III

Elsie and Drifter were brought to a campsite and promptly separated from each other. Drifter was taken away while they wished to question Elsie. She sat there, next to a fire, on a stone bench, nervousness slowly taking over. A person walked over and sat across from her. Their face concealed behind a helmet, they wore strange military grade equipment. There was a moment of silence before the figure spoke up.

Figure: Who are you?

Elsie: My name is Elsie Bray.

Figure: Where do you come from and what is your relationship with the other subject that was with you?

Elsie: I-I come from Earth and he is a friend of mine.

He seemed confused at first, looking her up and down, taking in her appearance.

Figure: May I ask, what are you exactly? Corpus, Grineer, Sentient?

Elsie: N-no. I am, uhm, an Exo.

Figure: Exo? What is that exactly?

Elsie: We are, were humans whose mind had been uploaded into a robotic body.

He got up and walked over to her, grasping her chin and lifting it up. Moving her head from side to side, examining every detail, taking it all in. After a while he returned to his seat, crossing his legs.

Figure: I assume you are not from 'here'. You are a stranger, aren't you.

It took a moment to Elsie realize that he wasn't talking about the small picture, but the wider one. He figured out that she isn't from this world originally.

Elsie: That is true. I come from a different dimension.

Figure: Tell me how you got here?

Elsie: Well, it all started when we encountered a strange looking creature, they head some sort of spear that could shoot and looked really strange. Even used chains to subdue us. From there, Drifter was obsessed on finding out more, so we searched until we came across a mall that appeared to be completely intact despite everything around being destroyed.

Figure: Did that figure by any chance have a exposed ribcage, a strange looking head?

Elsie: Yes. Why do you ask?

Figure: Nothing, just asking. What did you see in that mall?

Elsie: A crack in the time and space itself, there appeared to have been corruption from that thing. We jumped in and found ourselves in a strange realm that made my skin crawl and we quickly got out of there.

The figure murmurs something beneath their breath, too quiet to realize what they had said. They ask a couple more questions but then clap, signaling the end. The rhino one comes over and picks her up by the arm and walks her away towards the sitting vessel. It's size is incredible but then spots the strange crowned female one escorting Drifter. They only pass by each other, not being able to utter a single word. She is taken into what appear to be living quarters with strange statues that appear to be made out of gold which defies any sort of law. It bends and changes shape. There are posters and other things in it. Drifter is seated where Elsie sat, the person in front of him looked him up and down. Taking in both his appearance and scanning his worn out face.

Figure: So, you must be Drifter?

Drifter: That is right.

Figure: Are you a human? She was something called an Exo.

Drifter: Well, sort of. A human I am, but not a normal one.

Figure: Clarify.

He person seems intrigued so Drifter decides to play that to his advantage.

Drifter: How about a deal?

Figure: What kind of deal?

Drifter: I tell you what I am and in return, you tell me who you are and what you are.

Figure: You know we can simply kill you or even posses your mind and get the info out of you. At the same time, we could 'question' your friend some more.

Drifter: But I know you won't do that.

The person stares at him, but then starts laughing.

Figure: Hahaha, you are an interesting person, Drifter. Alright then, deal. Tell me and I tell you.

Drifter: How about the other way around.

Janus: Alright, my name is Janus.

He takes off his helmet, revealing a young looking man.

Janus: And I am what we call, a Tenno. Or how others call us, a devil. Now, you.

Drifter is taken aback, he didn't expect this, not in a million years.

Drifter: Well then. I am a human, but a specific kind. We are called Guardians, Lightbearers. We are sword protectors of humanity and our allies.

Janus: Lightbeares? I assume this 'Light' is the source of your power?

Drifter: Well, yes, up until recently it was considered the only source. It was bestowed to us by the Traveler, a Godlike being. We are revived by him using something called a Ghost.

Janus: What do you mean until recently?

Drifter: Well, some discovered Stasis and other Darkness powers that we could use. So no longer were we just Lightbeares.

Janus: You said about being revived? To become a Guardian, must you die first?

Drifter: Well, yeah. You forget everything about your past life, name and other things. You become a completely new person.

Janus: Fascinating. These Ghosts you mentioned, what are they?

Drifter: If you tell me first what these strange warriors are behind you, then I will show you my Ghost.

Janus: These warriors aren't actually warriors. They are suits of war. Controlled by us, in a sense, we are their minds and they are our brawn.

Drifter: Controlled?

Janus: A-A-A. We told you what they are, nothing else. Now, tell us about those Ghosts that you mentioned.

Drifter chuckles, he already likes this Janus person. Precise and plays around with words. Drifter summons his Ghost, it manifesting out of thin air. Janus seems shocked for a moment but quickly recovers. Now, his eyes glued to the Ghost, intrigued to the fulles.

