Chapter 33; Angry Cactuses and Other Regrets

Leyna's POV

"We're got to close it down!" the Doctor said as we walked into the flight deck.

Rossiter, for once instead of letting Addams talk, said, "No chance, mate. We'er going home."

"We're just a salvage team", Addams added. "Local politics has got nothing to do with us. Not unless there's a carnival. Sooner we get back to Vinvocci space, the better."

"We're not leaving", the Doctor said. He let go of my hand to get the sonic out of his pocket and sabotaged the flight controls. The whole spaceship went completely dark.

Addams was about to protest when the Doctor shushed her.

"Shush, shush, shush, shush, shush, shush."

The Master must be trying to track down the ship, and we don't want to get blown up, so we had to oblige and be quiet for a few minutes. After those few minutes were over, Addams walked over to the controls.

"No sign of any missiles. No sign of anything. You've wrecked the place!" she yelled at the Doctor.

Rossiter joined her and looked at some other screens on the console. "The engines are burnt out. All we're got is auxiliary lights. Everything else is kaput. We can't move. We're stuck in orbit", Rossiter concluded.

"Thanks to you, you idiot", Addams said and left.

I looked at the Doctor, "Doctor, you've got a plan right? I bet you've got a plan, haven't you? You've always got something up your sleeve."

The Doctor ignored me and walked back to the teleport room, me following him.

"What are you doing? Fixing the ship?" I asked him.

"Just trying to fix the heating", he replied, bending down and sonicking something.

"Doctor, I loved travelling with you. It was truly amazing", I told him.

"What, aren't we going to go travelling after this?" he asked me. I guess he was lying about knowing what happens next, or he just thought something else was going to happen.

"Yeah", I lied. "And, also, I wanted to say thanks. For saving our planet countless times and for saving me."

"Leyna, nothing is going to happen to you. Stop acting like you're going to die", he said sternly.

Death was a very sensitive subject with him. And we all know why. For someone who seems like such an awesome person, someone we look up to, an anonymous savior, he's really something we wouldn't want to become. Someone who grieves everyday and can't forgive himself. I mean, if you destroyed your planet and killed all your people, you wouldn't forgive yourself either. But he has done so many things that we never thank him for, and I think that might be one of the reasons he can't forgive himself.

I knew I had to change the subject. "Listen, I, I want you to have this. I've kept it since my brother was in the army and I thought..." I showed him the revolver I was hiding in my pocket.

"No", he replied.

"But if you take it, you could..."

"No. You had that gun in the mansion. You could have shot the Master there and then."

"I was too scared. And plus, he's more your enemy than mine. If you kill him first, he won't kill either of us", I told him.

"But Leyna", he stopped working on the heating, "that's how the Master started. It's not like I'm an innocent. I've taken lives. I got worse. I got clever. Manipulated people into taking their own. Sometimes I think a Time Lord lives too long. I can't. I just can't."

"If the Master dies, what happens to all the people?" I asked him.

"I don't know." I looked in his eyes and saw he was lying.

"Doctor, what happens?"

"The template snaps."

"Then take the gun. that's an order. You take the gun and save your life. And please don't die. You're the most wonderful man and I don't want you to die."

"What about you Leyna? I'll regenerate and you'll die. What do I do then?" he asked me.

I didn't know what to answer, how to answer him, so I was very thankful when we hear a voice come from the flight deck.

"A star fell from the sky." "Don't you want to know where from? Because now it makes sense, Doctor. The whole of my life. My destiny. The star was a diamond. And the diamond is a White point star. And I have worked all night to sanctify that gift. Now the star is mine. I can increase the signal and use it as a lifeline. Do you get it now? Do you see? Keep watching, Doctor. This should be spectacular. Over and out."

"Doctor, what's he on about? What's he doing? What does he mean?" I asked the Doctor.

I knew it was nothing good because it was the Master that was saying this. If it was anyone else, I could care less. But this seems oddly familiar. A White Point star. I feel like I read about it somewhere. Probably the Doctors diary, I find out a lot from that.

"A White Point star is only found on one planet. Gallifrey. Which means it's the Time Lords. The Time Lords are returning", the Doctor looked at me worried.

"Doctor, isn't that good? They are your people", I asked him.

He shook his head and took the revolver out of my hand, and he ran towards the flight deck. I ran after the Doctor and joined him in the flight deck. A signal, a very loud signal, was heard.

"What's that?" Addams asked Rossiter.

"Coming from Earth. It's on every single wavelength", Rossiter answered.

The Doctor was rushing around, working on bits and pieces.

"Doctor, you said your people were dead. Past tense", I said.

"The Time War. And the whole War was Timelocked. Like, sealed inside a bubble. It's not a bubble, but just think of it as a bubble. Nothing can get in or out of the Timelock. Don't you see? Nothing can get in or out, except something that was already there", the Doctor explained.

"The signal! Since he was a kid", I said. The Master's signal is the only possible thing.

"If they can follow the signal, they can escape before they die", the Doctor informed me.

"I've heard you talk about you people like they're wonderful and one of the smartest races, but now they're changing a fixed point?" I asked.

"That's how I chose to remember them. And then they went to war. An endless war, and it changed them right to the core. You know my enemies, Leyna. The Time Lords are more dangerous than any of them. Now", he turned to Addams and Rossiter", this is a salvage ship, yes?" They nodded. "So you've got asteroid lasers!" the Doctor said.

"Yeah, but they're all frazzled", Rossiter told us.

The Doctor threw a lever and two gun alcoves open in either side of the flight controls.

"Consider the unfrazzled", he said. "Now, Addams, I'm going to need you on navigation. Rossiter, get in the laser-pod. Leyna."

"Yes?" I asked him, awaiting my orders.

"Laser number two."

Addams looked towards the Doctor, "The ship can't move. It's dead!"

"Fix the heating?" he asked while throwing two levers forward, and the ship powers up.

"But now they can see us", Addams said.

"Oh, yes!" the Doctor said.
