Chapter Thirty-Four: I Must Confess

Ethan's Pov

Me and the girls were at Hanna's house after she called us and told us that she couldn't find Emily anywhere.

She told us that when she woke up Emily was gone. Her phone was on her bed but she wasn't. She checked everywhere but couldn't find her and when she started getting scared she called us and told us to come over.

Me and Aria had rechecked the house to see if Hanna missed a spot but Emily was nowhere to be found.

Aria was looking through Hanna's closet while Spencer was on the phone with Emily's swim coach. Me and Hanna were pacing back and forth, I just got off the phone with Toby and he said Emily wasn't with him.

"Yeah, we weren't sure, we just thought that maybe she...yeah thanks" Spencer sighed before hanging up.

"What did the coach say?" I asked.

"She's not at swim practice" Spencer said.

"No, I told you. She's not allowed near the pool" Hanna said.

"Guys, all of her clothes are here" Aria said as she walked towards us.

"You think she did something crazy?" I asked, looking at all of them in worry.

"Like what?" Spencer asked.

"Like jump in her car and burn rubber till she hits Texas" Aria said.

"And leave everything behind? She didn't even take her phone" Spencer said, gesturing to Emily's phone in her hand.

"I wouldn't either if I were her. A had his, her, its hands around her neck and keeps reminding her" I said, clearly frustrated.

I tugged on my hair as Hanna let out a sigh.

"She hasn't slept in weeks" Hanna said.

"Who has?" Aria asked, sighing at the end.

I looked at Spencer and saw her looking at Emily's phone. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion when I saw her eyes locked on something.

"Hanna did you not see this?" Spencer asked.

Hanna raised an eyebrow at her before Spencer handed her Emily's phone.

When she saw whatever Spencer was looking at, her eyes widened in shock and her jaw slightly dropped to the ground.

"What? What is it?" I asked.

Hanna didn't say anything other than handing me the phone.

I took it and when I saw what she was looking at my eyes widened and my jaw dropped.

It was a picture of Aria and Mr. Fitz, making out who knows where.

"Is that you?" I asked.

I turned the phone around so Aria could look at it.

Aria's eyes widened as her cheeks turned red as she snatched the phone from me.

"Yeah, of course it's me" Aria said.

"Well, unless you're Aria's mom, just assume it's Spencer. You know, slutting it up" Spencer sarcastically said.

"When did she get that?" Aria asked.

I took the phone from her to look at the time on message.

"3:07 am and it came with a text. 'Clue Ella in and I'll let you out, A'" I said.

"Give me this" Aria said as she once again snatched the phone from me.

"Aria, chill. Emily would never send that to your mother" Hanna reassured her.

"Well, of course she wouldn't because she can't, 'cause we have her phone and she left in the middle of the night. Where the hell is she?" I asked, my voice filled with nothing but frustration.

The girls all shook their heads at that, not really knowing what to say.

Then an idea popped into my head. It might've been a stupid one but at this point we're running out of options.

I looked at the girls and saw that they were in the same boat as me as they turned to look at me.

Looks like we're all on the same page.

At Dr. Sullivan's Office

Yeah. So, we ended up going to Dr. Sullivan for help.

We asked her if we could talk to her and she agreed.

We told her about Emily and that we were worried about her. She let us in her office and told us we'd wait for Emily to arrive before starting.

Yeah, we were going to tell Dr. Sullivan about A.

No more lying or anything. It's time we tell someone about what's been going on. We can't continue like this. We have to tell someone and our best bet right now is Dr. Sullivan.

Me, Spencer and Aria were sitting on the couch while Hanna was sitting on a couch chair.

We heard a knock at the door as Dr. Sullivan walked towards is to answer it.

The door opened and from what I could see, it was Emily. Thank lords she's alright.

"Hi. I'm ready to talk" I heard Emily say, she sounded tired and out of breath.

"Good. Come in and join us. Your friends have been worried about you" Dr. Sullivan said.

Emily slowly walked in and when she saw us her eyes widened slightly. Dr. Sullivan closed the door behind her as Emily walked towards us.

"Em, why didn't you at least wake me? I was sleeping five feet away from you" Hanna asked.

"I can't keep asking my friends to take care of me" Emily sighed.

"Emily, look, if you were seriously thinking about going to Texas-" Aria started but Emily cut her off.

"I didn't have any plans. I just knew that the longer I stayed here, the worse it was gonna get. And I'm not gonna be used as a bowling ball to knock down my best friends" Emily explained.

"Emily, we're sitting here because of you. None of us think that you-" I started but she cut me off.

