✧ Chapter 65 ✧
[ The Pain That I Never End ]

[ Kokichi's PoV ]

I stepped into the factory, looking up at the machine. It was a menacing looking object, towering to the ceiling with its pipes and glass chambers.

Circled around its base was a warning, a shade of maroon and practically written in block letters as 'DANGER', though it didn't discourage me from moving towards it.

The whole atmosphere seemed to have a tense kind of feeling; as if the place were bracing itself or holding its breath.

Behind me, were two people tagging along, talking to each other as if they were at a party. Or maybe because they didn't seem to take this seriously.

The taller of the two had a head of bright green hair, though he had a simple black hoodie covering most of it prevent it from being too obvious. He did look strange without his usual hat, but he managed to sling his goggles around his neck along with a simple blue scarf. Two gold badges decorated the cloth, a smiley face and a frowny one; like opera masks.

Donned with the black hoodie of the Remnants of Love and a simple pair of black jeans, he could pass off as a shadow ninja or something. That is, if ninjas had bright green hair (which defeats the purpose of sneaking around anyway).

His eyes matched the colour of his hair, which made me realise he looked slightly like Rantaro, but Teruya Ōtori acted nothing like the adventurer. The merchant was annoying sometimes and a little mistrustful, but I needed his help for several reasons..

"Hey, grape boy," Teruya exclaimed a little too loudly, as if realising that we were just standing in silence, "What do you need us to do again?"

"Jeez idiot.." the third person of our trio spoke up with a huff, adjusting the brim of his hat. "Weren't you listening to Ouma? Or were you just rambling on about money again?"

"Excuse me-!"

"You are excused.." The journalist interrupted him, looking bored as if he wanted to be anywhere but here. "I only agreed to help because you two will get killed. The dumb, and the dumber."

I smirked, finding his 'insults' lame, "I think you forgot who you're talking to, Yomiuri. I'm the leader, so what I say, goes! Now shut up with your useless chatter and help."

Nikei Yomiuri was a piece of work.. though I admit, he was good at attack more than defence. After all, he used to be the leader amongst his own group in the Monokuma Traitors and was skilled with a gun. But please. He wasn't as scary as some people portrayed him as.

The journalist had dark black hair which covered his left eye and pale skin. He had a defiant frown on his face and light lavender eyes. He was dressed the same way as Teruya, black shirt, jeans, shoes... but Nikei had stubbornly worn his old Monokuma Traitors hoodie around his waist.

The two teenagers complemented each other the way some colours would, though it can be a headache to listen them talk over one another. After all, their common trait was being talkative, which I found annoying.

Once again, I regretted letting them accompany me for this trip, but I had no other choice.. they had been taking a stroll— though it seemed like they were having a heated discussion —while on their way to a cafe. And I had unfortunately run into them when I left my empty house; with a plan in mind.

I decided to answer Teruya's question, just for the sake of reminding them in case they got distracted once more. "I just wanna test out my theory. This might change things for the future.. now find the power button or something-."

"Found it!" Nikei exclaimed as the machine standing before us hummed to life, steam pouring from the side. While I had been busy explaining, he had wandered off..

"Nice going, journal boy," the merchant smirked, his voice still echoing throughout the room. "Should've known you'd be good for something."

"Oh shut up.. I have an eye for detail. You're jealous you just dilly dally throughout your entire life by selling junk."

"Rude!"

"Enough you two.." I muttered, their arguing giving me a continuous, pounding headache. "Let's just get on with it. Do you have everything?"

"Teruya here has all the junk you need," Nikei snickered, gesturing to the green haired teenager who shot him a annoyed look. "Ask him."

"Just because the Monokuma Traitors are 'redeemed'," the merchant sighed, unslinging his drawstring bag and placing it on the floor, "Doesn't mean you can act like you own the place, Yomiuri.."

"This can make for a great scoop though.." the latter replied, as though he had not heard him. He then took out a notebook and scribbled a few sentences down, his pen scratching against the paper in a hurry.

"You do know that even if you write an article today, we're never going to remember from tomorrow onwards?"

"Oh shut up, Otori."

"But I'm right."

I turned my attention to the machine before us as Teruya took several objects out from his bag; a hairpin, a pair of green tinted glasses and a few other items which could be considered as miscellaneous.

However, these items were anything but miscellaneous.. it was going to change everything if I planned this correctly. "Hey Yomiuri.." I didn't turn my gaze away from the menacing looking machine, "Are you sure we're in the correct-."

