Chapter Twenty: Person Of Interest

Ethan's Pov

I called mom and told her everything that happened and she came to school and picked me up so we could head to the police station.

The other girls parents were called and arrived at the police station the same time me and mom did.

Mom decided to sit with all the girls during their interrogation, while I waited outside with the other girls parents.

Finally they were done with Spencer's interrogation and her, mom and the detective walked out of the room.

"You'll be available for more questions?" the detective asked.

"Of course, the girls have nothing to hide" Mom said.

The detective nodded and walked away. Mom walked over to the other girls parents and Spencer walked over to us.

When she made her way towards us, she sighed and looked at me with an apologetic look in her eyes.

"I'm so sorry, bro. We should've listened to you. And because we didn't listen we got in trouble" Spencer said.

"It's fine, sis. Just promise to listen to me next time" I softly said, rubbing her back.

"Whoever said 'the truth will set you free' never met A" Aria said.

"Jesus" me and Emily said.

This made the girls look at us in confusion and I cleared my throat and rubbed the back of my neck.

"It's from the bible. Jesus said it" I said and Emily nodded.

"Then Aria's right. Because that bitch is going straight to hell" Hanna scoffed.

"I wasn't completely honest in there" Spencer said.

This made us look at her in confusion and I could see some nervousness in her eyes.

"I should have been, but my mom was right next to me. And with the whole Wren thing, I couldn't bring myself to say that I also hooked up with Ian" Spencer said.

"Spence, that has nothing to do with this" I softly said.

"Yeah, I lied about it too, Spence" Emily softly said.

"You know, sometimes telling the truth does more harm than good" Hanna shrugged.

This made the girls look at her in confusion while I let a small smile appear on my face.

"Who said that?" Spencer asked.

"Alison" me and Hanna said.

Hanna looked up at me and giggled before laying her head on my shoulder. I chuckled and gently ruffled her hair.

"Hey, Emily" a familiar voice called out to her.

"Garrett?" Emily asked, shocked.

This made our eyes widen in shock as we turned around to see Garrett walking towards us with a smile on his face.

But what shocked us was the fact that he was wearing a cop uniform.

"You're a cop now?" Aria asked.

Garrett nodded, the smile still on his face. I didn't want to be rude so I sent him a small smile and nodded.

"Look, uh, sorry they're putting you through this" Garrett softly said.

"Officer Reynolds" the detective called out to him.

We turned around to see the detective staring at Garrett, nodding at him, telling him to walk over to where he was.

Garrett smiled at him and nodded before sighing and turning towards us.

"Probably wants a refill on his coffee and another jelly doughnut" Garrett sarcastically said.

I let out a small snort at that before he nodded at us and walked over to the detective.

We all sighed and turned back to each other.

"He looks good in a uniform" Hanna shrugged.

This made Spencer snort and shake her head, a small smirk on her face.

The Next Day

It was the next day and me and Spencer woke up and were making our way downstairs to eat some breakfast.

However, when we got there we saw mom and dad sitting in the living room, drinking coffee.

This made me and Spencer look at each other in confusion. Since when do mom and dad have time to drink coffee together.

"Hey kiddos. Did either of you get some sleep?" Dad asked.

"A little" Spencer shrugged.

"Same" I shrugged, rubbing the back of my neck.

We both walked over to them, Spencer made her way to sit next to dad while I made my way to sit next to mom.

I sighed and laid my head on mom's shoulder, feeling tired.

Mom chuckled softly and wrapped her arm around my waist, kissing my head.

"Still tired, sweetie?" Mom softly asked.

"Hell yeah" I nodded.

"Language, young man" Dad teased.

I rolled my eyes at that but let out a small laugh, Spencer doing the same as dad handed her a cup of coffee.

"Yeah, we all needed a night to settle down and rethink this" Mom sighed, rubbing my back up and down.

"Here, kiddo. Have some coffee and a cookie, your favorite" Dad smiled.

"Thanks old man" I snorted, taking the coffee and cookie from him.

"Hey, stop calling me that, I'm not old" Dad said, his voice filled with slight annoyance and amusement.

"Sure, whatever you say" I rolled my eyes.

This made Spencer snort while mom tried to keep in her laughter at the playful glare dad was giving me.

Spencer sighed before looking at both mom and dad nervously.

"Have you talked to Melissa?" Spencer asked.

"Yeah. Yeah, we talked to Melissa and Ian" Dad said.

I raised an eyebrow and looked at mom who just sent me a small smile and nodded.

"They weren't that surprised" Dad said.

"In hindsight, your sister saw it coming. And we should have too" Mom said.

