Chapter 27. Master Of Disguise

Doctor's POV

We were in a junk yard, looking for the Master. A construction junk yard. Leyna and I stuck together and Martha and Jack split up. Right now, we were standing up on a brick hill. And that's when the banging started.

"What's that?" Leyna asked me. "Is that the Master?"

I nodded my head and recited what the ood said, "Knock four times."

Then again with the four beats from a metal drum. Over and over again. So we started running towards it, dodging beams and piles of bricks on our way over. As we were running, I saw the Master run from the metal garbage can and onto one of the brick hills. I expected him to yell at me about how I let him die, but instead he just stood there and screamed at me. What is he planning? He jumped super high from the brick hill to the ground. Seriously, what is he planning? Doesn't he know that he's burning up his energy? Leyna tapped me, because I was lost in thought, and I saw that the Master was ahead of us by a lot more than before. Guess he started running again.

We have to catch him, stop him. There is no other way. Leyna started running up ahead, and then he hopped up on a pile of beams. He was laughing like a mad man. I started reasoning with him. This was most likely the only chance I had to have an actual, serious conversation with him.

"Please let me help. You're burning up your own life force!" but he wouldn't listen. He started laughing, before running off again. Leyna and I tried to follow him, but Jack stopped us. I went over to the pile of beams that he was standing on before, but he was gone. Like he vanished. I flicked the bottoms of my jacket backwards in exhaustion and anger. If Jack wasn't there, then maybe we would've been able to catch the Master and end this once and for all. I walked back over to Jack and Leyna, and saw that they were catching up on what just happened.

"Martha, she was taken by U.N.I.T. They needed her", Jack told us, out of breath. He had his hands resting on his bent knees while panting from running too much.
"Now listen, Ianto needs me, I have to go, too. Leyna, stay safe", he went over and kissed Leyna's forehead.
"And Doctor, till we meet again". With that, he ran over to a car that was pulled up on the side of the road.

"Leyna, we need to talk" I told her as I started leading her towards a cafe.

"Leyna, I'm going to die."
I looked around the café to make sure no one was particularly listening to us.

"So am I one day," Leyna joked.

"Don't you dare", I told her.

"Okay, I'll try not to." She put her hands up in the 'I surrender' pose, giggled a bit, and then saw my face. She sat up straighter and looked at me more seriously while she rested her arms at her sides.

"I was told. He will knock four times. That was the prophecy. Knock four times and then..."

"Yeah, but I thought, what I read in your diary, your people can regenerate", she asked me, her eyebrows furrowed. She was clearly confused. I guess she didn't read the whole diary.

"I can still die. If I'm killed before full regeneration then I'm dead." I leaned in forward to make my point more clear. I could see that tears were starting to form in Leyna's eyes, and I could feel some forming in mine.
"Even then, even if I change it feels like dying. Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away. And I'm dead."

"Doctor, we have to get ready. You can't die."

"Neither can you, Leyna. Come on."

We walked back over to the TARDIS, when I remembered that the Master wouldn't be hiding. He can't hide.

"Leyna, go to bed, I have unfinished business."

She walked over to her room and went to sleep, to my surprise. She's usually the one to ask to come along, but I have no time to question why. Because I know the most valuable piece of information. I know where the Master is.

////////{Later On}\\\\\\

The Master was there, sitting on concrete in a run down part of the abandoned warehouse that we were in. It was night time, and it was hard to see. Since the warehouse was abandoned, and run down, the electricity didn't work, which meant that I would have to navigate my way throughout this place in the dark. Which was completely fine, since I already saw the Master's silhouette. I stood behind him and we slowly started walking towards each other.

He must have seen me, or heard my converse slapping on the concrete floor, because he got up and turned around so that he was facing me. One of the lights flickered on and we were able to see each other. He clenched his hands into fists and purple electricity started going around his fists. He flung his arms forward creating fires behind me, but I didn't care. I meant business and nothing would stop me now.

He started rubbing his hands together, generating more electricity then before, and when I was close enough, he shot it right at me. Okay, I guess I can be stopped. The light started flickering again, but it somehow stayed on. How? When I first came in here I thought that there was no electricity in the building. I was starting to seriously wonder how and started to brainstorm my ideas of how and who when pain went throughout me. The shot, it actually hit me this time.

I fell to my knees as I was consumed by a massive amount of pain that started in my chest and spread throughout my whole body. The Master walked over and shoved me down onto my stomach. He started walking away from me, but walked back towards me. He put his hand out and I looked up at him.

"I had estates", he started, "do you remember my fathers mine back at home? Pastures of red grass stretching far across the slopes of mount Perdition. We used to run across those fields all day, calling up at the sky." I took his hand and he shoved it bak down, then rested his arm at his sde.He sat down in front of me, not caring that I was suffering. " Look at us now."

"All that eloquence. But how many people have you killed?" I asked him. The chances of him answering me was less than the chances of him getting angry and hurting me again. Again, didn't care, I have to know what's going on so that Leyna will be okay.

"I am so hungry", he bluntly stated.

"Your resurrection went wrong. That energy. Your body's ripped open. Now you're killing yourself", I explained to him. I guess he knew what he was doing, but not the consequences.