"Positive. Affirmative. Correct." He interrupted me once more, also not looking up from his work. "This is the place. I gathered enough information in that thirteen minutes you gave me."

A slight vibration came from my pocket, realising that I had a incoming phone call from my boyfriend..

"Ooh." Teruya looked over my shoulder at the phone, "Is your boyfriend calling? I wish my boyfriend could call me."

"I'm right here. Why do I need to call you?" Nikei grumbled before realising what he said as the merchant looked mortified. The two then started 'arguing' again, trying to cover up their blunder.

Sighing at them, I answered the call, turning away from the other two friends of mine.

"Hey Saihara-chan.." I smiled to myself as soon as I heard the quiet voice on the other end.

"Hey Ouma-kun.. it's nearly twelve." the boy whispered in my ear, making me look up at the glass windows. The pale moon shone in, shining down upon me..

"Yeah.. let's hope everything goes back to normal, huh?" I replied, twirling a strand of my hair, "Maybe we can cheat the system and like, I dunno, put up a piece of paper to remind each other of who we were."

There was a small chuckle on the other end, though it sounded shaky, "No, we talked this through didn't we? We want a clean slate.. no interference."

I leaned against a metal beam, putting my weight against it, "Tell that to Past Ouma.. he cheated and gave me that book to try to remind me of you, remember?"

"Only because it was necessary."

There was a silence as I closed my eyes. Shuichi didn't know what I was planning...

The Removal Serum was going to erase everything.. every friend everyone has ever made, every shred of memory. It was like starting a whole new life with the names of your family, and yourself. A dawn of a new day.

I was going to risk it.. and believe in the power of soulmates.

If Shuichi and I were truly meant to be together.. I swore to find him in my next life.

"- Ouma?"

Shuichi's voice startled me slightly, hearing the concern in his voice. "Yeah? Sorry, I'm listening!" I lied, feeling the corners of my mouth turn up.

"Liar.." Shuichi obviously caught it, thanks to my enthusiastic response, "What did I just say then? If you were listening, you would know."

"Oh, ya know.. I heard you say 'I love you'."

Shuichi laughed, his laughter always sounded beautiful to me.. it was gentle, feminine sounding even, but what he didn't know, it always brought a bit of happiness to me.

"I didn't say that, but I will now. I love you, Ouma."

"Hey Ouma!" Teruya's voice rang out as the lights turned on, blinding me slightly. "I've got everything you need and accounted for. But I think we might've been tipped off-."

His words were cut off by a loud blare of an alarm, followed by people shouting and thunderous footsteps. I cursed under my breath as I realised that Shuichi was speaking.

"Ouma-? What's going on? Where are you?"

A bullet ricocheted off the metal beam above, making me instinctively dodge the incoming fire.

"I'll be fine," I replied shortly, taking out a gun and checking for bullets. Damnit.. only enough to take three people down. "Don't worry about me."

"Of course I'll worry about you! Where are you? I thought you said you're staying at home!" he sounded panicked.

"Looks like it's just one of my many lies." I muttered guiltily, making sure he couldn't hear me. I needed to get to the machine so I could finish my plan..

"See you in my other life, Saihara-chan." I said into my phone, feeling my stomach flip as Shuichi demanded to know what was going on.

"Kokichi- don't you dare to hang up on me-!"

I ended the call, shoving the phone back into my pocket.

"Ouma! Where are you? Seriously, this is bad for my heart and health!" Teruya's voice rang out. Why didn't I bring other people along? That merchant was only good for running his mouth and carrying all those items..

I looked up to see Nikei and Teryua on the metal catwalks, shooting men down with a gun in the journalist's hand. They had somehow made their way up, maybe to stop the most of the guards from making their way over to where I was. At least they were a good distraction as long as they didn't get hurt.

"Ouma! Here!" Teruya called, tossing a sack down towards me, and I leapt forward, catching it. Thankfully, they were just small items..

I made my way towards the machine in front, dodging the bullets which missed me by inches. Reaching into the bag, I pulled out the familiar gold hairpin and fed it to the machine, my fingers pressing the control panel. Strings of blue light emitted from where I touched..

But.. I didn't know how to use this.. every word on screen looked strange and foreign to me. Replications? Codes? Vortexes? What are those?

I felt heat starting to burn in my eyes, making me blink. Keebo.. would know what to do. But this wasn't the time to cry, you idiot! I scolded myself, flipping though the program and trying to analyse each word.

Frowning at the controls, I turned a knob and pulled a lever, hoping I was doing this right.

