Chapter five

Laying in bed that night, I stared at the ceiling thinking about what happened with me and Kristy. As it's too quiet, I put on soft music in a hush tone. Falling asleep really fast, I shut my eyes and fell into a deep sleep. Letting the music fade into my mind, all the thoughts and events getting washed away from my brain.

Waking up in the night surprisingly hearing something crash. Checking the time on my phone, quarter past two in the morning. Sitting up straight in bed, I scan the dark room before turning on the flashlight on my phone. Waving the light around, I saw nothing out of the ordinary.

My imagination is getting out of hand.

Falling back to sleep, I shut my eyes for a long period of time before going back to sleep. Opening my eyes again, I spot a figure standing by my doorway. I shot up in fright, clenching my teeth. Bright red, glowing eyes stared back at me. I screamed in fright but the figure didn't leave. Reaching for my phone, I struggled to find it on my night stand.

I would get up and flick the light on, but the figure is standing right by it.

I screamed as I scourged through the dark finding my phone. I locked gazes with the figure trying to rip away from its gaze. Finding my phone, I quickly switch on the flashlight revealing nothing.

No figure.

No eyes.

Just thin air.

My pulse raced as my heart pounded. What I witnessed terrified me for the rest of the night, not getting enough sleep. The next morning I lay awake as my alarm went off.

I was so tired that I fell asleep instantly with no interruptions.

Waking up, hours later, learning to find that it's past noon. After the encounter with whatever was in my room last night, it's gone as my heart and pulse is still drumming. I don't know how to tell my friends this.

So I won't.

Sitting up in my warm, cozy bed, yawning.

Finally after a couple minutes of sitting and waking up, I go to the washroom getting ready. Going upstairs once done, I fish out the yogurt, fruit, and granola to eat. Bringing the TV to life, I switched channels until I couldn't find anything. Instead, I switch Youtube on and watch whatever I find interesting on TV.

Dishing myself up I walk to the couch resting my legs on the coffee table. Chomping away, I watch Dance Moms clips. Not paying too much attention I think back to what happened last night that I wasn't dreaming. Those bloody red eyes staring back at me. Shivers crawled down my spine.

I placed the dishes in the dishwasher and walked back to the couch. Laying on the couch watching I heard a crash coming from upstairs.

Booking it up to the bonus room a vase of my mothers' has been smashed on the floor all broken into pieces. Covering my mouth in shock.

My mom's favourite vase is smashed into little bits.

Cleaning it up furiously as curiosity roams over me.

How did the vase smash?

"Was it close to the edge or something?" I asked under my breath.

I swept up the small bits and threw them away in the trash. Walking back downstairs the TV played a clip where Cathy whipped the purse at Abby Lee Miller. As my heart drummed in my chest I slumped on the couch. As tired as can be.

I still can't get over the figure that magically appeared in my room and disappeared like nothing happened. Just thinking about it made my body shake non stop. Resting my hands on my lap I continue watching. I'm still shaking uncontrollably.

Taking deep breaths finally calm myself down.

My phone dinged as I reached out for it. Jane texted as I'm relieved. I replied instantly yet I don't dare tell her my experience last night afraid that she won't believe me. With a part of her presence around mentally, I felt safe. As I watched the tv and texted Jane and Kristy called, answering quickly.

"Hey girl, what's happening?" I said.

"Nothing much and you?"

"Just watching dance moms."

"Sounds fun."

"Yeah, very fun. Hey, do you remember when you saw a figure yesterday in your home as you were cleaning up?"

"Yeah, I haven't seen anything since if that's what you're asking."

"Okay that's good, but can I trust you, as in don't tell a single soul?"

"Yeah you can trust me."

I thought long and hard before spilling the tea. I told her about yesterday after getting home to the experience of last night, all in detail. After telling the horrific story, I could see her expression in my mind. Her shocked face with her mouth wide open, eyes popping out of their sockets all speechless. All her colour drained from her face.

"I . . . I . .. I'm speechless."

"Same, but try experiencing this and not knowing what to do?"

I choked out laughter along with Kristy.

