Chapter Nine: Please, Do Talk About Me When I'm Gone
Ethan's Pov
Me and the girls were at mine and Spencer's house, getting everything ready for Alison's memorial that's coming up.
Me, Spencer and Aria were pushing a large box into the living room where Hanna and Emily were.
"I was afraid she wouldn't get it done in time for the memorial" Aria said and I nodded.
"And this was someone from your mom's gallery?" Emily asked, standing up from the couch.
We stopped pushing the box and panted, already tired.
"Right" Aria nodded.
"There's an apartment above the gallery. So she's staying there. For now" Aria said.
"Kind of weird, isn't it? Your mom moving out" Hanna said, looking at something she was reading, I think it's blueprints.
"Yeah, like my dad should have left. That's what you'd expect" Aria said, clearly annoyed and angry.
Hanna looked taken aback by her tone while I lightly smacked her arm.
"Aria" I said in a warning tone.
She sighed and looked at Hanna with apologetic eyes.
"Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. The whole thing just sucks" Aria groaned.
"I know" Hanna nodded.
"Did anyone call Shelly Leonard?" I asked, wanting to change the subject.
"Done. I told her that if she plays anything depressing, I will kick in her cello" Spencer said, making all of us laugh.
"Oh, what about the program?" Aria asked.
"Almost done. But we should finish it before Ali's brother gets here" Spencer said.
I honestly can't remember the last time I saw Jason, but he's a really good and chill dude.
We've hung out a few times. And he told me that I was the only one he liked out of the girls because I would tell Alison to leave him and his stuff alone.
And although he might not have said it to me or Alison, I feel like he liked Aria too. But liked her as something more.
"When is that?" Aria asked.
"Tonight. And he wants to see us in the morning" I said and Spencer nodded.
Hanna put the paper down and stood up and walked over to us as we were getting the nails off the box to open it.
"God, you know what? I barely remember Jason" Hanna said.
"We didn't know him. He was just Ali's older brother down the hall" Aria shrugged.
"Behind the closed door" Spencer said.
"With his hardcore-punk music vibrating the floor boards" Emily smirked.
This made them laugh while I rolled my eyes but chuckled either way since it was pretty funny.
"How did he get into an Ivy League school?" Aria asked.
"I don't know. It must've been affirmative action for goths and emos" Spencer scoffed, shaking her head.
We all managed to get the nails off and we lifted the lid from the box and set it down on the ground.
When we looked inside, we all smiled at the beautiful sculpture inside.
"Wow. It's beautiful" I smiled.
"Pedestal's already out there, next to the bench. This goes up Friday morning" Spencer said and we all nodded.
"Do you think Jason will like it?" Emily asked.
"Of course he'll like it" Hanna said in confidence.
I smiled softly at her and nodded. I wrapped an arm around her shoulder and gave her a brother kiss to her head.
She smiled and snuggled closer to my side.
"You know, years from now, people are gonna see this memorial, and that's all they'll ever know about Ali" Aria softly said.
"She'll be the girl that they dedicated the bench to. And we'll all be gone, but Ali will still be remembered" I softly smiled.
"That's immortality, my darlings" Spencer said and we all nodded, still staring at the beautiful sculpture inside the box.
Flashback
Nobody's Pov
The girls and Ethan were all at the beach. The girls were in their bikinis while Ethan was wearing his black swim shorts and a black tanktop.
The girls and Ethan were sitting on chairs while Spencer was lying on the ground.
"I wish we could just choose the age that we wanted to be and just stay there" Aria sighed.
"The only way to do that is to die young. Leave a beautiful corpse" Alison smiled.
"Don't joke" Emily sternly said.
"It's not a joke" Alison said, raising an eyebrow at Emily.
The girls and Ethan gave her pointed looks, making her sigh in annoyance.
"Oh come on. Haven't you guys ever thought about how deliciously tragic it would be to die in some incredibly mysterious way? That would be superior" Alison smiled.
"Is that really how you wanna go, Ali?" Ethan asked, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Not just yet" Alison shrugged, flashing him a small smile.
"Don't talk like that" Hanna said.
"It's gruesome" Aria nodded.
