Chapter 97: The COVID Series
SCMP (a news outlet) reported on 11 Feb 2020 that at least 500 Wuhan medical staff have been infected with nCoV but they said they have been told not to release the full picture to the public; so far three have died.
It's been 5 days since the 'mandatory quarantine' came into effect and so far we have observed:
- Rule: those under mandatory quarantine, must declare their HK address and phone number
(but whether those declared details are true 'rely on honesty')
- Rule: Those under mandatory quarantine, must start their quarantine within 2 hours of arrival HK
(you can actually round the whole of HK in 2 hours. Plus, whether they actually truly go into quarantine within 2 hours 'rely on honesty')
- Question: how to and who organises transport for those in quarantine?
Govt: organise it yourself
(which means public transport as most people in HK do not have their own cars. So that means public transports will be infected)
- The government permits quarantined people and their families, who may not be in quarantine, to live together
(which means whole families can have outbreaks)
- Question: how to ensure those in mandatory quarantine won't actually leave their quarantine?
('Rely on honesty')
Remember when a few colleagues and I have had lying patients and patients attending appointments despite supposedly being in quarantine? Those are not isolated cases. If we 'rely on honesty', this will kill.
Hospital supplies have run low on protective equipment, including face masks, face shields, and protective gowns. Our healthcare assistants are limited to only two face masks per shift. They are the ones with the most patient exposure, helping the patients eat, change, wash, changing their nappies, adjusting their beds etc. Meanwhile, policemen continued to be decked in full hazmat gear, way more protected than ambulance crew and other frontline medical workers. How? What is happening to the funding for protective equipment when even hospital staff can't be protected -- but policemen can?
Meanwhile, a group of policemen are caught taking selfies whilst on duty in their hazmat suits.
So that's what the hazmats are for.
