Chapter 7
PICTURE OF BETH ON THE RIGHT >>>>>
MELODY POV
I could barely focus on the task at hand because of this new update. I know for a fact that as soon as I tell Trevor I'm in the city he will tell Jake. They're best friends, of course he will tell him! I sigh and push away from my desk. I was able to narrow down the search from 15 to 3 competing decor companies to cater to Trevor's needs but I can't do anymore. Maybe a walk is what I need.
Choosing to clear my mind for a few minutes I head to Layla's desk to see her twirling her hair and biting her lip... which means she's talking to Aiden.
"Baby! You can't say those kinds of things while I'm at work! Especially if we can't do anything about it." She looks around and spots me at the edge of her desk. "Melody is here do you wanna say hi?" I shake my head no and motion to go for a walk. She nods her head yes and hands me the phone. I sigh really loudly I take the phone from her.
"Hey Aiden." He laughs.
"Let me guess you don't really want to talk to me but Layla forced me on you?"
"How did you guess?" We both laugh and I sit back on Lay's desk. "So what's up with you Aiden?"
"Not much. I'm having an early lunch before I head into an important meeting so I thought I should call Lay now before she embarrassed me at work."
"Yeah she has the tendency to do that doesn't she?" He laughs again and I can hear him unwrapping something.
"Actually I've been meaning to talk to you."
"Oh yeah? What's up?"
"Alright... well first things first I'm going to need you to school your facial expressions." I catch my breath because I know what he's about to say is important.
"Ok..."
"Ok... well... I think I'm going to ask Lay to marry me." My first thought is to jump around and congratulate her but now I realize just why he wanted me to school my expressions. I take a deep breath and smile softly.
"Wow that is a big step for your copmany Aiden."
"Do you think it's too soon?"
"No it's never too soon for a promotion. Everyone needs a promotion."
"Great. Then I'm going to need to steal you sometime next week so we can go ring shopping. I know you will know what's best for her." I smile wide and hold in the excitement.
"No problem Aiden I'd be glad to help."
"Thanks so much Melody. I'll talk to you later."
"Bye Aiden." I hand Layla back the phone and she takes it with a huge smile on her face.
"You're getting a promotion baby?" I can't help laughing this time as I know Aiden is most likely trying to calm her down.
"Alright love I will see you for lunch tomorrow right? Ok bye." She hangs up and smiles at me. "Alright so what's your problem now?"
"I have to go to New York with Miranda." She raises an eyebrow and cracks her knuckles, another habit we sadly share.
"So?"
"So Trevor is in New York." She is still looking at me with confusion and I groan. "And where Trevor is Jake isn't too far behind!" Her mouth makes the shape of an "O" and she nods her head.
"Oh... well then don't go." I look at her astonished.
"I have to go! This is the first time I will be working side by side with Miranda. I can't just turn it down because I may or may not see Jacob." She begins to smile at me and I place my hands on my hips. "What?"
"You've just solved your problem." I frown and retrace what I just said before I roll my eyes.
"Fine fine. That was a good one." She gets up and grabs her purse.
"I know. Just admit I'm the master." I link my arm in hers and we walk to the elevator.
"You're not getting that out of me." She laughs and presses the lower floor button.
As we wait for the elevator I begin to think about Layla getting married. I know I wouldn't be the maid of honour because her sister would kill her if she chose me over her, but I am fine with being in the wedding party. Lay would most likely want a destination wedding in Bali, while Aiden will want something quiet near Niagara on the Lake. Both will fuss and bother over the simplest things but in the end... those two were made for each other. Feelings of excitement and remorse begin to consume me. Of course I am excited for Layla and Aiden, it is a huge step to get married. But then again what about me? If they get married then I will have to find another place. Unless Aiden moves in with us. Either way it will be awkward. Of course Dean would be my plus one... but can I see myself getting married to him? Is he the one? I can't lie to myself and say that I haven't thought about getting married to Jake. I love his family; his mother's caring yet fiercely protective attitude and his father's rough yet respectful manner and of course Trevor because they are practically brothers. I remember there were nights that we would be in each others arms and we would just talk and talk about our future. We talked about where we would live, how many kids we would have, whether we would have one or two dogs. Then we would talk about our jobs and balancing life between two countries... I swear we had it all sorted out...
"Mel are you coming?" I look up to see Layla standing in the elevator.
