrow out of Bain's hands and stand up, facing Smaug.

"Who are you that would stand against me?!" Smaug questions me.

I grab my bow, only to find that it is broken in half.

"Now that is a pity. What will you do now, Bowman? You are forsaken. No help will come."

I look around frantically, but there is nothing to help me. Smaug begins walking toward me, crushing the buildings beneath him.

"Now's our chance! Go! Go! Into the open water!" The Master yells.

"Is that your child? You cannot save him from the fire. He will BURN!" Smaug says to me.

As Smaug continues to approach, I fix the two broken halves of my bow into the walls of the belltower, with the bowstring taut between them. Then I set the Black Arrow to the bowstring, and lays the front end of the Black Arrow on Bain's shoulder.

"Stay still, son. Stay still."

Smaug continues talking, "Tell me, wretch - How now shall you challenge me?!"

I notice a missing scale on Smaug's chest and give a small smile.

"You have nothing left, but your DEATH!" Smaug howls, approaching more rapidly.

Bain looks over his shoulder at the dragon.

"Bain! Look at me. You look at me." I tell him. "A little to your left."

Bain shifts a little to his left, moving the tip of the arrow to the right, toward the spot where I noticed the missing scale on Smaug.

"That's it."

I release the Black Arrow and it flies off at high speed from Bain's shoulder. It soars through the air and into Smaug's chest through the spot without a scale.

As Smaug leaps forward in pain and fear, I grab Bain, just as Smaug careens into the tower. We fall with the tower into the water as Smaug rolls and slides through the town, destroying everything in the town.

He struggles to fly into the sky. With massive effort, he manages to flap a few hundred feet up, screaming and wheezing in pain, then gasps for breath.

He then falls back down upon the city, dead, with the end of the arrow sticking out of his heart. He lands directly upon the Master's boat, crushing it.
