6. Graveyard Soirée
"No....eww....not this one...no that one...."
Why is it that everytime you actually want to look nice, your closet says "nope". Another pair of jeans get tossed in the pile forming on top of my bed. "Naomi, what are you doing with all of your clothes?" My mother steps into the room, eying the pile on the bed. She was wearing her baking apron, whiched explained the sweet smell coming from downstairs. "I have nothing to wear tonight." I sigh.
"Honey." She chuckles. "Thought you were going to the movies?"
"I am."
" Exactly, no one will see what you're wearing once you're in the dark."
"Ha ha" I walk over to the pile of clothes, with the hopes of discovering something eligible. "I still want to look nice." I mumble. She joins me on the bed and starts sorting out items. "Thought Lydia was the one with the boyfriend, who are you getting dressed up for?"
"Mama I told you Valentino and I are only friends." She holds up a pair of ripped jeans. I disapprove by shaking my head. "Friends huh...? But out of the blue he asks you to the movies."
"I asked him." Or so I think? I'm not really sure who asked who anymore.
"How about a sundress then? That will look cute on you."
"One problem Mama, the sun went down an hour ago." She rises to her feet and moves towards my closet. "I know, I know. What if you wore this over it?" She pulls out my dark leather jacket. "Wouldn't that be fashionable?"
It was love at first sight, how my mother thought of it and not me, I will try to get over.
I'm dressed up and ready to go. Mama Is seen pulling out another tray of cookies from the oven as I pass the kitchen on the way to the door. Reluctantly I choose boots over sneakers, but hey, It was better to look good than to feel good, right? Final touches of lipstick and I was ready to go.
"Honey, give these to Valentino will you." I sigh when she passes me the bag of cookies. "Seriously?"
"Yes and tell him to save some for his little brother." I shake my head stepping out onto the front lawn. The night was young, the tingling sensation in my fingertips tells me I'm excited.
"My mother told me to give you these, but save some for your brother." Valentino smirks, being handed the bag of cookies. I climb into the passenger seat. I swear, my nose will never get used to the sharp aroma of cheese lingering inside the truck.
"What?" He chuckles, noticing my subtle sniffles. "Nothing, I'm just trying to figure out where you're hiding the parmesan."
"Parmesan?" He said dully. You're so funny."
There is a moment before Valentino turns the key and starts the car, a moment where he glances over to me not saying a word. "What?" I feel awkward having his full attention. "You look nice." He said, the engine vibrating our seats as he turns the key. I wait for the rattling noise to diminish. "You too." I wasn't saying it just to counter his comment towards me, Valentino actually cleaned up. He was wearing a dark shirt, black jeans and a silver ring on his left thumb. Along with his bleached hair and pirate earring, he really looked nice.

Lydia and Anthoine were already seen waiting outside of the cinema when we arrived. Of course they don't notice us approaching, their face covering each other as they have a full make out session right there on the street.
"Aright, don't forget to come up for air." I interrupt. Anthoine's cheeks blossoms being caught in the act. "Naomi, you look stunning!" Lydia goes to pull on the bottom of my dress, revealing a little too much of my thighs. "Stop it." I hiss, slapping her hands away. Valentino gives Anthoine one of those silent nods, which Anthoine is seen returning.
"I'm glad you decided to tag along Vale, didn't know you were such a big fan of horror movies." Lydia goes to give him one of her loving hugs. I watch on, fantasizing of what it would have felt like. Valentino and I have never gotten around to exchange hugs. I'd like to think Anthoine was doing the same, but by the looks of it, he was just trying to keep his cool watching his girlfriend hug another boy.
Inside there are heaps of people, all here to see the same thing, Graveyard Soirée. I don't mind horror movies, really, I just hate it when they get too realistic, you know. I'm sure I won't have to visit any graveyards real soon, Nonna is in the shape of her life.
"What kind of snack do you like?" Valentino turns to me. "No worries Vale, you don't have to buy the snacks for me." He prevents me from approaching the counter, by grabbing a hold of my wrist. His swift movement did not only surprise me, Lydia and Anthoine were also left with their mouths slightly open. "Naomi I want to." The tingles in the pit of my stomach reappears, this time more intense than the last time. "Okay." Is all I can say. I watch as he goes to take his place in line.
"I'll buy the snacks for you too babe, what do you like? Popcorn?" Sure Anthoine, whatever you like. Lydia is quick to send him away in order to take me aside. "He's buying the snacks for you." Like a schoolgirl she squeals. "I know Lydia, I was just there."
"Did you see the way he grabbed you." She continues, now jumping up and down. "Yes, now calm down." I pin her back to the ground by grabbing a hold of her shoulders. "Let's not make a big deal out of this."
"Oh, come on Naomi. He clearly likes you."
I bite my lip, tasting the ambrosia lipstick. "You really think so."
"Girl, I know so. I suggest you act really scared during the movie, to see if he reacts."
I frown, "Now why would I do that?"
"Why wouldn't you." She smiles and extends her tongue at me.
Inside the theater I had the privilege to lead us towards our row. I knew Valentino was behind, which meant that we would end up together, seating wise, that is. "Thanks." I said as I got a bucket of buttered popcorn in my lap once we sat down. "I've got sour candies and chocolate M&M's too, just tell me and I'll give them to you." My toes are clenched in my boots, Valentino was being too sweet.
A half bucket of popcorn later, the movie finally starts further dimming the lights in the theater. I glance over to Lydia and Anthoine who are already comfortable in each other's arms. It was their anniversary after all.
Graveyard Soirée was about this young guy who gets this summer job tending the graveyard grounds. As the movie progresses, freaky shit starts happening, one of them being the guy in the movie meeting this weird girl who likes to hang out in the cemetery. Of course they fall in love, leading to more freaky shit happening. My guess is that she was a ghost, envying the living people. If my predictions were right, I wouldn't know because halfway into the movie my hands are covering my face and fingers plugged into my ears. It's like they want me to get a heart attack with how many jump scares the movie has. At one point I'm forced to unclog my ears as Valentino taps me on the shoulder. "You okay?" He leans in and whispers, his hot breath caressing my cheek. I nod. "I'm fine, I just hate jump scares." Valentino's eyes were seen sparkling in the reflected light from the movie screen. "Hang in there, I'm sure it's almost over." He smiled, not only that, he goes to put a heavy arm over my shoulder, making me feel free to lean against him. I consciously ignore Lydia's excited gaze by turning my head to the screen. Valenitno's arms stayed that way, until the very end of the movie. I didn't get a chance to act extra scared like Lydia had suggested. I had been really scared without any real effort.
"I'm hungry. I say we grab some pizza." Lydia said, once we were outside again. "It's late babe, I'm sure there is no place that is still open." Anthoine refuses to meet any of our eyes. "Fine we can go to my house and I'll fix us something." She insisted.
"Your house?" I repeat.
"That is if you guys want to come with, or do you reckon it is too late?"
"Well..." Anthoine begins, however Valentino interrupts. "I'm down."
"Great, let's all meet at my house then. See you guys in twenty minutes?"
We went our separate ways, Valentino and I heading back to the truck. My legs were really tired at this point. Not paying attention, I accidentally stumbled on them. Valentino must have thought I meant something by tilting his way, without hesitation he threw his arm around me again. Not that I felt like protesting.
