Chapter Seventy-One: I'm Your Puppet
Ethan's Pov
I don't know how they did it but the girls managed to get themselves into Radley to visit Spencer.
Meaning we're all going to get to see her together.
The nurse gave us all passes before leading us inside to where Spencer was.
"You have visitors. Spencer?" the nurse asked.
Spencer didn't answer. She remained silent.
"I'll be in the hall if you need me" the nurse said.
We smiled and politely nodded at her and watched as she walked away.
We all sat next to each other, across from Spencer, who still stared at us with no emotions.
"Hey. You knew we were coming, right? I spoke with mom" I softly said.
"We wanted to be here the first day. But she said you were going to be home tomorrow, so..." Emily trailed off.
"She still believes that? She thinks that I'll be able to sleep through the night if I just take a nice bubble bath and lay in my own bed?" Spencer sarcastically asked.
"I think what she wants is..." Emily trailed off, unsure of what to say.
"I know what she wants, but they don't make a loofa that scrapes out the inside of your head" Spencer said.
Aria, Emily and I remained silent. We didn't know what to say.
"The park rangers found a body" Hanna spoke up.
Spencer's head snapped towards her while the three of us glared at her.
"Hanna!" we yelled at her in unison.
"What? The sooner she knows, the sooner she checks out of this place" Hanna deadpanned.
"What Hanna is trying to say is we have good news. They found a body in the woods. The police believe it was a camper" Emily explained.
"It was Toby" Spencer said.
"No, Spence, it wasn't" Aria softly said.
"This person, he'd been missing for awhile and he was nowhere near where you thought you saw" I softly said.
"I know what I saw. It was Toby" Spencer sternly said.
Oh god...she still believes that Toby is dead.
We're trying to tell her that the body that was found wasn't Toby, but she still believes it is.
"Hey, so, um, I was thinking tomorrow night when you get home, we could all..." Aria trailed off.
"I need to stay here. I need more time" Spencer shook her head.
"Time for what?" Hanna asked, clearly annoyed.
"Hanna" Emily sternly said.
"Shuffling around in Mona's old slippers isn't going to get her any better" Hanna angrily said.
"Hanna, chill" Aria sternly said.
"You know what, I would not dine here, if I were you, I had to sneak around in that kitchen, and I saw a roach big enough to wear an apron" Hanna angrily said.
I slammed my fist onto the table, causing the girls to flinch.
Spencer, however, didn't make any movements.
"Moving. On" I gritted my teeth.
I get she wants her out as much as we do, but she needs to dial it back a little.
Hanna, sparing me a glance, shook her head and looked back at Spencer.
"You are not crazy. This place is. I'm too tired to have this fight right now, guys" Spencer shrugged.
She stood up from her chair and began walking away, only to stop.
"I feel safe here. Those bars don't just keep you from getting out, they keep other people from getting in" Spencer explained.
She spared me a glance, a faint smile on her face, before walking away to head back to her room.
The Next Day
The girls and I met at school to discuss the body that was found in the woods.
Emily and I stood by Aria's locker as we watched her gather her things.
"Can't you just ask your mom for a copy of the coroner's report?" Aria asked.
"Aria, the report doesn't say not Toby, it says John Doe" Emily sighed.
"And either way, it's not going to change Spencer's mind" I sighed, shaking my head.
We heard a phone ring and we saw Emily looking at her phone, a frown on her face.
Aria and I glanced at each other before looking at her in confusion.
"Who's that?" Aria asked.
"Um, Shana" Emily said.
The faint blush on her cheeks made me more suspicious.
"Why does she keep texting you while Paige is out of town? Is she into you?" I asked.
Emily glared at me and opened her mouth to say something when Hanna walked towards us.
"Sorry you guys, Caleb had a lot to share" Hanna said.
I smiled and nodded.
Hanna smiled before her eyebrows furrowed in confusion when she saw the blush on Emily's cheeks.
"Why are you blushing? Why is she blushing?" Hanna asked, looking at Aria and I.
"Shana's cruising her, and I think that she should shut it down before it turns into ex and the city" Aria explained.
I snorted in amusement as she closed her locker as the four of us began walking.
"Guys, I'm not thinking about Shana" Emily sternly said.
"And either way, lets forget about Shana. We need to help Spencer" I said.
"No, bubs, you saw her face. She's not getting out of there unless we kidnap her" Hanna scoffed.
Honestly, that plan has been stuck on my mind for a while.
It doesn't seem too bad...
"Or we actually take the body there and prove to her it isn't Toby" Aria sighed.
All of a sudden Emily stopped walking, causing the three of us to stop and look at her.