"That human Christmas out there. They eat so much. All that roasting meat, cakes and red wine. Hot, fat, blood, food. Pots, plates of meat, and flesh, and grease, and juice, and baking, burnt, sticky hot skin. Hot. It's so hot," he said while getting up from where he was crouched beside me. I could tell that he was deep in thought and that he was starting to get a bit psychotic. I had to intervene now, before he did something incredibly crazy. I already know I'm a bit late on that, because I could see him licking his lips.

"Stop it."

"Sliced. Sliced. Sliced", he mimicked the actions of slicing meat.

I turned on my side and put my hand on my wound, "Stop it", I repeated, louder this time.

"It's mine. It's mine. It's mine to eat and eat and eat", he was mimicking the action of eating now, and I mustered all my strength to take my hand off my wound and slap his hand.

"Stop it. What if I ask you for help? There's more at work tonight than you and me."

"Oh yeah?" he questioned.

"I've been told something is returning", I informed him.

"And here I am", he said while stretching his arms out and towards the sky like the statue in Rio de Janeiro, 'Christ the Redeemer.'

"No, something more", as I said this he put his arms down slowly, disappointed. He then scurried over to me and knelled by my side. He put his fore fingers on his temples.

"But it hurts", he proclaimed.

"I was told the end of time", I continued, ignoring the fact that he said something hurts.

"It hurts. Doctor, the noise. The noise in my head, Doctor. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Stronger than ever before. Can't you hear it?" he was moving his hands around while saying this, and placed his fingers back on his temples when he was done. Whatever he was talking about, it must be making him go insane.

"I'm sorry", I said.

"Listen, listen, listen, listen. Every minute, every second, every beat of my hearts, there it is, calling to me. Please listen. "

The Master looked around, searching for where this 'noise' had come from. He looked at me expecting that I would say something about the sound, but there was no sound.

"I can't hear it", I told him.
He thrust his forehead onto mine and his fingers from his temples to mine.

"Listen", he repeated.

And that's when I heard it, just like when we were standing in the junk yard chasing him earlier this day. It was the same pattern, but just repeated on a different noise. It was still the four beats repeated continuously, but this time it wasn't played on an oil drum, it was played on an actual drum.

I pulled away from the Master.

"What?" he asked me.

I propped myself up so I was sitting and was slowly bringing myself to standing up.

"But...." I trailed off. It was just so... strange. The noise, I mean.

"What!" he repeated forcefully.

"I heard it. But there's no noise. There never has been. It's just your insanity. What is it? What's inside your head?"

I was standing now, and nothing made sense. This four beat rhythm, it wasn't evident. It was there, but it wasn't there. You hear it, but you don't listen. It's the simplest rhythm in the history of everything
, and yet it was making people go insane.

"It's real. It's real. It's real!" He screamed as he started running away again. In fact, the only thing evident about the rhythm is that it makes people go insane. And all from one boy and a time vortex. I started to run after him, but Leyna appeared out of nowhere and stopped me.

"Doctor, it's not worth it", she told me.
She grabbed a sonic screwdriver, my sonic screwdriver, out of her pocket, pointed it at the light, and pressed the button. The light flickered off, and we were left with only the light from the burning fires and the stars coming in from the windows.

I was amazed at first, but then checked my pocket.

"Leyna, my sonic! How did you...?" I started asking her. Like I was assuming, my pocket was empty and that was in fact my sonic screwdriver that Leyna was using.

"Doctor, you really think I was going to let you leave the TARDIS and be defeated by the Master on your own? What kind of person do you think I am?" she joked. Yup, that's my Leyna.

I propped my arm over her shoulders and she helped me limp my way back to the TARDIS. I was getting the key out of my pocket when she gently shove my hand down and took one out of hers. She opened the TARDIS doors, and again I stand there speechless. First my sonic screwdriver, then my keys, what else was Leyna taking from me?

She brought me over to the infirmary and I sat down on one of the chairs.

"I didn't give you a key yet, did I? I'm sorry, I guess I thought I gave you one. I'll give you one after we get the Master. Then, me and you will travel the stars again, okay?" I asked her.

She looked at me distantly, like she was daydreaming of something else.

"Yeah...", she stated sadly, "after this."

She looked at me and I saw tears in here eyes.

"Leyna?", I asked," Is everything alright?"

"Everything's alright for now, Doctor. Because we can just skip this, stay in the little world of time and space and forget. Or at least we did do that... But as long as your chest is okay" she was bandaging up my wound and she stopped to look at me.

"What do you mean by skip?" I asked her. The definition was obvious, but what she meant in this occasion could mean anything.

"Doctor, all we do is run, we don't have to face our fears. Inside this box is an endless possibility. But... I..", she started explaining.

"You what, Leyna?" I asked her.

"I think I found the end. Where you can't Se the beginning, and the darkness is starting to cloud around you. You don't know how it got like this, but somehow you've been travelling with a mad man and skipping all the fears and sad moments in life you've never wanted to face. Things you can just run away from. But... Doctor... I've come to a point in life where you realize you can't run from everything."

Who would tell her that? She's not dying!

"Leyna, who told you that?" I questioned her. The questions never seem to stop with us.

"You did", she glumly stated while putting everything back in the first aid medical kit.