"Saw what coming?" Spencer asked in confusion.

"We should have insisted that you see someone after they found Alison. We're not blaming you, we're blaming ourselves" Mom said, looking at dad who nodded.

This made my eyes widen and my jaw drop in complete disbelief.

I looked at Spencer who had the same reaction as me.

"Like a shrink?" I asked.

"Dad?" Spencer asked, trying to hold in her tears.

Dad looked at her and glanced at mom before looking back at my sister. He sighed and set his cup down and placed his hand on her arm.

"Look, you, you told the police everything you know. So while they're doing their job. We just think you should see a therapist, talk about how you feel" Dad softly said.

Are you freaking kidding me right now?

Are they seriously going to take Ian's side over Spencer's? Their own daughter.

I still have my doubts of Ian being Ali's killer, but that doesn't mean he should be let off the hook easily.

I can't believe they're even suggesting this.

"I-I feel scared. Okay? I feel scared every day that he's here. Please, there's nothing wrong with me" Spencer said.

My heart broke at how sad and hurt my twin sister sounded.

I pulled away from mom and set my cup down and got up and walked over to her.

I crouched down and wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tightly. She placed her hands on top of mine and leaned into my touch.

Just then Ian and Melissa walked into the room, Spencer quickly wiped her tears so they wouldn't see it.

Melissa smiled at me but when she saw Spencer she frowned.

"I hope you get the help you need" Melissa said.

"Spencer, I want you to know I'm not angry with you. I'm confused, but I'm not mad" Ian softly said, wrapping his arm around Melissa's waist.

This made me and Spencer glare at him in anger and frustration.

I swear I'm seconds away from beating the shit out of him.

"What I don't understand is why you came back to rosewood. You got away with it" Spencer angrily said.

"You're sick" Melissa scoffed.

"Melissa" me and dad said in warning tone.

"That's how I deal with this, dad. I have to believe you're ill" Melissa said.

"Melissa, stop, that's enough. Spencer isn't ill, she never was" I said, not letting go of my sister.

I love Melissa, I really do, but how the hell can she take Ian's side and not Spencer's. Or mine's.

I know that Melissa and Spencer don't have the best relationship, but still, family comes before anyone else.

"If you had just stayed away, no one ever would have known" Spencer angrily said.

"Now that's enough" Mom sternly said.

"The trophy wasn't real, but that doesn't mean that he didn't do it" Spencer said, glaring at Ian.

"Oh, my god, do you hear yourself?" Melissa asked.

"I'm just making things worse by being here. Spencer, I meant what I said" Ian said before leaving the house.

"Yeah right" I muttered angrily under my breath.

"Why can't you just let me be happy?" Melissa asked, glaring at Spencer.

"This isn't about you!" Spencer yelled, making me flinch.

"You're right. Like always it's about you. Ethan might hate Ian, but at least he's not accusing him of murder like you" Melissa angrily spat.

"Melissa" I sighed, but she shook her head and walked out of the house.

When the door shut awkward silence filled the room, nobody said anything, nobody knew what to say.

"Look, I know what this must look like, and-" Spencer started but mom cut her off.

"No. Honey, I don't think you do" Mom sternly said.

"No, what I think is that you guys should stop believing every lying crap that Ian says. And you're wrong about Spencer needing therapy, because she's not crazy" I angrily said.

I rolled my eyes and stood up, I grabbed my sister's arm and pulled her up with me.

"Come on" I whispered in her ear.

She nodded and let me guide her upstairs. She wrapped her arm around my waist and snuggled into my side.

"Thank you" Spencer whispered.

"Anytime" I whispered back, kissing her head softly.

At A Motel

After everything that went down at home Spencer didn't want to be near our parents, Melissa or Ian.

And me being me decided to leave with her, cause there was no way I was going to put up with them by myself. And I didn't want my sister to be alone either.

So, we decided we would stay at a motel for a while, to clear our heads.

And to my surprise Toby tagged along with us. Not that it bothers me, it feels nice to have my best friend slash brother figure come with us.

The three of us got out of the car as we walked to the trunk.

"Are you sure that you want to stay here?" Spencer asked.

"I can't handle another fight with Jenna, I don't want to go home until my parents get back. And I don't think your parents are gonna offer me the guest room" Toby said.

"It's my fault she's making your life so miserable" Spencer guiltily said.

"I didn't have to take her phone" Toby shrugged.

"How does she know it was you?" I asked, crossing my arms.

"She doesn't. But with Jenna, suspicion is enough" Toby sighed.

"I really am sorry" Spencer softly said.

"That's okay. My folks'll be back on Monday, and they're usually a decent buffer" Toby softly said.

