Chapter 35 - The Devil is Considerate
"What do you mean?" Lily asked as her tears dripped on her pale skin.
Mr Denver entered and came toward her as he sat beside the weakened lady. He embraced her in his arms and said, "I married you even when I was well aware of the conclusion. I decided to stay with you for these small span of years even if I had to live alone for the rest of my life. I will live with the memories we made together."
Tears kept falling from Lily's eyes as she leaned into Mr Denver's warmth and it wasn't only her, even I started to sniff. I was so moved at the love they shared for each other that I hadn't realized when my tears created translucent paths on my cheeks. Their love was pure and there was no selfishness or want in it. It was ironic that they belonged to different races with different life spans yet that didn't stop them from loving each other. Knowing so well that one day, they would part their ways, they lived the small moments they had and they would cherish those memories forever.
"But you will be lonely." Lily sniffed.
"I have my boys with me, how will I be lonely?" He said.
Lily looked at him and said, "I love you."
"I couldn't love you more." Mr Denver said and my insides howled for them.
I heard a sound and looked at the door and saw the boys were standing there looking at their parents with wide eyes. But the older one seemed to guess as his face fell and although his lips quivered, he didn't cry. What a strong boy!
I sniffed then another sound came just beside me. We all became startled as our eyes fell on the source. It was Callahan standing there with wary eyes.
He looked at me and with a concerned voice he asked, "What happened? I sensed a great emotional turmoil in you."
I looked at him with a wide gap in my mouth as he chose this moment, the heart touching, stomach tingling, and kidney melting moment to arrive.
I glared at him and said in a low voice, "This is a touching moment!"
Callahan furrowed his brows as his eyes moved on them one by one and then he realized he had stumbled upon a very delicate moment. "Ah! I see..."
He turned around and said, "Then I am going back..."
I almost slammed my head in my palms. Someone teach this devil some manners!
"My Lord, please wait!" Mr Denver said as the couple composed themselves. While Lily's cheeks turned red, Mr Denver managed his posture quite professionally. Both of the boys looked at Callahan as if he had grown another head and I couldn't blame them because he certainly crashed here.
Callahan looked at Mr Denver as the demon went toward him and asked, "Would you like to join us? Since we're about to have our lunch."
Callahan thought for a moment then said, "Alright. If it is not a problem."
"Of course not!" Mr Denver exclaimed enthusiastically as if his Lord finally gave him attention. "Please, let me introduce you to my wife and children."
Callahan turned toward Lily and said, "I know everything about her. Lily Denver, an ex-nurse, 38 years old. Married to Hiriotus. Has one kid."
Mr Denver said, "Err... But I have two kids."
Callahan's eyes narrowed down at him for a moment. "Have they forgotten to put your information there?"
Mr Denver didn't understand a thing as he only blinked and with him, Lily and I blinked as well.
"Callahan... Stop being rude! Let him introduce you formally." I said a bit annoyed and he gave me a look.
Since Mr Denver wasn't going to go against his words, I took this in my hands to introduce them one by one.
"This is Mrs Lily Denver." I said to him and turned to Lily, "Lily, he is Callahan."
She nodded and smiled at him as she said, "I have heard about Lord Devionth from my husband a lot."
"Ho~" Callahan looked at Mr Denver as the poor demon's face reddened with embarrassment. "So, did Hiriotus bad mouth me behind my back?"
Lily chuckled, shaking her head. "No. He would not. All he said about the great things you have done in Hell."
Callahan seemed impressed and nodded as he said to her, "Well, don't worry. I am always here for my subjects."
I looked at him with narrowed eyes as to why he said this. Then seeing Lily's wide eyes, I could guess he must have heard her thoughts. Lily nodded and without hopeful eyes she said, "Thank you, Lord Devionth. It will at least let me rest in peace."
Callahan gave her a genuine smile and nodded.
And all the while, both Mr Denver's and my eyes followed them. Okay! What did she think?
"That's none of your concern." He said to me with a blank face and added, "It is her last wish."
I didn't ask anything further knowing so well Callahan had always granted his minions' wishes. Even though he always seemed stoic and harsh about it. But it made me smile that he listened to Lily's wishes and assured her which maybe none of us could do.
"This is my older son, Robert." Mr Denver said as Callahan's eyes fell on him. He seemed a bit intimidated by him as he stepped back. Callahan's eyes turned hollow and the boy's eyes turned hollow following him as Callahan nodded.
It seemed more like Callahan made him turn his eyes hollow and Robert followed his orders.
"He is a great champ, Hiriotus. A good one with great power, I see." Callahan said which brought both Lily and Mr Denver smiles.
"Hmm..." Callahan hummed. "Hiriotus, did you have horns?"
"No, my Lord. A low class demon such as myself never had horns."
"But your child seemed to have horns."
Mr Denver peeked at Robert from behind Callahan as his body held almost all the free spaces in that small room. From the bed, Lily asked a little worried, "Is that dangerous?"
