🎼"Concentrate Angelica! Stop playing around and play properly," said my snotty violin teacher. Bloody old crow. She looked like one too, with tiny beady eyes, a wrinkled up face and a pointed nose where her round spectacles rested perfectly. So I started again with the same song that I had been practising forever.
"Can I please play something new?" I begged and she gave me a stern look, "you'll play something new once you perfect Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart," she said, doubting my skills as a musician. Miss Wig often spoke so brazenly while my parents were in the next room, dad had hired her, because of course he did, and she's disliked me ever since.
"Prepare to be amazed." Bitch. I took a few deep breaths and pictured myself alone in a peaceful quiet forest. With animals asleep around me as the sun slowly rose from the mountains. I had played this song so many times that I had it memorised, no, burned into my brain that I had a special place in my mind that would I perform on. A place with eternal Spring. The birds woke everyone up with their sweet melodies, flowers sprouted threatening to bloom. The sky was a mass expanse of colour as dawn broke in, turning from purple to gleams of pink and orange. I had performed this song so many times that the world was starting to look the same when I pictured it. The only alterations being who entered this forest with me.
"That's enough, Angelica." The snotty bitch interrupted.
"No no keep playing!" I heard my mother squeal. Miss Wig jumped at the sound of her voice and turned around to see my mother beaming at me before she gave a deadly look to my violin teacher.
Ha-ha!
"Can I just go to bed now? I have school tomorrow," I said, and my mother nodded disappointedly.
"Alright, Miss Wig you may go now," She all but growled. You'd never want to get on her bad side which was where my dad was heading once one of us had the courage to tell her what was going on. I packed away my violin and leisurely walked down the hallway listening to my mother mutter something to my teacher. I didn't quite catch it and didn't bother to linger around to find out. I finally reached the stairs but noticed something through the glass doors leading out to the backyard.
Was that? Oh my god, it was a cat!
A black cat with shiny purple eyes. A very skinny, actually bony cat. I put the violin case down on the floor and opened the door to welcome it in. Curiously, it remained seated there staring up at me with its tail swishing from side to side.
"You can come in," I said and immediately felt silly. It licked its lips and walked in. A well-mannered cat? Very interesting. "I'll get you some milk but if it's possible try and make sure no one sees you." It stared up at me and licked its lips again. I laughed at myself and walked down the hall to the kitchen, the cat following me quietly, except for its claws tapping against the floor. I opened the fridge got out a bowl and poured the milk in. I put the bowl on the floor and jumped when I heard someone's voice.
"Angelica what are you doing?" my father asked. I looked at him and saw he was dressed to leave.
"I'm hungry, where are you going?" I asked coldly and searched the room for the cat who had disappeared. Uh oh, where did it go?
"Out for work. Just mess up of forms, I'll be back later," he said wrapping his scarf around his neck.
"It's eight o'clock. Surely your assistant can fix that on her own, or are clueless women your type?" he stiffened and gave me a blank look.
"What are you talking about?"
"You tell me, dad. What is it like coming home pretending to care about us? Acting as if you were ever a loving dad." My voice broke at the end and I felt tears brewing.
"Now wait a minute, young lady, you don't know what you're talking about," he said but I just laughed at him.
"I saw you with her dad! Today at the cafe!"
"Shh, I can explain Angie- wait shouldn't you have been at school?"
"That doesn't change the fact that you're cheating" And then it hit me. "Are you guys getting a divorce?"
"What? No!" he walked over towards me but I backed around the bench keeping it between us.
"Then what's your excuse?" I said my voice sounding foreign even to me.
"Don't you talk to me like that!" He ordered.
"Or what? You're not exactly in a position to be threatening me."
"I'm not threatening you. Listen how about you go to bed now and forget about this and tomorrow you and I can cancel work and school and go where ever you want." Pathetic.
"What is wrong with you?" he stayed silent looking away in shame then he turned angry, "you're a sad excuse for a man Robert." That cracked him, he slammed his fist onto the island bench and stormed towards me. But the cat came out of nowhere and hissed at him making him jump back in surprise. I stared at him in terror.
"What exactly were you about to do?" I said. His expression turned to horror but he stayed silent and looked away from me. My mother couldn't have come at a worse moment.
"What is going on?" she questioned. Neither dad nor I looked at her.
"I hate you!" I yelled out before I ran out of the kitchen. I had never said anything like that to anyone and now I know why. My heart was breaking and the tears were finally slipping down my face. I pushed the back door open and ran outside in the cold air. It's too late to be out and about and I couldn't think of anywhere I could go. Except for Henry house?
"Meow." I turned around to see the black cat who gazed up at me its head angled to the side.
