Chapter 8 Cherry Blossoms

Cherry Blossoms. That was the first thought that ran through Izuku's head.

Just a few moments prior, he had been on a train to the Nomura station, a special stop built right across from the entrance to the academy. While convenient, it had accumulated quite a lot of noise, which had been complained about yet never fixed.

Feeling the train had stopped moving, Izuku left the vehicle alongside many other students adorning the same cobalt uniform that he did. Though he did see quite a few variations. Instead of a blazer, some students had a cobalt vest. Instead of pants, other guys had opted for shorts. Meanwhile, the girls had the choice between pants, shorts, or a skirt.

But more importantly, Izuku kept walking with his suitcase in hand, following the groups that seemed accustomed to the academy's layout already. Leaving the station and crossing the street, Izuku was left with a sight he has only seen online. Making up the entrance to the academy, a row of cherry blossom trees laid on either side of the path and all of them in full bloom, showing off the magnificent petals before they were whisked away by a breeze. Admiring the sight, he stopped and held up his hand, allowing a petal to land there before the wind had blown it away.

"This place is beautiful." He muttered to himself, head arched toward the tops of the buildings that made up the academy.

"I know, right?"

Jolting to the left, Izuku dropped to the ground, one hand on the path and the other reeled back.

"You're quite the jumpy one, aren't you?" Previously to his right was a tall young woman adorning an unbuttoned blazer and skirt that fluttered with the gentle spring breeze. "Sorry for startling you, but I'm Tomiko Tsukuda. And you are?"

"Izuku Midoriya," the freckled student replied, rising out of his wary stance. "Sorry for doing that. I... usually don't talk to strangers." He stuttered out, gripping onto his suitcase slightly tighter.

Suddenly, the girl's ears twitched, barely knocking her jet black hair out of place. Leaning closer, she had lowered herself to be at eye level with Izuku so she could look into his emerald green eyes with her own lime green eyes. "You just fibbed."

"Huh?" Izuku stammered, stepping back from the black-haired girl.

Standing up straight, she waved her hand at him and smiled with her eyes closed while she said, "It's nothing."

Glancing to the side, Izuku could only see a handful of students left, mostly those that were chatting amongst themselves. "Well, I have to get going now," Izuku stammered out, turning to face the building instead of the girl in front of him.

"You should get going then." She replied, her eyes still closed while she smiled. Walking away, Izuku glanced back after he had taken a few steps, expecting her to still be smiling or walking away. Yet she was completely gone, not a trace left of her.

Shaking his head, Izuku turned back to the building and kept walking, not even taking another glance back. Entering the building filled Izuku's mind with chatter, especially of the nonsensical kind. Nonetheless, he ventured through the first room of the building until he reached a counter where a brunette woman adorning a pantsuit resided.

"Excuse me, I'm here for my schedule," he squeaked out, catching the woman's attention.

"What's your name, kiddo?" She asked, picking up a small stack of papers that were on the counter.

"Izuku Midoriya," he answered, watching as she flipped through the stack until she reached the middle. Slowing down, she skimmed through the papers until she pulled one of them out. "Thank you," the freckled wonder said, taking the paper from the woman.

"Wait a sec, kiddo," she replied, going under the counter for a moment. "Here, you'll need this." She told him, giving him a card with Nomura Academy's emblem on one side. Then, setting down the remainder of the stack on the counter, she turned away to continue doing her work. That or slack off, but no one could confirm what she had been doing the entire day.

Not paying her a second thought, Izuku walked out of the crowded room and started to traverse through a hallway. Going over the paper, Izuku took note of the classes he had been assigned, along with the note at the bottom. That very note was there to alert every first year that joining a club or a committee was mandatory, but one could switch to another at any point during the year.

With a sigh, Izuku looked over his paper and then at his card, learning that he was placed in dorm 77. A high number could only mean a lot of stairs, though at least it was one of the easier numbers to remember. But only time will tell.

And ten minutes later, he was in front of a staircase. Thankfully, there was an elevator right next to the stairs, so Izuku decided to take the lazier option after he looked at a floor directory, learning that he was on the fourth floor. Unfortunately, when the elevator doors opened, another three people rushed in, all of them pressing different buttons.

"This is going to be a long day," Izuku mumbled to himself, pressing the button for his floor. After waiting for several antagonizing minutes, the elevator doors opened and he rushed out quicker than a cat running from a bath. "Finally! Safe from that cramped hell!" He shouted in relief, ignoring all those that could hear him.

"Safe from what?"

Flying out of his chest, Shiori faced Izuku the entire time and kept her arms crossed under her bosom. Though startled by her sudden appearance, Izuku walked through her and looked for his dorm.

"Fine, I will just have to go through your memories." She complained, diving back into Izuku's chest and disappearing from existence.

Ignoring her odd antics, Izuku stumbled through the hall until he found the door labeled 77. Plus, having your door be one of the second-farthest rooms from the elevator certainly didn't help. Nonetheless, he swiped his card and heard a beep from the door handle, so he swung the door open and saw his room was half a mess and half untouched.

Gazing around the dirty side of the room, he saw the bed was without bedsheets while a guy laid down reading a comic. Going unnoticed by the guy, Izuku viewed the open window on the guy's side of the room along with the large selection of books set above the desk that was placed in the corner.

