Chapter 19. The Moment Has Come

War Doctor's POV

"You wanted a bid red button", the Moment was saying as the box produced one.

"One big bang, no more Time Lords. No more Daleks. Are you sure?"

"I was sure when I came in here. There is no other way."

"You've seen the men you will become."

"Those men. Extraordinary."

"They were you."

"No. They are the Doctor."

"You're the Doctor, too."

"No. Great men are forged in fire. It is privilege of lesser men to light the flame, whatever the cost."

I put my hand above the big red button, and I recall all the sounds of the children's laughter before this great war started. And I have to be the one to end it all.

"You know the sound the TARDIS makes? That wheezing, groaning. The sound that brings hope wherever it goes."

"Yes. Yes, I like to think it does."

"To anyone who hears it, Doctor. Anyone, however lost."

I watched as two TARDISes parked themselves at the far end of the barn.

"Even you."

"We told you. He hasn't done it yet." Leyna said as everyone left their TARDISes.

"Go away now, all of you. This is for me", I told them. I faced the button again. This would decide everything.

I saw sand shoes shuffle beside Leyna and walk over towards me. "These events should be time-locked. We shouldn't even be here."

"Yeah, well I had to come", Leyna said.

"Why?" I asked her.

"Before, I got a visit", she said and gestured with her head towards the Moment.

"So something let us through. Someone let us through", Bowtie said.

"You clever boys", the Moment smiled.

"Go back. Go back to your lives. Go and be the Doctor that I could never be. Make it worthwhile", I told them.

"All those years, burying you in my memory", sand shoes started.

"Pretending you didn't exist. Keeping you a secret, even from myself", Bowtie rebounded.

"Pretending you weren't the Doctor, when you were the Doctor more than anybody else." They were going back and forth again.

" You were the Doctor on the day that it wasn't possible to get it right."

"But this time."

"You don't have to do it alone."

I watched as they put their hands on top of mine on the button.

"Thank you."

"What we do today is not out of fear or hatred. It is done because there is no other way", sand shoes started.

"And it is done in the name of the many lives we are failing to save", Bowtie added.

"But guys.." Leyna started.

"Leyna, don't worry, this has to be done", I said.

"No but.." Clara started in, too.

"Clara, this has to happen. I don't even know why or how we're here, but this has to happen", Bowtie said.

"But guys!" Leyna started again.

"What?" sand shoes asked.

"Is this really what you want? To see your kind suffer, to not be there when they're wiped out? To feel grief all the time and not be able to cope?" While Leyna was saying this, the Moment put a type of projection around us of all the children screaming and people running and fleeing for their lives.
"How can you live and be fine right now, when there is another way? You don't have to do this."

"Guys, Leyna is right. I mean, look at you. The warrior," she pointed towards me, "the hero," she pointed at sand shoes, "and you."

"What am I?"

"Have you really forgotten?"

I watched as bowtie nodded.

"We've got enough warriors, an any old idiot can be a hero. Do what you've always done. Be a Doctor."

"And Doctor," Leyna started in now, "you've told me that you chose this name as a promise. And what was that promise?"

"Never cruel or cowardly", sand shoes said while taking his hand off the button.

"Never give up, never give in", I said, taking mine off as well.

I wish there was another way, but i know there isn't. How could there be another way? There is only one way, and that's to use the Moment. There is no way that we can stop this Time War without killing everyone.

"Bowtie, I think you've had a long enough time to think about what to do. And by the looks of things, I can tell that you want this day to change", Leyna finished.

"You're right. I've had 400 years to think about this, and I change my mind." Bowtie sonicked the box and the red button vanished into it.

"Sorry, I know everything that's happened has been really cool, and I don't mean to burst your bubble and all, but there is still billions upon billions of Daleks over us", Leyna pointed out.

"Yes, but there is something that those billions of Daleks don't know", sand shoes said, stepping towards Leyna.

"And if they did, they would probably send for reinforcements", Bowie said, also stepping towards the two girls.

"What? What don't they know?" Clara asked, hope pouring out of her eyes.

"This time, there's three of us", bowtie said.

"Oh! Oh yes! That is good! That is brilliant!" I said, a wave of triumph engulfing me.

"Oh, oh, oh! I'm getting that too! That is brilliant!" Sand shoes said while smiling his big, goofy smile. The smile of a mad man.

"Ha, ha, ha! I've been thinking about this for centuries!" Bowtie said, flinging his arms every which way. I swear, he can't talk without doing that.

"She didn't just show me any old future, she showed me the exact future I needed to see!" I practically screamed while walking over to the box, the box that the Moment had previously been sitting upon when the time vortex came into view.

"Now you're getting it!" she said, smiling.

"Oh, bad wolf girl, I could kiss you!"

"Yeah, that's going to happen", she joked.

"Sorry, did you just say Bad Wolf?" sand shoes asked.

"I'll explain later", Leyna said while enveloping him in a hug.

"So, what are we going to do? What's the plan?" Clara asked while joining us in our little makeshift circle that we just randomly formed.

"Well, the Dalek fleet is above us, firing non-stop at Gallifrey", Sand shoes started to explain.

"And, what would happen if the whole planet just, disappeared?" Bowtie asked Clara.

"Just a bit of an ask", Clara responded, clearly confused. I'm sorry to say, but she just wasn't on the same level as all of us, but she was still smarter than us all.

"Well, the Daleks would be firing at each other. They would kill themselves in their own crossfire", sand shoes said.

"But where would Gallifrey be?" Clara asked him.

"Frozen. Frozen in an instant of time, safe and hidden away."

"Exactly", Leyna said.

"Like", bowtie continued.

"A painting", I finished.

The projected image around us stopped, and the original barn was the only thing we could all see.

"When the Moment came and gave me a visit, she told me that I had saved all these children. Doctor, I'm the one that gave you this decision!" Leyna said while giving me a hug.

"Well, that is a reason why I wish I could've changed this event. You were always complaining about how you hated this. How I blew up Gallifrey", bowtie said to her.

"I've never said anything about it, though", Leyna said, confusion spreading over her face.

"Sorry, guys, just one more question", Clara said while tapping me and looking at sand shoes and bowtie.

"Yes?" I asked her.

"How are we going to do this?"