"Sorry about that." I get in and roll my neck, but then my head snaps up.
"Nothing happened..."
"What did you say hun?" I look over to Layla and tears slowly fill my eyes.
"Nothing happened."
"What do you mean." I wipe at my eyes and smile.
"I mean I was able to think about Jake and our past without the heartache, without the episode. I was able to freely think about him and nothing happened!" I try not to jump up and down since we are in an elevator but I am bouncing a bit.
"So what does that mean then?" I pause and look over to her again. I can feel my pout sufacing because the truth is I don't know what this means.
"I don't know. This has never happened before." Lay shrugs her shoulders and the elevator dings open.
"Maybe it means you're finally over him." I smile at the comment and feel accomplished. "Or it could mean your feelings for him are resurfacing. It all depends on what you were thinking about." She looks over to me and I don't answer. If I tell her what I was thinking then she will know about the proposal, but that's not what I'm worried about. I was thinking about marriage and a happy life with Jake and if I tell her that then she will guess I do care about him again... and I don't.
"It doesn't matter. It was one time. Let's just grab some Booster Juice or something. I need to get my mind off of New York for a bit." She smiles softly and starts walking towards our destination.
"You know it's not a bad thing if you have feelings for him again." I roll my eyes and don't respond. He ruined my summer. He's an asshole and a pompus jerk.
"And I know what you're thinking, he ruined my summer, he's an asshole, he's a jerk blah blah blah, but think about this. If you didn't find out about what he did, if you continued on as if nothing happened, how happy would you be right now?" I look at her through narrowed eyes.
"How many times do I have to say I am happy!" Layla grabs my arm and stops me from walking.
"I never said you weren't happy Melody so stop getting so defensive. All I'm saying is I've seen those days at school when you looked like someone had ripped out your heart. I was with you when you couldn't stop crying. I helped you to get through the pain of heartbreak. I was also right beside you when you had another attack during work when you first heard from Trevor. I don't know Jacob and I'm sure if I ever met him I would make sure he remembered me, but maybe he did what he did for a good reason." I blink repeatedly in shock and take a step away from her.
"For a good reason Layla? What good came from-"
"Didn't you say there was a woman working with you at that club and she lost her job too?"
"Yes he made her lose her job!"
"Yes but didn't you also say that she said she hated her job because she was underpaid and 7 months later she was hired at an even better hotel in Puerto Rico? And this hotel was not only closer to her home but she also met the love of her life working there. In which she was then promoted to the head of her department?" I shut my mouth and pout.
"That's besides the point." This time she narrows her eyes and crosses her arms.
"No it isn't and you know that. You can't keep holding on to the past to keep this grudge going. Even though what he did was wrong it had good intentions and in a way everyone was happy including you. Stop playing the victim Mel... it's getting a little petty." She continues walking ahead of me and my mouth falls open. WHAT. THE. HELL! That is exactly what Trevor said! I am not playing the victim! I am the one who was hurt! I am the one who had the heartache! I am the one who still hasn't gotten over it!
"Are you just going to stand there or are you coming?" Layla turns to me and starts walking backwards to get my attention. "Oh and close your mouth! You don't want to catch flies!" She winks and turns back around. I feel my feet moving towards her but my mind is still a mess. I don't understand why everyone belives its necessary to get caught up in my business. And I also don't know why Jacob just decides to make a sudden appearance in my life now after all these years. Who does he think he is? Well I mean technically he hasn't actually showed up but he won't leave my mind... and that's all his fault. We get to Booster Juice and order our smoothies. Instead of going back to work we walk the streets instead.
"I didn't mean to sound rude Mel." I look over to Lay and smile.
"I know you didn't. And if it helps... you're kinda right."
"Great so are you going to see him?"
"Whoa whoa! I just said you're right not that everything is forgiven. I may not completely hate Jacob now but I don't think we could ever be friends again."
"Why not?"
"Because I love Dean and I couldn't do that to him." We pass by a park bench and take a seat.
"I don't understand."
"Let me put it this way, Jake and Dean are kind of similar. Both are possessive and domineering. Both can be rude and offensive from time to time and both are the most loving, caring and respectful boyfriends I've ever had. Can you imagine going through a rough break up with one of those and then trying to be friends again?" I pause for effect and she wrinkles her nose. "Exactly it could never happen. I'm pretty sure if I ever saw Jake again he would lock me away in his room and keep me there until I fell back in love with him. And vice versa with Dean. If he knew I was slowly forgiving Jake I would be taken off Trevor's birthday planning and hidden away from the world till I hated Jake again." Layla nods her head with a big smile.
