Chapter Fifty-Five: Crazy

Ethan's Pov

The girls and I were currently walking in town as we were heading to the brew.

Hanna was telling us about how Detective Wilden came over and talked to Hanna and wanted to get her blood sample

Apparently Hanna's blood type matched the one on the charm anklet.

"That's why A wants Garrett out of jail, so I can take his place" Hanna said.

"Ok, buttercup, don't go there" I softly said.

"It's already past there, bubs. He knows about the note, he caught me at church, and it's my blood type" Hanna said, clearly frustrated.

"So what? You didn't kill anybody" Aria said.

"Wilden said that Ali's family's been slamming him. Have either of you talked to Jason?" Hanna asked, looking at me and Spencer.

"No, I can't even look him in the eye" Spencer sighed.

"Me too. But, Spence, if you're not up for it I can talk to him alone, today" I said.

Spencer sighed and nodded her head.

It's fair to say that neither of us want to talk to Jason because we're ashamed of how everything turned out when we turned in the anklet.

"Han, don't worry, there's nothing they can do until your mom gets back tomorrow" Emily said.

"So what? I have 48 hours left of freedom?" Hanna sarcastically asked.

"Maybe Spencer and Ethan's mom can block the court order" Emily suggested.

Spencer and I looked at each other and shrugged. That's not a bad idea.

"You guys, what if it is my blood?" Hanna asked, clearly nervous.

"How? Seriously, how could somebody take your blood and you wouldn't even know it?" Aria asked, confused.

"Emily has a whole night that she doesn't remember" Hanna angrily said.

She scoffed and shook her head before she began walking ahead of us.

"Han, wait, you need to-" Spencer started but Hanna cut her off.

"I can't talk about this anymore. I have to go to school" Hanna sighed before walking away.

We all looked at each other and sighed before walking towards the brew. I opened the door and let the girls walk in first before walking in myself.

"Maybe one of us should call her mom" Emily suggested.

"I don't think her mom can have anymore pull with Wilden. This isn't shoplifting" Spencer said.

I snorted slightly at that but nodded my head because, it's true.

"Take it from me, you're always better off with a really good lie" a girl's voice said.

Wait...?

Why does that sound familiar?

"Is it just me, or did that sound a lot like..." Emily trailed off.

We turned around to see a girl standing near the counter, we couldn't see her face but she had blonde hair and wore a long pink dress.

"Alison" all of us said.

The girl turned around when she saw us staring at her, causing her to raise an eyebrow at us.

"Something wrong?" the girl asked.

We quickly snapped out of it and walked closer to the girl.

"Oh, no. Sorry. Wow, you just sound alot like one of our friends" Aria said.

"Hope she's brilliant. What's her name?" the girl asked.

"Alison Dilaurentis" Aria said.

The girl's face fell and she scanned all of us, complete shock shown in her eyes.

"You were friends of Ali's. Me too. I'm Cece" the girl, Cece, said.

"Spencer" Spencer said.

"Ethan" I said.

"Melissa Hasting's little sister and brother. The twins" Cece said.

She turned to look at me and scanned me up and down, a flirty smile appeared on her face.

"Ah, Melissa always said you were a handsome young man, guess she wasn't lying after all" Cece flirtatiously smiled.

I blushed bright red at that and cleared my throat, feeling a bit uncomfortable.

"Ali talked about you. She talked about all of you. Alot" Cece smiled.

"How do you know Ali?" Emily asked in curiosity.

"Before I moved to L.A, our families rented summer homes in cape may. We went through an intense couple weeks together. I dated her brother, Jason" Cece explained.

Wait a minute?

This is Cece. This is THE Cece Drake.

I remember Jason telling me about a girl he dated back in highschool. He seemed to really like her but they had a bad breakup.

"She never mentioned me to you guys?" Cece asked.

"No" all of us said.

"Well, it was intense for me. She was going through such a rough time, like a broken doll" Cece said.

"So why did you move back to Rosewood?" Spencer asked.

"Listen, I hate to make tracks, but I'm already late, and my boss is high-strung and aggressively sober. Come visit me at the new boutique. Across the street" Cece said.

We all nodded in understanding before she turned to Aria.

"Oh, and if you ever feel like doing. A little free shopping, I'll be happy to turn the other way" Cece smiled.

