Chapter Nine
I would rather be a devil in alliance with truth, than an angel in alliance with falsehood.
-Ludwig Feuerbach
I cross my arms defiantly over my chest, staring at Julian as he gets down onto his knees and starts to beg me.
We just arrived at the carnival and this is what I have to deal with.
Stupid teenagers.
Bah.
"Please, please, please go on the rides this year. You have your Devil this year! It would be so much fun instead of walking around only going on the boring ones. Please, please." He begs me.
"You're such a asshole," I mutter, caving as I see his quivering bottom lip. "Fine! Just stop looking at me like that." With a split second mischievous smirk he continues to pout, this time adding fake tears.
My heart clenches at this but I don't fall for it, instead I flick his nose and nudge his thigh with my shoe. "Get up, dipshit. I already agreed." Instead of doing that he tugs me closer by my wrists, making my black drawstring travel down my shoulder. "Stop it."
Xavier steps beside me, easily tearing me from his grip. "I will punch you."
At this Julian scrambles to his feet, grinning smugly at me. I raise a single finger at him but it does nothing to discourage the wide grin.
"What ride first?" Jessamine asks, holding hands with Cal.
I would do the same with Xavier but his hands are clamped around my lower ribs as he stands behind me.
I'm thankful for the contact.
"That one!" Jules points to a giant machine that has seats like human size paper airplanes. We're supposed to lay on our stomach next to someone. I gulp, realizing how high it goes and take a step back.
"It's okay, they're designed to be safe. Nothing will happen to you." Xavier whispers in my ear, giving my body a squeeze. "I promise."
Relaxing against his chest I nod, making him stand to his full height -which his around a foot and then some above my head.
I huff as I realize this once again, causing him to smirk down at me with invigoratingly sharp teeth.
"Lets go," Jessie says.
Soon I'm rooted in place by the spots, Cal has already taken the spot next to us, Julian having snatched his sister.
"In you get Princess," Xavier says. My head snaps to him but his hands wrap around my waist and he's lifting me on the machine. "Stop squirming."
When he climbs in next to me I'm still sitting up. With a small glare he grabs my hip, twisting me around while I squeak and forcing me to lay down.
Glaring back at him I grab his arm, moving my fingers through his.
He looks at me, moving over to press his side into mine. "Just keep your eyes open. You'll learn to love the view, I promise." Xavier smirks as I pale at the thought of opening my eyes.
"You promise?" I squeal, clenching my fists around his.
Once again the Devil looks feral as he leans down, brushing our lips together. "Promise..." He says against me.
Suddenly the bar falls down and clicks into place, making me squeal.
Turning my eyes to him in a accusation makes him roll his. "You just did that to distract me."
He smirks, not bothering to deny it or hide how smug he is. "Funny how well it worked, isn't it?"
"That's not funny at all." I grumble, my eyes widen in alarm as we start to move. "Xavier." I say in warning.
"It's okay," He says. "Just relax."
"The worst thing you can tell a tense person." I say, gripping onto him tighter as I squeeze my eyes shut. We're really soaring now.
His body shakes beside me and it takes me a few seconds to realize he's laughing.
Laughing.
What kind of asshole-?
"Look!" He shouts, rubbing his thumb over my knuckles. "I won't kiss you again if you don't look."
At this I open on eye, simply to glare at him but end up shrinking back into him as I watch the ant like people on the ground. I'm sure my hold on his hand hurts at this point but he doesn't complain or move to pull away.
"Come on Princess," He calls again. "I won't bite you." Xavier threatens me.
For some reason I frown at this, having gotten used to his love bites.
Any normal person would continue to look away.
But for me I hold him tighter, opening my eyes none the less. The fear is instant as I look down. The fast moving machine instantly making me nauseous.
His hand slips out of mine with ease, moving my head up as his fingers gently curl around my chin. "Not down, out."
I move my eyes straight out from me, gasping at the sight.
