Chapter 33 - The Devil is Protective
I looked at him for a moment. "What do you mean by who knows?"
Currently we were sitting on the bed and I was trying to figure out what he meant by that. For some reason, I could tell he was avoiding the conversation.
Callahan sighed. "Well, we had an argument then a little fight and after that they surrendered."
I nodded. "So...they won't come right?"
"That's what they said, at least." He gave a curt nod but somehow it all seemed a bit fishy. And his posture was too stiff. He was hiding something.
"Then why are you here? Go back." I said and he opened his mouth to say something but closed after realizing that he had no excuses to stay here. And I knew that it hadn't ended yet because he didn't want to go away.
I raised my brow and he sighed frustratedly. "Fine! It hasn't ended..." He mumbled and looked at me with his anger stricken eyes. "How the hell are you getting smart? You literally cornered me there."
I slapped on his forearm. "Hey! What do you mean by that? I was always smart!"
"Sure." He said with a lazy gaze. "Let's go back to sleep. It is past midnight."
And he avoided the conversation again. But I wasn't going to let it slide easily. "So, why are you so stiff and hesitant to go back if they said they won't come after the devils?" I pressed not letting him ignore the conversation at all.
He looked into my eyes and it seemed he was on the edge as he realized I wasn't letting him go. I could feel his annoyance sipping out of his skin and the slight twitch on his jaw. I crossed my hands over my chest clearly, I wasn't going to back down until he said something.
He said through his gritted teeth, "They won't come."
I raised a brow to keep him carrying on because that wasn't all.
He finally sighed. "But something doesn't feel right here." His face turned grim and it made me a little scared. From what I had heard of Callahan, he is the strongest and if something was making him this cautious, then we could expect a worse situation.
"The tribe has no power to follow the devils to earth. True that they have good soldiers to fight but they don't have enough power to wander around the human world. And besides, they attack together, not alone."
"So, what are your thoughts on this?" I asked as my body felt restless and I wanted to hear the conclusion of this situation although I had guessed it already but hearing it from him made things settle.
His green eyes fell on me and I saw worry and a bile appeared in my throat. He said, "There must be someone who helped them and it is the same one who stole the ancient thing."
Alright! Now I was officially scared. The bile in my throat deepened and suddenly I felt my bottom part acting up. Err... I felt the need to go to pee.
I stood up and asked, "You cleaned the bathroom right?"
"Yes. I did."
I nodded and I was about to go when I recalled this wasn't over at all. Some enemy, a deadly and dangerous one, might be lurking around. My feet froze as I stood still before the door and my hand stayed on the knob. I hadn't twisted the knob yet.
"Err... Callahan?" I turned around as my eyes fell on his lying body. His eyes were closed but as I called him, he opened them and looked at me.
"What?"
"Mmm... Do you-can you wait outside of the bathroom?" I asked, a bit embarrassed.
He furrowed his brows. Then it clicked him that I was scared as hell to go to the bathroom alone and his chest bobbed as he laughed while still lying on the bed.
"What?! Don't laugh!" I shouted as heat shot my cheeks and I twisted the knob while opening the door with a grumpy mood.
Callahan came right beside me and asked, "Are you that scared?"
"What do I do then? You guys told me about all those powerful enemies so I am on edge here." I pouted. Well, anyone would be scared!
He placed his hand on my back and stroked on it as he said in a gentle voice, "What did I tell you? They won't be able to do anything when I'm here."
His voice was so gentle and it promised safety and protection, I felt at ease and somehow I believed him.
"Fine. Then don't go anywhere while I pee." I looked at him with my worried stricken eyes because I was still scared of the unknown sources.
"Alright. I'm here." He said as he leaned on the wall opposite of the bathroom.
"No peeking or no reading my mind!" I warned as I opened the door.
He rolled his eyes. "Fine!"
Well, now that he was here, I wasn't scared anymore but one thought still lingered in me. "What if they kidnap me while I'm pooping?"
"Just fart on their face. Easy." Callahan answered as I glared at him. He read my thoughts again even if I told him not to.
"Stop joking!" I shouted.
"Who started it?" He asked lazily as I closed the door on his face.
After a while, we laid on the bed but sleep didn't want to come to my eyes as if it had abandoned me. My eyes moved everywhere in the dark room and wherever my gaze fell, I felt someone was watching me or standing there. Even when I kept my lids closed, I felt someone might be pacing around the room.
