Chapter One: The Beginning

Late At Night
Ethan's Pov

Smiling to myself, I closed my book and set it down on my bed.

I grabbed my black leather jacket, the same leather jacket that Alison got me when she returned home.

Once it was on, I left my room and headed downstairs. Once I got downstairs, I grabbed a bag of chips for Hanna before quickly leaving the house.

I smiled to myself as the wind blew in my face, I breathed it in for a bit before letting it out and quickening my steps to head to the barn.

When I got close to the barn, I heard music and laughter. I already knew that Spencer and the girls were in there. The only reason I'm a bit late was because I promised mom I would finish the book I've been reading during the summer before heading to the barn.

And since I didn't want to make mom angry, I decided to spend all day reading the book, that way I would be done with it and still get to have fun.

I opened the door and stepped inside. I looked around to see that my sister and the other girls were there.

With the exception of Alison.

"Hey, sorry I'm late" I said.

I quickly closed the door and walked over to the girls, who had stopped laughing and talking to turn to look at me.

"Hey bro, where were you?" Spencer asked, raising her eyebrow at me in a slightly suspicious way.

I fondly rolled my eyes at my twin sister and made my way towards Hanna.

I sat down next to her and almost immediately she snuggled into my side. I smiled softly at her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, kissing her head. Not in a romantic way, in a brotherly way.

Hanna is the most sweetest girl you'll ever meet. When me and her met, we immediately became best friends and got along. We were basically the same person.

But the problem was that she gets targeted the most by Alison. Mostly because of her weight.

I don't understand why Alison bullies her. Hanna may not be skinny like the other girls, but that doesn't mean she isn't beautiful.

Hanna is beautiful both inside and out. She's super sweet to all the girls, but mostly to me. I guess it's because I'm the only one in this group that defends her whenever Alison makes fun of her.

I constantly have to control myself from slapping Alison whenever she decides to mock Hanna.

Some may say that I'm protective of Hanna because I like her, but that's not the case.

I'm protective of her because she's my best friend, she's like another sister to me.

I'm protective of all the girls, especially Spencer. They're all my best friends, Spencer being my twin sister.

If something were to happen to any of them, there would be hell to pay.

"Sorry, but remember mom wanted me to finish that book before coming here" I said.

"Ah, right" Spencer nodded, understanding.

I chuckled and shook my head at her.

I let out a small 'oh' sound before taking the chips out of my pocket and handing them to Hanna.

"Here you go buttercup" I smiled.

Hanna smiled brightly and took the chips from me.

"Thanks bubs" Hanna squealed.

I giggled and nodded at her. She kissed my forehead before snuggling back into my side, opening the bag and started eating.

I fondly shook my head at her before gesturing for one of the girls to turn the music up.

Aria nodded and tuned the volume up.

Some people find it weird that I'm in a group that's full of girls. People at school think it's weird, but I don't.

I don't give a shit what others think. Let them say what they want to say, it doesn't effect me.

I don't care if I'm friends with all girls.

I hang out with who I want to hang out with, nobody tells me what to do. And they most certainly don't tell me who I can or can't hang out with.

I don't take anyone's bullshit, especially Alison's.

Shaking my head, I gestured for Emily to pass me a cup of vodka.

She nodded and handed me one. I nodded to her as a thanks and started drinking.

The girls went back to talking to each other, laughing about whatever they were talking about. I doubt they made any jokes, no offense but most of their jokes suck.

Then all of a sudden the lights and music turn off, causing all of us to stop what we were doing and sit up straight from where we were.

"What happened?" Hanna asked.

She put the bag of chips to a side and gripped onto my arm.

"It must've been the storm" I said and Spencer nodded.

Then we heard a sound from outside, like a creaking sound. Due to the sound, it startled all the girls, while I made sure my guard was up.

"Something's out there!" Aria whisper yelled to us.

Then the door slowly started to open, causing the girls to let out small yelps in fear as they all turned to look at me.

"Bubs!" Hanna whisper yelled at me.

I immediately stood up and grabbed the baseball bat that was nearby.

The girls followed my lead and stood up, huddling around me.

Hanna and Spencer stood at both my sides, gripping onto my arms in fear.

"Stay behind me" I whispered to them, causing them to nod almost immediately.

Slowly and slowly I started walking towards the barn door, the girls following me as Hanna and Spencer still gripped onto my arms.

Although they were scared, I had a slight feeling as to who it was.

But just in case I'm wrong, I want the girls to stay near me at all times.

Nobody hurts my best friends or twin sister on my watch. No way in hell.