"That I'm the weakest link. Yeah, well, somebody else does" Emily scoffed.

Spencer opened her mouth to say something when Dr. Sullivan beat her to it.

"Who? Who's using you to knock down your friends?" Dr. Sullivan asked, looking at all of us in worry.

Oh shit, we completely forgot we came to her for help.

Me and the girls remained silent as we glanced at each other.

Spencer sighed and broke the silence as she looked at Dr. Sullivan.

"Somebody that's been trying to hurt us. For a long time" Spencer said.

Dr. Sullivan's eyes widened as she looked at the rest of us for clarification.

Me and the girls nodded and this made her more worried.

Well, here goes nothing.

A Few Minutes Later

We did it. We actually did it.

We told Dr. Sullivan about everything. Everything about A, we told her.

And can I just say that it felt so damn good to finally tell someone about A.

"When did these threats begin? Did the texts start coming after Alison's funeral?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

"Before" Emily sighed.

"At first we thought they were coming from Alison, but then they found her, her body" I said.

"And you don't have any clue who this A person might be?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

"We do, but" Hanna sighed as Spencer took over.

"We've been wrong before. A is an expert at making other people look guilty" Spencer said.

"Do we think this person goes to your school?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

"Maybe, but it's not like we go home and we're suddenly safe. A is everywhere, constantly on us. Like a shadow" I explained.

I sighed and laid my head on Spencer's shoulder. She kissed my head and laid her head on top of mine.

"And I'm the first person you've told about this?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

I swallowed a lump in my throat and slowly nodded. The girls following my lead.

"Why have you waited this long to say something?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

We didn't answer that. We couldn't answer that. We didn't really know what to say.

At School

After our talk with Dr. Sullivan we went to school and tried to carry the day out like any other day.

We were currently sitting at a table together while eating our lunch.

We noticed Jenna sitting at a table that was a few feet away from us and the girls couldn't help but spare her a few glances.

"You don't think we should have mentioned her?" Hanna asked, gesturing to Jenna.

"How could we without spilling everything about that summer?" Spencer sighed.

"It just kinda makes us look like we're making it all up" Aria sighed.

"Sullivan probably thinks we're insane" Hanna scoffed.

"Guys, after the fashion show, even our parents think there's somebody out there messing with us" I said and Spencer nodded.

"My dad still wants to sue" Hanna said.

"Sue who?" Aria asked, confused.

"Everyone" Hanna sighed.

I shook my head and began picking at my food, not really hungry anymore.

Hanna sighed and shook her head before turning to look at Spencer.

"Hey, did you bring them?" Hanna asked.

Spencer rolled her eyes before turning around as she started going through her bag.

"Bring what?" Aria asked, confused.

"I'm gifting Kate at the rehearsal dinner so she'll forget I talked smack about her and Isabel" Hanna explained.

Spencer handed her two books of horse pictures as Hanna took them from her and set them on the table.

"You're giving her a book of horse pictures?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

"Yeah, it's classier than a calendar" Hanna shrugged.

"No, classy would be buying something new, Hanna. She's gonna know that these are used" Spencer said in annoyance.

"No, she won't, and besides, you have a staff that dusts your books" Hanna scoffed.

I snorted at that while Spencer glared at me and hit my arm, making me roll my eyes at her.

"Oh, look, a horse doing a wheelie. Kate will love that" Hanna sarcastically said.

"Hanna, your step-sister was once trampled by a horse. Why do y-" Aria started but Hanna cut her off.

"It's not about her, ok? It's about my dad. We're finally getting along, and I'm not about to blow it the week he's getting married" Hanna said.

The girls sighed at that and nodded in understanding.

While I rolled my eyes and scoffed, still playing with my food.

It's fair to say that I still don't like Hanna's dad. Not after what he did to her mother.

I know that I should hate Mr. Montgomery since he did the same with Mrs. Montgomery, but to be fair I've always liked him more than Mr. Marin.

"It's not what we agreed on" we heard Jenna say.

We turned around to see her talking to someone on the phone.

"Do we think that she sent me that picture of Aria and Fitz?" Emily asked.

"Yeah, we think she had help from Garrett" Spencer said.

"Yeah, but why?" Aria asked, confused.

"It's not like torturing us is gonna give her back her sight. Plus, the person she really wants to hurt is already dead" I said.

"Yeah, well, she probably had help with that, too" Spencer sighed.

I groaned in annoyance and took a bite of my hamburger before setting it down.

"No wonder I didn't recognize you" we heard a voice say from nearby.

