Chapter 26: Valeria
In the two days leading up to the mission, we prepared ourselves, and finally, the day had come. I learned from Price that they were erecting graves for the fallen soldiers. I stopped what I was doing, cleaning Ghost's weapon, and said sadly, "The graves, huh?"
Price nodded, "Yes, the graves."
I took a deep breath and exhaled heavily. Price looked at me seriously and said, "You must be extremely careful until we go on the mission. You can't afford to die, Yn."
I looked at him and replied, not very confident, "I won't die, and besides, I'm more worried about something happening to you."
He looked at me, and with a lack of certainty, said, "Don't worry, I'm experienced."
I said, "That's what Ghost said."
My grip on the weapon tightened as memories of Ghost promising to always be by my side resurfaced. Price changed the subject, "How are your injuries?"
"So far, so good. The main thing is they don't kill me," I replied.
Price smiled at that.
Laswell burst into the room, saying, "If you're ready, we can fly now."
Both Price and I nodded. Price was fully geared up like the rest of the men from Mission Black Cobra. But I wasn't; I would receive my gear from Valeria.
We boarded the chopper, and I looked at the other 36 remaining men, a stark contrast to the initial 50. When we arrived at the location, the men stationed themselves near the building, and Price personally took the position as my sniper, protecting me.
The guards knew about my arrival; they frisked me and put the blindfold back on before escorting me to Valeria. They removed the blindfold upon reaching her.
Valeria was by the window, holding a glass of whiskey. "Put on everything you find there, stow your weapons as best you can, and then," she turned to me menacingly, "you will not act on emotion. Wait for the right moment and then intervene."
I looked at her annoyed, "Do you think I'm a beginner?" I began taking off my clothes and put on the male suit she offered, along with a black robber's mask. I strapped two pistols to my hips and two knives on my arms and chest.
I said, "I'm ready."
Valeria responded, "Finally, amiga. Let's go."
As we exited, I signaled Price through hand gestures. I noticed the other men getting into position.
We reached the destination, and the casino was enormous. I was in shock; it seemed empty, reserved only for this meeting, as a show of power. Valeria walked in confidently, and I observed everything around me. Upstairs was a glass sphere, and inside was a circular interior with a combination of white and gold.
Slot machines and red carpets filled the place.
The other bodyguards and I positioned ourselves behind Valeria, each covering a direction in the building. I took a position where I could directly face her and be close to Makarov.
Minutes passed, and the casino door opened. Makarov entered with four guards. Time seemed to stand still for me as I saw his face – the man responsible for so much hatred, anger, and sorrow. He was so close, yet so far away. I debated whether to shoot him or torture him. I settled on torture.
I watched as he sat down, his four men forming a protective shield behind him.
They discussed their business and the third missile. When they reached the topic of rivals, Valeria asked, "What about them?"
Makarov laughed and said, "Almost all of them have been eliminated. Only Price is left, and he has my son."
I froze in my seat upon hearing that piece of information. Zion was his son? A further parasite to unleash upon the world. And he still didn't know that I had survived the explosion all those months ago.
Slowly, I reached for my pistol and gave Price a signal over the radio to storm in one minute.
I aimed my weapon at one of the guards and fired, taking down all four in a single line. Valeria smiled at the sight, drawing her own weapon before Makarov could react. In a playful tone, she said, "Na, na, na, you wouldn't want to be a bad boy, would you?"
I removed my mask and approached Makarov, grabbing him by the hair, wincing in pain, and smiling at him. "Your nightmare is here," I said.
He looked shocked. "You survived..."
I replied, "Yes, I did," before rendering him unconscious with the butt of my pistol, handcuffing him.
Then, Price and the team stormed in, their weapons drawn, lasers pointing in every direction.
Valeria asked defiantly, "Are you here to arrest me?"
Price responded, "No, in five minutes, I want you gone from here, or else I will arrest you."
She nodded, looked at me one last time, and left the room with her men.
Price put his hand on my shoulder. "Well done."
I smiled half-heartedly, finding solace in the fact that we had captured him and that I would have the opportunity to brutally punish him.
