Chapter 2: The Oregano that RUINED My Life

I stared at the wood door with the number 143 on it. The number was on a bronze plaque with a black outline. It was old and beginning to lose it's color. There was a circular handle that I could tell was a more recent addition to the door, yet still rather old. On the circular knob, there was a large keyhole for the large, odd key in my hand with the letter "B" on it.
I had expected myself to come up with why the key had a "B" on it by the time I got to the room on the second floor above the kitchen. But, so far, the complex had given me no clue as to why there was a "B" on the key.
I stared at the silver key in my hand and wrapped my hands around it, ready to open the door. I gingerly placed the key into the lock and gently turned it to the right.
I heard a click as the door unlocked. I took out the key and placed it in the large pocket of my trench coat. I lightly touched the handle and turned it to the right.
The door made a long, drawn out creak as I slowly opened the door. In front of me, there was a small hallway with beige walls and small lamps connected to the walls. To my left was a closet meant for holding coats with a white door. To my right was a white door that lead into a medium sized bathroom containing a large shower with a glass sliding door, a large sink with a silver faucet, white bathroom title, and a counter with cedar wood drawers on the bottom and a marble countertop.
I took in my current surroundings and hung my trench coat up in the corner. I shut the cedar door behind me and noticed the door had a lock on the inside to keep people out. I glance up and I saw a small peep hole.
I turned and decided to explore the main rooms. Mr. Stewart told me on my way up that this was the third biggest suite in the building. I, honestly, don't care where I stay as long as no one has been in it in awhile. It makes for more mysteries to discover.
I begin walking towards what looks like a kitchen. On the inside there was darker wood floor with the same color of wood on all the bottoms of the counters. The counter was a darker color with white flecks of color all over. It went around in a "u" shape and in the middle there was an island. There were the same dark wood cabinets above and a large silver refrigerator next to the counter on the right.
I turned to look at other rooms when I heard a shatter of glass. I quickly turned and saw a spice bottle on the ground with it's contents spilled all over the floor. I glanced around and noticed one of the cabinets next to the fridge lying slightly open. This cabinet seemed to contain more spices.
I quickly paced over to the shattered bottle on the floor and examined the spice. It hit me what kind of spice it was.
Oregano.

