Chapter 8: Pay Attention to Side Effects

I had told Krissy about everything that had happened. I wasn't sure what to expect from her. Luckily, she completely understood and said that she'd seen weirder couples. She told me she was sorry, but she couldn't help. Borrowers aren't meant to be with humans. That's the way it is. And I knew that. And I couldn't change that.
I kept trying my chance at borrowing from the chef, but I constantly failed. I was hopeless. I was going to die if I didn't ask for help. I was starving. So, I went to Krissy. I found her at Sow's place. That's where she was staying. We had really grown close and she was my only real friend right now. Rose was constantly busy because she was currently helping new children to learn about borrowing. I was at Sow's home and I knocked on her door. Or rather, the wood next to her door. Her door was a drape of ripped cloth.
          "Who is it?" Sow called.
"Carrie. I came to talk to Krissy. Is that okay?"
"Sure! Come on in! I'm occupied right now so I can't stand up," she said. I pulled the curtain back and saw Sow melting some needles for metal. I wasn't sure what she was making, but it was none of my business. "Krissy should be in her temporary room; it's down the hall, second door. You should be able to find her. She likes to practice her magic while she's in there." I thanked her and went down the hall, following Sow's directions. Sure enough, I saw Krissy in a small room with only a gray couch and a table inside of it. She was creating images with a little purple ball of smoke.
"Hey," I said and plopped down on the couch next to her. She glanced at me and moved her hands away from the cloud. It fell onto her chest and faded away.
"Hey. What's up?"
"Nothing. I already told you how I haven't been getting much food lately, and I was wondering if you could help me," I asked hoping she could help.
"Yeah, I can help. What do you want?"
"If you could just give me some kind of food everyday for some time that'd be great. I know that creating food with magic is dangerous and there's side effects. But, I need it because, well, this is why." At this point I lifted my shirt just bellow my chest to show her my protruding ribs, she looked over and her eyes widened. I let go of my shirt and said, "Yeah."
"I can give you food. At 9:00 A.M. everyday, some random foods will appear that should provide for at least three meals. Side effect are coughing, itches, and possible sleep walking."
"That's not that many. Wow, I would love that so much. Thank you, Krissy!"
"But, like I've told you before, witches powers can almost never be permanent. So I can only make this happen for one week. Got that?"
I sighed and said, "Well, I guess I'll have to continue borrowing again sometime, so I'll take it. Thank you."

Like Krissy promised, enough food for three meals appeared on my table every day. But, on the morning of the fourth day, I experienced the third side effect. I woke on a cold surface.
"Where am I?" I questioned as I felt around the surface I was on. It was hard and very cool. I lifted my head to look around. It hit me that I knew exactly where she was. I was on top of the refrigerator. Inside Sherlock's apartment. With my pajamas still on. I recalled Krissy telling me that a possible side effect was sleep walking. Great. I thought. I then realized I could hear voices. I looked into the living room and saw the TV was on. With an asleep Sherlock on the couch. I could hear his snores. My room is behind Sherlock's head. How did I get all the way over here without him noticing? I must've sleep walked through the walls. The hole I must've entered from is inside the cabinet above the fridge. I looked up and saw the door to the cabinet was slightly open. I stood and jumped to get back in, but I wasn't tall enough. I went through the my escape options. The closest way back to my room is on the counter. I need to go through the power outlet.
So, I stood and went to the edge of the fridge. It was a long jump. Three feet to be exact. I then saw that Sherlock had hung a magnetic white board on the side of the refrigerator. I just need to slide down the fridge and land on top of the white board. Then, I'll be much closer to the counter. I took a deep breath and put my feet into place so in could slide. Three, two, one. I jumped. Lucky for me, I landed right where I'd hoped. I then proceeded to jump and make a perfect landing in the counter with little noise. I smiled at myself and started on the short two minute travel to the power outlet.
The power outlet was behind a pot of flour that Sherlock had no doubt put there. I closed my eyes and pushed hard against the pot. Then turned toward my escape. That was surprisingly easy. Oh how I was wrong. I turned to the outlet and tried to slip my fingers under it and pull it out like I usually do. But, it didn't budge. And, at that exact moment, I realized Sherlock's soft snoring had ceased.