"It's not gruesome. It's immortality my darlings" Alison smiled, winking at all of them.
Flashback Ends
Ethan's Pov
I sighed at that memory and leaned in closer to Aria's side, making her giggle as she gently patted my cheek.
"Where did she get that from, a movie?" Aria asked, curiosity taking over.
"Ali was a movie" Spencer said.
"Damn right" I nodded.
The Next Day
Morning came by quicker then expected and before we knew it Jason was already at mine and Spencer's house.
We were all here, except for Hanna, but she texted me saying that she would be here soon.
We were in the kitchen discussing things with Jason.
"You've done a great job. Really. Mom and Dad and I are really grateful" Jason smiled at me and the girls.
We all smiled at him and nodded.
He opened his mouth to say something when the door opened, revealing Hanna, as she walked inside.
"There she is" Jason smiled, looking at Hanna.
Hanna looked shocked before she smiled at him.
"Jason. Uh, hey. Sorry I'm late" Hanna said, going up to Jason and giving him a hug, one that he returned.
"No problem. I was saying you've done some lovely work on the memorial" Jason smiled.
Hanna nodded and walked over to us and sat next to me as we continued where we left off.
"I might've done one or two things differently. We can adjust that along the way" Jason said, looking at Spencer.
She smiled at him and nodded but I'm not sure if it was a real or fake smile.
"Here's a copy of the program for the dedication" Jason said, passing a paper over to where Emily and Aria were.
"Oh, I emailed you the program that we worked up" Spencer said.
"Right. I saw the draft. This just fine-tunes it" Jason said.
I think it's fair to say that my sister looked a bit annoyed, I shook my head at that and sighed.
"Let's see. If Shelly Leonard's gonna play something, I don't think we can give her more than three minutes. I remember she's somewhat of a showboat with that cello" Jason said.
Me and the girls gave him half smiles and chuckles, but you can tell that things were getting a bit awkward.
I looked at Spencer, to see that she was annoyed.
Jason spotted a picture of Alison, one that we all chose, and he picked it up.
"Oh. Is this the picture for the program?" Jason asked and we all nodded.
"Yes. It's everybody's favorite" I said, earning nods from the girls.
Jason nodded and looked down at the picture, me and the girls glanced at each other nervously, scared that he might not like it and want to change it.
"It's the one I would have picked" Jason said.
We all sighed in relief and nodded, sending him small smiles.
"I thought I was gonna be able to get my whole family out here but, you know, at the last minute, my mom, um..." Jason said, clearly awkward and a bit uncomfortable.
We all looked at each other, not really knowing what to say or do.
Jason chuckled and shook his head.
"It's crazy talking about this, isn't it?" Jason asked.
We all nodded, me sending him a small smile for some comfort.
"When I think about her, I think about you. The six of you in her bedroom, laughing, keeping secrets. Long time ago" Jason smiled.
He then looked at me and chuckled, shaking his head.
"It surprised me at first when Alison became best friends with you. A boy. I mostly thought her entire friends would be girls. But she proved me wrong when she became best friends with you. She really cared about you" Jason explained, smiling softly.
I smiled softly at him and nodded in understanding.
When me and Alison became best friends, I was surprised too.
I never thought she'd want to be best friends with a boy. All of her friends were girls. But when we met, we instantly got along and grew close.
She didn't care that she was best friends with a boy when the rest of her best friends were girls. She didn't care about what other people said, like always. And it warmed my heart to know she cared about me that much.
"I want each of you to speak. I'd rather hear from you than Miss Slocomb from the PTA" Jason said, taking a sip of his coffee.
"The PTA was a lot of help" Spencer defended.
Jason nodded and cleared his throat.
"What about the rain?" Jason asked, making all of us raise an eyebrow at him in confusion.
"The rain?" I asked.
"Forty percent chance before the weekend" Jason said and Spencer's eyes widened in realization.
"Oh, uh, they said that we can use the school's multipurpose room if we have to move the ceremony inside" Spencer explained.
"Great" Jason nodded.
He sighed and walked over to the other side of the kitchen.
"People think this dedication is about closure. There won't be closure until they find out who did this to Alison" Jason said.