"You sure know how to pick em Mel." I laugh a little and enjoy the warmth of the sun on my face.
"Yeah. I guess I do." My phone buzzes and I get a message from Miranda.
10:32 a.m. Miranda - Um where are you Melody? Did you choose a company for decor? We need this settled now so we can visit their site tomorrow.
To Miranda: 10:32 a.m.- I apologize Miranda I needed some fresh air... problems I needed to sort out. Layla is with me and we are on our way back now. I have narrowed the selection down to three seperate companies. When I get in I will call each one of them and decide from there.
10:33 a.m. Miranda - That's what I like to hear. Get moving missy! :)
I stand up and stretch. Layla seems to be relaxing as well and I nudge her shoulder.
"Time to go already?" Her eyes are still closed as she says this.
"Yeah Miranda just messaged me. We need to get back to work." Lay sighs and gets up.
"Alright. Hey at least you can look forward to getting a message from your secret admirer at lunch." She elbows my side playfully and I smile.
"How did you know he was going to message me at lunch?" She shrugs her shoulders and sips her drink.
"Cam's a blabber mouth." We both laugh and head back to work.
When I get to my desk I have a message and I feel my mood lift instantly.
Unknown: How is work?
M. Peters: Couldn't wait for lunch?
Unknown: Would you like to cut this conversation short?
M. Peters: Sure... see ya.
I smirk and wait for his reply because I know he will get frustrated. And right on cue he responds.
Unknown: Very funny.
I don't respond and wait for him to get even more frustrated.
Unknown: I know you're still there.
I still don't respond.
Unknown: Answer me!
M. Peters: Aww what's wrong? Did you miss me that much?
Unknown: Well aren't you the comedian.
M. Peters: I know. I know :)
Unknown: You enjoy tormenting me don't you.
M. Peters: I get great pleasure from it.
Unknown: I'd like to give you great pleasure.
M. Peters: And what would you do to me?
Unknown: I would kiss you.
M. Peters: That's it?
Unknown: Everywhere. I would place slow sensual and hot kisses all over your body. I would take my time and treasure every part of you. And the areas where you are most sensitive I would take the time to lick and suck it just to get a rise out of you. I would make you pant and moan out my name over and over again. And then once I've gotten you all hot and bothered I would slide my thicklong member between your folds. And massage it slowly...
M. Peters: Whoa back down big boy.
Unknown: I can't you've unleashed the animal in me. ;)
M. Peters: I like how that sounds!
Unknown: I'd like to hear the sound of you screaming my name.
M. Peters: Haven't I done that enough? ;P
Unknown: There's no such thing as too much.
M. Peters: Alright we need to cool down before someone makes a mess.
Unknown: I'll clean you up if you want me too ;)
M. Peters: OH WOW! Someone's happy today!
Unknown: Of course I am, I'm talking to you aren't I?
M. Peters: Yeah I guess I have that affect on people.
Unknown: How is work?
M. Peters: Fine I guess. I actually have a lot to do so I do need to go.
Unknown: That's fine.
M. Peters: Will you miss me?
Unknown: I always do.
M. Peters: Bye love.
Unknown: Till lunch beautiful.
I close my email and get to work with pure happiness driving me.

"Can we please have all passengers boarding first class? All passengers boarding first class to New York City?" Miranda and I get in line for the plane. I feel excited and scared at the same time. If- no when I see Jake I don't know how I'm going to react. It's all so nerve-racking. I wonder if he even cares anymore. I mean Trevor made a big deal of telling me that Jake was just as hurt as I was but is it the same now? I've already come to terms with the fact that I'm going to see him, I just haven't gauged his reaction yet. It's all very frustrating.
"So are you excited?" I look at Miranda and put on my best fake smile.
"Of course! This is an amazing opportunity and I am so grateful for the chance to work side by side with you." She bumps my shoulder and smiles.
"Oh come on Melody if it wasn't for you we would have never gotten this event! You've made me a very happy woman missy." We board the plane and find our seats. It's very spacious; with the reclining chairs and extra leg room. There is a curtain blocking us from the other passengers and a stewardess passing around drinks. We are sitting across from each other and I place my carry on in the overhead. When we sit down I finally continue the conversation.
