"Maybe that wasn't the best idea for our deteriorating mental health," Josh muttered once they were parked safely in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen five miles down the road.
Tyler reclined in his seat, still visibly shaken but not having a panic attack. That was possibly the only upside to the whole situation.
"We literally left your house because your family was arguing whether or not you're depressed," he said.
Josh chuckled under his breath. "Talk about a memorable thanksgiving."
"At least they care. Or try to."
"Yeah, right," Josh said. "My mom would rather disown me but that looks bad at her work."
Tyler looked up from his burger. "I don't think so."
"Yeah, well, when was the last time your family fought over how much of a burden you are over dinner?" Josh snapped, his hands turning into fists.
Tyler flinched but stayed quiet.
Josh sighed, rubbing his eyes with the back of his fist. "I'm- I'm sorry, man. This is just- I wanted to fix everything with her. I made up with my dad, my grandparents, my siblings. But between her and me lies a battlezone- and I don't want to die knowing she still hates me."
When he heard a sniffle, Tyler looked over. Josh was staring out of the window. His hands clenched and unclenched, finally relaxing in his lap.
Tyler reached a hand over, gripping one of Josh's hands and squeezing it. He looked out above the parking lot, trying to find any trace of stars in the empty sky.
"What happened to us, man?" Josh asked. "We used to be so different. Senior year wasn't exactly ideal for either of us, but at least back then we had hope. We had friends. We had each other. Now the only thing we have is the that by November we're long gone."
Tyler didn't know what to say. So he just sat there, holding Josh's hand as he thought of how to reply.
"I know I said I had nothing on my bucket list before, but I think I do now," Tyler said.
Josh looked at him, surprised. "Well, that was random. And what is that?"
"Help you fulfill yours," Tyler said.
Josh rolled his eyes. "Don't bother. I hardly doubt that we can even accomplish all of that in- what do we have, six weeks?"
Tyler shrugged. He didn't know where this idea had come from, or the glimmer of false confidence that came with it, but he didn't really like it. "I think we can. If it's the last things we're going to do, why not do it all?"
Josh scoffed and didn't reply until he looked back at Tyler, who was silently stirring his chicken finger in ketchup.
"Oh, shit, you're serious."
"No shit, I'm serious."
Tyler rolled his eyes. He held up his drink, tapping the edge to Josh's shake.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Josh Dun."
Josh hinted at a smile and clinked his drink with Tyler's.
"Happy Thanksgiving, Tyler Joseph."