We all glanced at each other before glancing back at Jason.
"The cops in this town have been jerking my family around for more than a year. No more of that. I'm here to get some action, and this memorial is gonna help me get it" Jason explained.
I smiled at him and nodded in understanding.
"Oh, and I'm adding one speaker to the program" Jason said, grabbing a pen and bending down to write down something on the paper.
Emily glanced down at the paper and she looked at him with wide eyes in shock.
"Jenna Marshall?" Emily asked.
This made all of our eyes widen in shock as we stared at him in disbelief.
"You want Jenna to speak at the dedication?" Hanna asked.
"That's right" Jason nodded.
"Why?" Aria asked.
"She asked me if she could" Jason shrugged.
"Jenna asked to speak?" Emily asked, trying to find out if what he was saying was true.
"Is there a problem?" Jason asked, confused and a bit suspicious.
I cleared my throat and quickly stepped in, not wanting to cause any problems.
"It just didn't occur to us that Alison and Jenna were that close" I said and the girls nodded.
"I didn't know either. Jenna called and said my sister was a lot of help to her after her accident" Jason smiled.
We all glanced at each other before glancing back at him, not knowing what to say.
"Well, concentrate on what you're gonna say. Leave the rest of it to me" Jason said, putting his stuff into his bag.
I smiled at him and nodded, rubbing my arm.
"Now I'm going to have a talk with Detective Wilden and find out why they haven't located Toby yet" Jason said.
And now I want to smack him upside the head for saying that.
Spencer nodded and got up from her seat and led Jason out of the house. When they were gone, Hanna turned to look at us, clearly confused, shocked and angry.
"Did we just get fired?" Hanna asked.
"Shh! Keep it down" Aria said and I nodded.
"Why is he talking to Jenna?" Emily asked.
"I don't know" I said, rubbing the back of my neck.
"What does she have to say?" Emily nervously asked.
"This is turning into a nightmare" Aria groaned and I nodded, rubbing my eyes.
Spencer walked back in and we all looked at her for some answers.
"What else did he say?" Hanna asked.
"Nothing. Just kept smiling like he was running for office" Spencer scoffed.
"Spence, why does Jenna wanna speak at the dedication?" Aria asked.
"And why does Jason want her there? He clearly knows they weren't friends" I said, earning nods from the girls.
I mean I'm not trying to be that dramatic about the situation, but even I can agree with the girls that Jenna and Alison weren't close at all.
If anything they hated each other, Alison more then Jenna.
"We can't let Jenna speak" Emily said.
"How are we gonna stop her without looking like bitches?" Aria asked.
"How're we gonna stop her at all? In case you didn't notice, we just got patted on the head and sent off to play" I scoffed.
Hanna sighed and shook her head, looking at me and Spencer.
"You know what, you both need to stay on top of him, find out what's going on" Hanna said.
"Why us?" Spencer asked.
"Because you're both the big organizers. You've got the laptop of all knowledge, and he's gonna need some of that" Aria explained.
Me and Spencer glanced at each other before looking back at the girls.
"Jenna could get up there, she could tell about the fire and Toby. She could tell about everything" Emily explained.
"Yeah, except Ethan will be in the clear because he wasn't there that night" Hanna said.
I groaned in annoyance and rested my head on Spencer's shoulder.
I heard sigh in annoyance as she rested her head on top of mine, both of us clearly tired and annoyed.
At School
After talking with Jason, we all went to school.
And as usual, classes were boring and all the work we were given was complete bullshit as well. I seriously hate school.
It was nearing the end of the day and we just had a few more classes to deal with before we could head home.
I was walking with Aria, we were both talking about the memorial that's coming up soon when she suddenly stopped to look at something.
I raised an eyebrow at her and turned to see what she was looking at.
Concern flashed through my eyes when I saw Emily sitting outside by herself, looking like she wanted to cry.
Me and Aria glanced at each other before walking towards the door that leads to the outside and walking towards Emily.
"Em?" I asked, gaining her attention.
She turned to look at us and her eyes were slowly becoming red, confirming that she was very close to crying.
"It's my dad" Emily said.
