Prologue

🎼There were two kinds of angels in this world. The simplest terms for them were Dark and Light.

Dark angels with their razor-sharp black wings were easily accused as demonic beings from the filthy pits of hell. While Light angels with their fluffy white wings belonged far up as beacons of heavens light. Complete opposites they were and always would always be according to a religious text. The guardians for our rise or downfall, to be respected or avoided but neither side - the Light or the Dark cared about the lives of humans. Nor did they have anything to do with the matters of their afterlife, they had their own to worry about.

The humans were right about one thing. These beings were opposites and were entangled into each other's lives in the most violent ways.

But what would happen if a dark angel and a light angel came to an understanding, and worse began to fall in love?

Worse than that! In times of war and famine in their otherworld, what if an infant was born into it?  A baby who was sentenced to death before it could open its eyes to the sun.

Dara flew down from the sky clutching her young one in her arms. Eyes scouting for her lover while fretting and flooded with worry. They had been caught by a guardian, and not just any angel.  One of her most trusted friends who instantly betrayed her the moment the baby was made known to him. He remembered those cold eyes, all warmth bled from him as he angrily swung at her.  She had escaped him and the others and found a portal to the earth realm where she knew she could hide their baby.

"William where are you?" She said to herself. She fell on a tree branch cuddling little the bundle in her arms. The little one slept peacefully not realising the great danger she was in.

"Dara!" William called out landing next to her. He kissed her hard on the mouth because he feared this would be the last time he ever saw her again. Dara pushed him back and the baby started crying. William looked into the baby's black eyes and couldn't help but smile, even under the stress of escape. He felt this warmth spread from his heart, a similar feeling he got when he first saw Dara singing by a river.  He shook away the memory and concentrated on his weeping baby.

"We have to get her to stop crying," Dara said her brow furrowed. William displayed one of those little maracas for her to hold. It was black with a skull on the end that has little rubies for eyes. Dara gave him a pointed look. "You are not serious." She said. But the baby took it from his grasp and played with it smiling her toothless grin. Dara shrugged.

"That's my girl." He whispered and tapped her nose. If only they could stay like this for a moment longer. The pleasantries were cut short as he heard the screeching of the harpies come their way from the portal. They had the same sharp charcoal wings as him, these monsters were once like him but now deformed to be used as killers.

The couple flew as fast as they could until they reached the city, Dara muttered a spell to herself to keep them invisible but humans still cried out at the sight of the metallic humanoid birds squealing at the sky. One harpy clawed into Dara's leg, William bit back at the harpy, baring long canines and kicking it back at the other two. Dara had screamed in pain causing the baby to scream in reply. Dara kept flying, as William used the environment around him to throw objects and create obstacles for the monsters. He tore out some of his own sharpened feathers to throw like flying knives. The baby kept crying and soon a purple light shone around her, expanding from her face through the blanket, moving like ripples in water, it spread out and ignited the harpies until they fell like dust in the wind.

"How did she do that?" William said.

"I... I don't know." Dara said, both of them staring into the sleepy face of their baby. They kept flying until they reached the adoption centre. There was a sun painted on it and little pink flowers painted on the door. Dara pulled a basket out of thin air, another spell she had muttered to herself and placed the baby in it. Tears were already threatening to break her nonchalant expression.

"I love you little one and if it was my choice I would never let you go." She said. Then placed a silver locket next to her and the baby, with her little hands the weight of petals, gripped her mother's thumb. That was all Dara needed to burst into tears. William held Dara's other hand and took her away from the child.

"We must leave now." He whispered in her ear. Dara would normally never hesitate on doing what's right, froze, every instinct in her screaming to find somewhere else. Find where she could be here, living with the baby, even if William didn't want to stay.  Dara gripped firmly onto William's arm tears streaming down her face. William knew what would happen now but kept strong. Usually, he'd run away after causing the trouble but now there was no more running, and there was nowhere else to go. His kind would find him. They would have to create some form of punishment for a new crime never before committed.