I can see the entire town.
It's beautiful.
The fear slowly leaves and I only close my eyes again when we start to descend.
It stops with a wince invoking shriek and a sudden jolt. Seconds later the bar snaps off me and I spring off the ride.
Dashing to my best friend she hugs me with a chuckle, raising a eyebrow to Xavier who followed behind me with my bag and a wide smirk.
Seeing my gaze locked onto the sharp canines he runs his tongue over his lips before raising his lips and winking at me. I glare at him, but his smirk only widens.
"I hate him now." I announce, but clearly no one believes me as I let him pull me into his chest by my waist. "I hate you. Do you feel accomplished now?"
"Sure," He says, showing off his sharp teeth once again. "It's not my fault you take to threats."
"It's you're fault you made them, asshole." I mutter, crossing my arms. "You didn't have to say any of that, sweet talk could work."
Xavier snorts, sending me a flat look. "I doubt that." Amused he wraps a arm around me, making heat flood me as I melt.
"What now?" Cal asks, looking around.
I'm yanked out of Xavier's hold, stumbling behind Julian as I tried to process what just happened. Soon he takes off at a run, making me nearly trip multiple times.
I cry out, my shorter legs barely keeping up.
Without thinking about it I maneuver out of his hold, grabbing his own wrist and twisting it until he falls back.
Because that move was unexpected, even by myself, I end up stumbling as he grabs my arms to try to catch himself and land straddling his abdomen. Blinking once we both make disgusted faces at the fact we're touching each other like this. "Ew!" We squeal in sync.
I scramble off him, shuddering as he looks up me starting at me shoes. He copies me, over reacting as he gags slightly. "How does Devil boy enjoy-" Jules pauses to motion down me. "That?"
I scowl at all of this, crossing my arms over my chest. "Because his head isn't up his ass with a mirror attached to it. Honestly," I throw my hands up. "The only person you genuinely find attractive is yourself!"
Julian, the idiot, touches his face with a nod. "Yeah, you're right. I am attractive."
"Boi," I roll my eyes, willing to protest against that for hours if I have to. "That's not what I-"
He cuts me off with a finger to my mouth, immediately regretting that action as he wipes the cancer he apparently got from touching me on his jeans.
"Don't deny my hotness." He says.
"Can't deny what you never had." I reply back.
Thankfully the rest of our friends finally find us, outside the bumper cars of all places. Even Cal looks annoyed at Julian.
What he just did earns a cold glare from Xavier -stepping close to me Xavier plants his hands on my ass, pulling me flush into his chest. "If you ever do that again I will punch you so fucking hard." He tells Jules, who scrambles away with Cal and Jessie in toe.
I hug him back, feeling safe and very warm. Something would be wrong if I didn't feel safe with him, or while he was touching me.
Stepping away I take his hand and tug him into the structure the bumper cars are in.
It's pretty empty around here, being the first day the weather broke and all. It's mostly just small families and this is adult bumper cars -the kind where if you spin out you lose and the winner gets a prize.
Of course he'd go to this one.
His sister sucks at this, Jessamine being a bad driver in general, and loses instantly.
Following after them I wince as Jessie squeals loudly and hops into a bright pink car, Cal gets a green one in the corner and Julian picks the purple one that is already pressed into his sisters -already planning to pummel her. I choose a dark red one in the open, Xavier chooses a large dark blue one and still seems to dwarf it.
"You know the rules." The exasperated ride directors voice cuts through the air. "Good luck! Or whatever..."
Music blasts through the space as the cars work, grabbing the wheel I yank it to the side, avoiding the Devil's attacks.
For most of the game it was Xavier chasing after Julian and making him smack himself playfully around the inside of his car.
Competitive teenagers.
Bah.
After Jessamine's supposedly angelic boyfriend spun her out straight into the wall I slammed into his side for revenge. Nobody messes with my best friend, he learns this as he widely spins before smacking into the metal pole in center, getting out as he drifts into the wall.
