Chapter 12 : Safe

Sister Rosemerta was steadily heading towards where Father Robert was. She was half-walking and half-running, threatening to trip over any minute on the dusty carpets. When she finally reached the stairs that led upstairs she heard the wheels of a carriage begin running away from the manor. She quickly stopped and walked over to the main entrance door and tripped twice. She saw to her horror a black coach leaving the courtyard of the manor. It was not their coach, in which they arrived. It was a coach that belonged to the Hamlington Manor, once owed by Peter Hamlington and his family. Sister Rosemerta tried to run after it but it was impossible to catch up to a coach that was driven by two storng horses. She gave up and instead she ran into the mansion. She hurriedly ran up the stairs, her legs were shaking threatening to betray her any moment. She turned left and saw a figure dressed in a black priest's cassock. She quickly strode over to it and panted, "Father!! They...they managed...to...to get away..!!" Father Robert calmy turned around and looked into her eyes. His eyes were sad and pleading, "I know, Sister." He said, "We should go back now. They can't be caught anymore."
"But...Father...that girl--" Sister Rosemerta trailed off. Father Robert walked over to Sister Rosemerta and held her by her shoulders. "It's okay Sister. We don't need to worry anymore." At this both Father Robert and Sister Rosemerta walked out of the mansion and into their carriage, neither spoke on their way back. Father Robert, occasionally glanced at Sister Rosemerta expecting bursts of questions from her but now came, so he did not wish to push it.  He himself was tired and needed rest.
As they arrived at the convent both of them were about to retire to their rooms. Sister Rosemerta suddenly stopped, turned and asked Father. Father Robert waited as if expecting it, Sister Rosemerta opened her opened trying to figure out what she was going to her, unsure as to how to word her thoughts she ended up blurting out, "What happened?"
Father Robert gave a patient and pleading smile, "I will tell you everything, Sister but for now we must rest." Sister Rosemerta did not question somewhere she too agreed that whatever explaining was needed it could wait for tomorrow. She continued back to her dorm and so did Father. Both of them fell asleep as soon as they laid their heads on their pillow, neither dreamt of anything that had happened, it was very peaceful and calm that night as if nothing had happened at all.

Next morning

As Sister Rosemerta woke up next morning she washed herself and got ready like any usual morning. She then instead of heading down to the chapel to say her morning prayers she went straight to the other side of the convent, to Father Robert's room. She knocked on the door but she heard no answer. She thought that maybe Father was still asleep as she was about to turn she noticed that the door was open and slightly ajar. She opened the door full length and saw Father Robert kneeling and praying by the window like last time-- that was why he did not answer the knocks. Perhaps he knew that Sister Rosemerta might visit him in the morning and that was why he kept his door open.

Sister Rosemerta stood there for a while. After Father Robert finished praying he opened his eyes, and got up to his feet as he did the sign of the cross. "Good Morning, Sister" he said and gave her his usual fatherly smile. Sister Rosemerta did not stir nor did she answer. "I am guessing you are here to hear about last night's happenings?" He asked rethorically.
Sister Rosemerta, suddenly looked like a child hoping for answers form her parent. "Yes" she replied. Father nodded his head and looked at her, "Last night, I knew that Carol had been lying to us. She never killed Sister Lucia---" he paused to let it sink in but Sister Rosemerta in her stoic yet sad expression replied, "Yes, I know. Lucia...killed herself." Father Robert who was looking at her with a clear expression all this while was suddenly softened by these words he waited for her to say futher, "I was blinded but sisterly love and shame. I refused to accept that Lucia would do such a thing. Instead I blamed...Carol for it." She uttered the name with a certain displeasure.  She stood there looking outside the window onto the still lake. Father Robert then spoke, "Well, that's one part of the truth. Carol, was an upset child. Sje never knew the love of her parents. She seeked for it in other people but they were scared of her, so much so that they betrayed her everytime. But Sister Lucia managed not to fear her but love her. It was Lucia who showed Carol what love really is but she made a mistake." Father stopped hoping Sister Rosemerta would say someting but she did not, so he continued, "she could not bear the loss and tried to bring her back in the process Sister Tina happened to know her real nature by mistake. Sister Tina had pity for the young girls who was almpst her age. She was training to become a sister I believe?" Father asked. Sister Rosemerta nodded in reply. Father then continued, "they fell in love you see. It was hard for both of them since they never felt that way but somehow they were their true selves when they were with each other. Last night when Carol told me the truth I decided that she deserved to have her own life. She was vengeful but love had managed to change her make her more human than she ever was. I, then let her go." Sister Rosemerta looked at Father this time and said, "And Tina?"
"Her too. They left together. They will stay, I believe in the Enchanted Forest where the Enchantress lived. She was Carol's godmother you see. Carol tried her best to throw me off my feet many times but failed. I believe she just wanted a chance to be treated like a human and she definitely felt human when she was with sister Tina."

Sister Rosemerta seemed to hear that and make nothing of it, she then said, "Lucia was my cousin sister. We were like twins, she was a dreamy girl. She married early, all she ever wanted was a happy family." Sister Rosemerta paused and a teared ran down her cheek, "She had a son and a daughter both of them died in an accident alog with her husband. Only she lived. My sister was crestfallen. She starved herself, she was..." Sister Rosemerta chocked, "she was absolutely broken. Had lost the life in her. I could not bear to ses her like that. It was then that I suggested that she should become a nun and live in the convent with me. It would do her good. It did, until Carol came along. I thought maybe she would like teaching her, they began spending an awful lot of time together. I never suspected anything I thought they had an innocent teacher-student relationship and Lucia was indeed very fond of Carol. It was the night before she died thay she left me a letter near my door, writing to me the whole truth about her relationship with Carol. I did not wish to believe her I immediately went to talk to her the morning I found the letter but..." Sister Rosemerta let out a painful gasp and whispered, "I was late.....I had lost my only Sister. I also recieved a letter from Amy, Carol's caretaker, telling me the truth about her. I did not wish to believe it either but that night when I saw her in the graveyard. I knew for sure. I hated that girl. I loathed her for taking my sister away from me." She wiped her eyes and got herself together and said in a much more calmer voice, "I also began suspecting Tina. She began taking her lunch and dinner to her room and did not come back for long. I never said anything fearing that we might lose Tina too if the truth came out. So that was when I wrote to the Vatican seeking help and they send you. I am glad they did. No one other than you could have helped us figure out this situation." She finally finished and let out a quivering sign. There was a moment of silence between the two, finally Father Robert said after a while, "I am glad you forgave Carol."

Sister Rosemerta looked down at her feet and said, "Love will heal you say Father. I know the power of love and I know she will never bother the villagers. It was hard but no matter what I will keep an eye on them." Her voice was full of determination. She trusted Father Robert and knew Tina all to well to know she was harmless ans that she and Carol were truly in love.
Father Robert chuckled and said, "That you should Sister, but I believe you won't be needing it." As Sister gave one last look at him she turned about to leave, but something made her stop in her tracks she then again turned and looked at the priest who packing his bags, "Will you be leaving soon, Father?" She asked. Father Robert looked up a little surprised and answered, "Well yes. I believe my work here is done."
"I have a small request." She said hesitantly. Father waited for her to speak wondering what else would she have him do.
"Will you hear my confession?" She asked. Father Robert let out a sigh, smile softly and replied, "Sure, Sister."
