Chapter 2 - The Truth
The man is nuts. Cassie thought about James while she's boarding on the train to MMH.
He is nuts. Completely nuts. She said mutely to herself as she remembered what he's been doing this last few weeks since he arrived.
She has been mustering all her courage so as not to snap at him whenever he purposefully choose her to assist him.
Just like yesterday when Alyzza assigned her and Brian to a patient.
"Alyzza, I need Dr. Miller with me please. If you don't mind" he said casually.
This and similar instances have gained curious stares from the staffs and most importantly her two bestfriends, Brian and Alyzza.
If only she could avoid him. But how on earth would that happen if they work at the same department. After all, he is a fellow and the owner of the hospital. Needless to say, he is above and beyond her. But the man is dangerously getting on her nerves.
She thought, sighing as the train stopped yet another station to load and unload passengers.
"Oh great. Just what I needed." She sarcastically muttered under her breath as she saw James enter the train.
She tried to look away. Hoping against hope he wouldn't see her.
But luck isn't on her side today.
As she is standing just a few feet away from the door, whoever enters and look on their right will automatically see her.
He smiled when he saw her and walked towards her.
"Querida! What a way to start my day." He said teasingly.
She closed her eyes and tried calming herself before looking at him again. "Will you stop calling me that?"
"Nope. Can't do." He shrugged
"Ugh! unbelievable." Letting out a frustrated sign.
"I'm sorry." He was suddenly serious which caught her off guard.
"I just don't want give the staff anything to gossip about." She said frankly
"I'm talking about five years ago." He said looking her straight in the eye.
This is what she's been avoiding. It was too painful to recall.
"I've put everything behind. Let's keep it that way". She said trying to convince herself.
For a moment, he seemed to be contemplating so hard.
"Well, you're right. Past is past." he said smiling which didn't reach to his eyes. There was sadness in them. This is not the same James she knew. He used to be so stubborn. The one who broke her heart so badly.
"I'm really looking forward to be working with you." He said sincerely.
She was about to respond when the train came to a sudden stop which sent her unceremoniously right to his chest.
She felt his left hand held her waist to steady her as he whispered to her ear.
"I got you" he whispered.
Cassie lied. She hasn't put everything behind. And with those three words and his touch, all the memories of their past came rushing back to her like a filmstrip.
The first time they met at Hotel Riu Plaza Quadalajara.
The first time she heard him say her name at Professor Acosta's office.
The fundraiser event where he won her in the auction.
Yes. The fundraiser and what happened after that.
As they reached his car, James immediately opened the door to let Cassie get in. Closing the door beside Cassie, he moved swiftly towards the other side to enter the car and locked the doors.
Cassie faced him. "What do...." whatever she has to say was left hanging in the air as James' mouth met hers, giving her a mind-blowing kiss. Her mind is telling her to stop this insanity but her body seems to be detached from everything except James' touch.
It's more than what she has imagined.
Oh yeah! She has been imagining this. Even helplessly hoping it to happen.
Since they first met, he has been visiting her in her dreams. Waking her up in the middle of the night fully aroused.
Now, it's really happening and there's no turning back.
She found her arms reached to James neck to pull him closer and urging him not to break the kiss. He responded with a moan which intensified her need for him.
Her hands lowered to his chest as she started loosening his tie and unbuttoning his shirt. He suddenly removed her hands and broke the kiss.
She protested while trying to even her breaths.
He chuckled in labored breaths as he said "I know, querida. but not here."
He stared at her before starting the engine.
He wanted her as much as she wanted him. Cassie bit her lip to let out a moan once again.
"Don't do that. I need to focus on driving." he said teasingly but his voice thick with suppressed need.
Cassie couldn't remember how long it took them to reach James' unit. But as soon as the door of his hotel room came to a close, they were both oblivious to everything else.
They both started stripping each other's clothes. James unzipped her dress and in no time the dress dropped on the floor while he is hungrily kissing her. She responded to his kisses with the same intensity while hastily undoing his shirt. Shrugging off both his suit jacket and shirt, she proceed to unbuckling his belt letting his pants drop to the floor. He kicked his shoes off together with his pants. As soon as they were both free from the offending garments, he straddled her and carried her to his room. He laid her down on his bed carefully without breaking the kiss.
His kisses traveled down to her neck and she felt drugged by the sensation he was giving her. She let out a moan of satisfaction as his kisses moved even lower and lower. Her pants came more rapidly as he spread her leg to give her a kiss down to her wet center. His tongue played with her sensitive little lump.
She couldn't contain it anymore. She needed him inside her. "Please..." she heard herself plead.
"Say it, querida. What do you need?" he urged as he continued to tease her sensitive spot.