"I-I think you're thinking of Hanna. She's not here" I said.

Cece just smiled at me before turning around and leaving the brew.

When she was gone I released a huge breath that I didn't even know I was holding. I turned to the girls and saw that they were in the same boat as me.

"Ok, that's not just me, right? I mean, that chick is freakishly like Ali" Aria said.

"Or was Ali freakishly like her? I mean, one hip out, the head tilt" Spencer said.

"Looking straight through you, like she knew all your secrets" Emily added.

"Not to mention she freaking flirted with me" I said.

The girls all gave me 'seriously' looks while I held my hands up in defeat.

"What? Her flirting made me a bit uncomfortable. And besides, I have my eyes set on someone else" I huffed.

My eyes widened when I realized what I said. I looked at the girls and tried to defend myself, but it was too late, they were already smirking at me.

"Oooh and would that someone be a girl called, Alyssa?" Spencer teasingly asked.

"I think it is, don't you?" Aria teasingly asked, looking at Emily.

"I sure do" Emily teasingly smirked, winking at me.

"I hate you guys" I groaned.

They all burst out laughing and I just turned around and walked to the register. I just needed some coffee.

At School

When I got to school I met up with Alyssa at the courtyard. We were both sitting at a table together.

Alyssa was working on some homework she needed to finish. While I was lost in my own thoughts, still thinking about Garrett's case.

I still can't believe that the blood on the damn anklet wasn't Garrett's.

Whose blood is it if it's not Garrett's?

I know for a fact that it wasn't Hanna. She didn't kill anyone, that's for sure.

But how the hell did her blood type get on the anklet?

I can't believe Jason, Spencer and I went through all that trouble for nothing. Turning in that anklet did nothing at all.

And instead of Spencer and I helping Jason we ended up making things worse.

Honestly, could things get any worse?

"Ethan?" I heard Alyssa call out to me.

I snapped out of my thoughts and turned around to see Alyssa staring at me with furrowed eyebrows.

"Uh...what's up?" I asked.

"What's up? I've been calling your name for the past two minutes" Alyssa said.

"Oh, sorry, my bad. I was just thinking" I said.

"About what?" Alyssa asked.

"The case against Garrett Reynolds" I said.

"Garrett Reynolds? As in the ex-police officer that's accused of killing Alison Dilaurentis?" Alyssa asked.

"Yep, that's the guy" I nodded.

Alyssa hummed at that and nodded her head, tapping her pencil on the table.

"Can I ask you something?" Alyssa asked.

"Sure, what is it?" I asked.

"You, your sister and your friends seem to be so invested in this case. Any reason why?" Alyssa asked.

I pressed my lips into a thin line and looked down at my hands, playing with my fingers.

Should I tell her?

I mean, we've known each other for quite some time, and we already know a little bit about each other.

I told her alot, well not alot, about me. She told me alot about herself. I think it's only fair I do the same.

"Alison Dilaurentis was the queen bee at this school. Everyone either feared her, envied her or loved her. She was also our best friend" I explained.

"Oh" Alyssa said, setting her pen down.

I nodded my head and sighed, running a hand through my hair.

"Me and the girls were really close to her. Sure, we've all had our moments with Alison, some were a bit bad. She may have been a bitch, but she was still our best friend and we really cared about her. When she went missing we were sad, but when her body was found, we were broken" I explained.

Whether we show it or not, Ali's death really did affect us.

We're trying to get over her death but we can't. Because it's like I said, she was our best friend and we really did care about her.

I snapped out of my thoughts when I felt a hand on my hand. I looked up to see Alyssa smiling softly at me.

"It sounds like you were really close to her, maybe even closer than the others" Alyssa said.

"Yeah, I was. She was my best friend, no matter what she did she was my best friend, she'll always be my best friend" I softly smiled.

I wanted to cry. Whenever I talk about Ali or if someone ever mentions her I get emotional.

I held in my tears because I didn't want to cry, not in front of Alyssa.

"Well, if you're upset about how everything turned out with Garrett's case, don't worry. I'm sure the police will be able to find something that will prove Garrett is guilty" Alyssa reassured her.

I sighed and smiled at her when I felt her caressing the top of my hand with her thumb.

"I hope so" I said.

I want justice.

