{16} Panic

L O G A N

It is that time of the school year where students walk up and down holding books, lots and lots of cramming is done and people come to school with giant eye bags and dark circles. Even though it is just the midterm exams, everybody is running helter skelter. Except me, I'm stuck teaching Don maths, and Ayo, he is teaching Jordan physics. Scarlet, the school's ace is just sitting on the table with her eyes closed and leaning on the wall, like usual.

Shelia and Sharon are currently revising math too. It's surprising to see Sharon fully awake on a Monday morning. April was doing literature since she doesn't take physics courses, while Phyllis is at a corner solving problems like crazy. Do exams really affect people?!

"You are a nerd Logan, exams might not affect you but it affects other people!" Don angrily retorted to my carelessly spoken thought and was immediately sided by my other classmates, Gallen and Mumbai who tagged along with the teaching. Milan and Christine were hovering around Phyllis now and others were with Ayo.

The bells for first paper rang and sent us to our seats while Mr Heng, our math teacher came in with the questions. He didn't say anything but passed the questions around and we started with work. As sophomore students, we had to work extra questions and take lots of tests to prepare us for our GCSE exams.

As soon as I got my question, I began to solve it. I looked at Scarlet's work to see how far she's gone, golly, she's fast! While the teacher wasn't looking, I turned back to face Ayo, he was just like Scarlet, and Shelia who was struggling a bit but she was getting it. I faced my work to avoid misunderstanding and continued.

Next paper was physics/literature/accounting. My forte has never been physics but I weathered through.

After a week of exams and brain wrecking, the results came out and I checked mine with the gang.

I came third hun? No fair! Ayo passed me with only a 0.04 mark! Anyway, among the beast ten (as Jordan dubbed us), Scarlet is the smartest and Don is the dumbest.

I've gotta tell Nata this news, I came third instead of last in a test. The feeling is so new to me. I am not forced to deliberately write wrong answers in exams and people don't judge me for my brain unlike at my last school.

School's over so I headed straight to work at the coffee shop. I work at the mall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and through out Saturdays while at the coffee shop, I work on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. Sunday is my only free day. Oh man, girls would come flooding the shop just to give me extra head ache. Oh well, perks of being handsome I guess. Although I enjoyed a lot of free chocolate on Valentine's day, I had to reject and reject many many confessions.

Let's just say I made a lot of girl (space) friends and left the others that didn't want to stay friends but something more crying. I remember the day I came together with Shelia to school holding hands...it was horrible.

"And I'll have one iced americano." The girl ordering winked at me flirtatiously and I immediately told her that I was taken by...I showed her Sheila's picture on my phone... a super hot long haired angel and that her make up caked face doesn't stand a chance against Sheila's natural beauty. She angrily stomped off for no reason and forgot my tip!

While I was cleaning a table, my phone vibrated against my pocket. I took it out to read the message from an unknown number.

From unknown:

You can run and hide.

I frowned, must be a spam message. Immediately I put the phone back into my pocket, it vibrated again.

From unknown:

I will always find you no matter how long it takes.

This message got my heart racing as I became self conscious and suspicious. I looked around for any sign of a suspicious person but I found none, then the phone vibrated again.

From unknown:

Be calm, I haven't found you.

I sighed in relief despite myself. Who is this anyway?

"Logan, those tables aren't going to clean themselves." The manager scolded and I apologized while pocketing my phone. The stupid phone vibrated again and I checked the message.

From unknown:

...Yet.

It vibrated again.

From unknown:

One by one, I will kill those closest to you once I find you.

My heart clenched, no, don't tell me... The phone vibrated.

From unknown:

Okay, Son, let the game begin. I win this round. It is a draw. 1 - 1.

I suddenly found it hard to breathe. Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Maru somehow got my number! He is but a step away to finding me! No!

A sudden vision of blood dashed across my face as my knees became weak. I struggled with my breathing and my arms were trembling. All I could see was blood, my father, lashes and pain. Somewhere in my subconscious, I remembered to smash my phone to bits so that he wouldn't be able track my location. Why? Why? It has been three years, why is he after me?!

A sharp pain lanced through my head and my world became dark.

A Y O

On my way to the coffee shop Logan worked at, I noticed girls trooping into the shop and screaming. My, he sure attracts girls like flies on honey. Hold that thought, the look on their faces does not portray the 'I met a god look', it was more of fear, panic and sympathy. When I got closer, I could hear what they were saying.

"Oh my God, is he okay?"

"Oh no, what do we do?"

"He fainted! Call the ambulance!"

Who fainted? I pulled up and went into the shop to find people gathering around somebody. That somebody was Logan.

"LOGAN!" I screamed and I ran to where he lay. His phone was bashed and his hair was disheveled like he ran his hands through it. "What happened?!" I asked.

"Who are you? Wait, that doesn't matter now. He was reading a message on his phone when he suddenly started stomping on it, then he fell and was muttering stuff until he fainted." A man explained.

"Muttering stuff like what?" I asked.

"Father, stop. Please... Something like that." A girl from the crowd answered.

Father?

"I think he had a panic attack." Somebody from the crowd suggested. I also think so.

"Call the ambulance!" Another person suggested.

No! His identity would be revealed immediately, I can't let that happen. Without thinking, I hoisted him up and carried him to my car, earning myself suspicious questions. "I'm his brother." I said to throw the crowd off my neck and I put him in the car and drove home.

Since my step-mother is a doctor, I have learned some basic first aid skills from her. I carried him to my room and locked the door in case then I proceeded to remove his contacts. After that I performed some CPR and thankfully, that was all I needed to do to get him breathing again.

I left him to sleep while I prepared lunch. I sat in the living room inspecting his phone, why did he smash it? A thud upstairs brought me out of my thoughts and I went there with food and water on a tray. There he was on the floor struggling to stand so I dropped the tray and helped him back to the bed.

"Ayo? What happened?!" He asked.

"I should be asking you that question. Logan. You had a panic attack and smashed your phone. Why did you smash your phone?" I watched as Logan's eyes widened with fear as he fumbled with the blanket.

"He found me." He admitted with such a small voice that I almost didn't hear it. "My father found me."

"What do you mean?" I was confused. Then he explained how he was on the run from his serial killer of a father and his frequent panic attacks. I was mad, why didn't he tell me?! So I decided to voice my feelings but he just yelled at me instead.

"He would kill you! He would kill me, he would kill everybody!!! You don't know that man, Ayo, he could be right under our noses and still we won't notice him!" He yelled and I sighed.

"Yo, remember I'm also targeted. We're in this together and don't forget my dad is a detective, my mom was a tech genius and my step mom is a doctor, we'll win this!" I pacified his unsettled spirit although what I said made no sense. He ate anyway and looked at me blankly.

"You didn't add salt." He bluntly stated like I hadn't realized already but he ate it anyway and I did too. I'm a bad cook.
