"Kaa-san! I'm home!" Izuku called out, walking into his family's apartment. "Kaa-san?" He called out again, not getting any response.
Slipping off his shoes, he stepped into the living room. There was nothing out of place except for a note that laid on the table. Scanning the room for any other peculiarities, he walked over to the table.
Grabbing the note, he read, "In case you didn't get my text, I left a note. I'll be spending the day with Mitsuki."
Setting the note down, he sighed and went to the bathroom. Stepping in front of the sink, he splashed his face with cold water before looking at himself in the mirror.
His horns hadn't changed at all, neither had the other features of his body. But he knew he wouldn't come to his goal very easily, even with Shiori's abilities. Zipping down the jacket of his tracksuit, he looked at the sweaty mess of his body.
"Shall we resume training another day?" Shiori asked, rippling into the reflection of the mirror.
"Yeah," Izuku muttered back. Taking off the rest of his clothes, Izuku dropped the articles into a basket while Shiori rippled away. Turning on the bath faucet, he waited a few seconds before slipping into the chilling water, relaxing his tense nerves.
For the next few minutes, he cooled down his body with a refreshing bath. A well-deserved reward after his latest training session.
After a few minutes, Izuku was finished with his bath and slipped into a thin set of clothing consisting of just a plain shirt and a pair of shorts. Returning to his room, the freckled boy grabbed his latest notebook, one all about his own abilities and plans for the future. Taking a pencil with him, he returned to the living room and turned on the television.
The first thing that had appeared was an old movie. Uninterested in it, Izuku let a random news station play while he looked over his notes.
In the notebook, he had his workout schedule on the first few pages and simply skipped over them. Then, he skimmed over what he knew about his power. But, he dutifully watched over the third section about the times he's used his power.
There weren't many instances where he had used the power of Shiori, though the few times he had, he always tried to record whatever either of them had remembered. The data had contributed to some minor predictions but also some research about subjects that Shiori decided to avoid or had no knowledge of.
With nothing new to add to the notes, Izuku closed the book and set it on the coffee table. Standing up, he waited for a few seconds for Shiori to come back in her ghostly form. "What should we do now?" He asked his benefactor after he had turned off the tv.
"Perhaps we can go for a walk. It would be a nice change from reading comics." She answered, her arms crossed below her chest.
"There's nothing wrong with comics," Izuku retorted, turning to the door. "I'm going to get the mail."
"Little One, the fantasy you read about is right in front of your eyes. You just have to look up."
Ignoring her comment, he walked out the door and descended the steps of the apartment complex. Fishing a set of keys out from his pocket, he unlocked his family's mailbox and pulled out three letters. Ascending back up the steps, he sifted through the small pile.
The first letter was a promotional letter from a random company he hadn't heard of, so he just set it aside. Behind that letter was an envelope from his father all the way from America. Saving that one for later, he looked at the last letter.
This one was sealed in a white envelope like the others but had been sealed with a stamp bearing the letters: U and A. Upon seeing it, he rushed up the flight of stairs and threw the other two letters on the coffee table while he ripped open the last letter.
Inside the envelope was just a folded piece of paper with the same letters at the top. Unfolding the paper, he took a deep breath before starting to read it.
"Dear Izuku Midoriya, we are sending this letter to inform that we cannot accept you into our school's Hero Course."
He dropped the letter, his hands frozen in place and his eyes fading into a red hue. Flying over to her vessel, Shiori looked at his eyes, already seeing the waterworks getting ready to work their magic.
"Continue reading, Little One." She ordered, yet Izuku didn't move a muscle. "There are other ways to be a hero. A single hindrance in your path will not stop you from reaching your destination. It will just take longer."
"But... UA was my dream school," he muttered, his hands grabbing onto the sides of his head. "I wanted to go there since I was a kid."
"Do not give up hope. Above all else, you had wanted to be a hero. A single school will not block that path, rather, it will make you look for another route."
Wiping away the current stream of tears flowing down his cheeks, Izuku picked the letter up from the ground.
"Due to your Quirkless state, admitting you into the Hero Course may cause too many problems for those involved. So, we welcome you to apply for the other courses, otherwise, you will be admitted to the next school of choice."
Slamming the letter on the coffee table, Izuku hid his face behind his hands. Flying behind him, Shiori wrapped her arms around him and used her wings the same way. "There are still other ways, Little One." She said, feeling something wet drip onto her arm.
"Let's go for that walk," he replied, wiping away the tears streaming down his face. Getting up from his seat, he went into his room and grabbed a few items: a jacket, his wallet, and his phone.
Then, with his demon at his side, he left the apartment and locked the door behind him. Slipping on his jacket, he descended the flight of stairs and began walking.
In just a few minutes, he had passed through the small suburban area he had lived in. Afterward, he stayed on the move, he strolled by stores and restaurants, though he had paid attention to none of them. It was only when he heard the sound of a police siren did he ever stop and pay any attention.
'Shiori?' He called on her, turning his head to look at the horned woman.
"Is this the route you have chosen to take?" She asked in return, her arms crossed beneath her chest.
'Do I have another choice?' He retorted, turning his head to watch the police cars. 'Plus, we will both be rewarded.'
"I suppose we will," she replied, looking in the same direction. "And this seems to be the most direct path to our goals. So, I will fully support you."