"You never talk about your parents" I said.

"Neither do you" Toby said, looking at me and Spencer.

"Yeah, well, the house of Hastings isn't exactly my safe place to land right now, either" Spencer sighed.

"It might be my home but with Ian there, it's not my safe place either" I shrugged.

"I don't mean to sound rude, Ethan, but why are you here? Last I checked Spencer and your friends were called into the police station, not you" Toby said.

"I know, but after what my parents said to Spencer, suggesting that she should see a therapist, I just got so angry. I don't want to deal with them either and I couldn't let Spencer go on her own so I just left with her and here we are" I explained.

Spencer smiled and nodded, ruffling my hair.

I playfully glared at her and smacked her hand away, making her snort. I looked at Toby and saw him smiling at us.

He shook his head before looking at Spencer.

"Spencer, if Jenna has anything to do with you being framed, I'll do whatever I can to help you" Toby said, determination washing in his eyes.

I smiled at that, knowing how much he really cares about my sister.

Spencer noticed it too and blushed but smiled at him.

"Thank you" Spencer nodded.

Toby smiled before walking away. I smiled at the two of them before shaking my head.

"I'm going to go get a room for myself, since I know you and Toby are going to want to share" I smirked, winking playfully at her.

She blushed bright red at that and I turned around and walked away, laughing slightly.

At School

Me and Spencer went to school and we met up with Hanna.

The three of us walked inside and walked over to where Emily was.

"I can't believe that this is happening" Spencer said, clearly annoyed.

"Do you want us to talk to them for you?" Hanna asked as we made our way to Emily.

"What good would that do? They're taking Ian's side over Spencer's" I scoffed, rolling my eyes.

"Who?" Emily asked, confused.

"Spencer's parents think she's nuts" Hanna said.

"Unstable. And why should they believe me? I mean, we have no proof. I'm the girl who cried wolf" Spencer sighed.

"Yeah, they probably don't even believe me" I sighed.

"And the wolf is living in your backyard" Hanna said, looking at me and Spencer.

"Right, which is why we need to get into room 214" Spencer said, gesturing towards me.

"Spencer thinks Jenna has a room at the edgewood motor court" Hanna said and I nodded.

"Did you say 214?" Emily asked.

"Yeah and we saw the bag that Ian gave her. It's in the room" I said and Spencer nodded.

"Ok, I think we need to take a break from playing charlie's angels. I don't want to spend another night with the rosewood P.D" Hanna scoffed.

"Hey" Spencer said, running towards someone.

When she was gone I sighed and looked at the girls.

"And there goes Lucy Liu" I sarcastically said, earning snorts from Hanna and Emily.

Back At The Motel

I was currently in Spencer and Toby's shared motel room. We were just chatting, going over a few things.

Spencer was unpacking a few stuff she brought and placing them on her and Toby's shared bed.

I zoned out what they were saying because I was too focused on my phone. I was playing a game and I was so close to the last round.

But I snapped out of it when I heard a door from nearby close.

Spencer and Toby must've heard it too because they looked at me. Without hesitation we quickly ran out of the room to see who came out.

When we got outside we saw a cleaning lady coming out of the room, so we quickly walked towards her.

"Hey, did you just come out of room 214?" I asked.

The lady nodded and me and my sister looked at each other before looking back at her.

"Is there anyway that we can get in there?" Spencer asked.

"Is it your room?" the cleaning lady asked, confused.

"No, but we-" Spencer started but the cleaning lady cut her off.

"I've got work to do" the cleaning lady said.

She made a move to leave but I quickly walked over to her, taking my wallet from out of my pocket.

"Wait, um, for a 20. Can we pretend that he said yes?" I asked, sending her a small smile.

Luckily the woman accepted the $20 I gave her and let us into the room. The three of us quickly walked in, closed the door and began looking around.

"Spencer, Ethan" Toby said.

We both looked at him to see him crouching down while holding familiar glasses in his hands.

"Jenna's glasses. This is her room" Toby said.

"The bag was on the bed" Spencer said.

We began looking around, trying our best to find the bag. We weren't leaving the room until we found it.

Toby checked under the bed, Spencer checked behind a few things while I checked on top of the drawers. Inside them too.

My eyes wandered over to the closet and I quickly walked towards it. I opened it up and my eyes widened when I saw a familiar green bag.

"Guys" I said.

They both turned to me and quickly got up from the floor when they saw the bag in my hands.

I walked over to them, still holding the bag in my hands, and we all looked at each other before nodding.

We quickly opened the bag, only to sigh in annoyance when we saw nothing inside.

"Nothing" Spencer said.

