Chapter 9 Friend or Foe?
Walking out of Nomura Academy's gates, Izuku kept his black hoodie up to cover up his face and horns while his matching sweatpants were only worn for the flexibility factor. He ignored those that stared at his outfit, opting to listen to Shiori while she remained in her own home.
"Little One, are you sure you want to leave the safety of the school?" She asked inquisitively to him.
So it wasn't you that gave me that headache? He asked in return, an eyebrow arching up for pure emphasis. Was it my genes then?
"The possibilities are endless. Though the most likely answers are the interference of another otherworldly being, someone trying to take your soul, or a demon trying to use your body as a portal." She listed before humming to herself while Izuku thought over the options.
Staying silent, the freckled boy flashed his student ID over a machine before leaving the school grounds. If it was another being, wouldn't I be able to see them? He inquired, searching for more information to find the most feasible answer.
"Not necessarily. You are able to see me due to the bond I made between our souls. Meanwhile, other otherworldly beings will remain invisible to you without the activation of your demonic genes."
Wait. He interrupted her, his eyes widening at her answer. What did you do with my soul!?
"I merely fused our souls so we can never be separated."
Can never be separated!? But... But what if I die? Does that mean I'm still stuck with you!? He asked frantically, mixing in a stutter with his thoughts.
"I suppose I had not thought of the consequences. Plus, once your demon genes are fully awakened, you will be immortal like I am."
NO! NO! NO! I'm stuck with you forever!
"Is there something wrong with me? I provided you with power."
I only needed you for power... I just needed a stepping stone to get closer to becoming the number one hero. If I'm stuck with you forever, I have no idea what will happen. What if someone finds out about you? Then they'll consider me a villain! Or worse! They'll think I'm dealing with the enemy and will kick me out of the Hero Association!
"Little One, please stop mumbling." The demon woman interrupted, breaking off the freckled boy's internal rant. "Focus on the matter at hand: fighting villains."
Okay... I can do that. He replied to her, looking around him. He was surrounded by nameless citizens going about their afternoon without a care in the world. The green-haired boy sighed, he was in the midst of civilians with no sign of a villain, or at least, not an obvious sign appeared in the vicinity.
So he ventured onward, still searching for a villain to fight. Well over an hour passed with no sight of a chance for Izuku to let his blood boil. Throughout that hour he walked through the town with a dutiful eye keeping track of the time he had left. Eventually, he had wandered downtown, far away from the academy he would have to return to, yet he kept looking.
Suddenly, a scream burst out, alerting the freckled boy and causing him to turn to his left. Without a second thought, he began to charge toward the source, following the sequential screams that proceeded the first. When he arrived at the source, he found a simply disturbing scene. A woman was getting raped with her clothes already torn into shreds and blood splattered against the wall of an alley.
Barely a second passed before Izuku stabbed the offender and kept him pinned to the ground by stepping on his face. Now that she was free, the woman covered her private areas with her arms while she watched Izuku hold her attacker down.
"Thank you," she sobbed, only to be given a wave of Izuku's hand in return. Then, she ran out of the alley, leaving Izuku with the rapist.
The young man stared at the attacker, which awarded him with a sight he'd rather be without. Beneath the sole of his shoe, the face of a cross-eyed man smiled delusionally, completely masochistic or unaware of the situation he was placed in. Applying pressure down on the man's face only contorted the face further, though it allowed Izuku to deduce that the man was mostly unaware of his body's placement.
"Today is weird," the freckled boy mumbled, retracting his claw and stomping down on the man's face once. Walking out of the alley, Izuku felt the folds between his fingers seal up and a nagging feeling in his hands. Ignoring that feeling, he took a deep breath and stopped.
When his footsteps stopped, he could hear the heavy patter of another person's feet. Yet he didn't turn to find the source, instead, he closed his eyes and kept up a rhythm of deep breaths. The steps grew louder and more frequent until Izuku turned. Then, it all stopped.
Opening his eyes, Izuku watched a chubby head slump off the rapist's shoulders with his slit eyes. One of his hands held a claw while the other held a vibrant orange flame. Silently, the murderer popped the flame into his mouth and swallowed it while his claw retracted into its socket. After all that was done, Izuku's eyes returned to their normal spherical shape.
