"August, meet your little sister, April..."

Little did I know that those would be the words that changed my life forever. I was only two at the time, and when you're two, you're a bit naive. I didn't know what was going to happen in a couple years. One thing would lead to another, and that's how it'd be for the rest of my life.

My little toddler self, slightly curly dark brown hair, grass-green eyes, climbed up onto the hospital bed where my mom lay, holding my newborn kid sister. I nearly slipped, being quite petite for my age, but my dad caught me, helping me up onto the bed.

He was unusually happy today. Back then, I thought it was obvious since my mom just had another baby, but now I'm starting to doubt that.

I looked over at my kid sister. Her eyes had just opened, and I swear I saw her look right at me. My mom was finally able to hold her since she was born. April had to stay in the nursery in her incubator after her birth. I did see her in the nursery, but it was difficult since, again, I was so small.

April looked almost exactly like me when I was baby. However, she didn't have my exact features. She had auburn colored hair and bluish grey colored eyes, like my mom. My dad's eyes are a blazing dark blue. The weird thing is, I'm the only person in my family with green eyes. To this day, I still don't know where I inherited it from.

Being the curious two year old I was, I tried to hold her tiny hand. April gently gripped some of my fingers. It was then I knew that I was officially in charge of her. I would protect her at all costs. She was my kid sister I needed to be there for her at all times. I realized that at only two.

"Now Auggie.." My dad said, sitting beside me on the bed. "April is you kid sister, and you gotta make sure nothing ever happens to her, you hear?"

I nodded. "Gotta protect her." I said. "Gotta protect kid sister..."

April was my kid sister, and I loved her to the moon and back. She was only one of two people I love, the other person being my mom. Not my dad though. I knew he didn't love me. I always knew...