This made our eyes widen in worry, thinking that something bad happened to him.
"God, is he okay?" Aria asked.
But then to our confusion, Emily smiled, her smile being one of happiness and not sadness.
"He's okay. He's better than okay. They're rotating his unit out of Afghanistan. My dad's coming home" Emily explained, the smile still on her face.
This made our worries wash away and was now replaced with happiness and relief.
"Em, that's amazing, I'm so happy for you" I smiled.
I walked over to where she was and sat down next to her, I placed my bag on the ground and engulfed her in a tight hug.
She giggled and hugged me back, resting her head on my chest. I felt some of her tears get on my shirt, but I didn't care.
I chuckled and placed a brotherly kiss to her head. I smiled when Aria joined in on the hug.
The Next Day
At School
It was the next day and the day of the memorial was coming up.
Me, Spencer, Emily and Jason were just getting out of the Principal's office after talking to him about the memorial.
We were now walking the hallway together while talking.
"Well, that was painless" Jason said.
"Not for Principal Hartman" I scoffed, rolling my eyes.
"He means well, but he needs to know who's in charge" Jason said.
"I think we all know that" Spencer sighed in annoyance.
This made me lightly smack her arm while Jason stopped walking and turned to her with furrowed eyebrows.
And just by looking in his eyes I can tell that he was annoyed and frustrated.
"Okay, is...is there a problem?" Jason asked.
"There's no problem. You're Alison's brother. You should have the final say. But you're not the only one dealing with this" Emily explained.
Spencer nodded while I just shrugged and ran my hands through my hair.
"See, there's that closed door again. The secrets of the girls cuddled up in Alison's bedroom" Jason said, his tone showing some annoyance.
I honestly get the feeling that he still doesn't like the girls, but is trying his best.
"But unlike you girls, Ethan never had any secrets of his own to hide" Jason said, pointing a finger at me.
I just nodded, a bit awkwardly, and rubbed the back of my neck.
I mean, the only secret I know is what Alison told me. That Jenna was forcing herself onto Toby. But even if I told the girls, they wouldn't believe me.
They still think Toby is the bad guy, they think that he's the one that killed Alison.
Other then that, I don't know any other of Alison's secrets, and I most certainly don't have any to hide either.
"Do you think that means you knew her better than I did?" Jason asked my sister and Emily.
"No. It just means we knew her in a different way" Emily said and Spencer nodded.
My eyes then wandered over to Detective Wilden and a police officer as they made their way to Toby's locker.
"What are they doing?" I asked.
Jason and the girls turned to see what was going on and they were all confused too.
"That's Toby's locker" Emily said.
Jason started walking towards them and we followed behind him, wanting to know what the hell they were doing.
"Detective Wilden" Jason said as we made our way towards them.
Detective Wilden looked at us and he gave us a small smirk.
"Ah, you'll find this interesting. We're having a look in Toby Cavanaugh's locker" Detective Wilden said.
"Why? Do you think he's hiding in there?" Jason asked, in a joking way but I could also hear some seriousness in his voice.
Detective Wilden gave him an unimpressed look and shook his head.
"He's a suspect" Detective Wilden said.
Suspect my ass. Toby's a victim.
"Well your investigation better turn up more than Toby Cavanaugh's old gym socks" Jason said.
"You made it clear you weren't happy with the pace of the investigation" Detective Wilden said, handing something to the police officer that was with him.
No shit, especially when they're going after the wrong person.
"You said you wanted action. I'm trying to give that to you" Detective Wilden said.
"Yeah, you've got nothing. I realized that yesterday" Jason shot back.
"Sometimes, Jason, we withhold information on the progress of an investigation to avoid any interruptions" Detective Wilden explained, already getting annoyed.
"The only reason you're tearing this kid's locker apart is because he's not around to object" Jason said.
"Toby called your sister's cell phone the night she disappeared. I checked the phone records. She took the call" Detective Wilden said.
This made me and the girls glance at each other while Jason looked a bit shocked by that.
"Toby called Alison the night she died?" Emily asked.
"He did. Or somebody else did using his phone" Detective Wilden said.
Ok, I can understand why they have Toby as a suspect, but I still believe that he's not a murderer.
