Chapter 46 - The Devil Brothers

Callahan's POV

As I sensed the intense power coming from the festival ground, I left immediately. My heart thumped and my instinct screaming in my ears.

I knew that familiar power so well. The strong, domineering energy that could make anyone kneel before them. It was doubtlessly Almorach. My jaw muscles clenched as my whole body transformed in my devil form.

I knew Carson was there as my instinct howled and I immediately reached where I sensed the powers coming form.

I looked around and saw Miorith was there. No sign of Gretarioth and I had sent Droy to protect Andrew. And definitely no signs of any other devils.

"Where is Gretarioth?" I asked, my voice turned cold and harsh.

Miorith was in her devil form as well. Dark skin glinting in the night with two horns resting on her head but they were smaller than mine and a tail wiggling around her legs while her long black hair which were in a thick braid rested onto her thighs. She seemed cautious as her sharp hollowed eyes moved everywhere finding for the enemies.

"No clue. He said he needed to go and left." Miorith said I narrowed my eyes.

"Where could he have gone?" I thought as many notions ran into my mind.

Gretarioth had all the access in my domain and he had the same power as me--slightly lower but he was exactly a carbon copy of me if not for his cocky attitude and careless behavior. And of course, his intent of killing me which he had never done. Or maybe, he did?

Could he be the one who got into the secret library? He had all the access and as he was my brother, I never questioned his movements.

My heart clenched. Would he really go to that extent to kill me? For what?

He never showed interest in ruling Hell. He would feel bored and I knew he didn't like to work. He was a lazy brat.

There was that feeling that told me he wouldn't do something like this. He wouldn't steal the orb and welcome Almorach to kill me. If he really wanted to kill me he would do it with his own hands.

He was my brother and even though he hated me, I knew what he was like.

And at the same time I felt an intense emotion of being scared and I knew who it was. It was Carson.

My eyes went round as I was about to go but two devils came there immediately. They reeked of powers and although their skin color was light-ish brown, they somehow got their powers.

"Not so fast, Lord Devionth." One of them said as his canines peeked and I looked at the direction where I felt Carson's emotions running wild. She was scared.

Had Almorach got to her already?

I cursed under my breath. Why did I have to ignore her?

I could have protected her if I was with her.

"Don't worry, your little human is fine." The other one said, smirking. "Lord Almorach has some other plans for her."

My brows twitched as my claws came out. I needed to go to her but I had to make sure they didn't come in my way.

I said with an amused smile, "Following a cowardly Lord. You amuse me."

They laughed. "Cowardly? How so? You were the one who took that throne with trickery!"

I shrugged. "Well, that's called trickery which is not cowardly at all. You can't complain if I get more powers, can you?" I mocked and now their jaws clenched as they sneered at me. Good.

They should feel the difference between them and me. I smiled a sinister smile as they seemed like they would pounce on me.

"Powers! You got that from tricking Satan!" He hissed.

"Well, what can I say? I'm more worthy than all of you." I said with a flat face which didn't make them feel good. "Besides, I don't even know you, which means you are nothing but two worthless pieces of shit."

We heard a sound beside us as sands flew everywhere when the person's feet touched the ground. As all of the gazes moved toward the entity we saw it was K'han in his massive devil form.

He was a third generation devil but he held more powers than the second generation. His ash-black skin glowed as he was bathed in the moon's light.

"You are late!" I hissed and I tapped my feet.

"Perdon, my Lord." He said as he smiled at the two devils before us and they flinched back. "I was doing some investigation."

"Who was it?"

"Mor'oth."

My lips curled up. He was our librarian who was tasked with all of our treasures.

"So he betrayed me..."

"That he did but currently we can't find him." K'han said.

"Don't need to. After all this is over," I cracked my knuckles, "I will hunt him down and punish him with my own hands." I grinned as the two devils felt a little vulnerable.

"Enough with this!" The other one said as another devil came and I knew who it was.

Igrun. How could I forget him? He was one of my enemies.

Ah! Well, I took all of his souls that he had collected. No wonder he was registered in my enemy list.

"Riling up my minions would do nothing, Devionth." He smiled as he looked at me.

