Chapter 9
“This is it. Let’s go.” We set off, Katniss armed with bow and quiver, Gale with some knifes. Delly and Peeta are armed with decidedly less deadly cakes, water, bread and cheese.
We approach the fence and I reach over to squeeze Tobias’s hand.
Delly has a similar reaction and Gale helps her up. Katniss is over easily and Peeta manages to climb over neatly despite his leg. I start to climb but a metre or so up I stop and look down. I take one hand off the fence, confident I’ll be safe as I’m not as at all high. I reach the hand out to Tobias. He takes it gratefully and when he is level with me I let his hand go. This time we are back on the ground without me slipping, though Tobias still puts an arm around my waist anyway. I lean into him happily and we lead the way through the woods.
Our pace is certainly slower now we have 4 other people with us. The group is oddly quiet and as darkness falls Gale breaks the silence.
“Shall we sleep?” He asks and I suddenly realise how exhausted I am. We find a tree that bends right over creating a basic roof. We lay down; Tobias curled up to me so close I can feel his steady breath on my neck, his heartbeat. Gradually I hear most people’s breathing slow and it gets cold. I shiver and huddle even closer to Tobias who puts his arm around me.
“Are we doing the right thing?” I ask, voicing the question the question that I’ve been wanting to ask since, well, since we decided to leave Dauntless.
“About helping them?” Tobias asks and I nod. It seems a good starting place. “We are saving lives Tris. Of course we are doing the right thing!” He says
I breath out, relieved and my breath comes out in a white puff in the cold air. Tobias must see this as he kisses me and hugs me against him in the freezing darkness.