"Well I would have never guessed that I would find Trevor again. It's jsut so weird to have him back in my life." Miranda smiles at me with a dreamy look in her eye.
"Yeah he is gorgeous isn't he?" I laugh and put on my seatbelt.
"Yeah he is something." The plane takes off a few minutes later and I try to get some rest. Telling Dean that I was going to New York was hard. I mean even my parents were ok with it, though they are touring Europe right now so I don't think they really care that much. But Dean... oh no he just had to blow up.
Flashback
"Melody I just don't feel comfortable with you going there." I had messaged Dean during my lunch break to let him know about the business trip to New York. Instead of responding through text he showed up at my office and took me to lunch.
"Dean I have to go. The only reason we got this gig is because of Trevor and my relationship." He runs a hand through his hair.
"Exactly! Don't you get it baby? He's drawing you in slowly. Pulling you back into his world." I take Dean's hand and rub it soothingly.
"Dean you're over-reacting. I know Trevor is just trying to keep me around and I don't mind that. I missed him and he missed me. We're like brother and sister! I want to go." He brings my hand to his lips and kisses it.
"Baby please just send someone else." I pull back my hand and narrow my eyes.
"Ok obviously you are not listening. I have to go! This is my job! And Miranda is my boss. I can't turn her down after she's already booked the flight. Stop freaking out over this. Nothing will happen."
"Oh so what about Worthington? They are best friends aren't they? I know Trevor is going to tell him that you're there." I roll my eyes and cross my arms.
"So what he will know I'm there. That doesn't mean I'm going to go running to him. I didn't tell you this so we could argue. I just wanted you to know." I get up and grab my purse. Dean jumps up with a panicked look in his eyes.
"Wait! Wait! Forget everything I said. I'm sorry. You're right I over-reacted. I just don't want to lose you." I walk out the door and head to his car. He unlocks it and I get in.
"Baby please talk to me." He takes my hand again and tries to turn me to face him.
"I want you to trust me Dean." He nods his head and strokes my cheek.
"I do trust you baby. I really do. I'm sorry." I take a deep breath and smile.
"Good. I will be back on Sunday." He smiles and starts the car.
"And I will be at the airport to pick you up." We kiss and he drives me back to work.
End of Flashback
"Melody sweetie, we've landed." I open my eyes to see Miranda hovering over me. I get up and fix my clothes.
"Did I really doze off?" I grab my carry on and begin to exit the plane.
"Yes you did but it's no big deal. Now we are going to head to the hotel first to drop off our things and get changed and then we will be having lunch with the Prince. After that we are heading to the venue to scope it out and then decor. Once that's done we will grab a bite for dinner, maybe get some drinks and call it a night. Sound fun?" I know she was being sarcastic but honestly I am excited. This is what I've been waiting for.
"It really does!" Miranda laughs and we head off the plane. We're staying at the Holiday Inn Express in the heart of Manhattan and our room is really nice. When we change into business casual we get a call from Trev's assistant saying he is on his way to the restaurant. With a smile and a notebook we leave to catch a cab.
When we arrive I can't help gasping at the sight. We're at Eleven Madison Park and this restaurant is very high class and very expensive. I have no clue how we're going to afford this place.
"Don't worry Mel I've got the bill covered" I jump and turn to see Trevor grinning at me. Immediately I jump into his arms and hug him close. "Whoa! I missed you too! Though it's only been two days." I pull back as he laughs and fixes his suit. He turns to Miranda and grins. "Ms. Tates it's a pleasure to finally meet you. Shall we?" He links his arm in mine and we walk into the restaurant. As soon as the hostess lays her eyes on Trevor her entire posture changes; she goes from slouching to an erect back, her eyes are wide and focused and her shirt somehow manages to drop 3 inches lower. Her eyes catch our linked arms and her upper lip twitches slightly.
"Mr. Daniels! It's so wonderful to have you again. Shall I take you to your usual seating?" Trevor laughs lightly and tightens his arm in mine.
"No thank you. I have reserved the private room for a meeting." She looks at her book and nods.
"Of course. This way." She leads the way purposely swaying her hips and Trevor leans into me.
"This girl hasn't ceased her flirting with me for months. At first it was cute but after Kace and I started to get serious it just became annoying. I think I may have to file a complaint." He laughs again and I laugh with him. I completely forget that Miranda is with us until we sit at the table. The way we are seated it would seem as though we were a couple.