He's just a kid trying to get his life back on track. And considering what's going on at the moment, that's impossible for him.
Back At Home
Me and Spencer were at home with Jason, trying to make sure that everything would be ready for the memorial.
Spencer was on her laptop, checking for the weather to see when it would rain or if it would rain at all.
"You were right about the weather. Rain starting at midnight, continuing throughout the day" Spencer said and I nodded.
"I wish this was gonna be outside, in the sun" Jason sighed, putting his stuff down and picking up his glass.
Me and Spencer glanced at each other before glancing back at him.
"Are you satisfied?" I asked.
"Yeah. How about you two?" Jason asked.
"We'll just be glad when this is over" Spencer said and I nodded.
"Are we talking about the dedication or finding out what happened to Ali?" Jason asked.
"Both. I guess" I shrugged.
"Dedication will be fine. Thanks to you two. And I lit a fire under the cops" Jason smiled.
We both gave him small smiles and nodded before Spencer decided to bring up Toby.
"Did you know that Toby called Alison?" Spencer asked.
"No. Wilden shouldn't have told me, but he was easy to shake up. Like most bullies" Jason explained.
We both nodded and got up from the couch and walked into the kitchen.
I picked up my granola bar while Spencer picked up her cup of tea.
"You two were the only ones who ever really challenged Alison" Jason said.
This made me stop eating my granola bar and Spencer stop drinking her tea as we turned our heads to look at him.
"I remember hearing the two of you getting in each other's grills a couple times. Kept waiting for the cat fight, but never happened" Jason explained.
I let out a small chuckle that that, but that earned me a nudge from my sister.
I rolled my eyes and turned to look at Jason. He looked at me and smiled.
"Ethan, you were the only one that ever had the balls to stand up to Alison. She would always make fun of people, call them names and trash talk them. You were the only one that defended them against her. It was clear that you weren't at all scared or intimidated by her like everyone else" Jason explained.
I chuckled at that and shook my head, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Alison may have been my best friend but she was a bitch at times. I'm sorry to say it like that but you have to admit it's true" I said.
"It's fine, I get it" Jason nodded, chuckling slightly.
"I hated how she treated people and called them hurtful names. And I was raised to be better than that, which is why I never hesitated to stand up for them. I wasn't going to let Alison get away with that" I explained.
Jason smiled and nodded at me. I can see admiration and proudness in his eyes.
Spencer smiled softly at me and kissed my cheek before turning around to look at Jason.
"Who do you think killed Alison?" Spencer asked.
"Police like Toby Cavanaugh. If they can't find him, they'll start liking someone else" Jason shrugged.
"Just someone, or someone in particular?" Spencer asked.
"Does it really matter?" Jason asked.
"I thought you said you wanted closure" I said, clearly confused.
"My mom still needs pills to get to sleep. When they don't work you can hear her walking around the house at 3 in the morning. You think you're ever really gonna have closure?" Jason asked.
Spencer looked down at her feet while I shrugged.
"Aren't you always gonna be the friends of that girl who was murdered?" Jason asked.
"Just like you'll always be her brother" Spencer said.
"That's how people will see us. They solve it or they don't, that's not gonna change so I guess it doesn't really matter" Jason shrugged.
"But what about justice?" I asked.
"You don't really wanna bring justice into this, do you?" Jason asked, but he was mostly looking at Spencer when he said that.
"Why not?" Spencer asked, clearly confused.
"Alison told me about the fire" Jason said, getting up from the couch.
My heart stopped as my eyes widened in shock. I turned to look at Spencer, to see that she was staring at him in shock.
Alison told Jason about the fire, seriously?
"About how you said the five of you should all go over and teach Toby a lesson. How you got the stink bomb and convinced the rest of the girls to back you up. How you even threatened Toby if he told the truth" Jason explained.
He walked closer towards her and I immediately scooted closer to my sister.
I mean, Jason might be my friend but Spencer is my sister, my twin sister for that matter, and I won't allow anyone to hurt her.
"Alison told you that?" Spencer asked.
"Yes, she did" Jason nodded.
"Did you believe her?" Spencer asked.
