Chapter 5: The Change
"So, are you ready, Carrie?"
"I think so," I took in a deep breath and pushed it out.
"Here's the vile. Remember, 24 hours. Be back here by this time tommorrow."
"I'm ready." She nodded handed me the vile. This time it was a teal blue. I popped the cap. I put the vile to my lips.
Okay, okay, that was just a flash-forward. Let's start from the beginning.
Knock, knock, knock. I looked up from reorganizing my bookshelf. I tend to re-organize when I'm nervous and/or stressed. I stood and walked toward the front door.
"Coming!" I yelled so the mysterious person wouldn't leave. Or knock again. I hate it when people do that. I swung open the door and saw Krissy.
"I found where you live!" she shouted and then covered her mouth. "Sorry, I forgot that there's a borrower who lives here." I widened my eyes at this comment. I poked my head outside the door and made sure no one was around. I grabbed Krissy by the wrist and pulled her inside. I shut the door quietly and turned to look at her.
"How did you know about the being?" I whispered.
"I can read emotions, personalities, and minds, remember?"
I raised an eyebrow and whispered back, "You didn't mention the mind reading part."
"Sorry! I get caught up in the moment, you know? Oh, and I did some research. His name is Sherlock Holmes. He's a famous detective from London. I don't know if this information will help, but I just thought you'd want to know."
"He's a DETECTIVE?" I yelled. Krissy covered my mouth.
"Shhhh!" she said.
"Sorry. But, if he's a detective, he could find out about me! I mean detectives are at deduction right? What if he figures out I did the thing to the oregano?"
"What?" Krissy said and raised an eyebrow.
"Just read my mind." She gave me a strange look and squinted. She looked into my eyes then her eyes widened and she said, "Oh. My. Gosh. You SERIOUSLY need to start being WAY more careful."
"I know. Can we just-- talk about the thing?" I asked, hoping to make myself feel better with the thought of getting new books and exploring new places.
"Okay. So, when I mix up the potion and you drink it, you will have 24 hours to do whatever you want. That means you should make a plan so you can fit everything you want to do into that day. I can get you arrangements for a place to stay so you can get some sleep in a nice place. Also, you will want some human clothes so you don't stand out, but don't worry, I've got that covered as well. You'll also need to carry some identification just in case. So, when you leave, I'll give that to you. Any questions?"
I took a moment to absorb this and look for any questions.
"Nope. I don't think I have any. Is there anything else?"
"Yeah. Have you gotten any money yet?"
"Right over there," I said and pointed toward the bookshelf. Behind it (and the small stack of books I was re-organizing), there was a folded stack of huge green human money behind it. Krissy stood and walked toward it. With a big heave, she pulled it from behind the shelf and it landed on top of her. I stood to help her and she pushed it off. Then, she unfolded all five of the green papers and observed it.
"You'd stole 100 dollars in human cash? Impressive!" I understood the American currency system and I already knew it was a pretty sound amount of money for a short amount of time.
"I know right? So, is that enough to buy new books and explore?"
"That should cover everything except food, but I can get you free room service at your hotel, so you'll be fine." I nodded and asked, "So, when can you have the potion done?" She put a finger to her chin and thought for a moment.
After she took a minute or two to think about this she said, "I can have it ready by 10 a.m. tomorrow." If I was drinking something at the time, I would've had an awesome spit take moment.
"Tomorrow?"
"That's right. I can have all your dreams come true tomorrow." She said with a wink.
"I'll get right on making my plan then!" I squealed.
Okay, now flash forward to the time from before.
I grabbed my piece of paper that had my schedule on it and pulled the money out from behind my newly rearranged bookshelf and dragged it to the door. Once I reached the front, I opened the door and made my way to my secret shortcut that lead to the vent where Krissy and I were to meet. I created a makeshift slide so I wouldn't have to drag the huge bills all the way to the gathering area. I took a look back at my makeshift home and said, "See you in 24 hours." I turned back and pushed myself down the slide. "Woohoo!" I shouted on the way down. It was just a few seconds later when I arrived at the bottom. Krissy was standing right in front of me and I was on the floor after a bad crash.
"Ow." I groaned standing and rubbing my head.
"Ready to go?" Krissy said with a smile.
"Sure," I answered picking up the money and dragging it toward the bars of the vent.
"I got that," Krissy said and snapped her fingers. The stack of twenties started floating and made their way outside.
"Thanks."
I climbed out and felt the mid-morning sun on my small frame. I turned to look at Krissy. She pulled herself out of the vent and then turned toward me.
"Okay put these clothes on and you'll be ready." She handed me a gray shirt with a teal cardigan and some tribal-print jeans. After I changed, she handed me some black high-heeled ankle boots and a latte brown purse with a long strap and fringe at the end. Finally, she took a pin identical to the one she had put on before drinking the potion and explained, "This pin will make sure your clothes, accessories, and anything you are holding grow and shrink with you so that when you grow, your clothes won't rip and when you shrink, you can keep anything you buy as well as your clothes."
"Thanks so much, Krissy. I've known you for like three days and you have been nothing but nice!" I said while pinning the pin to the purse and grappling my schedule.
"So, are you ready, Carrie?"
"I think so," I took in a deep breath and pushed it out.
"Here's the vile. Remember 24 hours. Be back here by this time tommorrow."
"I'm ready." She nodded and handed me the vile. This time it was a teal blue. I popped the cap. I put the vile to my lips.
"Here I go." I turned the vile up and swallowed the liquid. It tasted a bit like apple cider tea.
Suddenly, I felt a strange feeling in my chest. Then, the ground rushed away from me and the next thing I knew, I was the size of a being.
