"I cannot believe we're actually doing this."
Tyler stood frozen as Josh knocked on Debby's front door. He tightly held a bouquet of flowers they bought from a nearby flower shop, nearly shitting his pants when Josh pushed the doorbell.
"She probably hates us by now. This was a mistake. She's going to kick our asses and then tell the other and we'll never be able to make due with them. Oh shit, this was a bad idea. Can't we just go back to my place and get takeout or something?"
"Calm down," Josh said. "This is Debs we're talking about, she'll be ecstatic to see me."
When Debby opened the door a few seconds later, she didn't look very ecstatic. In fact, she turned from confusion, to shock, to beyond furious. She hadn't changed much over the years, except for freshly dyed silver hair and various tattoos. That made her possibly even more terrifying.
"Hey, Debs."
Debby stepped outside, slammed the door behind her, and immediately backhanded Josh so hard he stumbled back.
"Oh shit." Tyler took a few steps away in case she decided to slap him too.
"Three years," she snapped, slapping Josh again. "Three goddamn years and not even a single phone call. We thought you were dead! Did you not think of maybe, I don't know, telling us you were alive? What the fuck?"
"Look, Debby-"
"Don't 'look Debby' me." She hissed. "Where the hell have you been for the past three years?"
"Alone and suicidal, nothing new. By the way, we brought you flowers."
Tyler waved meekly from behind Josh as Debby realized he was there. "Hi."
She blinked and relaxed slightly. "Oh. You're with Josh. Again."
"You're just as shocked as I am."
Josh took the bouquet from Tyler and handed it to Debby, who looked like she was still trying to put together a mental puzzle and failing.
"Can we come in?"
Debby stood there, eyes flickering back between Josh to Tyler, before nodding and walking back in. Tyler and Josh followed, rubbing his cheek.
"Want a drink?" Debby offered, waving at the mini fridge beside the couch. "My roommate's gone for thanksgiving break so you can drink all of his beer if you want. Free of charge."
"Thanks but no thanks, I'm driving," Josh said, flopping sideways on her couch. Tyler stood at the doorway, taking in his surroundings.
It was obvious that several people lived in there- the majority probably consisting of boys. Empty beer bottles littered the carpet flooring, with textbooks, papers, and mail letters piling on the kitchen table.
Debby looked at Tyler, motioning for him to sit down. "Stop being a stranger, Ty."
He nodded and sat down, crossing his legs. Josh looked over at Debby. "How's college life treating you?"
"Lovely," Debby sneered.
Josh whistled, kicking his feet up. "That bad, huh?"
"My girlfriend broke up with me, I have a rap sheet taller than me, and I'm holed up with six alcoholic frat boys, by at least I'm still honor roll."
"Wait, Mel broke up with you?" Tyler asked.
Debby nodded, her face turning fierce. "I wish I knew why. But I guess that's just how life is. Things happen that we just can't control, and we have to hope they're for the better."
Josh poked at a stack of books on the kitchen table, making them tumble to the grounds. Debby rolled her eyes but didn't make a move to pick them up.
"I cannot wait until I marry a nice girl and move to a city far, far away from here to teach," she said, sighing and rubbing her temples.
"You're going to be a teacher?" Tyler asked. Debby nodded.
"Preschoolers, hopefully." She crossed her arms. "If you don't mind me asking, why the hell are you guys here again?"
Josh spoke, as Tyler really had no idea why they were there. He didn't have a close friendship with her, it was more circumstantial than anything. But that didn't stop both of them from missing her laugh and witty comments.
"We're here to make things right," Josh said. "Me skipping town on graduation- not cool. Let us make it up to you."
It didn't take Debby much convincing to say yes. She obviously missed them as much as they missed her.
"Fine. What do you want to do?"
"Shopping," Josh said.
"Shopping?" Debby and Tyler asked in unison.
Josh nodded. "You're a fashion master Debs. Doesn't going to the mall and just kicking it with four old friends sound like an ideal way to catch up with someone?"
"You've got a point, I am a fashion master. Okay. I'm in. But you said four old friends and I see only two do you. Who are the other two?"
Debby looked over at Tyler, who shrugged. He had an idea of who else Josh would be invited, but Tyler doubted he would. Surely, surely not.
"Abby-" Josh turned his head to Tyler and winked.
"And Melanie."