"So Mr. Daniels we have narrowed down your venue selection to two different settings. We have the Capitale, which would create your lavish, high esteemed theme. Or we have the World Yacht, which can cater to your unique style and create a memorable event for a selection of 20 - 500 guests." Miranda sounds so professional as she says this and I admire her for it. Trevor looks over to me and frowns.
"What do you think Mel?" I look back at him and raise an eyebrow.
"Why are you asking me? I'm not your wife." He smiles and pinches my arm.
"Come on tell me what you think."
"Personally I think the World Yacht is the best bet. It suits your personality perfectly and narrows your guest list to a comfortable amount of people you would actually want to spend your time with." He nods his head.
"Yeah and I can still get everything I want right?"
"Yes you big baby you can get everything you want." He smiles.
"Perfect let's do the yacht idea. Yeah. I'm loving it more and more." Miranda winks at me and writes it down in her notepad.
"Alright now for the decor..." I sat back and listen as both Miranda and Trevor throw ideas at each other. It's amazing to see both in action, and as much as I want to focus on their conversation I can't stop thinking about Jake and whether or not he knows that I'm here. I had told Trevor yesterday that I was coming which means he had to have told Jake right after. I'm surprised he didn't just show up at the airport and demand that we talk. It's sad to admit but I was kinda hoping he would do something like that.
"Ok that sounds fine but I want the food to be perfect." I decide to join the conversation and add my input.
"Well there are four different yachts to choose from but I think it would be best to choose the Duchess. The yacht has a capacity of 500 and can cater to 425 for sit-down dining. But I know you want it be lively and full so I suggest a cocktail party. The capacity remains at 500 and allows room for your guests to roam the ship. They are well known for their festive cocktail parties and their food is delicious. We can set up a date for you to have a taste tester if you'd like." I write in my notebook to book the duchess immediately and inquire a taste tester. When I look up I see both Trevor and Miranda looking at me with shocked faces.
"What?" I put down my book and place some hair behind my ear. Trevor blinks a few times before he blows out a breath and responds.
"Wow Mel... that was amazing!" I smile at him and Miranda is smiling with me.
"Thanks it is my job." We all laugh and get back to work. By the time we have everything settled we have completely missed lunch.
"I must say I am thoroughly impressed with your company Ms. Tates. You are exceeding far beyond my expectations. I have no doubts that this party will be a success." Trevor shakes hands with Miranda and brings me in for a big hug. "We are having breakfast on Sunday." I nod in agreement and he leaves. Miranda and I spend the rest of the day shopping and haggling dealers to get all of Trevor's requirements. When nightfall hits I'm exhausted and starving.
"Hey how are you holding up?" Miranda looks like perfection as she eats her burger gracefully.
"I feel like sleeping for the rest of the weekend." She laughs and I smile.
"You did great today Melody. Really."
"Thanks. I'm really trying to keep up and learn as much as I can."
"Oh trust me there is still a lot to learn hun."
"And I don't doubt that at all. You were amazing out there. So much confidence and strength throughout the entire day. And all done in 4 inch heels! It was awesome to watch." Miranda smiles at me and sips her drink.
"Trust me it takes years of practice." We finish our food and head back to the hotel. The entire day my mind has been busy with Trevor's party plans but now that I am at peace all I can think about is Jake. And where the hell he is. I take a shower and have to force myself to stay awake. The warmth of the water against my skin and the steam filling the room relaxes me. I quickly scrub myself and wash off. But even as I brush my teeth I think about him. I wonder where he is and what he is doing. I wonder if he even knows I'm here. If he misses me and wants to see me as badly as I want to see him. I crawl into bed and hold myself tight. I hate that I'm feeling this way. I hate that I can't stop thinking about him. Miranda goes into the shower and I call Dean. It rings twice before it goes to voicemail. I call him again and this time it goes to voicemail immediately. I sigh and craddle my phone. It rings again and I answer it.
"Hello?"
"Hey MelBel! You miss me?" I feel tears well up in my eyes as I think about my best friend Tara.
"Tare is that really you?" I sniffle and she giggles.
"Of course it's me hun. What's wrong?" I check to see that Miranda is still showering before I spill my guts about the past week. When I stop tears are rolling down my cheeks.
