Chapter 16

"C-come on guys," Mr Hans our math teacher said folding his hands. The whole class had refused to settle down. People were still chatting away with their friends, a few goofballs threw paper planes across the classrooms and others hunched over their eyes glued to their phone's screen.

Everyone was occupied except me, I sat down at the front row in class all by myself. My mind was still thinking about what had transpired in the hallway. It was evident that I needed the Devil's Order in my life.

I didn't care what I had to lose, my life needed to be sorted out right now. I took in a deep breath. It was settled then, I'm going to join the Devil's Order. I didn't have a chance though, it was either I die or join the group.

But the hard part was killing six different people. I already had Frederick in my mind, but I was scared. The dude is bigger than I am. I'm Jack and he's the freaking Giant.

"Mr Anchor, may I know why you're late to class?" Mr Hans asked as Frederick bounded into class grinning like a monkey.

"Huh?" Frederick looked at Mr Hans. "Car trouble sir."

Mr Hans rolled his eyes because he knew Frederick was lying. "Take a seat."

Frederick took a small glance around the classroom. There wasn't a free space except for a seat beside me, he shrugged and sat beside me.

I looked at him and he looked back still grinning. "What's up Nerd?"

I didn't reply to him, if all went as planned today, Frederick would be dead in a few hours.

"Okay everyone," Mr Hans was saying his arms at his back. He had a weird grin on his face, he always smiled like that when he wanted to give a test or ask a really hard question. "Who can solve this question."

He proceeded to the board and scribbled away. After a while, he stepped aside allowing most of us to see the question.

I peered through my glasses at the question. It was a word problem question, it involved a simultaneous equation.

People scratched their heads and asked each other questions, I sighed, I was the only one who knew how to solve the question, but I didn't want to answer.

As I sat on my chair quietly, Frederick kicked my chair startling me.

"What the hell man?" I snap.

"Shut up dude," Frederick said in a low tone. "Now you and I both know that you already got the answer to the question."

I frown at him. "Why do you think that?"

Frederick gives me a look. "Because you're a fucking nerd. Now go up there and solve the question."

I summon up the courage to utter my next sentence. "Why don't you do it yourself? Or are you just stupid or you don't know math, because you're a dumb motherfucker."

I say this a little bit loud and the whole class hears. Everyone gasped and stared. Including Mr Hans. "Now Chad, don't start. . ."

Frederick interrupts him. "You got balls Chad." He stood up.

I didn't know why I didn't stop. "Just two," I say.

Frederick's huge fist connected with my face sending me flying into Jason who sat down beside me.

We both crash to the ground which sent the whole class on their feet cheering.

"Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight! Fight!"

Mr Hans was shouting something but his voice was drowned by the uproar of the students.

Jason stood me up. "Chad what are you doing man?"

I stare at him and before I could say anything, Frederick grabbed my shirt and turned me around.

"Why don't you say hello to an old friend?" He grinned revealing his brown teeth. " My left fist." Frederick punched me and I felt my teeth crack.

I staggered and he gave me a couple more punches. The door burst open and principal Roy burst in, his face red and set.

The class hushed and everyone sat down murmuring silently.

The only ones standing were Frederick and I. . .and also Mr Hans.

"What's going on here?" Principal Roy folded his hands.

"He started it," Frederick pointed at me.

"I can say otherwise," Mr Hans said, he looked vexed because his class had been interrupted. "Frederick Anchor was beating Chad up."

Principal Roy raised an eyebrow. "And you couldn't do anything about it?" He asked Mr Hans who's face just fell.

"Frederick!" Principal Roy commanded. "Follow me." And with that, the two of them left the class.

I settle down on my chair, I could hear low whispers behind me and some snickers.

"Dude you okay?" Jason asked me concerned.

I nod my head.

"You know, it's kind of your fault," Jason said. "If you had just kept your mouth shut."

I stare at my best friend with shock. This was beyond unbelievable, Jason wanted me to just keep shut and not fight for myself.

Some friend.

"Alright class," Mr Hans said. "Let's get back to business. Now, who can solve the question..."

This was the last straw, I decided. I'm done taking shit from anyone. Once I finish the six blood sacrifices, my life would change forever.

Thankfully, Madison and her friends weren't in my math class this morning so I was saved from embarrassment. But the news would have already spread around the school and they would have already heard about the incident.

During lunch, I carry my bag and lock myself in a toilet stall with the Oethcyte in my hand.

I just wanted to be alone.