"Ouma!" Nikei's voice yelled out, making me spin around to see one of the guards pointing the barrel of a gun straight towards me.

I didn't have time to move-.

The loud bang of the gun resonated in the room, making me tense and brace myself for the pain.

However, a dark shape had leapt in front of me, the person's knife angled in such a way that the bullet deflected off the blade. I stared at my saviour; obviously shocked.

"Just do what you have to do," Kaito told me, pulling out a gun as well and boldly firing at more guards, "I'll distract them."

"How did you know I was here?" I demanded as Kaito fixed me with one lilac and blue eye. His usual eye colour and the Regain serum's..

"Talk later, revive them now."

His attitude reminded me of Maki's, making me frown and turn back to the console. Behind me, I could hear Nikei, Teruya and Kaito fighting against the guards, their gunfire distracting me..

Holding the piece of paper in my hand, I narrowed my eyes to read Keebo's intelligible handwriting. Hmph. Just like a doctor, his words seemed to be meaningless scribbles.

In my pocket, my alarm rang sounded, signalling that I had about an hour to complete my task. Stupid iPhone alarms, I hated their annoying little ringtones..

Reaching for the control panel once more, I turned a knob from 'Clone' to 'Create'. Almost instantly, the whole room blazed with a darker shade of blue light, giving an ocean kind of atmosphere. Why is it always blue.. I wondered.

This was for Shuichi.. he had to have a normal life again. All of us did. Narrowing my eyes slightly, I pressed a button to input a name as stated by Keebo's notes.

I entered the first name which came to my mind and hit the red button, watching the bar increase from 0% to 100% excruciatingly slowly.

God.. how long was this going to take?

"Ow-!" a shout and a sudden thud made me spin around to see Teruya lying on the catwalk, clutching his arm as blood trickled down.

"Damnit palm tree, I told you not to get into my line of fire!" Nikei's urgent yet concerned voice scolded him as the merchant tried to argue.

"It's not my fault you're a bad bodyguard!" he shot back, pulling a roll of bandage from his bag as Nikei grumbled something I probably shouldn't put in this book.

"Ouma, get ready!" Kaito called as a door burst open to reveal more guards running in.

"Seriously, are they ordering guards in bulk?" I demanded, holding my pistol up and accidentally hitting a metal beam with my bullet. What a lousy shot, but I was never one with violence.

"Shoot now! Talk later!" the fighter in front of me reminded, taking two guards down with a shot to the legs.

I turned my attention back to the control panel: 86%.

"Damnit," I told Kaito, who was mercilessly shooting another guard in the head, his multi coloured eyed flickering from blue to purple every now and then. "The process takes ages just to complete."

"Should've done this sooner." The astronaut muttered, narrowing his eyes and recoiling due to the gun. My ears rang as he kept shooting the guards down. I started to ask him a question, despite the situation.

"Since when did you learn how to-."

The machine beeped loudly, and I saw the numbers: 100%.

On the side of the machine, a chamber opened, and a person face planted to the ground with a loud thump. "Uh.." I looked at Kaito, who had turned to the sound with a frown, "Was that supposed to happen?"

My question only made him give me a stink eye, before turning his attention to the last of the remaining guards.

Trusting Kaito to handle them, I bounded over to the figure and carefully held her up. She was still unconscious, just as I figured.. but at least she was alive.

I heaved a sigh of relief before leaning the girl against the side of the machine; realising that the same clip Teruya gave to me was now holding her fringe back.

"Stay here." I told the unconscious body, as though she would move anywhere, and got to work; now excited to get on with my plan. It worked perfectly! Thanks to Keebo's notes..

I gave the papers a small smile, as if the scientist existed in the notes.. I had discovered them when I was clearing out our dorm room at Hope's Peak.

The whole place was just as we left it before we went to save Shuichi at the Hospital.. clean and orderly. Just as the scientist had packed. But of course, the only thing missing in the room was him..

After Junko's final death within the Neo World Program, everything seemed to be back to normal..

Monokuma and Monomi had been taken apart by Usami, Shirokuma and the reconstructed Monophanie. The other Monokubs had fled, and were now somewhere out of Dangan Island.

The rest of the bears (or bunnies) were left in the trash heap, and never to be heard from again. (Hopefully, as Komaeda told me. Empathise on the word 'hope' since that appeared to be his favourite word; as it was Hinata's talent.)

However, as I went through each name.. one person caught my attention.

I couldn't bring him back, no matter how much I tried. Strange.. but I didn't have time to dwell on that problem for now.

I had to do this.. to get the future everyone wanted.