Not just justice for Alison.

But justice for Maya too.

Garrett killed Maya because she found out something that linked Garrett to that night and wanted to tell Emily, but she was killed before anything could happen.

They both deserve justice.

After School

When school was over I walked out of the building and walked down the stairs. Just when I was about to head to my car I spotted Jason running towards the school.

A sigh escaped my lips before I walked towards him.

"Jason, hey" I smiled.

"What's up?" Jason asked.

"I, uh, heard you were going to be on the basketball courts" I said.

"Yeah, I was. Pulled myself out of the game" Jason said.

"Why?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"Figured I'd hurt less people running around the block" Jason said.

A frown appeared on my face at that. Why would he think that?

"Right. Well, that answers my next question" I said.

"Which was?" Jason asked.

"Are you ok? I'm so sorry that Spencer and I dragged you into this" I said, feeling guilty.

"It's not your fault, Ethan. And it's not Spencer's fault either. You guys didn't make me walk into that police station" Jason said.

"I know, but I thought that-" I started but Jason cut me off.

"I know. That this piece of jewelry would have ended this. But it didn't, alright? Now, instead of being the big hero, I'm back to being the big screw-up" Jason angrily said.

But he can't fool me. I know that under that anger I can hear sadness in his tone.

"Jason, don't say that. Ok, you're not a screw up and nobody thinks that" I softly said.

"Really? Maybe I should let you pick up my father from the airport" Jason angrily said.

Oh, right. I forgot Mr. Dilaurentis returns today.

I'm honestly not sure what to say. I mean, he's an alright dude, but I've just never really liked him. I tolerate him but that's it.

I wanted to ask more about Garrett's case, but I knew that it would just make Jason more uncomfortable than he already is. So, I just decided to leave it alone.

But I did need some answers from him about Cece.

"Hey, I, uh, I met Cece Drake this morning. Did you know that she's back in town?" I asked.

"I heard" Jason nodded.

"I didn't even know that she and Ali were friends. She said that you guys spent an intense summer" I said.

"Everything with Cece's intense" Jason deadpanned.

"Did it end on a bad note?" I asked.

"You could say that" Jason nodded.

"Well, I didn't know she was such a flirt, considering when me and the girls ran into her at the brew she flirted with me" I said.

It still made me uncomfortable.

She's not like a bad person, given that I really don't know her that well, but there's just something about her that seems off.

Jason chuckled at that and shook his head.

"Look, I got to, uh, get home and take a shower. I'm gonna be late for his plane" Jason said.

"Ok" I nodded.

Jason was about to walk away when I grabbed his hand, stopping him.

"Jase, you're not a screw-up, you never were. You're an amazing person and overall an amazing brother. Who cares what people think. Just remember that I'm always here for you whenever you need me" I softly said.

A small smile appeared on Jason's face as he nodded his head.

I let go of his arm and chuckled when he ruffled my hair. He smiled at me before turning around and walking away.

Late At Night

Hanna and I went to the Radley together to meet up with Aria after her visit with Mona.

We were hoping that if Aria went to visit Mona she'd be able to get some answers. Considering Hanna and I couldn't.

I honestly can't remember the last time coming here, let alone visiting Mona.

I've tried my best to get over my anxiety whenever I come to this place or whenever I see Mona, but it's been hard.

Can you really blame me?

My best friend, or my ex-best friend, was the one that tortured me and the girls. She was the one that ran me over with a car and nearly killed me. She nearly killed me that time at the greenhouse.

After everything I've done for her when Alison bullied her, this is how she repays me.

Hanna and I were waiting before we saw Aria exiting the building as she walked towards us.

"You guys didn't have to come all the way down here" Aria said.

"What'd she say?" Hanna asked.

"Hardly anything. Her visits are supervised now, but she wanted me to tell you that she's sorry. Especially you, Ethan" Aria said.

"Yeah, well sorry isn't really going to erase what she's done" I scoffed.

"Is it possible that maybe she's not behind any of this?" Aria asked.

"Either way, she knows who is" Hanna said.

She started walking towards the building when Aria and I stopped her.

"The nurses change shifts in twenty minutes" Hanna said.

I nodded while Aria raised an eyebrow at both of us, clearly confused.

"What? We've been here enough times to know. Me more than Ethan" Hanna said.

