In this book, he is the crown prince of Edolas, son of Faust, and brother of Mystogan. However, he is secretly working for Mundus with a goal of killing his power-hungry father and create a Hell Gate to the Underworld so that he can rule Edolas as its new king. 

He also has hatred over Faust since he was abused and neglected by him. His reason of stealing magic power is not out of fear, but out of a drive to be strong, because he was the only human born with magic in his veins.
