Chapter 15. Who Counted?

We were walking to the zygon control room, that's where we were told by Elizabeth when she stopped us down the hall. It would be a long walk, so we started chatting. When bowtie and I got out there, we could see the war Doctor and the Doctor arguing.

"What is it that makes you so ashamed of being a grown up? Oh, the way you both look at me. What is that? I'm trying to think of a better word than dread." Guess their stares towards the war Doctor weren't that nice. I guess he noticed.

"It must be really recent for you", the Doctor stated the reason behind his madness.

"Recent?" Like the moment said back in the Doctor's room, today was his choice. He hadn't decided yet.

I heard bowtie clear his throat as he started to speak, "The Time War. The last day. The day you killed them all."

"The day we killed them all", the Doctor corrected.

Bowtie swooshed his hand in the air. "Same thing."

I saw the moment walk from behind me, to beside the war Doctor.

"It's history for them. All decided. They think their future is real. They don't know it's still up to you."

The War Doctor looked at the moment, then at my confused face.

"I don't talk about it", he said looking at his shoes.

"You're not talking about", the Doctor pointed out.

"Go on, ask them. Ask them what you need to know." The moment stopped the War Doctor as she said this, so that he would get everyone else's full attention.

When everyone stopped and looked at him, he looked at both of the Doctors. I stood at his side.

"Did you ever count?"

"Count what?" Bowtie asked.

And now I know what he's asking about. The day Gallifrey burned, the man who did it, the people that died. The children. In my mind I see the image of the yellow sticky note.

'You have saved 2.47 billion children.

-Bad Wolf'

He's asking about the children. He's asking who counted.

"The children. He's asking about the children."

Clara looked over at me, with a face that read 'how did you know that?'

"What children?" Elizabeth questioned. Wow, I forget she was here since I came out into the hall. By now, there was a little circle around the War Doctor and I.

"The children you killed." I was on the verge of tears. Not only did the Doctor lose so many people, but he had to stand idly by because he burned his planet.

"I don't remember", bowtie said casually. Like killing billions was something he did daily.

"You don't remember? Doctor, I really thought you cared. Or else you wouldn't be sad all the time!" Clara said, on the verge of tears as well.

"Well one of you must have counted." Elizabeth started. "If I did that, I would count, and I wouldn't forget."

"Two point four seven billion" The Doctor and I said in sync. He looked at me and straightened his pin stripe.

"Leyna, how do you know that? You shouldn't know that."

"You forgot? Four hundred years, is that all it takes?" The War Doctor didn't even care that my Doctor was talking to me, he just needed to know why someone would forget that.

"I moved on" bowtie said, starting to walk away.

My Doctor stopped him and looked him right in the eyes.

"Where? Where can you be now that you would forget something like that?"

"Spoilers."

Clara and Elizabeth clearly had gotten bored of their bickering. Clara waved at me and they both left to the zygon control room.

"No, no, no. For once I would like to know where I'm going."

"No, you really wouldn't."

The War Doctor turned to me and the moment.

"I don't know who they are. I haven't gotten the faintest idea."

"They're you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey," I started explaining to him. I know that he knows that they're both him, he just doesn't understand how he got into so much pain and discomfort.

"The man who regrets and the man who forgets", the moment joined in, "the moment is coming. The moment is me. You have to decide."

By now, both of the bickering Doctor's had tuned into this half conversation. They couldn't here what the moment was saying, so we looked pretty strange. It was like someone writing an exam and getting 100% by doing nothing. Strange and confusing.

The War Doctor thought about what the moment had to offer. It was really just one option: burn your home. She wasn't asking him to make a decision, she was asking him when he would press the button. The big red button that goes boom. Asking him when he would kill billions and become the last of his kind. But how would he save the children? The moment put on the sticky note how I helped save 2.47 billion children. And if there was only one option, how would I fit into this story?

The War Doctor had made his decision and started walking toward the zygon control centre.

"No."

"No?" my Doctor asked. Like I said, they tuned into half of a conversation.

The War Doctor stopped right outside the door of the control centre and looked back at the three, well, technically four, of us.

"Just, no."

He turned around and walked through the door. The two Doctor's followed in behind him, but the moment and I stayed. We needed to talk.

"You gave him one option. But on the sticky note you said that I helped save 2.47 billion children. How is that possible?"

"I gave him one choice, you gave him multiple ideas. He can change the future."

"But it already happened, wouldn't it be history."

"By the Doctor's standards you can change both. Never let time be the boss of you, Leyna."

She walked through the centre door and I followed, no more questions to ask. No more reasons for me to see to.