Janus: Fascinating. They look allot like our Deathcube Sentinel. But I am guessing that they are not as simple as a Deathcube.

Drifter: Now, I don't know what a Deathcube is but it sounds dangerous. But I am guessing not. They are fully sentient, able to talk to us and other things. They are our companions. Friends even.

Janus: Hmmm, interesting. Can you tell me, what is your world like?

Drifter: Not good, well better than it was not long ago. We are at a constant war with different factions. Nearly had it completely destroyed but now it is only small scale dangers. Yours?

Janus: Alright, there are dangers here and there. But mostly simply tasks, killing, rescuing people and sometimes saving the world, or multiple of them. Depends.

Drifter looks to his left, see the same foes he saw at that strange place on the moon. But there are also others.

Drifter: Aren't those guys the enemies?

Janus: Grineer? Well, yes, but that is our friend Kahl. He is really good and an ally of ours. You probably have some of your own.

Drifter: Yea, we do.

Janus: I do have to ask. You are not a an enemy of ours, are you?

Drifter: Well, not really. I mean, yeah, that strange fella with the spear killed me but that is pretty much it.

Janus slaps himself in the face, rubbing his forehead.

Janus: Don't worry, I will talk to him. I do apologies on the behalf of our friend. I am guessing your Ghost revived you.

Drifter: Yeah. And don't worry, I ain't mad. It only made me more intrigued. How did he summon chains from nowhere?

Janus: Each of these suits, called Warframes, posses powers of different capabilities. Each has a unique set. That is one of his. How do your powers function?

Drifter: Well, we are paracausal beings. Our powers simply skip the in-between and get straight to the point.

Janus: Interesting. Ours are different. It all depends on the Frame, but here is a example. There is one that controls magnetism and is capable of simply magnetizing the very bones of her enemies to crush them.

Drifter: Your powers, where do they come from? Ours from the Light and Darkness but yours don't appear to come from either.

Janus: They appear from the Void. It is both a gift and a curse. A power, will, existence that simply twists and perverts the laws of universe into it's image. Trying to explain it is nigh impossible as the very source of it's power is not explainable.

They talk for some more, getting to know each faction from  their respected world. At a point, Elsie joins them and she joins into the conversation, explaining her existence and the fact that she is a time traveler. However, this appears to not have made a impact on Janus as he simply nodded and glosses over it. Janus seems particularly interested in the world that is not their.

Drifter: Now, we would love to stay here longer, but we kind of need to head back. You know, there are people that might start to worry.

Janus: That is perfectly normal to expect. We will help you cross if that rift is there, if not, then you are stuck here for the meantime. Grab your things, we are going.

Elsie: Right now.

Janus: Yes.

He disappears before their eyes and soon, from the ship comes out a concrete looking strange Frame. It motions its head to them to get up. And so they follow it, it must be Janus, or at least Drifter has a gut feeling that that is the truth. They board the ships that took them here and fly off. Both Elsie and Drifter taking the time to examine the interior as they fly. It is incredibly sophisticated and pretty. As they reach the moon they land and are escorted to the location where they originally entered. Along the way they come across a lot of enemies but watching these things murder them all. They do come across a completely new enemy, they are thin, red and dirty red. They make this strange sound but stand no chance as they are killed nonetheless. Passing by the many familiar rooms, however, the Guardians also help out. Shooting a couple and showing off their powers. The Tenno appear to be fascinated by such powers, observing them. And soon they reach the room and to their luck, the rift had once again emerged. It's energy flowing out, the so called Void energy. Janus appears again, stepping forward as the might Frame slumps.

Janus: I must say, you are a lucky person Drifter.

Drifter: I guess I am. The time we wanted to escape, it wasn't there.

As they are about to step inside they hear a clearing of the throat and look back and notice Janus slowly walking towards them.

Janus: I do have a request-

Drifter: Which one?

Janus: May I join you? I am so interested in seeing your world.

Drifter takes a moment to think.

Drifter: Sure. You can tag along, but only you. We can't have too many people as that will raise suspicion.

Elsie: Are you sure that this is a smart thing to do?

Drifter: Smart, probably no. But why not. If he promises that he won't show off his frame then it is all fine by me. Can you promise me that Janus?

Janus: I can. Is there a way to hide it.

Drifter: Oh don't worry about that. There are plenty places to hide it.

Elsie shakes her head and Janus disappears again. The big concrete frame picks them up in it's arm and jumps through. It easily navigates the course that is laid out before them. Making it look like a simply play, the same course they suffered through it jumps, spin in the air. They finally reach the other side and step through. Once out, they find themselves in the mall, but now it is simply a ruined one. Overgrown, like all the other things are. If they are to keep this a secret, they will have to be careful, really careful.