"Great" I scoffed in annoyance, rolling my eyes before closing the bag.

Late At Night

It was getting late and I was in Toby and Spencer's room.

Toby was looking outside through the window, Spencer was lying on the bed playing scrabble and I was sitting on the floor next to the bed reading a book.

"Jenna might not even be here till morning" Toby said.

I sighed and shook my head as Toby walked back over to the bed. He sighed and sat down.

He looked down at the game she was playing and raised an eyebrow, clearly confused.

"Glyceraldehyde?" Toby asked.

I snorted at that and shook my head.

"With the 'c' on the double letter, It is 32 points. Plus the triple word score gets me 96 points" Spencer smiled.

I shook my head, I don't hate the game but I just never really understood it like Spencer.

I looked up and saw Toby began playing the game. After a few seconds he was done and looked at Spencer.

"Goofball. You can put down 104 points for me. Thanks for the 'g'. I've been waiting for it" Toby said, a small smirk on his face.

This made Spencer's eyes widen in shock as she sat up from the bed to look at the board.

I chuckled at Spencer's reaction before looking at the board myself.

"Eighteen points, times the triple word score, plus the 50-point bingo bonus" Toby said.

"That's my best friend" I smiled, patting his shoulder.

He chuckled and smiled at me while Spencer just sighed and nodded her head.

"Well. 104 points. Good for you" Spencer said, writing his score on the book.

"I like this game" Toby said with a small smirk.

I chuckled at that while Spencer softly scoffed.

It became silent for a few seconds before Toby broke it.

"I hope you don't take this the wrong way, But, you can't be comfortable In that jacket and that tie" Toby said, gesturing to Spencer's clothes.

This made me nod while Spencer frowned and looked at her clothes.

"I'm fine" Spencer shrugged.

"Yeah right" I scoffed, earning a smack to the arm.

Toby sighed and stood up from the bed. He began going through his bags before turning back around, holding a shirt in one hand and pants in the other hand.

"Top or bottom?" Toby asked.

This made Spencer's eyes widen and I saw I could see some blush on her cheeks.

"I'm just kidding" Toby chuckled softly.

He threw the shirt to her before turning around and heading to the bathroom.

I sighed and shook my head and went back to reading my book.

Although it was getting late and I should head back to my room. I was getting tired, especially after all that homework I did.

I closed my book and stood up from the ground. I turned to Spencer to bid her goodnight, only to stop when I saw her staring at something.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion and turned to where she was staring at.

I had to hold in my laughter when I realized she was staring at a shirtless Toby, before he walked further into the bathroom.

I couldn't hold it in any longer and released a small laugh, snapping Spencer out of her daze as she turned to me.

"Damn sis, falling for him so fast, aren't you?" I asked in a teasing voice.

This made her blush bright red before she grabbed a pillow and threw it at me.

I laughed even more at that while she groaned in annoyance and rolled her eyes.

"Shut up" Spencer scoffed.

"Never. You two have fun. But I swear I better not hear any moaning coming from here" I half joked.

This made Spencer blush even more and I quickly ran out of the room to avoid her throwing another pillow at me.

I laughed and shook my head and continued my way to my room to get changed and head to bed.

The Next Day

It was the next day and I manged to get some good night sleep in my motel room.

I was too lazy to change so I just left my room in my pajamas and headed to Spencer and Toby's room.

I quietly opened the door and closed it once I was inside. I turned around, only to see Spencer sitting up on the bed.

She turned her head to face me and I smirked when I saw the blush on her cheeks.

"Morning. How did you two sleep?" I asked, wiggling my eyebrows.

"Shut up, and good morning" Spencer said, rolling her eyes.

I chuckled at that and shook my head. It's so much fun to tease my sister.

Toby stirred in his sleep and Spencer quickly stood up from the bed, running her hand through her hair.

"Good morning, buddy" I smiled, patting his shoulder.

"Morning" Toby said, propping himself up with his elbows.

He sighed before looking at Spencer, a small smile making it's way onto her face.

"Hey" Spencer softly said.

"Have you been up all night?" Toby asked.

"Mnh-mnh" Spencer said, shaking her head while stretching her arms and back.

"I woke up a few minutes ago and decided to come here and check on you guys" I said.

Toby nodded at that but before he could say anything else we heard a sound coming from the room.

The three of us looked at each other and quickly ran out of the room to see what was going on.

When we got outside we heard a flute being played. We glanced at each other before walking closer to the room.

When we saw that the door was slightly opened we walked inside, trying to be quiet as possible, just in case.

We got inside and quietly shut the door. However, nobody was inside.