Strolling over to the other side of the room, he set his suitcase next to the drawer that sat at the foot of the bed while he left his yellow bag on the chair of the desk. Checking his phone, he quickly replied to one of his mother's text messages before unpacking his belongings and sorting them into their place. While doing so, he dropped one of his old notebooks, only catching it after the spine had collided with the ground.

"Eep!"

Whipping around to see the source of the voice, Izuku saw the messy guy hiding his face with his comic. "It's alright," Izuku stuttered out, already berating himself about how he didn't sound comforting at all. "My name's Izuku Midoriya, I'm your roommate."

Lowering his comic, Izuku got a look at his roommate's face and he was thoroughly unimpressed. The boy held soft features all around with blue eyes shaped like water droplets, all framed by slightly wavy, chestnut brown hair.

Before he spoke, the boy slowly set his book down on his desk. "I'm Souta... Souta Yoshida." He muttered, though Izuku still picked up the brunette's name.

Emptying his yellow bag, Izuku moved over toward his drawer and moved his clothes from his suitcase to the wooden box. "So, why are you here at Nomura?" Izuku asked, amidst his unpacking.

"My parents want me to learn a lot," he muttered in response, shifting himself to sit on the edge of his sheetless bed. "You?"

"I couldn't get into the Hero schools, so I settled for the next best option." The freckled student replied, stuffing away an All Might-themed hoodie he had won in a game. "Actually, what's your Quirk?"

"Huh?" Souta muttered in surprise, this time. "Why do you want to know my Quirk?" He asked in return.

Halting the process of unpacking his clothes, Izuku went over to his desk and grabbed one of the notebooks he had just placed on it. Opening it up, he showed Souta a few drawings and notes about the powers of some of the newest heroes. "It's a hobby of mine. I like knowing more about Quirks."

"Oh," he squeaked, walking over to grab the notebook and peruse the notes. Each page was quite intricate, detailing every weakness, strength, and application of a Quirk with very few blanks. Even the drawings seemed like pictures of the actual heroes.

Giving the notebook back to Izuku, Souta strolled over to the open window and looked toward the sky. It was only when he whistled that Izuku could guess what his Quirk was.

Now on the windowsill was a mossy green bird, no bigger than someone's fist. "I can talk to birds," Souta finally answered, proceeded by Izuku flipping to a new page in his notebook and hurriedly writing down notes.

After a few moments, Izuku handed Souta the notebook and asked, "Can you make sure everything is correct?"

Silently agreeing, Souta told the bird to go back to its nest before looking at the notebook. Currently, there was a very rough sketch of him along with a bird drawn on the left page while the right page was filled with a list of details proceeding a short summary of his Quirk. Of course, there weren't very many notes, but Izuku wrote down that Souta could talk to birds and call them to him, though there was a question of whether they respected him or obeyed him.

Handing it back to the freckled boy, Souta nodded to him. "So it's accurate?" Izuku asked excitedly, barely stumbling over his words. Again, the brunette nodded to him. "Awesome! Your Quirk is really useful so I didn't want to mess it up."

"Really?" Souta asked, tilting his head while he stood next to the opened window.

"Of course!" Izuku quickly replied, only excitement shown through his outburst. "You could learn so much about birds! Maybe you can even teach them tricks or ask them to help you. Then, you would have helped nearly anywhere you went. It would be a great Scouting Quirk for any sidekick or even a hero. Especially when they're in short supply since everyone just wants to hire the ones with flashy and powerful Quirks. I'm rambling on, aren't I?"

"A little bit," Souta answered, holding his hand up to show a few centimeters of space between his thumb and pointer finger.

"Sorry, they are just so many cool Quirks out there," he apologized, "sometimes I wish I had a Quirk like yours."

"What's your Quirk then?" Souta asked, breaking off Izuku's train of thought before he started rambling about all the things he could do with Souta's Quirk.

Pointing to his horns, Izuku's eyes flickered, becoming black in the blink of an eye and returning to its white coloring just as fast. "I... I just have these horns."

"Those are still cool. I bet you can do a lot." The brunette said, trying to support Izuku.

"I can," he agreed, placing his notebook back on his desk and keeping his back to his roommate. "But when people can run faster than cars and make explosions from their hands... I just can't compare. They were born gifted, picked by nature to have those powers."

Izuku's gaze lowered and he clenched his hands around the edge of his desk, stressing out the wooden frame. When he started to grit his teeth, something began to poke out between his knuckles.

"Something wrong?" Souta asked, breaking Izuku out of his state before anything could come out between his knuckles.

"I think so," he spoke, though he sounded oddly tired. "Sorry, I don't know what came over me." He apologized again, turning to face the brunette who was still across the room.

Pointing toward another door, Souta said, "If you want to, you can wash your face in there."

Shaking his head, Izuku sat on the edge of his bed and looked out the window. The sun was well above the horizon, about three hours before sunset. "What time do I have to be back on campus?" He asked, not even moving his gaze away from the window on his side of the room.

"10 at night." The brunette answered meekly.

"I'm going out then." The freckled boy spoke, grabbing a change of clothes from his drawer. "My phone and stuff are on my desk, can you watch it for me?"

"Sure, but why?" Souta asked in return. "Shouldn't you take them?"

"Where I'm going, I don't need them."