We tuned around and a smile appeared on my face when I saw Hanna's grandmother, Regina Marin, standing behind Hanna.

"Grandma" Hanna smiled.

"You have a salad in front of you. I've never seen you eat anything green before" Gran chuckled.

Hanna rolled her eyes at her but laughed as me and the girls joined in on the laughter as well.

"Howdy, kiddos" Gran smiled at us.

"Hey, Gran" me and the girls smiled.

We've always called her gran since that's what she wants us to call her. She says that she sees us like her own grandchildren and wants us to call her Gran instead of Ms or Regina.

I like her, she's really funny and cool to be around.

"What are you doing here?" Hanna asked.

"Don't we have a dinner to go to?" Gran asked, looking confused.

"That's tomorrow night" Hanna sighed.

"Yeah, well, I guess I just ran a couple stop signs, got here early. I need your house keys" Gran said.

Hanna nodded and began looking through her bag to take out her keys.

"They got a little girls' room near here?" Gran asked, looking at me and the girls.

"Yeah, it's just inside to the left" I smiled at her as the girls nodded.

"Oh, perfect. Hanna, come with" Gran said.

Hanna smiled at her and nodded as she got up from the table.

"She'll be right back. I just need to wipe the dew from my lily" Gran said.

This made me drop my fork as I gagged lightly in disgust while Spencer and Aria cringed at what she said.

Hanna's eyes widened as she shook her head at her.

"Ok, grandma, no. Walking now" Hanna said as she began dragging her away.

When they were gone I opened my water bottle and took a few sips from it.

"What does that even mean?" Emily asked, looking at us in confusion.

"It doesn't matter. I'm now officially done eating forever" Spencer said as she pushed her tray away.

I nodded and pushed my tray away too, no longer having the energy to eat.

Aria nodded while Emily let out a small chuckle and shook her head at us.

I turned around to see Jenna still on the phone. I sighed and turned back around to the girls.

"Maybe we should've skipped Dr. Sullivan and gone straight to the police" I suggested.

Emily nodded at that while Spencer shook her head.

"Garrett is on the force, Em. Jenna got there first" Spencer said.

I sighed in annoyance and put my head down while Aria patted my back, giving me some comfort.

The Next Day

It was the next day and we were all at school in the cafeteria because Dr. Sullivan was going to talk to all of us.

I was sitting with the girls as we all listened to Dr. Sullivan speak.

"The pressure you're under at this point can be overwhelming. Choosing the right college, getting in, leaving home, it can all be scary. A few weeks ago your principal asked me to come and talk about some of the tough choices you're facing. But how can you make any good choices, when you're not in a safe place?" Dr. Sullivan asked.

This made my eyes widen when I realized she was referring to me and the girls and A.

"Many of you don't feel safe. You feel like you can't make a move without someone judging you or challenging you. Or worse, threatening you" Dr. Sullivan said.

I swallowed a lump in my throat and took the opportunity to look around.

So far everyone seemed neutral. Except for Jenna, don't think I didn't see that small smirk on her face.

"Bullies have been around since the first caveman invented the club. When I was in school the attitude was, kids are cruel, but being roughed up a little built character. Today's bullies can cause a lot more damage. They have better weapons. They can keep hitting 'send' over and over, and hide behind the anonymity of a text or an email, which is about as cowardly as it gets" Dr. Sullivan explained.

What the hell is she doing?

I know she's not technically talking about A in front of the school but she's referring to A while sparing us quick glances.

"Would it be bad if we ran to the bathroom right now?" Hanna asked, whispering to me and Aria.

"Way bad" Aria whispered back.

"Why is she doing this?" Hanna asked, clearly frustrated.

"Shh" Emily whispered, sending her a pointed look.

Hanna rolled her eyes and leaned back against her seat as we went back to listening to Dr. Sullivan.

"These vicious attacks sent through electronic means may as well be carved in stone. If you think a college admissions board, not to mention a jury, won't examine the evidence, you're sadly mistaken. All it takes is for the victim to stop being afraid and decide to speak up. And speak out" Dr. Sullivan explained.

A Few Minutes Later

After Dr. Sullivan was done with her speech we were free to head home.

Right now me and the girls were outside, talking about what Dr. Sullivan said inside of school.

"Ok, am I the only one who thinks she's made things worse?" Hanna angrily asked.

"Why would it be worse?" Emily asked, confused.

"Because she just tore our clothes off, basically, in front of the entire school" Hanna angrily said.

"She wasn't betraying us, Han. This is someone trying to help us take down the enemy" I sternly but softly said.

