Chapter 4: There Was a Witch

Over the weeks leading to the witch's visit I began to get sloppy with my borrowing. I kept on making stupid mistakes causing me to abort borrowings. I was almost seen by the head chef once, but, lucky for me, she was getting old and slightly blind.
Every borrower in the complex now knew about the witch visiting soon. So, we prepared.
In the human lobby of the complex there is one large space that the beings call a "vent" that's in the wall where Rose commonly holds gatherings for everyone in the entire complex. She decided to put together a welcoming party so the witch would feel like she was at home. Sow, the blacksmith (not to mention the witch's cousin), did most of the planning and had a team of people help her set up decorations and make food the day before she was to arrive.
The one thing on everyone's mind was how the witch was going to fit, her being the size of a being and all. Everyone constantly asked Sow, but she would just shake her head and say, "You'll see."
The day came when the witch was to arrive. I was exited and nervous about the witch, but I was mostly excited for the party. I could eat as much as I wanted and no one would stop me. My ribs were starting to protrude and it was scaring me. I needed to fix my borrowing skills.
Rose told everyone that the witch would arrive at 11:00 a.m. and asked that we be there at least ten minutes before. I was there at about 10:30 a.m. to help Sow and Rose set up. By eleven, we were ready.
Everyone had gathered and was anxious to meet this witch. Sow and Rose stood at the front of the crowd of other borrowers that lived here. Rose peeked her head out of the tall bars of the vent and slowly climbed through to see if the witch was there. The vent lead out to an alley that hardly anyone went to so we were safe from beings. Rose urged for everyone else to crawl out. The people assigned to the task of watching for beings came out first, then Sow, and then everyone else.
Suddenly, everyone heard a somewhat quiet crack. A cloud of purple smoke appeared and everyone gasped.
          "She's here!" Sow cried.
"Not too loud!" Rose reminded her.
The cloud began to grow and take the shape of a being. I was starting to feel afraid. Then, the smoke condensed and suddenly, right in front of everyone, there was a witch. She wore a ton of leather complete with a leather shirt, gloves, and diamond studded high heels. She wore black jeans and had dark hair with streaks of blue in it. She was also showing an embarrassing amount of cleavage. She suddenly looked down at the crowd of borrowers and smiled. I was horrified, but I didn't want to scream and be rude.
She suddenly reached down to the crowd and everyone screamed and ran. Except for me. I was frozen in fear. She grabbed Sow and shrieked, "Sow! It's been FOREVER!" She gave Sow a hug (sort of) and then put her down. She then realized that everyone had run away.
"OMG! I'm so sorry! Did I scare everyone? Or is it every borrower?"
"Yes, you did, Krissy, and no, it's just everyone." Sow explained. Krissy got down on her knees.
"Hey! This one didn't leave!" She said a brought her hand toward me. I tensed up and she stopped. "Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you! Oh, I'm so mean! Maybe I should go!" I just stared at her and she brought her hand back to her lap and sat on her heels. She sighed and Sow said,"Krissy, it's fine everyone just has to see you do the thing," she said with a wink, "and then they'll get used to you."
Krissy's eyes lit up and she cleared her throat and spoke softly,"I'm really sorry I scared you all away, but please come out! I won't hurt you, I promise." I saw Rose's face peer out of the vent. She crawled out and the rest of the borrowers followed. "Oh. My. Gosh. You all are so cute!" Sow rolled her eyes with a smile and smirked. Krissy looked down at Sow and said,"Can I post a pic of all of you on Witchygram?"
Sow looked at Rose and Rose asked,"What is Witchygram and can humans see it?"
Krissy responded,"It's a social media website for witches and only humans who know about the magical side of Earth can see it, and most who know about it don't even have a Witchygram account."
I could tell Rise didn't know what social media was (neither did I), but instead she asked, "Wait, some humans know about borrowers and witches and stuff?"
"Every once in awhile, a human finds out about people from the magical side of Earth, but don't worry. These few mortals are trustworthy. If they weren't, they would have a brainwashing." Krissy said smiling and giggling. Rose thought about it for a second and said that it was okay.
Krissy pulled something out of her pocket and tapped on it while standing up. Then she said,"Okay, everyone pose!" The thing she had taken out of her pocket now showed all of our faces and hers as she pointed it toward us.
"Um, excuse me, uh, is that a mirror?" Someone in the crowd asked.
"Oh, I forgot! You guys probably don't know what this is." She explained that it was some sort of camera that could also make "calls" and download "apps". After she took a picture and posted it to Witchygram, she kneeled back down and smiled. She looked down at Sow who looked back at her.
"Okay, now I'm going to show everyone my super cool thing." She said and giggled. She pulled a vile of pink liquid out of her back pocket and opened the cap. She pulled a pin shaped like a butterfly out of her pocket and pinned it to her shirt. Then she put the vile to her lips and drank it. Everyone gasped as her figure began to shrink down until she was everyone else's size. She then stood and said,"So? What do you guys think?" Everyone's mouths were wide open. Especially mine.
"I can't believe we didn't think of this! You're a witch! Of course you could shrink!" Rose exclaimed. Krissy shrieked and said,"Well, let's get this party started!"

