Chapter 19: The arrest
We watched in shock as three full helicopters of American troops appeared overhead. I looked between Price and McKannedy, a mixture of disbelief and concern written on my face.
Price's voice was filled with realization, "They must have located us."
McKannedy responded with a curse, "Holy shit, now it's our turn."
I muttered a curse under my breath, "Fuck."
A voice boomed from one of the helicopters' loudspeakers, "Kneel down, all of you, or we will be forced to resort to violence."
Price commanded, "Get down, all of you!"
Price, McKannedy, and their soldiers knelt as instructed. I hesitated for a moment, defying the order. Price pleaded with me, "Yn, kneel down."
But I didn't care anymore.
The voice from the helicopter warned me one last time, "Last warning, young lady."
A red laser sight was trained on my head, likely from a sniper's rifle.
Price pulled me down forcefully, and I complied, placing my hands on my head.
The helicopters landed, and a team emerged from the first one. At first, I couldn't believe my eyes. But then, my shock turned into disbelief as I saw a man in full military gear and wearing a skull mask.
I muttered in disbelief, "Ghost?!"
The man approached, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion, "I am not Ghost."
Deep down, I had expected this outcome, but a glimmer of hope had remained. I lowered my head in frustration and bit my lip.
The man introduced himself, "You are dealing with Sergeant Keegan Russ. We have been tasked with arresting you for treason against the homeland."
I glared at him with intense anger, barely containing the urge to pounce and strike him. His comrade next to him noticed and pointed his weapon at my chest, warning, "Stay calm, little girl. We don't want a bloodbath here."
In a dangerous tone, I responded, "We're being arrested for treason? Are you kidding me? We risked our lives here for the homeland, and we've lost people because of this so-called 'treason'."
Price tried to calm me down, but I refused to be appeased.
Keegan stared at me with cold, emotionless eyes, giving an order, "Just handcuff her."
They forced me to the ground and handcuffed me. Price turned to Keegan and advised, "There are two more in the barn. Please, don't shoot. They will instinctively aim their weapons at you."
Keegan nodded and signaled toward the barn. Some soldiers immediately headed in that direction.
Keegan then turned to McKannedy, questioning him, "And who are you? You weren't on my list."
McKannedy replied, "I am here as their supporter."
Even though Keegan's mask concealed his expression, he ran his tongue across his teeth, seemingly contemplating something. "Since you're not on our list and we're not on American soil, you may leave."
McKannedy nodded and gave Price a quick glance before ordering his men, "Retreat."
And just like that, they were gone.
Soap and Rudolfo were brought out and lined up with us. Keegan commanded, "Load them into the helicopters!"
The soldiers followed his orders, escorting us into the helicopters.
Price, Soap, and Rudolfo were placed in the second helicopter, while I was in the one with Keegan sitting in front of me and his right-hand man beside him. I was the only one in handcuffs.
The noise from the helicopter was deafening, causing Keegan to shout, "Should I remove those handcuffs, or will you attack me?"
I glanced out the window, my gaze cold and determined. "If you value your neck, I suggest you keep those handcuffs on."
Keegan leaned back, chuckling, before once again adopting his sinister expression.
I glared at him fiercely. How could I have mistaken him for Ghost? Keegan had gray, cold eyes and was slightly shorter than Ghost.
I stared out the window as the wind inside the helicopter whipped my hair around. Keegan looked at me intensely with his cold eyes. Unable to see his expression due to the mask, it seemed as if he wanted to kill me.
In a cold tone, I spoke, "Is there something bothering you, lapdog of some general?"
He simply looked at me, saying nothing, before turning his gaze away.
As I looked out from the helicopter, I could see the bridge where Gaz died and the area where Ghost met his end. I leaned my forehead against the window, a tear rolling down my cheek. However, I turned away in such a way that even Keegan couldn't see it.
It wasn't a long flight as the helicopter made quick work of it. Upon arrival, we were back on American soil. Keegan stood up and gestured for me to follow him with a firm grip on my shoulder. The sight of many soldiers greeted us—some training, some preparing for missions, and there were even some recruits.
Price mumbled, "Hmph, back on American soil again."
I looked in the direction of our old headquarters, Task Force 141. It pained my heart. We had left that place together, but now we wouldn't be returning as a team.
Keegan nudged me to move forward, and I complied, knowing exactly where he was leading us. Of course, it was the interrogation room—a dreadful place. Although America had its rules, who cared about what happened behind the scenes?
It was a ten-minute walk, and the soldiers we passed gave us disdainful looks, as if we were criminals. Fuming with anger, I asked one of them, "What are you staring at?"
Soldier 1: Traitor.
I was about to lunge at him, but Keegan grabbed me and pulled me away, shooting the soldier a stern look that made him freeze.
We finally reached the interrogation room, and we were separated from each other, as expected. My hands were cuffed to the table, which had a pole in the middle.
Keegan was my interrogator. I sat with crossed legs, looking at him expressionlessly.
He took a deep breath and started asking, "Where are Ghost, Alejandro, and Gaz? And don't make me repeat the question."
I looked at him for a few seconds before answering dryly, "They're d-e-a-d (I emphasized the word slowly for him to grasp)."
He played with a pen, staring at me intently, "Dead?"
I replied with frustration, "Yes," my eyebrows furrowing in anger. "General Shepherd, who betrayed us and is now working with Vladimir Makarov, hired him to kill Gaz. He planted a bomb on Alejandro and blew him up. And, to top it all off, Shepherd personally shot and incinerated Ghost." When I mentioned Ghost, I slammed my fist on the table, the rage building inside me.
Keegan: So you're telling me you're the victims and the ones who committed the crime are Stepherd and Makarov?
Yn: Yes, damn it.
Keegan: Why should I believe you? He said in a cold tone. His damn gray, cold eyes pierced right through your heart.
I replied coldly, "Captain Price has given a file to the CIA that proves our innocence. You should get in touch with them, preferably with Laswell."
Keegan said playfully, "I don't have the authority to contact the CIA, and if your innocence is proven, then everything's fine, right? You don't need to be so tense."
I simply looked him in the eyes. He was starting to irritate me.
He then threw the pen with such precision that it grazed my cheek. I showed no reaction or fear; I continued to stare at him.
Keegan "Oh, no reaction?"
I remained silent, not willing to give him any satisfaction. He was trying to get under my skin, but I wouldn't let him. I knew we had the evidence to clear our names, and I was determined to hold on until the truth prevailed.