Hanna scoffed and rolled her eyes as Spencer looked at her.

"Is your phone back on?" Spencer asked.

"Yeah, why?" Hanna asked.

"Well, Sullivan finished ten minutes ago, and we haven't heard from the beast. So that's progress" I explained.

"Or the quiet before the storm" Hanna sarcastically said.

My eyes wandered over to Aria and saw her staring at something or maybe someone.

"What are you looking at?" I asked.

"Hmm? Nothing. Look, Sullivan's right. It was time to speak up" Aria said.

We all nodded while Hanna shook her head, still angry.

We heard tapping noises and turned around to see Jenna walking out of school. We all moved away so she could get down the steps easier.

"I'll talk to you guys later" Aria said.

We all nodded but before any of us could leave Jenna turned around and spoke up.

"Aria? Did you go to the assembly?" Jenna asked.

"Yeah, we all did, Jenna. Why?" Spencer asked, crossing her arms.

"Just curious. What did you think of the shrink's speech? Too little too late, huh?" Jenna asked, chuckling slightly.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Aria asked.

"It's just a shame St. Sullivan wasn't around when your friend Alison was ruling these halls" Jenna scoffed.

This made the girls look at each other before looking back at her.

"It's a good thing we had Ethan, though. Because out of the rest of you bitches, he was the only one that defended almost everyone that Alison bullied. While the rest of you sat back and watch" Jenna scoffed.

The girls remained silent while I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms.

"I guess it takes one bully to know another, Jenna" Emily said.

Jenna's small smirk disappeared at that, knowing exactly what Emily meant by that.

"Could you please move your stick? There are people trying to get past you" Emily sarcastically said.

Jenna gritted her teeth before nodding her head as she moved her stick.

We all walked down the stairs as we went our separate ways.

Late At Night

It was late at night and me and Spencer were walking back into the house. I went to go get her from Toby's house.

Apparently her and Toby were in Toby's car when Spencer thought that Garrett and Jenna were in Jason's house. She went to go confront them but instead of seeing Garrett or Jenna, she saw dad.

Spencer told me that she tried getting answers from him but he refused to tell her anything. She kept on trying to get answers from him but dad suddenly snapped at her and began yelling. It got to the point where Toby had to take her away. Most likely so they could both calm down.

When Spencer was calm enough to head back home Toby texted me. I thanked him and now taking Spencer home.

We both walked into the house and closed the door.

We walked into the kitchen, only to stop when we saw dad in the living room, sitting on the couch.

"Still wanna talk?" Dad asked, turning to look at both of us.

"Dad, I'm sorry that I ran away. I just-" Spencer started but dad cut her off.

"Do you guys remember Alison's grandmother, the one who moved down South?" Dad asked.

Me and Spencer glanced at each other, confused, before looking back at him.

"We never met her, but, yeah, Alison talked about her. Why?" I asked.

"Well, she passed away a few months after Alison disappeared, and the DiLaurentises needed an attorney. The old lady had money, a lot" Dad said.

He sighed before getting up from the couch as he walked towards us.

"And apparently, a week before Alison went missing, her grandmother amended her will, cut Jason out of it" Dad explained.

"What does this have to do with you?" Spencer asked, confused.

"Jason's parents begged me to change the date on the former will, the one where the old lady left everything to both grandchildren" Dad explained.

"Because?" I asked.

"They didn't want their son to look like the number-one suspect. They had a daughter who was presumed dead, and a son who suddenly looked like he had real motive" Dad explained.

This made my eyes widened as me and Spencer looked at each other.

Flashback
Nobody's Pov

Ethan was currently at Hanna's house, along with Spencer and Alison.

Hanna's grandmother, Regina Marin, was at the house making some chili as Ethan, Spencer and Hanna helped her.

Alison was sitting on the kitchen stool and watched them all work on the chili.

"My mother pours wine in her chili" Alison said.

"I bet she does. Where's the vinegar?" Regina asked.

Ethan looked around before spotting the vinegar. He grabbed it before turning to Regina.

"How much of it do you need?" Ethan asked.

"Well, that depends. Anybody here got a bun in the oven?" Regina asked.

"What?" Spencer asked, confused.

"Ugh, Gram, gross enough?" Hanna gagged before walking away to grab something.

"Well, I'm just saying, four tablespoons and you go into spontaneous labor. How do you think I got your father to evacuate?" Regina asked.

This made Ethan and the girls laugh.