After I had put a good distance between me and the kitchen, I started running up the stairs made of nails to my "room". My room was located under the walls and floorboards of an apartment that never seemed to be occupied. This made me able to explore the room and use it to my advantage. The best part was that it was directly above the kitchen so it didn't take long to travel between the two.
I opened a piece of wood that was the front door to my house. The door had my last name "Abot" carved into it so new borrowers knew who lived here. Inside it was clean and looked similar to the apartment that I lived in the walls of.
Most of my stuff was fake, however and wasn't nearly as nice as the "real thing" but I liked it just the way it was.
I sighed remembering my omelette wouldn't taste as good because I was unable to get the oregano. I decided I would explore the apartment some more until the sun rises because I wouldn't be able to sleep now that I had just failed a borrowing.
I shut the front door and ran to my room. It had a nice bed in it with blue sheets and my borrowing clothes were all in drawers under it. Besides that there was a dresser with more home clothes and nicer clothes for events in it and brushes and various clips on top.
Since I live in a large community of borrowers, we have small parties and feasts occasionally. We don't have a money or trading system because borrowers don't believe in that. All that really matters to us is keeping everyone happy, alive, and safe.
On the blank wall in the corner, there was a place that I could push open and enter the unoccupied apartment. I had many other ways to get into the apartment but this was my favorite because I could skydive onto the couch without a scratch. I scuttled over to the door and quickly opened it, entering the huge world of the beings.
The door lead to the living room of the apartment. The couch below me was a three seater that was turquoise. Across from me there was a large black box that many of the beings called a "TV". Over the years of living here I figured out how to work it and would occasionally watch it with low volume so I couldn't be heard. In between the couch and TV was a cedar coffee table with glass in the middle making the floor underneath it visible. Next to the couch was a tall lamp and a smaller coffee table. To the right of the TV was a sliding glass door that lead to a balcony.
I looked to the right and saw the opening in the wall that lead to the kitchen. I shut the door that lead to my room and jumped. I landed softly on the middle cushion of the couch. I looked both ways and stood. I took slow steps across the couch because if I ran I would fall because of how puffy the couch was.
I jumped down the slight drop and didn't quite land on my feet. I was still not strong enough to land directly on my feet onto the plush carpet. I looked out the glass door and noticed the sky was turning pink. The sun must be coming up I thought. I began the long walk to the kitchen. There was an opening closer to the kitchen but I like to have long walks when it's early.
I made it to the wood of the kitchen and stopped to look around. Where will I explore today? I decided I could use some climbing practice and started walking to the counter next to the fridge. As I was walking I started reaching into my bag for the sticky paper the beings call "tape".
Once I reached the counter, I started putting the tape over my gloves. I stuck the tape on the counter and pulled to make sure it would stay. It held well and I began the long climb.
I reached the top and walked over to the fridge ready to begin another climb. There was a small gap between the fridge and the counter. I started getting a running start so I wouldn't miss the fridge and plummet to my doom.
I jumped over the gap and landed on the fridge perfectly. I started climbing towards the top.
At the top I decided I was going to practice side climbing. It's regular climbing just moving to the side instead of up or down.
I moved to the edge of the fridge facing the wall and put one hand of tape to the wall. At that moment I though I heard some shuffling outside.
Out of borrower instinct, I froze. I listened and felt for any vibrations or more noise. Borrowers are very acute and we are better at sensing movement that we can't see, unlike beings.
After a minute or so, I decided it was safe and I was just tired. So, I began putting the rest of my limbs onto the cabinets against the wall and starting slowly shuffling to the side.
After moving about a foot away from the fridge I accidentally placed my hand on one of the cabinet door. See, if I put my hand on any of the doors and I pull to hard to get it off, the cabinet could swing open and the climb on an open door is not fun. If you use to much force, the door could swing around and make it even harder to climb.
I sighed hating myself for loosing focus while climbing. I started trying to pull my arm off the door.
The next thing I knew the door swung slightly open as I had predicted. I was dangling on the door with one hand still stuck to the door.
Great. Just brilliant. I thought. I started lifting my legs to stick to the door when I noticed something. It was inside the cabinet.
Spices. Spices of all sorts scattered all around the cabinet. Spices in all sizes of containers, round, tall, and long. As I was scanning, I noticed the best part. Right in front of my eyes. Oregano.
I didn't care how the spices got there anymore even though I had a hole in the corner of this cabinet and had never seen them in here before. Heck, I didn't care about anything in this huge world I live in anymore. I wanted no, I needed the oregano. This put the omelet together. This reminded me of my childhood.
Now, motivated by the oregano, I had absolutely no trouble at all climbing to the inside of the cabinet.
Once inside, I took off the tape and placed it in the "used tape" bag of my bag. Then, I grabbed the tiny, pink, doll house cup that I had planned to use to put the oregano from the kitchen in.
I slowly walked to the container with oregano in it. It was a bit bigger than me. I reached my hand to the top of it and opened the cap.
The amazing smell of the spice instantly touched my nose. I took a deep breath which flooded nice memories of mornings when I smelled this from my childhood into my mind.
I smiled from happiness and slightly tilted the container so I could get my cup inside and scoop some out. The amazing smell was so perfect that I hardly noticed the creaking of the front door to the room as it opened.
Panic rushed through every vain in my body the minute I saw the massive figure in the doorway. It looked one way, scanned, then the other way, and scanned. Oh crap, he's the observant type.
I put two and two together and figured out why there must be all of these spices in here. This being that just entered this room, was going to start living here. He's not just entering this room, he's entering my life.
It took off it's colossal light brown trench coat and shut the door behind him. He took steps that covered what I could do in five minutes in five seconds. I could feel the vibrations as he made his way towards me.
It had short, dirty blonde hair and a well built face. It wore a white shirt and black dress pants. It had a black belt and fancy black dress shoes. I decided he must be a guy.
I quickly checked the cabinet door behind me. It wasn't too far out, but he might notice. He started scanning the kitchen I was in. His eyes neared me, my heart felt like it was trying to escape my chest.
His eyes passed right over me. I let out a breath I realized I was holding. I chuckled at myself then made the biggest mistake I have ever made. I let the oregano slip from my grasp. My eyes widened when I realized what I had done. The being was turning when the glass collided with the floor.
I didn't stick around to see what would happen next. I turned and ran through the hole in the corner of the cabinet.

Author's Note
So, what do you think? Honestly, I'm proud of myself. Guess how many words this chapter has (not including these)? 2117! Yay! That's probably the best word count I've probably ever had on a story! Anyway thanks @Dimondgirl_ema for the comment! I guess I'll go with that story cover cause I got no negative feedback on it. Now I just have to find the time to do it. Have a good one!
