"...this spirit, I ask you to join me in making Nigeria a more perfect nation and democracy such that the Nigerian ideal becomes and forever remains the Nigerian reality.
With full confidence in our ability, I declare that this things are within our proximate reach because my name is Olumide Adedeji, and I am the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
May God bless you and may he bless our fatherland." Mr. Adedeji finished and the crowd grew wild with "speech-induced" rounds and rounds of applause.
David glared at his TV screen angrily.
How dare he
How dare he talk about a perfect nation when he's making it impefect
"That position belongs to my father. My father is in a fucking hospital and his socalled friend is going about enjoying his presidential life without even visiting for once." David screamed, fuming.
As he was catching his breath, his phone rang.
It was a hidden number.
"Hello David." The voice spoke.
"Femi." David shouted.
"I know you're excited to hear from me. After all, you are now the best friend of the president's son."
"Shut up. Just shut up. Who is excited to hear from you. All I need is a plausible reason - a legal ground to hang you and your chicanery-practising father.Femi, you don't deserve to breathe." David spat and hung up.
He was breathing hard.
It wasn't up to a minute later that a number called him.
"Hello." David said in exasperation.
"Hello. I know how you feel. Your father not fulfilling his dream due to an accident, or a shooting. You're losing your family and everything is tearing apart. But this is our work and we have to do it right."
"Shut up." David spat.
"Okay. I see that you are really pissed. But I will suggest you tame your mouth if you really love your family." The voice replete with arrogance said.
David calmed down. Slowly, he brought his fingers to his toes pinching them softly relishing the little comfort the action provided while his phone lay on the ground carelessly as he got ready to listen to the voice's tirade.
"I don't know why it's so hard for you to make a choice. Are you not a man? One of the major roles of men is taking responsibility and making choices. A full month and two weeks has gone and you've not made your choice. I'm beginning to think you're selfless, choosing to sacrifice yourself for your family members, but can't just understand that you're not just sacrificing your life but that of Cecilia also for Kemi. Awwn, such cute love." The voice mocked.
David remained mute, throwing his head back in a dramatic fashion and shutting his eyes.
Sometimes, when you close your eyes, you tend to have inner peace and rest until someone comes digging for you, disrupting the short period of little bliss.
"David, are you still alive?"
"Alive? Yes. Sane? When you're dead."
David's temper spoke through him.
He knew better than to be rude to the monster holding his girlfriend captive but he felt disgusted about the man. The disgust was so strong that he couldn't hold it back.
"I won't stoop low to exchange insults with you. When I'm ready, I will get you." The voice said.
"I can see that to you. This is just a game. Killing people is thrilling to you." David said and the the person hung up.
David was troubled, his vapid face showing signs of stress and lack of sleep. He was doing late night thinking, strategizing all the time but his efforts were always coming to nought.
He slowly dragged his drifting attention back to the large-screen TV facing him.
A newscaster was reporting something.
Breaking News
"Mr. Hamzat, Sen. Okonkwo, Mr. Adebayo and five others were found dead in their various homes. The police are actively searching for the criminal or criminals. From their manner of death, it is concluded that they were killed by highly-skilled sniper(s). The police are putting in their efforts to catch the criminals who had the nerve to commit this nefarious deeds.
Let's hear from Mr.Uche who is reporting from Owerri, Imo state-"
David turned off the TV. The news was too much off a burden for his weak mind to process.
"No, not Kemi's dad. Mr. Adebayo dead!" He exclaimed in sorrowful agony.
Mr. Hamzat, Sen. Okonkwo and others dead.
When will this stupid group end this awful killings?
The Inner Circle or so.
Let me see whether I can do some dirty work to get more information about them.
David felt a new burst of energy surge and flow through out his veins.
There's hope. A little speck of it but he was going to make a giant out of it.
This he was sure of doing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
She was looking battered and was now a tremulous person, jumping at the slightest movement. A shadow of her old self. Her better past was now the figment of her imagination.
She felt so useless, locked in a dark room for 46 days, locked away from people that are not suffering from twisted reasoning, locked away from the things and people that give her joy and make her feel meaningful. She felt like giving up and dying, but she was too much of a coward to do so or at least, that's what she thought.
I need to get out of here, but how?
The thought grew more vivid with every passing second but again, she was too much of a coward to attempt escape.
I just have to wait for the day I would have my freedom but at the expense of who? Is it David or Cecilia? No, that can't happen. So, what can I do?
Her line of thoughts was interrupted by a short guy entering her room.
Is it Tiny or Short. Yeah, I think I remember their names.
This should be Tiny, the more foolish twin.
"Hey Kemi. I have something to show you." Tiny said, inching closer to her huddled form crouching on the cold floor.
"This one that you're acting nice, I hope you don't have something up your sleeves." Kemi said with doubt etched into her face.
"I guess I really have something up my sleeves, and it was probably bulging for you to notice it that fast."
A thick ominous silence prevailed for a moment followed by a sinister laugh.
"So, let me show you what I want to show you, shall I?" Tiny said.
Kemi stared at him for a full minute before speaking.
"Let me see."
Tiny laughed again.
Tiny crouched down to her level and double-tapped his screen to wake it up. He paused and smiled before unlocking his phone.
"I saw this on the news and felt it may concern you." He said.
It was an Opera News article.
Kemi read,"Sen. Okonkwo, Mr. Hamzat, Mr. Adebayo and others found dead in their houses, due to sniper strikes."
She paused, comprehending the situation.
"No, dad. Noooo." She screamed.
Tears started forming in her eyes.
"I know you fools are behind this. God will judge you." She screamed, watching Tiny bounce out of the room and lock the door from outside.
Why should this happen? Because of Mr. Sylvester and David, my father is dead.
She sobbed for a long time until her behavior turned presaic and she lay down increasingly becoming somnolent.
Then, she felt asleep thinking she was dying.