Jason didn't say anything, he remained silent and took a sip from his drink. It was silent for a few seconds before Spencer broke it.
"You are just like Alison, aren't you?" Spencer asked.
"In some ways, even worse" Jason said.
He left a few minutes later and when he was gone Spencer immediately called the girls and told them what happened.
They all arrived an hour later and we were now in the living room.
"And so she tried to pin it on you?" Hanna asked and Spencer nodded.
"That's what she told Jason" Spencer said.
"But why you?" Emily asked in confusion.
"Because Spencer could stand up to her, and Alison didn't like that" Aria said.
Spencer sighed and nodded as she sat down on the couch.
"But Ethan stood up to her, hell, he stood up for everyone Alison ever made fun of or called names" Hanna said.
"That's different. It's clear that Ali liked Ethan more than the rest of us because he was never afraid of her, not like we were. Ali must've respected that and still saw him as her best friend and not a rival" Aria explained.
I sighed and nodded, it was true.
"God, this is officially insane" Hanna groaned, flopping down on the other couch.
"Is that what she told Jenna when she was at the hospital?" Emily asked.
"I don't know. I mean, I don't think so, but I don't know" Spencer said, running. her hands through her hair.
Emily sighed and sat next to Hanna on the couch, with Aria standing behind them.
"Okay, so one minute, she's trying to cover it up and the next, she's ratting us out to her brother?" Aria asked.
"Like she wanted Jason to know the fake story in case anything happened to her" Emily said.
"Why?" Hanna asked.
"So they'd know who to blame" I sighed, rubbing my eyes.
"God. This is still Alison's movie, and we're just filling up the screen" Aria scoffed.
We all nodded as I groaned and shook my head, trying to get rid of a headache that was coming in.
This just keeps getting worse.
The Next Day
Today was the day of the memorial and we were all a bit nervous yet happy at the same time.
We were waiting this day for forever and the time has finally come.
Me and the girls were sitting together, inside the school. Everyone was here, sitting as well, wearing nice clothing and holding the papers that we made.
Spencer made her way to stand behind the podium. She looked at us and smiled before her eyes wandered somewhere else.
I was confused when her expression changed to happy from shocked.
Me and the girls glanced at each other before turning around to see what she was looking at.
My eyes widened at who I was seeing.
Ian Thomas. Melissa's ex.
Why the hell was this heart breaker here?
"Ian" Aria whispered.
"Wait, Melissa's Ian?" Hanna asked.
"That's the one" I scoffed, glaring at him in anger.
Spencer cleared her throat and we all turned back around to hear what Spencer was going to say.
She closed her book and pushed it aside as she cleared her throat once more and began talking.
"I can't remember not knowing Alison. Not having her as a friend. She was the first person I knew long enough that I felt I could be angry with without worrying that I was gonna lose her. It made me feel like something was gonna last. And you need that. Yeah, especially when you're a kid" Spencer said.
Me and the girls smiled at her and nodded.
"She would've liked that you were all here. She would've liked the attention. No, actually, she would've loved the attention. It would've made her laugh. And Alison laughing that was amazing" Spencer chuckled.
Me and the girls released small chuckles at that.
It was true, Alison did love the attention.
After Spencer was done with her speech, she went to sit down and it was time for Hanna to say hers.
"Friends can be hard on you. Maybe they expect more from you than strangers. Strangers pretty much see you the way you want them to see you but you can't fool friends. That's what makes them friends" Hanna smiled.
We all smiled at her and nodded.
Hanna walked back over to her seat and now it was time for Emily to say hers.
"That corner of the park is gonna be a safe place where you can go and sit read a book and just think. You should think about Alison while you're there. She'd wanna make sure you didn't forget about her" Emily softly said, a smiled appearing on her face.
I chuckled at that and nodded.
Even in death Alison would make sure nobody forgets about her. That's just how she is.
After Emily was done, it was Aria's turn to say her speech.
"When you do something like this, well, a memorial it's partly because you don't understand what's happened. So you plant flowers and you paint tiles and somewhere in the middle of all that work, you stop crying. I guess that's the point" Aria softly said.