"Aww Mel. That must be so much to deal with. If it makes you feel any better I will be coming to Toronto on Monday for about 3 weeks. I've got a big project to work on with one the buildings just opening. We can spend everyday together!" I smile and choke out a laugh at how good it feels to hear her voice.
"I'm really happy to hear that Tare. I miss you so much."
"I miss you too Mel! But I have a question."
"What's that?"
"Are you still in love with Jake?" I pause and wipe my eyes.
"No of course not."
"So why the big deal on whether or not you'll see him." I sigh and blow my nose.
"It's just... I pysched myself so I could be ready to see him, just for him to be an asshole and completely ignore me. It bothers me is all." Tare makes a "tsk tsk" sound.
"Uh huh. Whatever you say Mel. I think the time of Professor Sex is done." I roll my eyes.
"Dean isn't going anywhere."
"I didn't say he was."
"So what are you getting at?"
"I'm just saying why do all good things come to an end?"
"Are you quoting that Nelly Furtado song?" She laughs.
"Yes! But it also has a meaning to it hunny bun. Just think about it. And I mean earnestly think about it. Think about your past and your future. Think about your happiness and the bitterness you're still harboring. Everything that you want to ignore... think about it. Anyways I know it must be late there so I will let you go. I'll call you tomorrow ok love?"
"Thanks so much for calling Tare. I'll talk to you tomorrow." She hangs up and I fall asleep with a smile on my face.
Waking up to the smell of cinamon rolls I moan. My eyelids feel heavy but I push myself to open them anyway and I am greeted to the sight of a warm cinamon roll dancing above my nose. I smile and take it from Miranda.
"Hmm I figured food would be the trick to get you awake." I take a bite and moan again.
"You are one smart woman Miranda." I say with a mouthful of goodness. She smiles and sips her coffee. "So what's on the agenda for today?" Her eyes light up and she smiles.
"Today we are heading to World Yacht at Pier 81 to book the Duchess for Trevor and as is customary we will have a complimentary cruise to test out the site." She smiles widely and I grin.
"Sounds like fun!"
"Girl you have no idea! They wine and dine you to impress your socks off in hopes of getting your business. Their food is always delicious and their wine is to die for! Besides you can see all of the different cruise ships that dock there as well so that's quite the sight as well." We both laugh and eat our breakfast. When we're changed and ready to go I begin to think about Jake again. Miranda leaves before me so I sit on the bed and I try to call Dean again and thankfully this time he answers.
"Hey baby I just saw I missed your calls last night. Is everything ok?" He sounds like he's in a rush so I hold back my emotions and put on my brave face.
"Yeah everything is fine. I just missed you. Tara's going to be in town for a few weeks." A small smile creeps onto my face as I think about being with Tare again.
"That's great baby, you'll have someone to keep you company." The smile dies.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm sorry to say this now baby but I need to go to Paris for a family emergency."
"What? When did this come up?"
"Last night. It was the reason I couldn't answer your calls."
"Oh..." I bite my lip. "What happened?" He hesitates before he responds.
"It's nothing drastic baby I just need to be there." He clears his throat and I can hear his car start up.
"What about work?"
"I have that covered."
"And your place?"
"Yeah I was going to ask you if you could watch it for me? Water the plants maybe pay the bills if need be." I fall back onto the bed and sigh.
"Sure no problem."
"Thanks baby." I sigh again and in idea pops into head.
"Hey maybe I could come with you! I haven't met your family yet and who knows you may need me for moral support or something. And then we could tour and eat an-"
"No! No. None of that. You can't come Melody it's just family." I sit up and fist the blanket. He's never been so blatantly rude to me before, let alone push me away like that. My mind racks through reasons why he wouldn't want me there and infidelity won't stop surfacing.
"Melody? Are you still there?"
"Paris huh? When will you be back?" I can feel my bottom lip quivering.
"I don't know but I will make it back in time for your friend Trevor's party. I promise." I sigh. Since when did Dean become so popular?
"His party is almost a month away. Why do you have to be away for so long?" This time he sighs and I can hear him muttering under his breath.
"I really thought stating a family emergency would be enough for you. I don't know what else I can say." Well now he's just being an asshole.
"Fine. Whatever. I have to go."
"Mel wait! Just let me-" I hang up the phone and head to the lobby to meet with Miranda. Dean calls me four more times but I don't answer. I'm not mad at him because if I had a family emergency I would leave him too. But is it so hard to know a little more? He is my boyfriend not just some guy I sleep around with from time to time.