"I need you inside me. Now! Please!" she begged. James didn't need to be told twice. And with a swift motion, he was on top of her. His erection angled perfectly and ready to enter her. "James" and with that he thrust himself inside her giving both of them the pleasure that they've been waiting for. His thrusts become deeper and faster until he reached his climax just a little after hers.
That's how it all begun.
Cassie never expected that night to be repeated but it did.
She was undeniably wrapped up with all her school work and application for residency. But she managed to do all her responsibilities including her part-time jobs. And finally tomorrow is the day when she reaps what she sows. It's her graduation.
Having James never seemed to have affected her routine except when he is being stubborn if she declines to see him.
She doesn't exactly know what to call it. Relationship? She isn't sure. But it's been two months since the fundraiser. They haven't even spoken about his speculation of her being a prostitute.
Now that Cassie thinks about it, there's not much talking between them whenever they see each other. There are more important things than talking. She can't help but smile thinking about how he makes her feel. Getting laid almost everyday isn't so bad.
"You're such a bitchy girl, Cassandra" she muttered to herself as she enters the building. Her feelings for James have grown stronger since they met. "I think you have to tell him. Today. Before you chicken out" she continued. She's going to tell him. She wants her to be there in her graduation.
It's one of those days when James becomes extremely stubborn. So she has decided to come and see him and tell him everything. She can't contain her excitement. He would be surprised.
She took the elevator up to his unit. She is now too familiar with the place having been here countless times in two months.
Using her own key, she opened the door and entered the unit. She found James in his usual spot near the glass window overlooking the Guadalajara night view.
Her heart skipped a bit by just seeing his back. She actually does every time she sees him.
"Hey! It's a very nice evening, isn't it?" she said enthusiastically, trying to hide her nervousness to what she is going to reveal to him.
"Yes, it is" he responded. A little too tersely.
"I have something to tell you." she said exhaling deeply.
"Yeah? Do you now?" he said turning to look at her, his stare was cold and dangerous.
"James, is everything alright?" she said, not able to prevent herself from panicking.
"You are still seeing Professor Acosta." he stated rather accusingly.
"Of course. I am his..." she started.
"I know what you are. You're a whore." he shouted
Cassie knew what James thought of her. But she couldn't believe he still thinks that way. They've been together for two months.
She didn't notice she was crying until she heard his voice again.
"I don't need your tears. Here, take this. It's two months worth of payment for your services." he said not meeting her eyes.
"So you think those two months we've been together is just a service?" Her voice shaky and pained, tears still falling down her cheeks. "Then, why can't you look at me straight in the eye?" she prodded.
He slowly look up at him. His eyes blank with any emotion "It is. Even from the very beginning, I told you I'll pay double or triple."
Cassie was unable to say anything. How could I be so stupid? she thought to herself. She made herself believe he cared for her, she even let herself fall in love with him. How could I forget how this all began?
"Take the money and leave the key on the counter" he said firmly before leaving her. She pulled herself together.
She left without taking even a slight glance at the envelope lying on the table. She quickly placed the key on the counter and left the unit as fast as her stride would let her.
She was out in the warm evening air but even that didn't soothe her. She doesn't know where she is going but she just kept walking.
Her slowed her pace when she felt lightheaded. Everything around her seemed to be spinning around. "Señorita, ¿estás bien?" was all she could hear before darkness overwhelmed her.
Cassie awoke in a familiar smell of disinfectant. She opened her eyes and saw Professor Acosta smiling at her.
"Profesor? Where am I? Why are you here?" she asked successively.
"Well, first, you're at a clinic. Second, I was called in because they couldn't get hold of your aunt since last night." he answered her questions patiently. "You missed your graduation and I was worried so when I received the call, I immediately came here."
"Thank you so much for being here. I don't know what really happened.' She said trying to get up.
At that moment, the doctor came in.
"I see that you're awake. How are you feeling?" she asked.
"Perfect" she replied.
"Well, I have an even better news for you." the doctor said smiling. "Congratulations! You're going to have a baby. You're four weeks pregnant."
Cassie felt her blood drained from her face.
"Help! Please help my wife" a panicky voice brought her back to her senses.
She looked at the man standing behind James. James seemed to be staring at her.
"Are you alright?" James asked her.
"Yes, I'm fine. What just happened?" she asked.
"Please, anybody. Help my wife!" the man standing just a few seats behind James said again.
The man is now anxiously looking at his wife on one of the seats
"I'll go check what the man needs." she said to James.
He nodded.
Cassie approached the man "Sir, what's wrong?"
As soon as Cassie was near enough "My wife's water just broke. She's having the baby." the man said in panic. "We were heading to Montgomery but i don't know what happened to the train" he continued. Cassie looked at the wife.
"What's your name?" she asked the woman. She is certainly trying to control her breaths.
"Alicia" she said.
