Epilogue-Tremors

The Dormant Chronicles

Epilogue- Tremors

The day was calm to Laura, and yet she knew her father would like it. It was December and the feeling of unrest in her heart was great. Not even little Beverly, her sweet toddler, could cheer her up.

Halfway across the country Elsie also looked at the sky. A much different sky, a sky of opportunity and hope, not sadness and despair. Elsie could remember that fateful day in December, but put it in the back of her mind. Her husband, Julius called out to her that lunch was ready. She ignored and kept looking at the clouds. Her long time friend Laura always knew where to look for funny clouds. Now she was gone, halfway across the country in New York. She just stayed in her hometown, Silver Creek, Nebraska.

Laura was thinking about Elsie and Julius, about her home. She knew she couldn't go back until her husband, Howard was dismissed from the military. Looking back, she remembered a time long past, where her father would read her stories, and sing her song. One of her favorites was an improvised tune that goes like this:

You are my child

I hope to keep it that way

Because I love you

And when I'm gone

There'll be tremors

And when I'm gone

There'll be quakes

Because knows I love you

I hope to keep it that way

There'll be tremors when I'm gone

I know you'll still love me

When I'm gone...

'Cause tremors are there

Because tremors are there, my child.

Laura always loved that song and knew today the tremors were there, and knew they would be back. She remembered the day after the disaster, it was a whirlwind of reporters and people, all hoping to know what happened, and she didn't crack, saying that it was a terrible accident, and kept the truth, even if painful to herself. She heard the wind blowing strong, quick gusts.

Elsie looked at the book she had found, a little picture book depicting a scene from "The Gate," a now fantasy tale spread around the world. She knew it was true, and began to read.

A thousand miles away Laura was reading the same thing, and had the urge to go see Elsie. She booked a flight to Lincoln airport, and rushed off.

Elsie lived close to Lincoln airport, and watched as planes flew overhead, taking off to go places, and landing to see Nebraska, her home. She hadn't travelled out of Nebraska in seven years, and planned to keep it that way. Then she got a phone call, from Laura? She reluctantly answered, "Hey, Laura is that you?"

"Yeah, I'm here, I'm coming to Nebraska, don't worry nobody died."

"Laura, don't you think we should talk about this later?" Elsie questioned."

"Okay, I guess I've got to go flight takes off soon."

Laura hung up, and began to drive to JFK International Airport, and boarded her flight.

Elsie watched the clock for hours as she tended to dinner, and finally a knock at the door. Nope! Only girl scouts selling cookies. An hour later, another knock at the door, Laura walks inside to the well-kept home, and smiles. "Just as I imagined it." Laura laughed.

The pair chatted late into the night until the death of James and Beverly came up. Laura stopped talking and began to cry. No soothing could stop her until Elsie began to sing a song she heard from Laura six years ago,

"Cause there'll be tremors, so fear not, even if a tremor comes upon you. Your friends will be there, your friends will sooth you. Tremors strong, and tremors small, you will be safe with your friends."

Laura stopped and said, "The tremors are there."

The End!