After, we talked about school related things and talked behind people's backs. Mostly the nerds or the bad kids. I loved to gossip and spill some tea to my friends. Halfway through the call, something crashed behind me. Jolting upright, I scanned the room pausing the tv. I hushed Kristy on the other line and listened. Eventually, I got up from the couch and walked over the house whispering to Kristy on the phone.

I couldn't find anything that fell.

"Hey, I'm going to have to call you back  later," I say clicking off without her speaking a word. I got into the car driving to Tim Hortons calling Jane.

"Hey, mind if I come over to your place?"

"No, not at all."

I connected the phone call on bluetooth. I drove down the main road to Timmy's and went inside. With the money I had and my phone in my ear, I waited in the long line.

Talking to Jane on the phone.

"Okay I'm in Timmy's in line. What would you like?" Giving me her order was my turn. They took my order and I waited playing on my phone. They called my name and I took the order and left.

Driving through the neighborhood, I stopped on the driveway and went up to the door ringing the doorbell. She opened the door as I stepped in giving her the meal she wanted. I took my coffee and we sat on the couch talking. She ate her Mcmuffin as I drank my iced coffee.

"Thanks."

"Your welcome."

We sat talking about the day and how it may go, school as in our options. Later, we went into her room on her computer watching and reading horror and paranormal stuff that we love. Reading each section of the story, the doorbell rang. I waited in her room as she went to answer the door. Hearing faint voices downstairs, I heard footsteps coming upstairs.

Not one but two pairs of footsteps. The door opened and in came Jane with Justin.

"Hey, Justin."

"Hey, Hailey."

He sat down beside me in a chair that he pulled up. Jane sat on the other side of me. I felt a bit awkward as I know he has a massive crush on me and I only want to be friends, but I can deal with it. We read the story out loud and experienced the true horror. As Jane read, I felt Justin's leg brush up against mine. I moved over a bit away from him.

He knew that I only liked him as a friend and nothing more.

Justin couldn't see so being him, he scratched further in me.

Feeling his breathing on my neck, I relaxed a bit. "I'll be right back." Jane replied, getting up. Watching her walk into the bathroom, I turned to Justin.

"So . . . what brings you here?" I ask.

"Seeing what Jane was up to. When I spotted your car I figured that you two were up to something."

"Huh."

"Yeah."

Sitting in silence, Justin turned to me, saying, "umm, Hailey? I need to talk to you."

"What is it?"

"You know I have a massive crush on you and I can't deny that. I know that you only like me as a friend and you can't deny that . . . why don't we give it a try and see what happens?"

"Justin. I don't like you in that way, nor do I want to give it a try. No offense, but I think it's very awkward for the both of us."

I could see the hurt and pain that I caused on his face. But I saved us both from embarrassment. "Look . . ." I say resting my hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure someone out there is willing to be with you." I assured him.

"Yeah . . . you're right."

Disappointment crossed his face. I felt bad so I gave him a hug to comfort him. When I pulled back, his sandy blonde hair covered his blue eyes. Brushing them to one side, I smiled at him and he smiled back.

Jane came back.

"What have you two been up to?" she asked sitting in the seat.

"Nothing, just talking." Justin defended.

"Okay then."

We went back to reading the horror on the internet. Especially the creepypasta.

We had lunch on the deck talking away. Enjoying the sun although it was a bit cool. Setting our plates aside, we played Kiss, Kill, Marry.

"Alright, Justin. Who would you kiss, kill or marry? Kristy, Hailey, or Cora?" Jane asked.

He thought long and hard. "I would kiss Hailey, marry Kristy and kill Cora."

"Interesting."

It was my turn to be asked. Justin gave me three guys. Mason, Hudson, and Jake. "Killing Hudson 'cause he's very annoying. Kiss Justin and marry Mason."

Fooling around, we moved to the grass.

Moving inside after an hour outside, we watched tv and talked. It was a great way to spend a Sunday. I don't have to worry about anything. I completely forgot about what happened last night until my mind came racing back. Although Justin is one of my closest friends, I wouldn't dare tell him about my experience last night. The bloody red eyes staring back at me cruelly.

I will never forget.