"Not necessarily. It is great news. Because low class demons never grow horns and having horns meant, they have a great amount of powers." Callahan informed as Mr Denver nodded, taking in the information.
From his information, it seemed both the parents released from tension.
Callahan moved his hand and Robert's human body transformed into a little demon. He was blue-purple and his little horns were the size of canines.
As he transformed into his original form, Robert seemed to be panicking as he asked, "Wh-what happened to me?"
Callahan smiled at him as he said with an assuring voice, "Don't worry, champ, it is just your real form. Don't force it away but don't reveal it in front of anyone."
Robert nodded frantically.
Mr Denver noted, "I had never seen his horns before. When did it appear?"
"Well, it is great news since he has a good amount of powers and maybe one day, he could get a position in Hell. If his powers grow, I will train him."
Mr Denver seemed to win a jackpot as soon as Callahan's words left his mouth. All the while, Lily and I were only the audience as none of us understood a thing.
"What about my younger one?" Mr Denver asked.
"Where is he?" Callahan asked and we found he wasn't there.
Mr Denver called his name a few times but he didn't come as he said, "He might be overwhelmed by your energy, my Lord. I apologize for the child's rudeness."
"It is alright." Callahan said as Mr Denver led all of us to the dining place.
We sat there as Mr Denver and Robert helped organize the table. I asked him if I could help but he refused.
"What about Lily?" I asked.
"Oh! I will feed her now. Her hands have weakened so it is either Robert or me who feeds her." He said as he served us.
"What about Allan?" I asked again since he hadn't come back from before. Must be scared of how Callahan startled them. Robert sat beside Callahan and it seemed his tense body was replaced with a cheerful one because now he was conversing with Callahan.
"I have to search for him. He always goes away whenever he feels threatened or I scold him." Mr Denver sighed.
Allen seemed to be like a sensitive kid. It kind of reminded me of my brother, Andrew. He was sensitive too. But with time, he became strong. I couldn't wait to meet them again as we would be leaving for the festival.
Callahan, Robert and I started to eat as Mr Denver said, "Let me go feed my wife. I need to give her medicine afterwards."
We nodded as he bowed to Callahan and said before leaving,"Please excuse me."
"So, Robert, how's school going?" Callahan asked.
"I don't go to school anymore." Robert said with a sad face.
"And why is that?"
"Because I can't control this and the horns, the eyes and my teeth grow sometimes on their own. Once a teacher almost saw me." Robert said as he chewed on his vegetables.
"Then that is a problem. Why don't you come to me and I will teach you everything there?" Callahan proposed, "You don't even have to worry about anyone seeing your demonic side."
He shook his head. "I can't."
"Ho~"
"My dad will be all alone and can't look after my brother alone." He said as if all the responsibility had fallen on those little shoulders of him.
Callahan nodded but didn't say anything as Robert peeked at him.
"Lord Devionth?" He asked but he was a bit hesitant.
"What is it?"
He nibbled the end of his sleeves and asked, "Ca-can you cure my mom?"
The vegetable I was eating fell from my hand as Callahan looked at him with a blank face. This boy knew that his mother was sick and dying. My heart ached and Callahan seemed to sense my emotion as she looked at me with concern. But he met with my puffy eyes and he sighed both at Robert and I.
"Unfortunately, I can't." He answered. "I can heal them to a certain extent but can't cure an incurable disease. It would take a lot more power to cure that."
"Then, my power?" He asked innocently yet with hopeful eyes and I bit my lips to stop the quivering of my lips.
Callahan chuckled as he ruffled his hair and said, "Maybe in a few centuries you can but not now. Your powers haven't fully developed."
Robert's face fell and he wasn't touching his food as Callahan said, "I can do something that will make the process a little slow."
"But that still means, she will be gone."
"Yes. You can't run from what's about to come."
Seemingly, Robert understood it and said, "Sorry. Don't tell my dad about this?"
Callahan chuckled. "Alright. It is our man-to-man secret."
Robert smiled then his eyes fell on me. "But she heard us."
Callahan looked at me with a narrow gaze. "Hmm... Disregard her existence."
And Robert seemed to obey him as he nodded.
A gap formed in my mouth as I slapped Callahan's arm. "Hey! What are you teaching a child?"
"He is not a child anymore." He said, "And can you eat a little fast? I have to go back and I will drop you to your apartment."
"I can go by myself. Thank you very much." I said as I chewed on my food angrily.
"Carson. After I drop you to the apartment, no going out." He said.
"I said, I can go-" I halted as I saw Callahan's displeased eyes on me. He seemed like he was about to pounce on me. I gulped.
"Okay." I said and like a good little girl, I ate quietly.
"So, that's how you tackle a woman?" Robert asked as his eyes moved between Callahan and me.
Callahan smiled, seemingly pleased with him. "Yes. I will show you other ways once you start training under me."
I gasped as I saw Robert's eyes glowed with excitement and I sent daggers at Callahan. Honestly, what did he teach his pupils?
I was literally worried about this child's future.