"That's not what the look is for. You're sneaking in" Aria said.

"Buttercup" I warned.

"Hanna, I know that you're freaked out about everything, but you could just come back tomorrow" Aria said.

"And do what? Have a nice chat about A in the day room?" Hanna sarcastically asked.

Aria and I glanced at each other before sighing and looking back at Hanna.

"Ok, then we're going with you" Aria said and I nodded.

"No! Aria, Ethan, this-" Hanna started but I cut her off.

"Buttercup, friends don't let friends sneak into insane asylums alone" I sternly said.

Aria nodded her head while Hanna sighed but reluctantly nodded her head. The three of us shared small smiles before heading inside.

The three of us walked up the stairs, looking around, making sure that nobody was out right now. The last thing we need is people going to the cops saying they saw three teenagers going into Radley late at night.

I quietly opened the front door before letting Aria and Hanna go in first. When they were in I walked in myself. I quietly closed the door before the three of us began walking down the hallway.

Luckily no nurses were here so we should be in the clear for now.

We walked towards Mona's room. Hanna made her way to the door and placed her hand on the door handle.

"You two wait out here, alright? Make sure nobody comes" Hanna whispered, looking at us.

Aria and I nodded and Hanna quietly walked inside the room.

As we waited Aria and I leaned against the wall, patiently waiting, either for Hanna to come back or if a nurse walked by.

All of a sudden we heard footsteps, causing the two of us to look at each other. We turned around and took a quick peek, only for our eyes to widen when we saw a nurse walking by.

Without giving it much thought I opened the door to Mona's room. I grabbed Aria's arm and pulled her inside.

I quietly shut the door and sighed in relief. I turned around and saw Hanna looking at Aria and me in confusion. While Mona was sitting on a chair.

"Nurse was coming" I said.

"Ethan, hi. It's good to see you again" Mona softly smiled.

I gulped down my anxiety and nodded my head at her.

However, when Mona's eyes locked on Aria, I saw anger flash through her eyes.

"What is she doing back here?" Mona asked.

"She never left. You need to give her some answers, so talk" Aria demanded, crossing her arms over her chest.

Mona smiled before looking at me and Hanna, raising an eyebrow at us.

"Can I? Does she know about that day?" Mona asked.

"Know about what?" Aria asked, confused.

"Cut it out, alright? That's not why I'm here" Hanna said, clearly annoyed.

"Is he really still mad at you? I mean, I understand why he's not mad at Ethan, given that he's not the one that made the call" Mona said.

Oh shit.

Mona's talking about THAT day.

That's the other reason why Hanna came here. Really.

"Who? What? Guys, what the hell is she talking about?" Aria asked, confused.

"I won't say anything if you guys don't want me to" Mona said.

"Say something about what?" Aria asked, getting more confused and frustrated.

Hanna and I looked at each other and sighed. We really didn't want to tell Aria about that day, but we didn't have much of a choice.

Flashback
Nobody's Pov

Mona, Ethan and Hanna were currently walking around town together.

Mona was trying to help her two best friends forget about what they learned today. She can tell that they were upset and she wanted nothing more than to try and help.

"It's really simple. You just take the first letter of each word to spell out a new word. So, like, 'she lives under trees' equals 'slut'" Mona smiled.

"What?" Hanna asked, confused.

"It's a code. So we can talk about people right in front of them" Mona smiled.

Ethan chuckled slightly at that and shook his head at his best friend.

Ethan and Hanna spotted a missing poster on a nearby tree. It was the missing poster of Alison. A frown formed on both their faces as they looked away from it.

"Look, we're sorry, Mona, we're just really not in the mood right now" Ethan softly said.

"I know, but I thought it might help you take your mind off things" Mona softly smiled.

Ethan and Hanna smiled at her and nodded.

All of a sudden they heard tires screech and the three of them turned around to see a car parking nearby.

They saw Mr. Dilaurentis getting out of the car, an angry look on his face, as he stormed towards them. Jason got out of the car and followed behind his father.

"Do you have any idea?!" Mr. Dilaurentis yelled, his eyes locked on Hanna.

Mona took a few steps back in fear while Ethan moved closer to Hanna.

"Dad, don't!" Jason yelled.

