3: The house in the forest #2
"Hey Atsushi, you must be very confused right now and I understand, none of this makes sense anyway but if you're here it's probably because Mori wants to snoop on the JNA's affairs . Personally I have no problem with that and that's why this notebook will serve as a guide when you're inside." The more I read these lines the more my mind seems confused, what does Dazai have to do with this? I think over and over and then a flash crosses my mind. Dazai was once part of the mafia, given his extreme intelligence it wouldn't surprise me if he was also part of the JNA. So Dazai was part of the most dangerous group in the mafia, just thinking about it makes my stomach turn. I catch my breath and continue reading. "I'll just start at the beginning with the house. I lived here until I was 18 when I left the mafia, it wasn't really the place I lived but I can't say that my old "accommodation" did the job so most of the time I slept here. This house was Odasaku's property which he inherited after the death of one of his close friends. It was an old dilapidated house that was worth almost nothing but Odasaku renovated everything and I must say, he did a beautiful job, I didn't imagine Odasaku a handyman but I was obviously wrong. While I'm there let me introduce you to Odasaku : he was my best friend, he was a member of the mafia too but oddly enough, he never killed and he had little orphans in his care, I'm sure he would have adored you! It was a bit like a father figure to me and he always made sure I felt good."
I don't know who this Odasaku is but he seems like a good person, if I find Dazai I will ask him to introduce him to me. Odasaku seems to be the same thing to Dazai as he is to me "If Mori is smart he probably gave you an envelope and inside you will find a key. This house is full of secret passages and it will be more exciting if you find where this key goes by yourself!" I recognize Dazai there, always letting me figure things out for myself, I would still have liked him to tell me where to use this key but hey, no choice I have to find out for myself As I walk up to the front door I put the key through the lock and as I expected, it doesn't fit. It was too easy. I peer through the gap made for the mail and observe the interior of the house. Looking at it, it's as if the house was waiting for me, it looks like someone still lives there, which is rather rare for an abandoned house. I walk around the house and end up finding an entrance through the exterior courtyard, the back door is closed but there is a cat flap that is open. Suddenly, I think of Akutagawa and all those times he treated me like a cat. I sigh and reluctantly I go through the cat flap, if Akutagawa had been there, he would probably have laughed at me. Besides, it's been a long time since I saw Akutagawa, even during meetings with the mafia I haven't seen him for at least a year. It's probably better that way, I don't want to see him anyway and I think he doesn't either. I land in the garage. There are washing machines, a few DIY shelves with gardening books, but what catches my eye the most is the big, bright red motorcycle. It shines like it's new, maybe it is. I inspect it more closely. I open the small trunk under the seat and I find a hat and some small things like candy, handkerchiefs, in short, nothing special. I take the hat to look at it more closely, even this one looks new and the finishes are superb. The price of all this business must be exorbitant but there are only mafiosi who lived here, I don't know how much the port mafia earns but it must undoubtedly be enough to live a quiet and comfortable life. I continue to look at the garage then go inside.
As I enter the living room I feel a strange feeling. I can't explain why but I feel nostalgic. There was nothing outwardly unusual about the house, there was just too much stuff. Lots of things everywhere and in bulk. Drawers left open as well as tons of blankets and cushions placed loose on the sofa. Several bottles of alcohol scattered on the coffee table and clothes piled up on the armchair, in short, an impossible mess. I continue my visit and looking at the walls I see photos, lots of photos. In some of the photos I recognize Dazai which confirms my doubts, he was indeed part of the JNA. I also recognize Akutagawa, I'm not that surprised, Akutagawa is a very powerful member of the mafia. I also recognize a red-haired man with a hat that Dazai had told me about, his name is Chuuya Nakahara if I remember correctly. He always said that Chuuya was annoying and that he was happy not to see him anymore since he left the mafia but Dazai often appears alongside Chuuya in the photos hanging on the walls and they seem quite complicit, that don't surprise me Dazai. Well, it's very nice to visit the house but I must not deviate from my main mission but the thing is that I still don't know where this key goes. I glance at Dazai's notebook and turn the pages until I find a page with "clues" written in big letters. "If you can't find where to use the key I'll help you a little with a little riddle: The lock is in the entrance of culture" I sigh, I'm well advanced, "the entrance to culture"? But what did he mean by that? I think and then a flash of genius crosses my mind, the library! I search the Ground Floor to find the library but it is obviously upstairs, I go up the stairs and I find on my left a large door, it is open and it is the library, I search the interior, I think I've never seen so many books in a single house, there are old books that look as old as the house but there are also quite a few novels and even a desk where more notebooks are placed. There are no other doors I continue to search desperately then I find a sort of trapdoor behind a pile of books, the trapdoor is sealed with a padlock. I test my key and it fits. I smile in relief and slip through my trap door which looks just big enough for a human to fit through. There are small paintings on the walls. I reach the end of the conduit and unlock the other end of the trapdoor. I enter a fairly dark room, the bed is cluttered but I notice something lying on the dresser, a photo of a man with auburn brown hair and a three-day beard as well as a small wooden board with inscription
"Sakunosuke Oda, 1996-2019"