'Thank you,' he thought, starting to walk again. That walk turned into a jog and broke into a sprint.
Reaching the meeting place of the police, Izuku caught his breath and surveyed the situation. There was a blockade of cars with officers behind it, all of them holding firearms. Past the blockade was a bank, albeit a rather small one.
So far, there were two heroes outside of the bank working out negotiations, though Izuku suspected another hero had slipped into the building by now. The ones outside were Mt. Lady and Manual, both of which Izuku wondered why they were even at this scene. But at least Manual was making preparations while Mt. Lady worked out negotiations.
Walking up to the blockade, Izuku ignored everything behind him and focused solely on everything that was in front of him.
"Release the hostages!" The blonde heroine shouted in her normal size. "If you don't release them, we'll be forced to resort to force!"
Within the building, nothing had changed until a silhouette stepped near the windows. "I'd like to see you try, bitch!" It was a rather deep voice, though Izuku didn't make any assumptions yet.
Turning to the other hero, the heroine began to speak in at a much lower volume, inaudible at Izuku's distance. 'At least one villain with hostages against a hero who's basically useless and one who'd run out of firepower in a few minutes.' The freckled boy thought to himself, relaying the information he knew. 'Can you see anything?'
"I can see the soul of twenty scared people and two that are moving." She answered him.
'Two villains and twenty hostages...'
"Perhaps you can take advantage of taking the soul of a villain to reduce their numbers," she suggested, flying upward to look farther into the bank.
'I think I have a plan.' He told her, surprising the woman. 'I need you to give me the first stage of the boost and the second when I give you the signal.'
"Be warned, I will only allow you to be in the second stage of our demon form for five minutes total."
'Noted. But I'll need the first boost now.'
Closing his eyes for a moment, Izuku felt a slight sting that signaled him to open his eyes, revealing the whites have now changed to pitch black. Bursting into a sprint, he quickly approached an officer and slipped around him before pushing his arms in different directions. Using that distraction, he grabbed the handgun the officer was holding and sprinted toward the bank.
Rushing past the two heroes, he kept going to the building. "Leap forward!" He heard Shiori shout and followed her command without any hesitation. Leaping forward, he had dodged Mt. Lady's hand when she swiped at him during her enlargement.
"Hey! Get back here!" She shouted after him, but the call fell on deaf ears. "Manual!" She called to her temporary partner.
"I got him!" The water-themed hero shouted, motioning his hand toward Izuku. Following his motion, a stream of water burst from a fire hydrant and chased after Izuku.
Hearing the torrent, the freckled wonder sprinted even faster and burst through the doors of the bank with the attack still following him. Observing the attack, he tumbled to the side and let the attack crash into the glass above the teller's counter.
Taking a quick glance at the situation, two men wore masks while everyone else had left their face revealed, a clear giveaway to who the villains were. "Who the hell are you?" The villain closer to the main entrance had asked.
Not answering his question, Izuku glanced over the two villains and couldn't pick out anything to give him a better strategy. So, he simply charged forward and tackled the man who asked him a question. Holding down one of his arms, Izuku used his other arm to point the gun he stole against the man's neck.
"When the fuck do heroes carry guns?" He asked, yet no one had responded.
'Shiori, hurry!' He called out, not taking the time to look for the demon around him.
"There!" She shouted back, pumping power into Izuku's body.
Feeling the stinging in his eyes turn into a burning sensation, Izuku felt his eyes morph and changed how he viewed the world. Without a second thought, he took his gun-free hand and reached into the villain's chest, pulling out a green flame. Shoving the flame into his mouth, he watched the man's body drop to the ground and remain inanimate.
"What did you do to him?" Turning to face the group of hostages, Izuku saw the other villain at the center. "Answer me!"
He didn't answer. Rising from the ground, he pointed the gun at the remaining villain. "I took his soul. It was a bit bitter." He commented, licking his lips. "Maybe your terror will taste better than fear."
Before the villain could move, Izuku tackled him to the ground, almost hitting one of the hostages. This time, he felt the villain trying to kick him away, causing his soul to darken slightly from a very faded out green.
Reaching into his chest, he tore out the soul flickering in his body. It had come out easier than the other man's soul, though Izuku held the flame in his hand until the body had dropped dead. Popping it into his mouth, he got up and looked over the group of hostages that had gotten tied up with zip-ties.
"You're safe, just wait for someone to let you free," he spat out as he walked out of the bank. Outside he saw each officer pointing their gun at him and both heroes immediately attacked him.
Dodging away from both attacks, he ran between Mt. Lady's legs and jumped over a police car. Bursting into a sprint, he ran into the first alley he found and took as many turns as he could, not stopping until he heard Mt. Lady's footsteps and the sirens quiet down.
"Bitter and lackluster. They didn't even get a hit on me." The boy said to himself, closing his eyes.
After a few seconds, he felt his eyes morph and let the burning settle down into little more than slight irritation. "Fear and terror consumed their souls. I doubt that they would have been able to do more than run away."
"Huh?" Izuku muttered, opening his eyes
"I will inform you later, Little One." The woman said, her hands behind her back. "But I believe you should focus on heading home."
Pulling out his phone, Izuku glanced at the time. "You're right," he muttered again. "Kaa-san will get home any time now." Glancing at his surroundings, Izuku pulled up his hood and began to jog home without bringing any attention to himself.