Blast it! I was just too scared that my mind played horror games with me.
I turned to Callahan and immediately felt angry because he was sleeping like there was no worry in the world. His eyes were closed while his right hand was under his head. I was at the right side of him and his torso was bare before me.
I looked at the window which was on the right side of me. The curtains swung and the darkness around it scared me. I instinctively slid toward Callahan but there was nothing so I could hold. Like, his shirt or his hands. The only thing I could hold was either his pants or his torso.
I was flushed but more than that I was scared. I looked behind me toward the window and the sky had darkened behind it. The slight lights illuminated from it gave shadows on the curtains and my mind pictured them as an unknown entity. The hair on my back stood straight as I wrapped my hands around Callahan, buried my face at the side of his chest and I closed my eyes tightly.
In a moment, his right hand that was under his head, came down and wrapped around my back as he turned toward me. His left hand fell on my waist and now I was cocooned inside his arms.
But the scary images went away from my mind and I felt the tension perishing from my body. I felt more protected than I ever felt before.
We didn't say a word as we both stayed like that. I knew he was awake but I felt that was the way we were able to feel each other. I buried my face on his chest and soon I drifted to my slumber.
I never had that good sleep before that day. I slept like a baby and woke up when Callahan called.
"You do know it is 10a.m." He said and I blinked open my eyes. I was still wrapped in him and I immediately removed myself as I yanked away.
"Why didn't you wake me up?" I asked, panicking. My office!
"It is sunday. No office." He answered and I released a sigh.
"You should have woken me!"
"You were sleeping like a baby I couldn't help." He smirked and my ears burnt.
"Anyways I am going to the bathroom." I said and hopped out from the bed.
When I went inside the bathroom, my face heated. I slept the whole night hugging him. I placed my palms on my face and looked at the mirror. My face was red like a tomato.
I groaned. Why?! I thought of distancing myself yet I got dragged toward him.
I took a quick shower and after doing my basic chores I came back and saw he made tea and was making a quick breakfast.
The sandwiches jumped out from the toaster and I put butter on them while he fried eggs. We both sat and while eating he announced, "I have to go back to Hell."
"What? You are leaving me?" I asked, almost panicking.
"No. It is just some work. I will come back before lunch or maybe in the evening." He said and winked at me, "Don't miss me too much."
There goes his cocky comment. I rolled my eyes. "I won't."
"Ho~ Seeing you so scared and crumbling in my arms last night, I don't think you can get away from not missing me." He teased and I clenched my fists.
I knew it! I knew he was going to tease me. Why did I have to show him my vulnerable side?!
"Sh-shut up! I was just scared. Don't think of any funny businesses." I shouted but he grinned.
"But you enjoyed it, didn't you?" He narrowed down his eyes teasingly.
"Of course I wasn't!" I lied as my heart danced inside my ribcage as it had grown two wings of its own.
Well, I did enjoy his bare skin under my fingertips and his muscles against my body. The way his protective arms held me, I didn't want to go away for even a second. But I'd rather die than admit it to his face!
He stood up as he was about to go to the sink and I said, "Just leave it. I will wash them."
He nodded and said, "I will be coming back if I feel anything weird around you. So, don't worry."
I nodded and went toward the side where Callahan was sitting. In a blink of an eye, he vanished.
"Don't disappear on me and be sure to come back." I said as I took his plates and went to the sink. I knew he was gone by now as a sigh left from my lips. I knew he didn't hear it and I was just a coward to say those at his face but suddenly a gasp left from the back of my throat as a pair of hands caught my waist.
From the warmth I knew it was Callahan and I felt my heartbeat rising as he heard me. I looked behind above my shoulders as Callahan's lips crashed on me.
I felt all my energy drained as I leaned toward him and our lips moved. There was desperation in us and there was warmth. His warm breath fell on my skin and sent me wonderful bolts of lightning. He pulled away as his eyes looked into mine intensely yet so gently. "I will come back."
And he disappeared again leaving me breathless as my hands clutched to my chest and I heaved for breath. How could I throw away my feelings for him when he had started to treat me like that?
My eyes brimmed with tears. Was it an act? Somehow I didn't feel it wasn't an act. He kissed me like he needed me. I could feel his want, his desire and his...gentleness. Was all these just an act?