"Do you know what your little joke did to my wife?" Mr. Dilaurentis angrily asked.

"Dad!" Jason yelled, trying to stop his dad and pull him away.

"She believed you! You gave her hope! Stay away from my family!" Mr. Dilaurentis angrily yelled.

Hanna flinched at his tone and Ethan wrapped his arm around her shoulders protectively.

"Dad, dad, come on, let's go" Jason said.

"How could you?" Mr. Dilaurentis asked, anger and sadness shown in his tone.

Jason finally managed to pull his father away from the trio. He sent a look to Hanna and sent a tiny smile to Ethan before walking away.

When they were gone Ethan pulled a shaking Hanna into a tight hug, rubbing her back up and down, trying to calm her down after what just occurred.

Flashback Ends
Ethan's Pov

I remember that day perfectly. I could never forget it.

I tried to convince Hanna not to call Mrs. Dilaurentis because it could've been a prank from someone. But she insisted on calling her and telling her that Ali was alive. She really believed she was.

"I called Mrs. Dilaurentis. And I told her she was alive. Then, three days later, they found her body" Hanna said.

I sighed and gently rubbed her arm, trying to comfort her.

She's still guilty about what she did. She'll never forget the angry look in Mr. Dilaurentis's eyes when he yelled at her.

"Look, he still hates me. I could just feel it. He's never forgiven me. Another stupid mistake A can use to ruin my life" Hanna said.

Aria frowned and gently patted her shoulder, trying to give her some comfort.

The three of us turned around, only for our eyes to widen when we saw that Mona was missing.

"Where the hell is Mona?" I asked.

We all looked around the room and saw her door was opened.

Shit, she left when we were telling Aria about what happened with Mr. Dilaurentis.

"Please tell me you still have your keys" Hanna said.

The three of us quickly left her room and began walking down the hallway. We still had to be careful because they were still working.

We hid behind a wall when we saw a worker pass by. When we were sure they were gone we continued walking, doing our best to be as quiet as possible.

"Oh, I'm going to twist Mona's head off" Hanna said, clearly annoyed.

"I know, but first we have to find her. You guys don't think she's still A, do you?" Aria asked.

"Honestly, I'm not sure what to think about her" I sighed.

We looked around before Hanna and I spotted something nearby that caught our attention.

"That...that door is always closed" Hanna said and I nodded.

Aria raised an eyebrow and turned around. She glanced at us before we began walking towards the door.

"Children's ward. Dedicated 1931. Do you think she went in there?" Aria asked.

I shrugged my shoulders and continued looking around, trying to see if there was something Mona had used to get inside.

My eyes widened when I saw something on the ground.

"Are those tweezers?" I asked in disbelief.

Hanna and Aria looked down and their eyes widen when they saw the pair of tweezers on the ground.

Where the hell did she get tweezers from?

"Those are mine" Hanna gasped in shock.

"You gave tweezers to a mental patient?" Aria asked in shock.

"Of course not. She probably stole them" Hanna said.

"I'm not even surprised at this point. Now, come on" I said.

The two of them nodded and we walked inside the room, hopefully she was here, otherwise we'd have to look again.

If we can't find her then we might as well just go home.

We walked inside the room and slowly walked down the hall. We made sure to stay near each other at all times.

"Do you hear that?" Hanna asked, clinging onto my arm.

Yeah. I do. It sounds like someone's humming.

We continued walking before we turned around and walked into some room. Like a nursery room or something.

"They used to put kids down here?" Aria asked in disbelief.

"When I have kids I'm making sure they're far away from this place as possible" I said.

"Wait, over there" Hanna said.

We continued walking before making another turn.

We stopped when we saw Mona sitting on a bed, combing a dolls hair.

The three of us glanced at each other before making our way towards her.

"What is she doing?" Aria asked, trying to be quiet.

But Mona still heard her and snapped her head up to look at her.

"Miss Aria, you're a killer, not Ezra's wife" Mona said.

Uh...what?

"Miss Aria, you're a killer, not Ezra's wife" Mona said, again.

I groaned in annoyance before taking the doll out of her hands.

"Cut it out, Mona" I said before setting the doll somewhere else.

Mona flashed me an annoyed look before grabbing another doll that was on the bed and began combing it's hair.