And the flute was just being recorded.

I sighed and shook my head, turning it off, not wanting to listen to it any longer.

"You're getting colder" Toby suddenly said.

"What?" me and Spencer asked, turning around to look at him with raised eyebrows.

We saw the bag on the bed and walked towards it. We looked inside and saw that it was filled with ice.

Not only that, but there was a note, and no surprise that it was from A.

"Who's A?" Toby asked.

Me and Spencer glanced at each other before I shook my head and looked at Toby.

"We have no idea" I shrugged.

It's not really a lie because we don't know who A is. But we don't need Toby to know that we're getting creepy messages from this A person.

A Few Hours Later

It was time for me and Spencer to head home. Toby was helping us with our bags and putting them in the trunk of the car.

I didn't really want to go home just yet, but we had to head home before mom and dad began to worry.

Toby's lucky, he's staying another night and doesn't have to head home.

"If it gets too uncomfortable at home, I'm here for one more night. You two can always come back" Toby said.

"I might actually take you up on that" Spencer said with a small smile.

"Same, I could use a break from family and the drama" I sighed, crossing my arms.

Spencer and Toby laughed at that and I joined in on the laughter.

The laughter soon died down as Spencer sighed and looked at Toby with apologetic eyes.

"I'm sorry this was a bust" Spencer said.

"It wasn't a complete wash. To be honest, it was really fun to kick your ass at scrabble" Toby smirked.

I let out a bark of laughter at that while Spencer looked shocked at what he said.

However, I stopped laughing when the smirk on Toby's face washed away and was replaced with a serious look.

I was confused and worried at first before he made his way towards my sister.

I thought he was going to hug her, but then to my absolute shock he pressed his lips onto hers.

My eyes widened and my jaw dropped at that, shock coursing all over my body.

Spencer looked taken aback at first, but then she slowly started kissing him back, closing her eyes.

I did nothing other than watch those two kiss, not caring that I was here, just caring about each other.

Soon they pulled away and smiles appeared on both their faces.

"I was...not expecting that" Spencer softly said.

"Me neither" Toby softly said.

"Me neither" I muttered under my breath, snapping out of my shocked state.

They slowly unwrapped their arms from each other and pulled away, the smiles never leaving their faces.

Toby held onto her hand for a little while before letting go as he turned around to head back to his room.

Spencer smiled before the smile went away and was replaced with a frown.

"Hey, it was not a complete ass-kicking, by the way" Spencer said.

"Goodbye, Spencer. See you later, Ethan" Toby smiled before he walked away and entered his room.

When he was gone I turned to my sister, only to see her smiling.

I smiled at her and decided not to tease her. I settled on wrapping her arm around her shoulder and pulled her closer to my side.

All she did was snuggle into my side and wrap her arms around me.

You know what, I'm glad Alex broke up with Spencer. It just means that Spencer and Toby have a chance to be together.

Back At Home

After we left the motel we made our way back home.

However, what confused us was the fact that there was a police car in the driveway.

We got inside the house and saw Melissa sitting by the kitchen counter, her hands clasped together.

"Why is there a police car in the driveway?" I asked.

"Did they talk to Ian? Did they find out that he was at Hilton head with Ali?" Spencer asked, setting her bags down.

"No. Because he wasn't with Alison, he was with me" Melissa said.

This made me and Spencer look at each other before looking back at her.

"He lied to protect me" Melissa said.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I was pregnant that summer, and...we went there to get an abortion" Melissa said, small tears streaming down her cheeks.

Our eyes widened in shock and our jaws slightly dropped.

"I lost the baby before we went to the doctor. That's why this baby is so important to me" Melissa said, putting her hand on top of her stomach.

While Spencer was in shock I was confused.

Why the hell is Melissa lying?

There's no way she was pregnant that summer, there's no way she would've done something like that.

Ian is clearly still getting into her head and making her lie for him.

I seriously want nothing more than to punch that asshole in the face.

We heard footsteps and turned around to see mom and dad walking in.

"Oh, spencer. We're trying to help you, but you need to start being completely honest with us" Mom sternly said.

"Police are waiting in the living room. They know you lied to them" Dad said.

"Honey, they know that you were seeing Ian" Mom sighed.

Both of our eyes widened in shock as we looked at each other before looking back at our parents.

My eyes wandered over to Garrett walking into the house, looking at Spencer with a sad look in his eyes, I couldn't tell.

Mom and dad lead Spencer out to talk to the police while me and Melissa remained where we were.

My phone rang and I had to hold in a groan, already knowing who it was from.

I took out my phone and looked at the message.

Spencer Hastings now a person of interest. In my death