I smiled back, "Well, that's my charm."

He nodded as he said, "You know it took me years to corner you. I have to say you are really powerful after becoming a Lord."

Igrun's black skin gave off a dangerous vibe but it wasn't enough to make me feel vulnerable. He was one of my minions centuries ago before I took away all of his souls. He was collecting them without any contracts and you can't have anything without giving anything. The human souls he gathered by killing them. And as a punishment, I took all of the souls and returned them to heaven since they didn't belong to us. Their time didn't come yet they had to die like this. I had cast Igrun away since he was my trusted subject but now that I think, I should have shredded his head.

I laughed. "Corner me? I beg to differ."

"Well, since you have a very interesting list of enemies and they say--what was the human quote again?" He thought for a moment. "Ah! Enemy's enemy is a friend."

"Oh! You flatter me too much, Igrun." I said.

"Don't worry, there will be more to come." He said as one by one, more devils emerged from the darkness. Devils and demons with different powers and status.

We were surrounded by them. While they had so many coming, we were only three.

"Lord Devionth... Just how many enemies do you have?!" Miorith asked.

I looked at the circle and many of the faces, I don't even recognise. "Well, what's the point of being a ruler if I don't even have any enemies?"

Miorith gave me a look while K'han's eyes slowly fell on me and then again slowly turned toward the enemies.

"That's called a lot!" Miorith exclaimed.

"I don't even recognise them...most of them." Honestly, I was even surprised that I had so many enemies and I didn't even remember their faces. What have I been doing?

"How can you gain that many enemies then?"

"That's... One of my charms..." I said, maintaining a straight face.

"Can I resign my position?" Miorith asked.

"Denied."

Miorith let out a frustrated growl as she took her position, left leg behind right leg as her claws grew.

My mind went toward Carson. She was alone with Almorach.

Please wait... I will come get you. I said in my head but I knew she wouldn't be able to hear me.

I sighed with relief that Gretarioth wasn't the one doing this. I knew how he was. But where was he?

****

The library was empty with a lot of books and spells which were all useless. The real ones were hidden behind this illusionary Library and only a few people knew about it.

Not all of the first generation devils could enter and even someone entered, they could never leave it.

The librarian, Mor'oth, knew that by now, Lord Devionth might have gotten a hint. Thus, he was hiding in that vast array of endless loops in the secret library. It wasn't a library with books and scrolls but it was a ruin. It had many chambers and each one of them had their own set of worlds and only a few devils knew where to find the real books or spells in that.

Mor'oth had been a librarian for many centuries and he had acquired a great knowledge from this. He knew what that orb could do. Everyone thought it was an useless orb but he knew it can do all the wonders one could think of. After all, it was made with O'Slhae's heart. She was his grandmother and he knew everything about that orb.

It is true that it took him years to find it in that many chambers and it took more centuries to perfect his own spell with that orb.

Currently, Mor'oth took a dagger that calls all the negative energy to its owner and makes them incredibly powerful and insane.

He knew if Lord Devionth knew about him, he would find him in no time and would kill him. So the only thing he could do was to make himself powerful with that dagger.

He was hurrying to take his useful resources and information. As he put all of that in his raggy bag, he heard a voice behind him which startled him.

"Yo!"

He turned around taking the dagger and saw it was Lord Gretarioth standing in his red skin, two bull's horns and a tail that wickedly sliding left to right.

"L-Lord Gretarioth..." He said hiding the dagger and smiled as he tried to contain the fear in his forced smile.

Lord Gretarioth's eyes washed over him as he put one hand under his chin as if he was thinking something. Then he asked, "Are you going somewhere?"

"Wha- what! No..." He shook his head, his heart pumping loudly. "I was just taking some old books with myself. Since I love reading."

He nodded thoughtfully. "Well, that's the only thing you are best at."

"Yes."

Lord Gretarioth sat on the table opposite of him, wiggling his legs he asked, "Aren't you bored here? I don't even like to enter a library."

"No. A library is a treasure."

Gretarioth scoffed. "A boring treasure."

