Prologue

The man walked through the cold night, his winter coat barely staying in place as the strong winds rushed towards him again, even more mercilessly than last time. His boots sunk into the heavy December snow, not letting him move a single inch. That was it, he thought, falling onto his knees. The first drop of sadness dripped from his eye, only to become a part of the cold sea surrounding him.

He lowered his head in defeat, a quiet sob escaping his lips. But then, he saw a light.

Up above him, at the top of the ice wall that some might even call a mountain, hung a single torch. A torch that couldn't possibly stay lit in these temperatures. It almost seemed as if... the torch was lit by magic. A smile curled up the man's lips, and a bubble of hope filled his chest. That was what he was looking for. Home.

He had returned.

The man rose up immediately, his mood suddenly changing, pushing him forwards and upwards. The torch seemed closer than ever before, and its cozy warmness started inching towards the man's coat and gloves.

It was taken too soon, unfortunately. Way too soon.

The man stopped to a halt as he heard a loud rush of air approaching. Wingbeats, perhaps, of something too strong for the man to overcome. Something deadly, for sure.

Up above him hovered a huge creature, covered in pale blue ice. A dragon. An ice dragon.

The beast flew towards him at a speed faster than he could fathom, and it swung his tail wide, hitting the man into the cold snow once again. The man couldn't even get up before he was lifted up in the air and thrown to the ground.

Out of breath, he turned to see the dragon's furious, icy face. It was clearly unpleasant with the situation, its eyes going narrow with rejection, then wide with the shock of recognition.

"You shouldn't be here... not yet". The dragon's deep voice filled the snowy valley. The man stood up again, not caring about anything that that dragon wanted him to do. As he rose, a grin flashed on the man's face. The dragon took a step back wearily. He was clearly scared.

"What makes you think you're better than me? The fact that you got all the power? No..." The man chuckled, as if he was mad. "No." He continued, taking another step towards the giant beast. "You havn't changed a bit, you know. Trying to act stronger than you really are is just what defines your character. Your weak character."

The dragon's eyes looked almost human, with all the fear that swirled inside them. "Do not pass me-" The creature's voice tumbled, giving the cue for the man's plan.

"Do not pass me!"

"I know your weakness, Dragon. I know it. You need a heir, don't you? I-"

"It's none of your human business what I do or do not need."

"Oh, it definitely is."

"Don't..."

"Dragon. Your heir, whoever it may be, cannot take your place."

"Are you trying to put a curse on me?"

"Yes. Dragon, your heir will be so useless, so ordinary, so weak. Its potential will stay locked inside, not able to spring out."

"No you don't..."

"It'll stay locked inside, as long as I live!"

The dragon glared at the mountains, filled with rage. And the man?

The man walked away.

(So that was the prologue😊
