The Spies of Saruman

(Track 07-The Ring Goes South)

As we set out from Rivendell, I was accompanied by Frodo and Gandalf, alongside Aragorn, Boromir, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Legolas and Gimli. The sky was a bright blue and the sun shined like a giant lightbulb. The wind was blowing in my hair. Off in the distance, there were large, snowy mountains surrounding the escarpment. "Wow." I thought. "I wonder what it would be like to be on top of one of those mountains. The sight must be incredible." I asked Gandalf if he knew anything about the mountain range. "Those are the Misty Mountains." The wizard told me. "The Misty Mountains? That's where Bilbo found the Ring!" "Brianna, my dear, we must not speak about the Ring because many of Saruman's spies are everywhere. If they find out about the Ring, he will send an army of orcs after us and the Middle-Earth will fall into the hands of the enemy."
A couple of hours later, we set up a camp where there was a spectacular view of the Misty Mountains. I felt like I was in the middle of a wonderful dream. I've always wanted to see the lands outside of the Shire.
Sam started up a campfire. Frodo and I sat down beside him. Pippin and Merry were playing with Boromir. Gandalf came up from behind me and tapped me on the shoulder with his wrinkled finger. "Brianna, may I please speak with you in private? There are some urgent matters that I have to discuss with you." I told Frodo that Gandalf wanted to speak with me.
Gandalf led me to the far side of the camp. "How are you feeling?" He asked me. "I'm feeling a bit nervous, but other than that, I'm fine." "Brianna, there is something I want to give to you." The old wizard searched his robe pockets and brought out a vial of a magical substance. "Elrond gave this to me to give to you. It may prove useful to you on the journey." "What is it?" "It is a potion that will allow you to see the future and the past. You must be very careful with it." "Why are you giving this to me?" "Because you may be able to save Middle-Earth." "I'm too young to save Middle-Earth! I thought that was Frodo's job!" "You are correct, but that is not the only way. If you use this, you will be able save many lives." "Our lives?" Gandalf nodded his head. "Keep it safe. You don't want that vial falling into the hands of one of Sauron's servants. The results could be catastrophic." "Catastrophic?!" The wizard interrupted me. "Put that away. Head back to the camp. Now." I looked up into the sky and saw a swarm of black birds. "Run! Hide!"
The company and I hid underneath some nearby bushes and we saw the birds flying past us, letting out horrible, blood curdling cries. "Who are they?" I asked Gandalf. "They are spies of Saruman. We must make for Caradhras!"