I'm mainly getting mad with myself for not feeling much longing. It actually doesn't bother me as much as it should that he's not going to be here. Its not like we are able to spend a lot of tome together anyway. But I know without a doubt though that with Dean gone I won't have a buffer from all that life is going to throw at me. He's my strength and my anchor and without him I'm worried something bad may happen.
Miranda is on the phone when I see her and she waves and points to the cab waiting for us. I get in and Miranda follows giving the cabbie the directions. While he's driving I decide to check my messages.
"Melody I didn't mean to upset you and I dont mean to be so secretive but its my family... I'm sorry. I know I'm not giving you enough attention and it's not fair to you. I promise I will make it up to you. And I didn't mean to snap at you either. Dan there's so much to apologize for. I love you so much baby. Please know that. I really hope you're having a fun time in New York and I will be there to pick you up on Sunday. I love you... I know I already said that but I really do. Bye." I replay the message once more before I save it.
To Dean: 10:47 a.m. - I didn't mean to hang up. My head is all over the place.
10:48 a.m. Dean - Don't apologize baby it's my fault. How are you?

To Dean: 10:51 a.m. - Here's a random question...Why don't you call me beautiful?
10:52 a.m. Dean - Because you're my baby ;) why?

10:53 a.m. Dean - I love you too baby. I hope you got my message. Have fun :) see you Sunday.
I place my phone back into my purse and look towards the pier. There's nothing special about the view but the Duchess looks gorgeous. And like Miranda said there are 4 other Norwegian Cruise Line ships all docked as well. We get out and meet up with one of World Yacht's reps.
"Hi there and welcome to Pier 81. My name is Cindy and I will be working with you on Mr. Daniels' birthday extravaganza." Her smile is wide and her bright blue eyes are shining. She flips her blonde hair over her shoulder and thrusts her hand out to shake.
"It's nice to meet you Cindy. My name is Miranda Tate and this is my associate Melody Peters." We both shake her hand and she leads us onto the yacht. There are a few other people on as well but it is large enough that we have a fair amount of distance between us. Cindy begins her speech on World Yacht Cruises and I enjoy the view of the city. The ship begins to move and Cindy becomes even more giddy. I tune her out as I take in the sites. A waiter comes over to us and hands us a cocktail drink and some shrimp. Miranda winks at me and sips her drink. We eat and cruise for almost an hour because Miranda wanted another "private" tour. When we get off we are a little tipsy and full of hor d'oeuvres.
"Alright missy. Now that that's been settled we have some time off since these people cater to almost every need. It's almost 12 now so you can head back to the hotel or tour around if you want. Doesn't matter to me. Just meet me at the hotel by 5 so we can go over the basis of the invitation lay out and send those out quickly. Trevor's assistant already sent me the guest list."
"I don't really know my way around the city." She smiles.
"Make the Prince take you around. I'm sure he won't mind." And if I go to his office he will tell Jake. I smile to myself and nod.
"I'll call him now." I dial his number and he answers immediately.
"Hey mel what's up?"
"You wanna give me a tour of NYC?" He laughs.
"I wish could, but I can't, I'm swamped. But I know who will be more than willingly to." I suck in a breath as I hear him handing the phone over to another person. I can hear a deep grumble of incoherent words and my heart races. The person takes the phone and I freeze.
"Melody?" The voice isn't what I expected. Instead of a deep masculine voice, it's a high pitched squeal. It takes me a second to recover from my absolute misery that it isn't Jake and I realize just who I'm talking to.
"Beth?"
"Oh My God! It is you! I can't believe it!" I laugh a little and smile.
"Hey Beth! Did you want to give me a tour of NYC?" I hear her squeal on the other line and I pull the phone away from my ear.
"ABSOLUTELY! Where are you I will pick you up!"
"I'm at Pier 81."
"I''l be there soon!" She hangs up and I smile. It will be nice to see Beth again. I completely forgot about her.
"So you have someone to be with?" I turn to Miranda and nod my head. "Good I will meet you back at the hotel for 5." She turns around and gets into a waiting cab. I wonder where she is off to. It takes Beth 30 minutes till she gets to me and she almost jumps out of the still moving car to get to me.