Oh no, please don't tell me she's suggesting that we do just that...
"Em, that's not a real option" I sternly said.
"No, but, taking a picture of it is. And we've been to that morgue before, what's stopping us from going back?" Emily suggested.
"Um, do we really have to answer that?" Aria asked.
While we do want to convince Spencer that Toby isn't dead, do we really want to break into a morgue?
Do we even want to take a picture of a dead man?
At The Morgue
The girls would be in charge of sneaking into the morgue, pretending to be nurses.
I couldn't really dress up as a nurse or doctor so I just settled with wearing all black, at least wanting to look the part.
Aria and I would be in charge of keeping watch while Hanna and Emily would be sneaking inside to see the body.
The four of us got off the elevator once we reached the floor.
Aria clung onto my arm as we walked, clearly a bit frightened just by being here.
"Ok, who are we supposed to text if I see someone?" Aria asked.
"Me. Not Hanna. We're using her phone to take the picture" Emily explained.
I nodded and turned to Hanna, only to see her on her phone, clearly distracted.
"Buttercup, pay attention" I sternly said.
Emily nodded as Hanna looked up as she got off her phone.
"What? I'm sorry. My boyfriend's dad got nailed for stealing. Where do you sell a hot bell, anyway?" Hanna asked.
"Hanna, focus. I don't want to be in there any longer than we have to. We find John Doe, we take the picture, and we get out of here" Emily explained.
Seems easy enough. At least I hope.
"If it's bronze, you probably melt it down first" Aria said.
"Melt it into what?" Hanna asked, confused.
"Why are we still discussing bells?" I asked in frustration.
"Because Caleb thinks his dad is a Saint, and I know he's selling pieces of our church online" Hanna snapped.
"Ok, forget it. I'll do this alone" Emily rolled her eyes.
She went inside and Hanna made a move to follow her, but she hesitated.
Aria and I nudged her, causing her to glare at us before rolling her eyes as she entered the room.
Aria and I leaned against the wall, we're going to keep our guard up, but we are bored.
We waited for a good few minutes before peeking through the window of the door, trying to see what they were doing.
We heard a noise, causing Aria to squeak quietly before gripping onto my arm.
I patted her head and began walking, trying to drown down the slight nervousness that I felt.
We both jumped and turned around when we heard the elevator ding.
We looked up at the mirror and our eyes widened at what we saw.
It's redcoat...
"Oh my god" I muttered.
We didn't waste time running after redcoat, wanting to find out who they are before they made their escape.
However, by the time we made it to the elevator, the doors had already closed.
"Shit, we were so close" I groaned.
We would've been able to find out who was under the mask, but we missed our chance.
We heard footsteps and we turned around to see Emily and Hanna running towards us.
"Guys, we gotta go! Now!" Hanna yelled.
Aria and I glanced at each other before pressing the elevator button so we could get on and then get out.
The Next Day
Alyssa's Pov
I'm currently outside of the school building, sitting at one of the tables, reading a book.
I've been assigned to do a book report of the book I'm currently reading, it's a three page essay.
I'm almost done with the book, meaning I can get started with the writing part.
All of a sudden I felt a hand on my shoulder, causing me to look up.
"Oh, hey, Hanna" I smiled.
"Hey, Alyssa. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you" Hanna said.
"Oh, don't worry, you're fine" I reassured her.
She smiled and nodded before taking a seat across from mine.
"So, what are you doing?" Hanna asked.
"I'm just trying to finish this book. I have to do a report and the writing part is going to be long" I sighed.
"Well, that's better than me studying for algebra to do my make up test in 10 minutes" Hanna rolled her eyes.
"Don't worry, I understand your pain. Algebra sucks" I nodded.
"Thank you" Hanna grinned.
I grinned back at her before the both of us let out soft laughs, shaking our heads in amusement.
"Well, Ethan is going to come by later, he's going to walk me to my next class" I smiled.
"He loves being with you and doing all these things for you, huh?" Hanna asked.
"He sure does" I nodded.
I'm just so lucky to have him as my boyfriend. He's just so sweet and so protective.
"You know, I wanted to say thank you" Hanna said.
"For what?" I asked, confused.
"You've made Ethan happy. He's never been interested in dating but when he met you he clearly fell head over heels. He cares about you more than anything. I love seeing him so happy" Hanna softly smiled.
I've heard that from a few people by now.
I've always heard people gossip about Ethan and I being in a relationship.
Apparently, so many girls and a few boys tried getting his attention, but he never once looked their way.
I honestly feel lucky I snagged someone as amazing as him.
"Well, he makes me happy the same way I make him happy. So, I'm glad we've found each other" I softly smiled.
