Chapter three
My whole body shook uncontrollably. If it weren't for Mason, I could've died. Everyone crowded me as Mason got up. The car stopped and the driver got out. I sat up with Melody and Jane hoisting me up. My knees buckled out but they caught me. I was both drunk and shaken from what happened.
"Are you okay? I thought you'd move but you were tripping. I'm so sorry," the driver apologized. I couldn't understand what they were saying to the driver as my mind went fuzzy and felt dizzy. I gripped my head. Soon enough, I vomited right then and there.
I couldn't remember what happened next, but somehow we were in the middle of the city, then we were back at Kristy's. I layed in her guest room. Awaking from my deep slumber, I scan the room. Hearing faint voices downstairs, I get up slowly holding my head. Not needing to vomit was a good thing, getting up from bed looking at myself in the mirror. I looked like a hobo. my hair is messed in knots. Heading downstairs, I patted my hair down then came into view as Mason, Kristy and Hudson talked while I smelled bacon and eggs.
"Hey drunk girl." Kristy's enthusiastic personality lit up the room. The sun shone in through the windows, letting the rays of sunlight smack me in the face, blinding me in the process.
"How are you feeling this morning?"
"Horrible."
"Well that's great. Breakfast will be ready soon."
I stood beside Mason whispering a thanks at him. "For what?"
"For saving me last night. I could've died if it wasn't for you to come after me."
"It's no problem." He took a sip of water. Hudson and Kristy left to get some plates from downstairs. Silence roamed over us.
"So, tell me about yourself." I nudged him in the arm. He just stared at me with a blank eye. "Do you ever talk?"
"To the people I know."
"Okay, talk with me here. I want to know more about you. All I know is that you've got a creepy friend and that you don't talk very much."
"That's great." Mason took another drink. "Alright, let's play the guessing game. You look at me or give a signal when I get it right. Okay?"
He didn't budge. "Okay here we go. Do you like sports?" he didn't move. "Do you like scary things?"
He kind of glanced at me before moving his posture. "Hey look, we've got something in common already."
"That's nice."
"Okay, some time today, we need to do something scary. All seven of us."
"Okay."
"You don't talk and you worry about others. You seem like a nice kid."
"I'm not who you think I am."
"Right. I just want to know, tell me something, anything," I demanded.
Just then, the other two came back along with Jane, Melody, and Justin. Setting the table, Kristy set out the food in bowls and plates as we dished ourselves sitting at the table. Eating away we planned our day. "My parents are away this weekend." I told them.
"Perfect, so you can stay for a long time." Justin replied.
"What do y'all want to do to pass the time?" Kristy asked.
"We could play the picture game. I've always wanted to try that." Melody replied. Everyone hollard. After breakfast, we cleaned up, then read on the internet on how to play. Jane read the instructions as we sat in the circle. "Can someone go get a small mirror, another person grabs some string, I'll grab the scissors and glass as someone else grabs a camera, it won't work for the phone."
Jane, Melody, Hudson and Kristy went to get the stuff. Justin, Mason and I stayed behind in the kitchen. Once they were back, we set up the glass with alcohol in it in the center, circling the rope around us sitting on the outside of the rope. We placed the mirrors facing the ceiling. After that I turned off the lights and we linked hands and we each said at a time, "I trust you." until Jane was the last person who said it. Then we said "the door is open, please come in." three times. We opened our eyes. Melody started with the camera saying, "I caught you," and passed it on to Justin. Once it ended at Mason, it went around three more times.
After, we said "It is time to go home," three times without closing our eyes. We turned our mirror face down and Hudson cut the rope once Kristy turned on the lights. Jane took the alcohol and dumped it in the dirt, returning in excitement. We viewed the pictures. Some had a white figure as others didn't.
"That was amazing!" Melody squeaked. Deleting the photos, we went outside into the back yard. Sitting out back relaxing Hudson and Mason went home. Sitting out in the sun, we talked and talked and talked. Living our life as we can before the winter comes. Soon enough, I had to get home to do chores and take care of the house. Entering the quiet house, I do my homework, then watch tv afterwards. With nothing else to do, I watch tv and read horror stories on the network. One caught my eye.
"A teen girl disappeared in 1972, last seen by her friends. They were playing paranormal games for fun. On halloween night, she went to play with the devil. It went well, asking the devil questions and talking to him.
As the devil answered, she wanted a truthful answer. To do that, she needs to accept a dare from him. She knew she wasn't supposed to accept a dare from him, but she went ahead and did it anyway.
She accepted the dare from the devil. The next day the teen girl went missing. No one knew where she went. The police say that the girl went for a walk and got kidnapped. People say she made the deal with the devil and he came up and killed her.
Others say that the deal was to kill herself. To this day, no one knows what happened as the case went cold over time."
The poor girl. Her family must have been horrified. I continued reading scary legends and real stories that happened. It took me to lunch, as I ate a salad. I kept reading until I got bored. Switching off the site, I turned the tv on to the news. Nothing much is interesting these days as it's just murderers, robberies, kidnappers, local health news. Turning off the tv, I sat there in silence. My phone dinged
Checking the text, Kristy said that she gave Mason my address. Few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Getting up I opened the door to see Mason standing there.
"Hi, sorry I wasn't talkative earlier and yesterday. I never like to talk to people when there's a lot of people around. Insecurities of mine."
"That's okay, I get it. Want to come in?" I open the door wide for him to step in. I shut the door behind him welcoming him into my home. "What have you been up to?" he asked.
"Nothing much, just reading horror stories and legends and listening to the boring news, and finishing my homework."
"I haven't caught your name."
"Hailey."
"Nice to meet you, Hailey." sticking out his hand, I shook it. "Do you want anything?" I walk into the house as he follows me. "Water, please."
Grabbing out two glasses each filling with water and ice, passing one to Mason. "Thanks."
"So tell me, why don't you like to talk in front of groups?"
"Insecurities. I've always had insecurities. When it comes to talking to large groups, I get nervous, I don't like the attention. Small groups up to four people, including me, are fine. Anymore then I go silent. It's just something I have."
"I get it."
"And I see that last night, you love getting drunk?"
"Not always, usually I'm sober when it comes to drinking, I only take three shots, sometimes four, not seven."
"Oh?"
"Yeah oh."
"Where are your parents?"
"Gone for the weekend."
"That's nice, have the whole house to yourself."
"It is nice."
Taking a sip of water, silence lingered. "Do you like paranormal games?" he asked.
"Love them."
"Do you want to do one?"
"Now?" He nodded. "Sure."
"Want to play Charlie, Charlie since we'll need the others?" he suggested.
"Sure." I grabbed a piece of paper and two pencils, Mason setting the game up. Ready, we started playing. "Charlie, Charlie are you there?" Mason asked. Waiting a few seconds, the pencil moved to yes. I asked the first question. "Is it really you?"
Awaiting, the pencil moved a bit then back to yes. I've played so many paranormal games that this doesn't freak me out, as for Mason, based on his expressions, he doesn't seem to be creeped out either. "Do you know anyone outside my family?" he asked. That question shocked me, but who cares? The pencil moved to no. My turn.
"Have people in the past forgotten to say goodbye?"
The pencil moved to no once again. "Do you know my dad?" Mason asked.
Without a second to spare, the pencil moved to yes. That's creepy. I looked at Mason as he connected eyes with mine. Asking questions back and forth, my phone rang. I answered Kristy on the other end. She needed my assistance, as Mason got a call, assuming from Hudson.
"have to go, Kristy needs me."
"Same. But not with Kristy."
We rushed out of the house as we said our goodbyes.
Completely forgetting to say goodbye to Charlie.