I smiled softly at her when I heard her voice crack just a bit at the end.
When Aria made her way back to her seat, I realized that it was my turn. And I had to admit that I was a bit nervous.
Spencer smiled softly at me and slid her hand into mine, giving it a gentle squeeze.
I smiled softly at her and nodded, telling her thanks.
Taking a deep breath, I made my way to the podium. I looked at everyone and took another deep breath, clearing my throat and began talking.
"When I first became friends with Alison, I was taken aback by her confidence. She introduced herself to me with no fear or nervousness in her voice whatsoever. Growing up, we grew close, we did everything together. And even though she made friends with my sister and the other girls, we would still be close and continue to do everything together" I softly said.
A small smile made it's way onto my face as I tried my best not to cry.
"It warmed my heart whenever Alison said that she didn't care what others thought about her being friends with a guy. That's what we had in common. We didn't take anyone's bullshit" I chuckled.
This earned laughs from nearly everyone in the room, making me smile.
"Alison is and will forever be my best friend. It hurts knowing that she's gone, that she was taken away from me too soon. But, something I've learned is that although she may be gone, she will never be forgotten. And this memorial is something that will help us always remember her" I softly smiled.
I didn't hold back my tears anymore. A few of them escaped my eyes and streamed down my cheeks.
I nodded at everyone and quickly walked down to head back to my seat.
When I sat back down, I was immediately engulfed in a tight hug by all the girls.
I chuckled and hugged them back, thankful for the comfort.
When we pulled away from the hug, I cleared my throat and wiped my tears away.
Then came the part we were all waiting for. It was time for Jenna to say her speech.
Jason got up and helped Jenna to the podium. When she was there, he walked back to his seat and flashed her a small smile.
"We think we know who we are, but we don't. Not until something bad happens to us. And then all the useless things fall away, and we're left with who we really are. I learned that from Alison DiLaurentis. My whole life, I thought I knew who she was. But I found out the truth when she came and talked to me at the hospital" Jenna said.
I glanced at the girls and I saw that they were all nervous, scared that everything would be revealed.
I might not have been there that day, but considering Detective Wilden is there, I don't think there's anything I can do to stop him from arresting my sister and best friends.
Since I was sitting in between Hanna and Aria, I slid both my hands into theirs and gave them a gentle squeeze.
They both gripped onto my hands tightly, waiting for Jenna to reveal everything and prepare for what was about to happen.
"I found out that she was the strongest person that I had ever met. And it's her strength that touched so many people, shaped them. That's her real legacy. That's how her memory will endure. In the actions of those she inspired in so many different ways. From all of us, thank you, Alison" Jenna softly said.
Me and the girls quietly sighed in relief.
Thank the lords Jenna didn't say anything.
Back At Home
After the memorial was over, me, the girls and Jason went back to my house. We all walked inside and made our way into the kitchen.
"I need sugar" Hanna said, sitting down.
"Me too" Aria nodded.
"I'm buying" Spencer said, making her way to open the fridge.
When me and the girls sat down, Jason walked over to us.
"That was my folks. They say thanks. So do I" Jason said, flashing us all small smiles.
"You're welcome" Emily softly said, nodding at him.
"And I want you guys to have something" Jason said, taking something out of his pocket.
He set it down on the kitchen counter and when we all looked at it, our eyes widened in shock.
It was Alison's bracelet. The same damn bracelet that we found in the woods.
"The police returned this to my family. I think you should have it" Jason said.
"The police gave that to you?" I asked.
"Alison was wearing it" Jason nodded.
"Wait. You mean when they found her?" Hanna asked.
Jason nodded, making all of us glance at each other in confusion yet slight fear.
"After listening today, I just thought you should have it. I'll be in touch" Jason said, looking at me and Spencer.
We both nodded at him and with that he left our house.
When he was gone, we all immediately looked at each other.
"If that's Alison's bracelet, what about the one we found in the woods?" Emily asked.
"I don't know" Aria shrugged, looking at the bracelet.
"Someone made a copy of Alison's bracelet" Hanna said.
"Yeah, and made sure that we would find it" Spencer said.
Great, just great.
Shit seriously just got alot more real.