Hanna smiled and nodded before her face turned serious.
I gulped slightly, especially when she leaned in closer to me.
"However, I want to make one thing clear" Hanna said.
"And that is?" I asked, trying not to sound scared.
Although I will admit that Hanna is scary, especially when it comes to the people she cares about.
"I may like you, but Ethan is my best friend, my brother in everything but blood. If you hurt him I'll personally kill you with my bare hands. Do I make myself clear?" Hanna sternly asked.
"Yes mam" I nodded.
"Good. So, there'll be no issue" Hanna smiled brightly.
Her mood changes really are impressive...
Scary, but impressive.
My eyes wandered behind her and a smile appeared on my face when I saw Ethan walking outside, talking to Caleb.
"Well, my dear boyfriend is here, so I gotta go" I smiled.
"Alright, have fun" Hanna smiled.
I softly chuckled and nodded before gathering my things as I made my way towards Ethan.
The second my boyfriend saw me a smile appeared on his face and he walked towards me.
I giggled when he brought me into a kiss, cupping my cheek with his hand while I wrapped an arm around his neck.
We pulled away when we heard a throat being cleared, we turned around and saw Caleb staring at us in surprise.
"Jeez, how much did I miss?" Caleb asked.
"Alot" Ethan and I said in unison.
"Well, Caleb, I'd love to reintroduce Alyssa Taylor. Not only is she my friend, she's now my girlfriend" Ethan grinned.
I smiled softly at him and nodded my head.
Caleb shook his head, snapping himself out of his shock, before a grin appeared on his face.
"Congrats, man. I'm happy for you" Caleb grinned.
He brought Ethan into a tight hug, causing him to chuckle before hugging him back.
I smiled at the two of them before they pulled away from the hug.
"Well, we'd love to stay and chat more, but we've gotta get going" Ethan smiled.
"Indeed we do" I smiled.
"Alright, well have fun" Caleb winked at us.
Ethan and I blushed as we rolled our eyes, we held hands before making our way inside.
Late At Night
Ethan's Pov
Hanna and I were at Aria's house as Aria and I stared at Hanna's phone.
So, it turns out, Caleb's dad was innocent after all. He never stole anything.
A framed him.
I honestly want to be surprise, but I can't, but that doesn't stop me from being angry at A for framing Caleb's dad.
"So, basically A was framing Jamie the whole time?" Aria asked.
Hanna frowned and nodded as she took her phone back.
"Do you think that the bill from the collection box was..." I trailed off.
"Don't you? Caleb is never going to forgive me" Hanna groaned, placing her hand on her forehead.
I feel bad for her and Caleb.
They both thought Jamie, Caleb's dad, had stolen from the church but he never did.
"Where is he now?" I softly asked.
"He went to go find Jamie. But even if he does, what is he supposed to tell him?" Hanna asked.
"He may just have to find a way to tell him the truth. Caleb's familiar with the workings of A" Aria said.
"So is Ezra. Do you plan on telling him who bought his kid a big, fat balloon today?" Hanna asked.
Oh, yeah, I also forgot to mention that A kidnapped Ezra's son.
Don't worry, he's fine and unharmed, but it got Aria all worked up and scared.
I opened my mouth to say something when we heard knocking at the door.
We turned around when we saw the door open and we immediately stood up from the couch when we saw Emily rush inside.
It looked like she ran all the way here, based on her heavy breathing and her messy hair.
And why does it look like she's been crying?
"It was the wrong body" Emily spoke up, shutting the door behind her.
"What?" Aria asked, confused.
"The John Doe, the one in the mask. It was the wrong one" Emily said.
"Emily, you're not making sense" I frowned.
"They just found a body tonight. In a shallow grave out in the woods" Emily explained.
Hold up...what...?
"Where?" I hurriedly asked.
"Exactly where Spencer said it was. They found her purse close by" Emily explained.
Aria and Hanna's eyes widened in shock while I remained frozen where I stood.
Oh my god...
Oh god...please don't tell me that Spencer was right the entire time...
"Bubs, are you ok?" Hanna softly asked.
I shook my head, feeling my breathing become heavier and my knees felt weak.
I felt myself becoming lightheaded, my knees grew more weak and I felt my body swaying back and forth.
I tried to keep myself up, but I felt weak, and before I knew it I found myself slowly dropping to the ground.
"ETHAN!" the girls screamed.
Hanna instantly rushed to my side, grabbing onto me, she held onto me tightly as we both sunk to the ground.
Hanna cradled me in her arms while Aria rushed to get some water and Emily was crouched in front of me.
The only thing on my mind is Toby...
Was Spencer right all this time? Is he really dead?