"OK, Alicia. I'm Dr. Miller from Montgomery. You're doing great. But I have to check if you're fully dilated so we can decide what to do next. OK?" Cassie said. Alicia nodded
James came back. "No one seems to be hurt but the train conductor said it might take a while before the can fix the problem."
"OK! Well, help me put her in a lying position to check her cervical dilation and effacement."
Cassie with the help of Alicia's husband brought her into a lying position. She quickly searched her bag for her latex gloves.
James is looking at her, amazed.
"Don't ask" she said before proceeding to slide her middle and and index finger through her vagina.
She looked at James before turning to look at Alicia.
"Is everything alright?" she asked, anxiously. Her contraction seemed to have intensified.
"Alicia, you are fully dilated and effaced. We need to deliver your baby, now." she informed them. Worry registered in her face. "Hey, you're doing fine." she told her straight in the eye.
"Sir?" she then faced Alicia's husband.
"Chris" he said.
"Chris, I need some clean cloths." she said before turning to look at James. "In my bag, get my bandage scissors and sanitizer." He obeyed without any question.
"Alicia, look at me. Let's do this together. Ok?"
She nodded. "OK. 1...2...3 push!" Alicia did and Cassie can feel her baby's head. "One more. 1...2...3 push!" and with that Cassie cup the baby's head with her hands and support it as it comes out. She stared at the baby in her hands while it's loudly crying, a sign indicating he is healthy. "It's a boy!" she announced.
She could have felt this with her own baby.
"My baby" Alicia's voice brought her back to her reality. She proceeded to cleaning her up and placing Alicia's baby in her abdomen.
"Oh Shit!" she snapped
"Is everything alright?" James was looking at her anxiously.
"clamp" with one word James understood what she meant. For a few moments, he didn't say anything. Like her, he is trying to think quickly. "hair clip" he finally said.
"What?' confusion all over her face. James' eyes darted on her hair. "Oh! Ooh!" she finally got what he meant. "yes, right. take it." it took no time for him to remove her hair clip. Clamped it to the umbilical cord before cutting it.
*****
Cassie was standing in the viewing are of the nursery looking at the babies peacefully sleeping. It took her a year to fully recover from the depression she suffered upon losing her child.
When she discovered she was carrying James' child, she had a moments thought of going back to his unit and tell him.
But she immediately came to her senses.
He made it clear what he thought of her. He slapped it to her face.
"You don't have to leave" Professor Acosta said. Her aunt has arrived a few hours ago after the doctor dropped the bomb on her. She has told them that she will leave to Chicago.
"I have to. With tía's new information about my father, I have to pursue finding him." she said firmly.
"But darling, we're not even sure if he's still in the same place." she aunt is her only family and she has been trying to reach out people to get some information about her father. After all, she was the one who introduced him to her mother back then.
"It's worth a try" she said. It is the reason she wants to leave but for the most part, she just wants to get away.
Chicago, it is
"Paging Dr. Miller, please proceed to treatment 3, please!" Cassie immediately left the nursery and proceeded to the ER. She met Brian as she heads to treatment 3. He looked at her worried.
"Dr Wallace" he said.
She nodded. Worry overwhelmed her as she entered treatment 3.
"Here she is." Dr. Wallace's gleeful voice greeted her. She looked at him confused. Then looked at James who is obviously been attending to him.
"What happened? You had me worried!" she she with a mix of relief and anger.
"Hey! It's my job to worry about my patient. Not the other way around." he said still with that joyful tone.
"Well, today you are the patient. Not me."
"Wait. You are Dr. Wallace's patient? But I thought he's a psychiatrist?"
She ignored his questions.
"What's his condition?"
"I'm fine. Everything is fine."
"I'm sorry but it not" James said firmly
"Go on. What is it?" she urged him to continue.
James looked at Dr Wallace before looking at her.
"He needs a another Coronary Artery Bypass surgery."
"Are you sure you can fix him?"
After significant effort to convince Dr Wallace, he agreed to carry on with the surgery. The surgery was performed by James along with the best cardiologist they have.
Cassie couldn't stand waiting so she left and went to the chapel of the hospital. Praying like she never prayed before for the surgery to succeed.
"I wonder where you went." James said as he sat beside her.
" How is he?" she asked
"He is fine. The surgery was successful." he stated.
"Thank you"
They sat there for a while before James broke the silence.
"Dr Wallace seems to be special to you" he said
She stared at him. "He is. But not the way you think it is."
"I know." he said "I am just wondering how you became his patient."
She let out a deep sigh.
"I suffered from depression when I came here. With Dr Wallace and some friends' help, I managed to get on with life and start new." she Told him leaving that piece of information that involved him.
"Is this after you miscarried our baby?" Cassie stared at him completely taken aback.
How did he find out?