Mor'oth knew Gretarioth's relationship was bad with Lord Devionth. Although they were brothers, Gretarioth would oppose his brother and do exactly the opposite. He didn't even obey Lord Devionth. Could he use him as well?

When his mind wandered off he noticed Gretarioth wasn't there where he was sitting. His eyes moved frantically.

"What is this?" His head snapped toward Lord Gretarioth as he asked, inspecting a dagger that glinted murderously in his hands. Mor'oth's breath caught in his throat as he realized it was the dagger he stole from the vast loops of the secret library.

"That's some nice dagger you got here." He said, excitement lashing on his voice as Mor'oth felt a relief that he didn't know what it was.

He knew Lord Gretarioth had no knowledge whatsoever and he had no access to the library. Thus Mor'oth smiled and said, "It is a good knife just for protection."

"Protection from whom?" Gretarioth's voice changed a little but Mor'oth didn't notice it because he was relaxed that the stupid devil had no idea what the dagger could do. Honestly, why did he even have that much power when all he did was wander around and laze around?

He was certainly amused to see how different he was from Lord Devionth.

Lord Devionth liked to acquire knowledge as he not only had access in the library, he knew where to find those things.

"Oh. Just in case. Not for any particular person." Mor'oth said smiling.

"Or maybe, protection against my brother?" Gretarioth said as his eyes glinted devilishly and the dagger playfully rolled around his long fingers.

Mor'oth's eyes bulged out from their sockets as he saw how the knife was casually going around his fingers as if it was a small coin. He looked at the devil who was sitting on his desk with a playful smirk.

"Why-why would I have to get protection against Lord Devionth?" Mor'oth let out a nervous chuckle.

He shrugged. "Maybe because you keep stealing things? Who knows?"

Mor'oth gulped. His eyes moved between the devil's face and the knife. It was strange... The knife had been with him yet it didn't seem like Gretarioth was having any illusions so it could play with his mind. While Mor'oth held the knife, it showed him so many illusions that he was scared and he knew why people got insane. The knife certainly granted powers but it made them insane.

"Are you thinking why this knife still hasn't started to affect me?" He smiled, a sinister one which made Mor'oth's knees weak.

"Wha-what are you talking about?"

"You know well what I am talking about, Mor'oth." His eyes glowed as if the hollowness of them could devour Mor'oth. Instinctively, he stepped back.

"Do you know, Mor'oth, why this knife gives you negative illusions?" He asked.

Gretarioth only looked at the devil whom he mistaken to think as a stupid devil. It didn't seem like he was stupid after all.

"Because this knife had killed many demons and devils, even angels and while getting killed, their wishes--negative wishes and emotions--have been entrusted to it." He said with a smile.

Mor'oth certainly didn't know that.

"How did you know that?" He asked.

"Because it was a gift to me from my father. Of course, I would know that." He laughed. Oh! That laugh! It shook all of Mor'oth's bones as he stepped back. He felt that the knife somehow resembled his menacing aura, sipping out the devil before him.

He didn't know that. No one mentioned this to him. It wasn't written anywhere.

But now he knew why that knife wasn't doing anything to him because Lord Gretarioth was the owner of it. It never had enough power to possess the devil. It only possessed those with weaker hearts and weaker powers. He knew now.

It was all an illusion that the knife granted any powers. It didn't. It only made them feel like they were powerful.

"You thought this knife could protect you? From my brother?" Gretarioth smiled as amusement danced in his eyes, then he turned the tip of the knife to his heart. He pushed it on his skin but the knife could not cut his skin as he said with a wicked grin, "The knife would never cut us for it belonged to us."

What wrong information could do. He had no idea. Does that mean all that he knew of the secret library were all lies?

But he knew what the orb could do. Then he realized, he only knew what the orb could do. He had no knowledge what other spells or antiques could do. Because those were all classified and all those information he read were all lies.

Mor'oth looked at the devil who sat on his desk like he owned the place. He knew what would happen next and he was prepared.

"My knife is really hungry, Mor'oth." Gretarioth said with a broad grin and the next thing he heard before his head shredded from his shoulders, "Why don't you feed yourself to it?"