Why do I feel dizzy? He wondered, placing a hand onto a wall to support himself. Then, he glanced down and saw the disembodied head rolling around, like a turd in the wind. What... Did I do this? Why? Why? I didn't need to kill him! He wasn't going to hurt anyone else! The young man rambled to himself, eventually slamming his horns into the wall out of frustration. What came over me? I felt something moving my hand... then it all went blank.
"Your genes are acting out," Shiori answered his question from before. "From what, I do not know."
Is there any way to stop it? I don't want to go on a murder spree without the need to. He asked, keeping his horns lodged into the wall.
"I do not know the cause. So the solution eludes me."
Can I risk it happening again?
"I would not recommend it."
Only emergencies then. For now, I'll make my way to the academy. With that thought in mind, Izuku looked for a clock before beginning his trek back to his temporary home. He followed the same path he took earlier, though now, the quiet afternoon had evolved into a rumbling twilight. Spread throughout the city, villains fought heroes and committed countless crimes while heroes continued to promote themselves to the public.
Suddenly, in the midst of walking, a surge pulsed throughout Izuku's body, numbing each of his limbs for a fraction of a second. Still, that was enough time for him to collapse against a lamppost, his head surging with feelings mixing into a mess of sensations.
Without so much as noticing the freckled boy, civilians walked past him. The green-haired teenager ignored them and focused on the pulses traveling through his body, each one surging with a cold sensation. It almost felt like his body would stop all its functions, turning it into a cold vessel for a brief period of time.
Along with the pulses, Izuku's eyes began to burn while following the same pattern. With his other senses drowned out, the burning rose to the surface, magnifying the sensation until it was the only thing he could feel.
That burning... Why? Why am I still in control? Izuku kept leaning against the lamppost while people passed by. It was until someone's arm had phased through his own that he began to lose all control of his limbs. Shakily, he dropped to the ground, still leaning against the lamppost while the pulses grew more frequent and longer. My eyes... are they transforming?
"Yes, but your eyes keep shrinking and growing," Shiori answered him after she had exited through his chest to view his face. "Your energy is going through an influx like before, except, it is weaker than it previously was."
It... won't... stop! He internally shouted with his fright only growing each time someone passed through him. He kept trying to focus on the flames burning his eyes, yet he couldn't grasp anything. It was as if whatever causing his influx is changing its method every time Izuku tried to stop it.
Eventually, he succumbed to the force, tired of the game he was forced to play. In just a second, the pulses began to remain continuous and Izuku's only feeling was the burning in his eyes. Despite the pain, he raised his head and instantly jolted back.
Standing before him was a woman garbed in Nomura Academy's school uniform, albeit a torn and tattered version. Yet there were three more things that made her stand out from the nameless crowd. Along with two holes in her uniform, feathered wings sprouted from her back with their grey colors blending in with the bleak night. But then, Izuku's eyes were drawn to the woman's lime green eyes, instead of the pitch black chain she had been holding.
"Demon. You killed a man today." She spoke with venom laced in her voice, so much so that there was no word without an ocean of hatred behind it. "I'll make sure you never kill anyone else."
With a simple wave of her hands, she had bound Izuku around the lamppost with the pitch black chains. Then, while one hand kept Izuku bound tightly, she used the other to reach into Izuku's chest until nearly her entire arm was in Izuku's body. When she had started to pull her hand out, Izuku felt like his heart was being torn out from its place. Instead of his heart, Shiori was pulled out by the neck until her whole body was revealed.
"Shiori!" Izuku shouted, pushing against the chains that bound him. In response, the winged woman pulled the chain back, tightening it wherever it wrapped around Izuku's limbs. "I'll kill you!" His eyes glared into the woman's own eyes, yet she hadn't even flinched.
"Little One, she is too strong." The demon choked out while she let her limbs hang lifelessly at her sides.
Tugging at the chain once more, the woman watched Izuku's limbs twist until the chains dug deeper and a loud snap broke out. Screaming, Izuku tried to break the chains on his legs, but he could barely move them. "She's right, Demon. You don't stand a chance against me."
"I don't care! I'll keep fighting!" He kept shouting while flailing his limbs as much as possible. "A true hero would never give up!"
"A Hero?" She dropped Shiori, letting her limp body fall to the ground. Then, the winged woman leaned closer to Izuku until both their faces were mere centimeters apart from touching. "Prove it, Demon."