"Thank you," I sobbed to it. It meowed again and rubbed up against my legs. "Can you take me somewhere? Away from here?" I asked. It stared up at me and blinked. "I'm so stupid." I cried even more. I felt like my life was in ruins and now I was talking to a stray cat as if it understood me.
"Meow."
It ran off and then stood at the edge of the garden its back facing me. It was like he was waiting for me to come to him. At least I thought it was a he. He turned his head around and looked at me. He meowed again then ran off into the darkness.
Despite all good judgement, I followed it.
"Angie where are you? Get back inside!" I heard my mother yell but I was already far ahead running around the house to the front gates. I listened out for the distant meows and climbed over the gates and lept down to the other side. I tried not to think too hard, avoided being self-aware of how reckless this was. I wanted to believe that this cat had somewhere it needed to be and that it was inviting me along. Okay, that was a lie I just wanted to stay away from that house for as long as possible.
Once I reached around the corner of the street I was officially in civilisation. It was really late and I shouldn't have expected anyone to be up but there was this loud music coming from one of the houses. It had people, college students and high schoolers above my year level roving in and out of it. Who's out on a Monday? Who has a party on a weeknight? Did the cat want to take me to this party? Okay, now I really was just being stupid. The cat just ran off probably to catch a mouse and I was dull enough to follow it. I mentally scolded myself and tried to think of a place to go to other than home.
"Now what is the little rich girl doing out so late?" a young boy's voice called out. You've got to joking.
"Leave me alone Blaz I'm not in the mood." I quickly turned to avoid meeting his gaze, afraid I was going to burst into either sadness or anger and he didn't need to see either side of that.
"It's a simple question, Angelica." I hated the way he said my name. It was like he turned it into a weapon that he could beat me with.
"Yes, it is. I guess I could ask you the same thing." I said facing him. Realising that trying to get him off your trail was not going to be an easy feat. He had this evil grin that looked really weird on his young face. Like he knew something that I didn't. Just the sloppy grin of a smart-arse.
"I'm here at a party now you answer my question." I was about to tell him to piss off when I saw the cat up in a tree looking down at me.
"I'm looking for my cat," I said and he raised an eyebrow.
"It's midnight your cat is probably out chasing a mouse," he said and I swear that cat was glaring at him. A very smart cat indeed.
"Excuse me for being worried. In the chance that you do see a black cat with purplish eyes, I must warn you - keep your distance," He leaned in forward, a curious expression on his face.
"Why?"
"He doesn't like arseholes." I grinned mischievously and the cat pounced on top of Blaz. He screamed, bellowed in fright and the cat hissed before running off. I held my stomach to contain my laughter. "Oh, there he is, as much as I would love to stay and chat..." I looked at where the cat ran and he appeared again to meow at me. As if he were scolding me for taking so long. "I have to go."
I ran towards the cat and we left a confused Blaz behind.
I love this cat but I wish I knew where he was taking me. I probably looked like some freak or possibly an old crazy cat lady, you know with my white hair and all. But I felt this rush go through me and I could feel as if I could fly. My feet lightly padding the hard cold cement while the cat would run ahead rushing across streets. Sometimes it would sit there to make sure I was following then run again. This is all insane but anyone would have to admit that this was pretty exciting. We finally ended up stopping at the local park. I hadn't been there in years not since that incident that no one but myself could seem to remember! But, I remember everything. I also remember the forest being much bigger than that but I suppose when you're young you see things differently.
"Meow."
"Yes, I'm coming!" I followed its yowling and ended up in the park's little forest. It was too dark to see anything, having the moon as my only light source and it was in the dimmer phases of its cycle.
"Why did you bring me here?" I said. I realised the cat was gone. And this time I mean it he was nowhere to be seen. What could I do now? I didn't want to go home yet. The only reasonable choice was to continue walking through the tall trees full of lush leaves painted a dark turquoise under the night. I should be feeling scared right but I'm feeling...
Nothing.
I've finally gone numb.
I kept on walking until I found the same little clearing where I saw William, the black-winged angel. This was the exact spot on which I met him. I sat crossed-legged on the ground and rested my head on my hand. I felt so empty and lost. Too much was happening at once, I just wanted everything to freeze so could think.
I was drawn out of my thoughts when I heard a whoosh sound coming from up above. There was nothing there but then I heard the scurrying sounds and the rackets of twigs snapping. Out of the darkness, I could see this big shadow forming. Coming my way, heavily breathing. Now I was afraid. I had never known wild beasts to be in a parkland especially with a forest this small. I didn't know what it was but I did notice very suddenly that it wasn't alone...