Serves him right.
It's then I notice Julian coming towards me.
With a smirk I wait till last moment and hit the gas, speeding out of the way as he hits the same pole and smacks into Xavier's car making them both spin but only Jules hits the wall.
But the Devil is still in, but trying to gain control of his cars movement.
Taking the opportunity to get him out I ram into the back of his car, hearing his growl over the music as his car dives nose first into the wall making my car break itself and drift into the open space once again.
This must be the winners vehicle.
I realize I win when all the music stops, a small victory horn blowing.
I won.
Against the Devil.
I won!
"That's my bestie!" Jessamine shouts, giving me a high five as we smirk in Cal and Julian's face.
The Angel nods, scratching the back of his neck with a sheepish expression. "I deserved that." He admits.
Julian simply sticks his nose in the air and sulks next to him.
Hands clamp down onto my shoulders as a shadow falls over me. Heat encases my back as Xavier presses against me. "I didn't." He growls lowly.
I gulp, about to respond when I feel his teeth sink into the same spot at the crook of my neck. My eyes squeeze shut as I gasp loudly, my body locking in place as the Devil grabs my hips.
"Ouch." Jessie winces.
"Dude," Cal coughs.
"So that's how you knew!" Julian says, happy he figured it out. "Gross."
Xavier digs into me harder, making my fists clench against my shirt. "Xavier." I warn, only to squeal loudly as his sharp teeth leave me and he licks across the mark.
As soon as he releases me I bolt from him, wiping the spit away.
I glare at the Devil, knowing he purposely made a show of licking me like that to embarrass me as I clearly wasn't freaked or even grossed out like most people would be.
"I didn't deserve that." I say, knowing it was a form of evil punishment by the means of pleasurable torture. "Asshole."
"Well, now you're even." Jessamine say, gushing with red cheeks. "But can we please address how hot that was? Now we all need a cold shower, or at least ice cream." She just wants ice cream.
"Not without getting my prize," I take another step away from Xavier in case he decides to bite me again. "Because I won, and ahem." I clear my throat, making him look away from his mark with a smug look to meet my eyes. "You didn't."
He points his finger at me, closing the distance between us easily. "Last warning Carter, next time I won't hold back." Xavier glances at my hips before smirking cockily. "On anything." Heat floods me as his point gets across a little too well. "And with me doing that, you definitely win something." He whispers.
I flush, my friends laugh despite not having heard a single word he says as I stomp over to the prize booth next to the technicians.
"Anything." The guy at the counter says, avoiding my gaze. I nearly groan as I realize he saw all that but begin to look for what I want -knowing it'll be one of the giant stuffed animals up top.
A giant plush wolf with large, sparkling blue eyes and black fur catches my attention.
What are the odds?
Snickering slightly I point to it, getting a hook the guy lowers it down to me.
"Have fun," He winks.
And I know a double meaning was brought to the table.
All because of a certain blue eyed Devil.
Finding my group out of the ride I smile widely, surprising Xavier as I ruffle his hair like a dog before motioning to my wolf. "Now I have two." I say smugly.
Xavier glares at me from my side, making my smile grow as Jessie squeals.
"I need a photo." She announces, holding up her phone.
I step into the unwilling Devil's side and grin, my arm barely wrapping around the large stuffed animal.
"Smile." Jessie commands, frowning at the blank Xavier.
He narrows his eyes at her, clearly not amused with her telling him what to do -even if it was as innocent as that.
I turn towards him, biting down on my tongue piercing before I speak. "Please?"
"Ugh." He groans, kissing my sensitive bite mark before looking up with a half smirk, half smile.
My best friend snaps countless pictures before I scowl at her. "That's enough." I wave her off, looking up to my whatever-he-is. "What now?" I ask.
He shrugs but Jessie smirks, looking between us.
"Ice cream." Is all she says. Once again my face heats up at the comment.