I ran my hand across the blade, it was sharp as hell.

One stab should do the trick, I thought. But where would I kill Frederick? I couldn't do it in the open because if I get caught I'd end up in jail for the rest of my life.

I remove the Devil's Order book from my bag and flip through some pages. I didn't know which language the book was written in. But I knew one thing though, the language wasn't of this world.

I heard the main toilet door swing open and someone entered whistling the tune of Roddy Ricch's "The Box"

I throw the book into my bag but stop when I heard a deep voice sing the opening verse of the song.

It was Frederick.

"...put up the whole damn seal, imma get lazy..."

I smile, what better time to kill Frederick than now, the whole school's in the cafeteria. And if I do this quick no one would catch me.

I took in a deep breath, drop my bag in the toilet seat and clenched the Oethcyte in my hand.

"Here goes nothing," I opened the stall door and stepped out. Frederick was zipping up his trousers and he stared at me.

He rolled his eyes. "You're lucky Principal Roy let me off with a warning, he only told me to write an apology letter to Mr Hans.

"I mean I'm the golden boy of this town. I can't get suspended or expelled." He looks at the Oethcyte in my hand.

Frederick laughs and goes to the sink to wash his hands. "So what you're no longer a nerd?"

He turns on the faucet. "You're now a serial killer? That would be pretty cool."

"This won't hurt Frederick," I say as I advanced towards him. I didn't know why I was scared and suddenly I felt like leaving Frederick alone. Even though he's a monster he deserved the right to live.

But something darker had manifested in my soul. This was the guy who tormented you since your freshman year, this was the guy who made your life miserable, this was the guy who embarrassed you in front of the whole school, this was the guy who reduced your reputation, this was the guy who made you the laughing stock of the school, this was the guy who turned you into a human punching bag.

Killing him would be an act of mercy.

Frederick turned off the faucet and turned to look at me, he chuckled. "That's cute."

I lunged at him but he slapped me away like I was a fly.

I crash to the ground and the Oethcyte fell from my grip and slipped away.

Frederick wiped his hands with a paper towel. "Look man, I don't know what's come over you but I don't have time for this. I have to come up with an apology letter to Mr Hans for disturbing his class and you know I'm no good at English."

I snorted. "It doesn't matter Frederick, you'll be at the gates of hell in no time, so there's no need to worry about any apology letter." I reach for the Oethcyte.

"What are you blabbing on about?" He looked at me pitifully. "Put down that knife man."

"No,"

He smiled. "Well. . .you started it this time." He rolled up his sleeves and dove at me.

Before I could raise the Oethcyte, he punched me hard in the stomach sending me flying. The Oethcyte flew from my hand once again.

Frederick was about to sit on top of me but I kicked him away.

He grinned and lunged at me, but I dodge and kicked him on the back. He gasped and crashed to the ground.

"Loser. "I say. Frederick growls and stood up. He lashed out his fist at me.  I dodge again and grab his head and smash it on the sink. Blood spewed out from his nose and onto the sink.

My eyes gaped in horror at the sight of blood. What am I doing?

How am I doing this? I don't know how to even fight, but here I was making the almighty Frederick bleed.

I smash his head on the sink again and throw him aside. He staggered and roared, he dived at me and thrust himself into me.

We both crash on the floor and he punched my glasses off my face. He doesn't continue to punch me, he just spits on me and stood up.

"I don't have time for you," he walks to the mirror and examines his wound.

I reach for my glasses and put them on.

"I know I'm the stronger one here, Chad but colour me impressed." Frederick was saying. "You did a number on me."

I saw the Oethcyte lying on the floor beside Frederick and I started to slowly crawl to it.

Frederick was washing his face. "Fuck you Chad, I chipped a tooth."

Those were the last words he said. I grasp the Oethcyte in my hand and thrust the blade deep into his neck.

I stabbed his neck so hard, the tip of the blade stuck out from the other side of his neck.

From the mirror, I could see Frederick's face. His eyes grew wide open and he ran his hands across his blood red neck. He opened his mouth to scream but no sound came out.

Tears rolled down his eyes and he dropped to the ground.

I stared at him, my eyes were wide too. I couldn't believe what I had just done.

Frederick lay on the ground, blood spurting from his neck. Tears ran down his eyes and he cried silently.

I realized that I was also crying.

"Why?" Frederick mouthed, with that his body became motionless and his eyes stared blankly into space.

I swallowed hard, crying uncontrollably.

I had taken someone's life.