"Where were we? Maya's away, sleeping sweet. Until Garrett's all rosy, count on me. Where were we?" Mona said.

Again, what?

"Mona?" we heard a nurse call out to her.

"Somebody's coming" Aria whispered.

"Really? What gave that away?" I sarcastically asked, earning a glare from her.

"Look, Mona, I am begging you, if you know anything about what's happening to us, can you just tell me, please?" Hanna begged.

Mona looked at Hanna, still combing the doll's hair.

"No one to save Ali from evil. No one to save Ali from evil" Mona said.

What is with this girl and her rhymes? Or whatever the hell she speaks?

"Mona, is that you?" a nurse called out to her, again.

"Hanna, we have to get out of here. Now" Aria said.

We can't leave, especially if the nurses are coming.

I looked around before spotting a closet. I quickly grabbed Hanna and Aria's arm and pulled them inside the closet. Once I was inside I quickly shut the door.

"Mona? There you are" a nurse said.

She walked towards Mona just as another nurse entered the room.

"It's time to go now, honey" the nurse said.

Luckily we were able to see and hear what was going on since this door was half broken.

The other nurse took the doll from Mona and set it aside as both nurses grabbed her arms and pulled her off the bed.

"No" Mona whined.

"Come" the nurse said.

Mona turned her head around. She spotted us inside the closet, her eyes locking onto ours.

"I missed my dolls" Mona said.

Is she literally referring to us as her dolls? That's freaking creepy.

"They're not going anywhere. Come now" the nurse said.

When they were gone we quietly opened the closet door. We were still trying to process everything that happened.

I sighed and shook my head before nodding my head, gesturing for the two of them to follow me.

I just want to get out of here and go home. I want nothing more than to go to sleep.

Late At Night

I'm angry.

I only get angry when someone gets on my nerves, someone I care about gets hurt, A tries provoking me, I'm hungry or I'm exhausted.

And the last one is a winner.

When I got home I brushed my teeth, changed into some comfortable clothes before going to my room and getting into bed to sleep.

Everything was fine.

Until Spencer came into my room and told me that we had to go to Aria's house.

Apparently Hanna figured something out and decided to wake all of us up to tell us.

I love Hanna, I really do, but why did she feel the need to wake us up and tell us this late at night. We were all tired and we had school in the morning.

So, the five of us were sitting on Aria's bed.

All of us, minus Hanna, were tired. It's clearly shown on all our faces.

"A code?" Spencer asked, confused.

"It's a stupid thing she made up back when we were friends" I sighed.

"Why wouldn't she just come out and say it?" Emily asked, confused.

"Because Aria was there. She doesn't trust her" Hanna said.

"So it's my fault? You gave the girl a pair of tweezers" Aria said, clearly annoyed.

"Look, Mona pushed me to remember that day with Ali's dad. Because that's when she gave me the code" Hanna said.

"Ok, I have a French exam at eight A.M. Could we just skip ahead to the actual message?" Spencer asked.

"Yeah, and I don't know about you guys but I want to go to bed" I huffed, crossing my arms.

"No one to save Ali from evil. That's what she kept saying. If you take the first letter of each word, you get-" Hanna started but Spencer cut her off.

"Not safe" Spencer said.

I chuckled at the looks Aria and Emily were giving her.

"It's not, like, that complicated" Spencer defended.

"Yeah, but there's more" Hanna said.

"Oh, my God, what's that other poem? Something about Garrett and Maya" Aria asked.

"Where were we? Maya's away, sleeping sweet" Hanna said.

"Www.Mass. She gave you a website. What was the rest?" Spencer asked, taking out her laptop as she began typing.

"Until Garrett's all rosy, count on me" I finished the rest of the poem.

"Mas sugar? What does that mean?" Spencer asked, confused.

"M-a-s, that's Maya's initials. Anne was her middle name" Emily said.

Spencer furrowed her eyebrows together before turning her laptop around so we could see what she found.

It was a website about Maya. It even had a picture of her too.

"I don't suppose crazy slipped either of you the password as well?" Spencer asked.

"Did Mona mean she's not safe, or we're not?" Aria asked, confused and scared.

I'm not sure what she meant. But my guess is that it's nothing good.

But either way we got something out of that poem Mona told us. We just need a password and we're in. And this may be able to help us.