I didn't eat the entire party. I was thinking about the potion Krissy drank. I was especially wondering if it could do the reverse. It was stupid, yes, but I wanted to explore the human world and, more importantly, go to a human library. I desperately wanted to read more books than the ones I owned and I was fascinated with their world. I wanted to see it.
As soon as the party had kicked off, and everyone stopped crooning over Krissy, I decided to talk to her. She was over in a corner talking to Sow. I walked toward her and she noticed me.
"Hey, it's you! The one who didn't run away! Sow can you get us some drinks?" she asked.
"Be right back!" Sow said an left to get the refreshments which was just milk. Us borrowers really know how to turn up.
"Actually, I didn't leave because I was frozen in fear." I admitted and blushed.
"Oh, I'm so sorry. I didn't realize I would scare everyone." She pulled me into a hug and when she went back she said, "I can tell you're the shy type of person."
          "Um, I don't know. I-"
"There's something on your mind too. I can't tell what it is, but you're stressed." I widened my eyes.
          "What?"
"Sorry! I've been working on my emotion tests and personality checks. It's a somewhat rare witch skill that I found out I have recently and I've just been practicing."
"O-okay, well I was wondering, um, about you're potion. I was thinking, uh, is it possible to use that potion to grow?" She made a weird look and I could tell she was reading my emotions again.
"Do you want to visit the human world, uh, what was your name?"
"Carrie and, well, yes." I sighed. Krissy smiled and said, "Don't feel bad. I was raised in the forest in a rotten cottage and I NEVER got to see the human world. I was so curious that one day I snuck away and never looked back. Now, I travel the mortal world and help humans in need." Her story touched me and made me realize how selfish I was for wanting books for myself.
"Oh, well, never mind. I don't really-"
"You want to explore the human world and mainly, go to the library. Am I right? But, why?" I sighed. I explained that I was bored of all the borrower books I owned and that I wanted to read more.
"Honey, I understand.  You don't need to feel bad about that. I understand how it would be boring to read the same books over and over. I don't really like books, but what if I posted the same thing over and over on my Witchygram page? All my followers would be so bored!" I didn't know what she meant by "followers" or her "page" (and I was still a bit fuzzy on the whole "Witchygram" thing), but I assumed she understood.
"So, can you do it? Can you make me a-a being?"
"Of course I can sweetie! I'll drop by your place later and we can discuss. I can't provide you with money, however. Is that ok?"
"Yeah, that's great! I can handle it. Thank you!"
"Anytime! Wait! Where do you live?" she yelled as I ran back to my room and Sow returned with her drinks.

I checked my wallet in search of money to go out and eat. I found almost half of my money missing. I squinted as I thought through what I had done with my wallet.
Earlier, I had came home and had thrown my wallet on the counter just below where the oregano had fallen. Something suspicious is going on here I thought and I'm going to get to the bottom of it.