"Melody! It's been too long! I've missed you so much! How are you?" She runs into my arms and gives me a squeeze. I hug her back and laugh. She hasn't changed a bit, except for the designer clothes and the huge rock on her ring finger... wait a minute.
"Beth... you're engaged?" She pulls back and looks a little confused before she smiles and shows me the ring.
"Yes! To the man of my dreams no less! He is everything I've ever wanted and more! He is perfect! His name is Caine Marshall and he is an investment banker and a total stud! We're getting married in August! Oh and you are coming." She shoots me a look that dares me to question her but instead I nod my head in agreement.
"Of course I'm coming!" We both hop into her car and tour the city. She tells me all about her life since Anguilla and I eagerly listen trying my hardest to ignore the disappointment of not seeing Jake. She takes me all around Manhattan showing me where celebrities eat, shop and live. We talk about our past and what our lives have been like and we even spend 2 hours shopping. I didn't realize just how much I've missed Beth till now. And it bugs me that I have to leave the city so soon. By 5:15 we arrive at my hotel and I am beat.
"I hate to leave you Mel but I have to do some cake testing with Caine." She smiles as she says his name and I squeeze her hand in happiness.
"I can't believe your getting married Beth! This is so wonderful to hear! I'll make sure to get the perfect suit for Dean so we can match."
"Who is Dean?" Her face looks confused and disgusted, a look that only Beth can do.
"He's my boyfriend." I take out my phone to show her a picture but she raises her hand to stop me.
"Maybe another time Mel. Because trust me we will be talking about him." She takes my phone and enters her number. She then takes a duck face selfie and hands it back to me. "I am so happy we could hang out! Text me anytime and be forewarned you will be getting late night calls from me." She fixes her hair and checks the time.
"About what?"
"Anything I want. I have 3 years to catch up on." Beth winks and shoos me out of the car. "We will be seeing each other soon Melody! Love ya!" Before the car speeds off the concierge comes to get all of my bags. When we get into the lobby I see Miranda sipping a drink. When she sees me she laughs.
"I guess you're friend wore you out?" She looks behind me to the tons of shopping bags and gives me a questioning look.
"Yeah Beth doesn't hold back. We did some shopping and she decided it was the perfect time to find me a dress for her wedding. She bought me three. Along with matching shoes and accessories. And a bunch of other stuff. Oh and don't worry she bought me a matching Chanel luggage set to put everything in." I tell the concierge my room and he takes the bags to the elevator.
"Wow you really do have friends in high places." I smile and lean against the bar she is sitting by.
"So what now?" She looks at her watch and sighs.
"When we were at the pier I was able to get in contact with an old friend to do the invitations. I went to see him... for more reasons then one if you get my drift and he finished them for me. All I need is for you to take them to this store," She hands me an address and the boxes of invites, "and no have them sent out. Other than that everything is set for now. Once you come back you can pack your stuff, then we'll go somewhere fancy and buy some dinner and drinks. Then get some rest. We have an early flight tomorrow." I nod and head back out to catch a cab.
I return to the hotel an hour later and I feel like such a business woman. I was able to bargain with the delivery company to lower the price and send out the invites by tomorrow afternoon the latest. When I tell Miranda she smiles and points to a simple black mini I packed. It takes me 15 minutes to get ready and we go to the Trump hotel for dinner. The food is amazing and the waiter was very polite. Even though it was overpriced we spilt the bill and had a great time. Afterwards we walked around time square and shopped a little.
It's 10:38 when we get to our room and I text Trev that our breakfast date will have to be reschedule. He responds with a sad face and a broken heart saying he had planned on kidnapping me so I could never return home but now his plans were ruined... Typical Trevor.

When we arrive back in Toronto I am surprised at my sour mood. I feel upset and annoyed and grumpy and I don't know why. Everything went as planned and we had a great time! I was even able to see Beth too and it was so much fun to hang with her for a bit. But now that I'm back I feel perplexed. Miranda has already left 20 minutes ago and I am waiting with my three piece Chanel luggage set and my carry on for Dean to pick me up. He told me he was going to pick me up yesterday but I didn't expect him to be so late. He's never late. I would call him but my phone is dead and the charger is burried somewhere deep within one of my bags. I wait another 10 minutes before I get frustrated and hail a cab. Just as my packing in my last bag I see a car pull up. It looks oddly familiar but I choose to ignore it. It isn't until the person steps out and stares me right in the face that I gasp.
