2: The house in the forest
Today is the big day. I have prepared everything I need in my bag: A flashlight, my charged phone, a Swiss army knife and of course, the file in question. I leave the agency at 4 p.m. to head towards the JNA HQ. Kunikida takes me by car, we pass through a large, fairly deep forest, the further we go the darker it gets, I watch the trees go by at high speed through the window. Kunikida and I remain silent. I must admit that I am still very stressed about this mission but all I have to do is search this house to recover as much information as possible. I don't see how this will be complicated.
We end up arriving in front of the house, it's so big that it looks like a mansion, it looks quite old but it's like someone renovated it or something but despite that the vegetation very dense which goes up on the walls indicates that no one has lived here for several years or that in any case no one has maintained this house for a long time. Kunikida drops me off at the end of the forest.
Kunikida: "This is where we part ways, I wish you luck Atsushi, call me when you're done and I'll come pick you up."
Kunikida closes the door and leaves. I turn on my heel and stare at the house. For some unknown reason the house gives me a strange feeling, the more I look at it the more I feel my stomach knotting, it's probably stress. I walk towards the house and at the same time observe the garden, there are a few plants, a terrace but the most impressive is the immense cherry tree at the bottom of the garden, I decide to go closer to look at it closer, there is a swing that creaks a little at the bottom of the tree but I can't stop staring at the branches with the leaves slightly orange from the autumn of the cherry tree. I have never seen such beautiful ones. I'm coming out of my little cloud, but what am I doing? I am completely deviating from my main mission. I pull myself together and continue moving towards the house
While walking, I discover small blue dots on the ground, curious, I observe them more closely, they look like paint. I decide to follow them. I arrive in front of the mailbox in the old area but there is a big trace of blue paint in the shape of an arrow pointing me to the handle, I hesitate before opening, but what did that mean? I think about it and then come to a conclusion: it was probably the boss of the port mafia who left me instructions or additional information about the house. I open the mailbox, inside: a fairly thick red notebook, I open the first page and I read
"For Atsushi Nakajima"
We could have thought of a notebook from Ogai Mori but no, I immediately recognized this writing, this writing that I haven't seen for a long time
It was Dazai's handwriting.