"It's no joke. Tom was trouble from the start. It was passing a frozen turkey. Patrick was just the opposite. He just fell out like a gumdrop" Regina sighed.

Ethan and Hanna chuckled at that while Spencer continued helping with the chili.

"Was Patrick your favorite?" Alison asked.

"I don't have favorites, but if I did I wouldn't tell you" Regina said.

"Would you ever disown any of them? Your children?" Alison asked.

Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked at her in shock and confusion.

Ethan raised an eyebrow at his best friend. Why would she ask something like that?

"I don't own anybody. There was a war that took care of that. Read a book" Regina sternly said.

"But I'm curious. What would it take for you to really cut the cord? What if you found out that one of your grandkids was, like, plotting to sell a family heirloom and use the money to buy drugs?" Alison asked.

Spencer looked at Ethan, confused and a bit worried.

Ethan looked at his sister with the same reaction, confused and a bit worried.

"If anybody I was related to was that deranged, then, yes, our family tree would get some serious pruning" Regina said.

She wrapped an arm around Hanna and smiled at her. Hanna smiled back at her and giggled before Regina looked back at Alison.

"Are you writing a story or something?" Regina asked.

"Yeah. Something like that" Alison said with a tight lipped smile.

Flashback Ends
Ethan's Pov

"That's why she went down to Georgia, to get her to change that will" Spencer said, her eyes wide in realization.

"Who?" Dad asked, confused.

"Alison. And then she must've rubbed it in Jason's face the night that she disappeared. That's why he killed her" Spencer said.

"Wait, what are you talking about?" Dad asked.

"Yeah, Spence, what are you talking about?" I asked.

"And be very careful what you say" Dad sternly said.

"We should be going to the police right now" Spencer said.

She turned around and started walking towards the door but I quickly grabbed her arm, stopping her.

"Spencer, we're not going to the police about this ever" Dad sternly said.

"Yeah, we're not gonna do that. We're not gonna turn Jason in for something he didn't do" I said.

"Ethan, dad, why are you two protecting Jason?" Spencer asked, shocked and confused.

"I'm not" Dad sternly said.

"I don't care if he is or isn't. I'm protecting Jason because I know he's not like that. I know he would never hurt Alison, let alone kill her. He's my best friend, he would never do something like that. I just know it" I sternly said.

"Yes, you are" Spencer said, looking at dad.

"No, I'm protecting myself. I could be disbarred just for touching that will" Dad said.

"So why would you do it? Why would you break the law for them?" Spencer asked.

"It's complicated" Dad sighed.

"No, why? What does the Dilaurentis family have on us? Why do you seem so tense everytime Jason or any of the other Dilaurentis family is brought up?" I asked, crossing my arms.

I seriously want to know what the hell dad is hiding. Why is he so scared and worried whenever that family is brought up?

Why does he seem to have a hatred towards Jason and Mrs. Dilaurentis?

"I think I've answered enough questions for one night" Dad said.

He turned around and walked away to head to his office, leaving me and Spencer alone.

I groaned in annoyance before throwing myself onto the couch, completely tired and frustrated.

A Few Hours Later

A few hours had passed and I was still lying on the couch, watching videos on my phone.

Spencer was sitting on the couch, reading a book. We both needed something to take our minds off the conversation we had with dad.

My phone rang and I saw it was a message from Emily.

SOS! Head to Dr. Sullivan's office now!! She knows who A is!!

My eyes widened in shock and my jaw dropped. I quickly sat up from the couch and looked at Spencer.

She looked up at me with wide eyes, her phone in her hands.

Without any hesitation we both jumped up from the couch and grabbed our things before running out of the house to get in the car.

At Dr. Sullivan's Office

When me and Spencer arrived we met up with the other girls and quickly walked inside so Dr. Sullivan could tell us who A was.

However, when we got inside, it was completely empty. Dr. Sullivan was nowhere to be seen.

"Dr. Sullivan!" I yelled.

The girls began looking around, trying to find her, but she wasn't here.

"Guys, where is she?" Aria asked, worried.

"Ok, are you sure that she said to meet her here?" Hanna asked, looking at Emily.

"I'm positive. She said meet in her office" Emily said.

"So, where is she?" Hanna asked.

"She's not here" Aria said.

Soon all of our phones rang and we all glanced at each other, already knowing who it could be from.

We quickly took our phones out to look at the message and my heart dropped when I saw it.

"The doctor is out. A" Spencer said, looking up from her phone.

I swallowed a lump in my throat as I put my hand on my stomach, feeling sick all of a sudden.

What the hell did A do to Dr. Sullivan?