I slowly started walking closer towards the barn door. Emily had grabbed a flashlight from nearby and was pointing it towards the door, that way we could see.

Thank you Em.

We were startled by a bottle crashing outside. I gripped onto the baseball bat tighter, Hanna and Spencer gripping onto my arms with all their strength.

I shook my head and walked a bit faster, wanting to get this over and done with. Especially if this was just a prank from Alison herself.

"Gotcha!" Alison yelled, jumping into view.

Upon her surprise entrance, the girls all jumped and let out loud frightened screams. Me on the other hand, I let out a relief sigh and put the baseball bat down.

I swear this girl is going to give me a heart attack one day.

"That is so not funny, Alison!" Spencer yelled in a stern way, not at all amused.

"Yeah, I was about ready to hit you with my baseball bat" I said, glaring at her.

All Alison did was smirk and shrug, making me laugh and soon the girls all followed my lead and started laughing as well.

Alison closed the barn door and walked inside and started heading towards the couches.

I set the baseball bat back where it was as we all walked back to the couches to sit back where we were before.

Me and Hanna sat down in our previous places. Me wrapping an arm around her shoulders and her snuggling into my side.

"Ali, did you download the new beyonce?" Hanna asked.

"Not yet" Alison said, shaking her head and putting her phone away.

"I'm loving her new video" Emily smiled, curling up in a cushioned chair.

I smiled fondly at her and shook my head. While Alison smiled at her, not in a friendly way, a smug way.

"Maybe a little to much, Em" Alison said.

While the girls laughed, Emily's smile disappeared and she shifted in her seat, clearly uncomfortable.

I turned to glare at Alison, making her roll her eyes and put her hands up in surrender.

Alison smiled and grabbed a cup, turning to Aria and handing it to her.

"Your turn" Alison said.

Aria giggled and nodded as she took the cup and started gulping down on it. This made me and the girls laugh as I shook my head at her.

"Be careful Aria, take to much you'll tell us all your secrets" Spencer smiled, giggling at the end.

"Friends share secrets, that's what keeps us close" Alison smiled.

The girls look at her and smiled back. While I slightly rolled my eyes at that and just shook my head.

"Drink up!" Alison grinned, gesturing for Aria to finish her drink.

Aria giggled slightly before continuing her drink, making me laugh.

"Ethan, drink up!" Alison smirked.

I smirked back at her and nodded, taking the cup in my hands and taking a big gulp. I will never get tired of drinking vodka, or anything else for that matter.

A Few Hours Later

I woke up to someone shaking me. I groaned in annoyance, refusing to open my eyes since I was still really tired and my head hurt like hell.

"Bubs, bubs wake up" I heard Hanna say.

I groaned in annoyance before having enough strength to open my eyes. My head was pounding and it felt like it was on fire.

I turned my head around to see Hanna hovering above me, worry shown in her eyes.

"Buttercup, what's wrong? Why did you wake me up?" I asked, slowly sitting up.

"Where's Ali and Spencer?" Hanna asked.

This caught my attention and I quickly sat up, ignoring the pounding in my head.

"What are you talking about?" I asked.

I looked around, only to see that Alison and Spencer were missing. Only me, Hanna, Aria and Emily were here. Aria was standing up while Emily was slowly waking up.

"What the hell? Where is my sister? Where's Ali?" I asked.

I slowly stood up from the ground, nearly falling to the ground, but I made sure to keep my balance.

"We don't know" Aria said.

She turned around and slowly started walking towards the barn door, which was already open.

Did Alison or Spencer leave the barn door open before they left?

"Ali!" Aria yelled, slowly quickening her steps.

"Spence! Sis!" I yelled.

I quickly walked over to Aria, nearly falling on my way there. Once I was there, I stood next to Aria and started looking around.

Then all of a sudden we heard footsteps and a shadow came into a view. Before I could grab my baseball bat, we realized it was just Spencer.

I sighed in relief, knowing that my twin sister was alright.

Thank heavens, I don't have to beat someone up.

However, when I got a good look at Spencer, I could tell that something was wrong.

And the fact that Alison wasn't there with her, made me even more nervous.

"She's gone" Spencer said.

This made me and Aria look at each other before looking back at her with raised eyebrows.

"What do you mean she's gone?" I asked.

"I've looked everywhere" Spencer said, walking closer towards us so she could be inside the barn instead of standing outside.

Worry and fear grew inside me and I clenched my fist at my side.

"I think I heard her scream" Spencer said, nearly in a whisper.

That night was the night that Alison went missing.

That night was the night that everything changed.
